I have a 2014 DRZ 400S. For what I use it for, I don't really need fuel injection or a 6th gear. I don't really need to run highway speeds on a dual sport motorcycle. I'm in the market for a midsize adventure motorcycle like a Honda Transalp 750 or Suzuki Vstrom 800 DE. I'd keep my DRZ 400S for the local roads and trails. That said, I think a new DRZ would sell very well if they keep it budget oriented. It would pull sales from the 300 cc dual sports. I hear tons of people with Honda CRF 300Ls wishing for more power.

I have a 2020 DRZ400 and a 2024 Kawasaki KLX300. THE KLX is nice but I like my DRZ much better. At 6’, 200 lbs the 300s are just too small for me. The frame is smaller, suspension is weaker and the main difference is power. The DRZ400 is so much more fun to ride because of the torque, acceleration and overall power it gets the blood flowing while the KLX300 feels like I’m riding a moped. I use the KLX for a beater bike but for everyday riding I jump on the DRZ or my KTM Adventure.

My 2 main issues for me with the bike are the seat height and 5-speed transmission. I want a lower seat height and six speed trans. I don't care about fuel injection, but I know it will be there. Cost would be a concern also. Not sure if I would give up my DR 650 for one, but an upgraded DRZ is very interesting. Why Suzuki did not continue with their 6-speed from their DR 350 is beyond me, it was perfect and wide ratio.

Yeah, weird that they tossed aside the six speed. Maybe it was about marketing purposes for other bikes. You know how the big companies are
@JacobAnawalt

A wider ratio 5 speed would suit me fine. I get that it doesn't have the torque of the 650, but it's not that far off. I think it could handle a lower RPM at 65 just fine, but already 1st gear is too tall. I want it down in TW200 1st land.

Yeah, I think they could certainly still have a really, really effective Rally style 450 hiding just beyond what's shown in the drawings. I'm also wondering if the drawing is shown with the wheels sucked up because that's the design position with rider weight on it, or if it actually will be lower...

I haven’t owned a DRZ400 for about 12 years now., but when I did have one I thought it was the best dual sport ever made. I still think it’s a great bike, even my old one, but any new improvements would certainly be welcomed. But at this stage in my list of preferences, if they were to offer a Rally version of the DRZ400, I think I’d probably sell/trade everything I currently own, as far as motorcycles go, for that machine...
@Sam-xt5gb
@Sam-xt5gb 2 дня назад
This is a great insight. If they made the new drz a rally bike (even just a trim level) it could do pretty well. People want bigger gas tanks. The kove 450 rally seems to have a lot of hype. If they made one for around the price they sell now, that beats out the competition for rally style bikes.

Suzuki has one of the most perfect bases to build an amazing lightweight ADV bike - even back 20 years ago. They could easily add a few little things and compete with the Chinese manufactures that are starting to take over. They have appeared to do an EFI and suspension up-grade, which is great. Will be interesting to see the rest of the up-grades.

I would welcome efi, 6 sp, better dash and larger tank. I think they will have to add weight for new emission rules, depending on country and possibly abs again depending on country. The emission regulations is always the killer with new bikes....
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions День назад
Agreed!
@Thanatos2996
@Thanatos2996 День назад
The emissions rules are applied across their entire fleet, so the same rules actually do apply even to the dinosaurs like the DRZ650, Suzuki just sells enough bikes with “good” emissions to offset the less efficient ones. They don’t have to make the bike worse for sake of emissions, they could have it score similarly to the old model while their street bikes keep the fleet average in check, but there’s a decent chance they will add weight and cut performance a la Honda CRF450L.
@Willberight2moro
@Willberight2moro 20 часов назад
@Thanatos2996 my understanding is that any new model has to meet current emission regulations ie euro 5. That generally means heavier catalytic converter filters in exhaust and complex fuel mapping. This adds weight, cost and lowers performance. This is why old carry models like the DRZ haven't changed. Developing countries don't have these restrictions, hence manufacturers catering more for them...
@Thanatos2996
@Thanatos2996 20 часов назад
@@Willberight2moro that may be the case in Europe, but in the US any new motor vehicle is subject to the same set of regulations regardless of when it was originally designed. The reason the old DRZ and XR are still legal for sale is that the emissions regulations apply to the fleet, not to the individual models.

I think its fun to think about and speculate on, but if this is a patent drawing, the point is to highlight the use of new patenable items, likely in relation to the EFI system, and not to be very accurate in form. If I were to believe this drawing, they went TW200 with drum brakes and fat tires, but I doubt that is the case. The exhaust routing looks the same to me, but the second segment of the exhaust is fatter. Again, I'm not going to put any weight into that, or any other design element. What this does tell me is that the chances are high they are finally letting go of grandfather emissions status and refreshing with EFI+emissions and while EFI is usually easier to start and certianly doesn't flood when you take a spill, emissions add weight and complexity as we saw on the KLR650. I don't know that I would jump to the new thing unless they also redid some other glitches, like further refinements to the good suspension, figuring out a way to lower the seat with the same clearance, and I'd be most interested in a reworked transmission with a wider spread between 1st and 5th. I'd take that far over a 6 speed with the same ratio between 1st and 6th as we have now between 1st and 6th. The DR-Z400 has enough oomph to not need more gears, it just could use a lower low and a higher high. If I had my way all dual-sports would have a TW200 1st gear, with 2nd being like a DR-Z400 1st gear and 5th being like a DR650's 5th, or wherever the RPM needs to be to be at full torque and HP at 65 MPH. While I would appreciate some more HP and torque, I don't want to see it gained by sacrificing regular octane gas for higher compression.
@JacobAnawalt
@JacobAnawalt 2 дня назад
Maybe the thick segment right after the header is a catalytic converter? Ugh.
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions День назад
Yeah, I'm really interested to see how this drawing compares to the final product. As you said, they may just have slapped the majority of it together with little to no accuracy on the unimportant bits. It's also vague enough that we could be getting a 450 rally with a wider range gear box like I'm hoping for!

I have a DRZ400e. I don’t think it needs a 6th gear, it just needs a way wider ratio 5 speed like the ACT gear set. Fuel injection would be very much welcome, but EFI and inverted forks alone would not be enough to make me interested. If they are not putting a much wider ratio gear set in it, it’s a non starter for me.

It can get tiresome swinging your leg over, especially if you have a bag on the rear rack, but as long as you're 5'10+ and step up before swinging over, you should be able to get most of both feet down on level ground and a foot down on most trails. Have you seen that 5' lady ride those big adventure bikes? It's doable (but not comfortable.) I wouldn't mind having the seat height in DR650 land and would give up an inch of clearance for it, but I don't know if I want to try lowering the suspension to do it.

@JacobAnawalt
@JacobAnawalt 2 дня назад
Why 6? DR650 has the torque to tractor through a lot and it crusises at a reasonable RPM stock. Are you really feeling that 2nd is too low and 3rd is too tall and a 2.5 would be just right? A lot of 6 speed transmissions just give more "perfect RPM at this speed" selection, not an overdrive to 5th gear.
@wudntulike2no32
@wudntulike2no32 2 дня назад
@@JacobAnawalt With stock gearing it cruises at 65-70 fine but we have 80mph speed limits here and some of the trails I have gone to are over 100 miles away. One of the trails I went on was a steep uphill with loose rocks and first gear was too long. The bike started struggling when I got over 8000ft elevation. I fixed it with a 45 tooth rear sprocket and that trail was much easier but now highway is worse. A 6th gear would fix that. A shorter 1st and 2nd and longer 4th and 5th would help as well but it won't be as good as a 6 speed.

The dr650 is a caveman bike the reason why its so great is as long as you have a stick and a rock you can fix anything on that bike. And its fairing qell against the test of time. Is it a big pig? Yeah but once you get past that and get a handle on the bike it will take you everywhere. I have the same sentiment for the drz400 although fi wouldnt be too bad but when you start to slap too much tech on a dualsport i believe it starts to ruin the charm of the bike hopefully is they do make changes to the drz it will keep its reliability. Well to be fair, you'd better pair up against a heavily modified DR-Z400, with about the same $$$ invested in aftermarket mods. Get the pumper carb or electron with proper jetting, 3x3 mod, tune the suspension. Same jazz you did to the 300L and see if EFI tune can make up the 100cc difference. It seems like you'd need to change the points away from drag-racing, jumping and bumping to some other metrics to find a "win".
