Today we're rebuilding a Trick Suzuki DRZ400 Super Motard.
The engine suffered from catastrophic oil consumption and needed a new top end and bottom end.
And while we were in there we added some bling.

After seeing the New South plate I looked your shop up and we are neighbours. Now I know where to take my DR if something like that happened. Nice video!

nice job guys, i learned a few things, i thought you would use a solvent soak and ultrasonic cleaner on the valves but your way works good. i also never used a wrench on a philips head like that, thats a mental note to keep. i also gotta say, the farkles are kinda cool, im guessing you dont wanna do the see-thru stuff on a e/s model if you plan on taking it off-road. thanks for the video and explanation

Loved the video! Can you drop a link to the new cylinder head? My head looks just like yours did on the exhaust side as well.

Try to grab a 439cc 440cc big bore kit from Athena to upgrade if possible

How much would it cost to have something like this done on a similar model bike like a (2003 Kawasaki KLX400SR) that would share the same parts as a (2003 DRZ400)?

So what about all the oil you got on the head gasket from when you oiled the rings?

Do you find that these engines make a lot of noise? Idling is one thing but while under load? I got a top end harmonic vibration /buzzing that may be normal? This is my first 4 stroke dirt bike and I have no idea how it's supposed to sound. I'm used to two strokes. With the stock exhaust you can really hear all the moving parts and some people online say it's "normal". It runs great but maybe the valves need adjusting? It only has 6,000 miles on it. Stock cam chain adjuster seems good, no excessive ticking. Thoughts?

yea DRZ vibrates a lot. its single cylinder 4 stroke. its normal. 6k miles is nothing, there should be nothing wrong with it if it was maintained well. i check my valves every now and then, only needed to adjust valves once at 8k. now im at 26k and no valve issues

@diegoaespitia Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. I'm thinking all the noises are normal and should be able to just ignore it and ride. Or put a sweet Yoshimura exhaust on and drown it out!

The plastic wiring harness protector, underneath the seat, has a tendency to vibrate sympathetically with the air box. It’s only held onto the frame by a single bolt. Some TESA tape stuck to bottom side of it and checking tightness of the screw helps quiet it down a fair bit. Also, the S & SM motors have a spring damper in the counter balancer drive gear (@ 9:00) that makes a little more noise when the motor is under low speed load in comparison to the E & Kick-Start only engines.

Mine burns about 1/2 qt every 1000miles since new but I just switched to full synthetic seems to help a bit

I have a couple of these no chance, pulling the top end apart without yanking the engine out of the bike
@anonymous-tn6ij
@anonymous-tn6ij 28 дней назад
I would think you could just buy a new top end and a ring kit and some gaskets pull the top off. Throw some cams in there clean the cylinder through the rings on the piston or maybe pull the wrist pin. Get a different jug do a big bore.

As soon as I saw the white stuff coming out, I was thinking oh yeah, backyard mechanic just as I suspected
@anonymous-tn6ij

I also noticed the circular pattern of tightening down the case halves instead of a star pattern like how you would do lug nuts, but you know, backyard, mechanic, and all

Yep, it’s always nice to soak that head gasket with with a bunch of oil that you dumped on the rings. I’m sure that head gasket won’t slide out ever lol
