Colin analyses the new Friends Downtown Flower and Design Shops as an 18+ modular building. Could it be modified to fit with those iconic Lego sets like the Boutique Hotel, Parisian Restaurant, or Jazz Club? #lego #legofriends #analysis
Friends is a gravely underrated series. Aside from Speed Champions, Friends does more with building techniques than any other theme. I love their stuff, and admittedly the scale is a bit off compared to mini figure-sized buildings, but their stuff is still excellent. The roller arcade and the art school are two of my personal favourites. Excellent parts usage and fun bright colours.
I always found that friends buildings bridged the line between a lego city "facade" structure with a fully open back side, but with the outer and inner detail of a modular set. Also, I find the purple building in the friends set looks best beside the grocery store
Interesting! The Green Grocer just seems to look good next to anything. I think the exterior detail is there for this set. Other Friends set, not so much. They're very reminiscent of the old 1980s Town sets.
It's possible is your piece collection is large enough and/or you swap out a lot of the colors. I have a decently large collection, but I don't have many Friends sets (or anything using those colors), so a second one makes sense. Each building is about half the depth of a normal modular.
I agree that the main factor to overcome is color. The color palette to be specific. The LEGO Friends theme has its own personality and is vibrant, these are playsets and the colors are intended to catch the attention. The same happens with the silohuette of the furniture store, it is intended to stand out. Also the scale of Friends is more of a playset than the one in modulars that is not so reduced. The furniture store should be at least three levels high plus the height of the slope with that design. I buy some Friends sets for pieces but in my mocs I like a more "feal life" and "weathered" look, which is a self inflicted pain because those colors are not common through the whole LEGO sets. i e. Dark tan, dark orange, olive green, dark Brown, sand colors, etc. But yes, they can be modularized and find a place into a LEGO city.
People need to buy the heck out of this set so Lego makes more amazing, detailed, great value for money builds like this. Can't wait to see it modularised
I always thought Animal Crossings and Lego would be a great fit and this sort of has that vibe with buying furniture. It would be great if the City line had something similar. The size of this set is actually pretty impressive!
My plan in April is to get the main street building before it retires, and then this later so my sister has her own modular street kind of since she still likes to play with the interiors of buildings so no modifications to the sets for me if we end up with them.
Yeah! I'm finding that the Book Shop seems to mesh well with a lot of modular buildings. While I don't love that set (compared to other modulars), this increases its esteem in my eyes.
Not sure if you realized this, but that wall on the Sanctum Sanctorum where the cthulian monster is coming out of the portal is actually reversible. You can flip it around and make the monster come out into the interior of the build instead.
Being a Friend’s fan I think this is an amazing set that one day I hope to get. I know it will take a second set, if not more, to modularize it. I look forward to seeing what you are able to create if you take on this project!
I like the basic design of the Friends modular but the colors are all wrong. It's not the main color of each building that is the problem (although they are a little loud), it's the poor color coordination with the trim colors on each building. Why does the yellow building include dark blue in the first floor awning? Why does the yellow building have turquoise shutters on the second floor? Why is there a sky blue section on the purple building? To me, these color combinations are inconsistent and they don't work well together. As they are now, these buildings could make sense as part of a more run down part of the Lego city (lower property values, where some people made terrible paint color choices). If you do make a larger modular out of this set, I recommend trying to swap out some of the trim colors to be better coordinated.
Fair enough. I doubt we would have the set if not for having two daughters who are into the line. But, since they're part of the channel, I had to let them give some input for our January purchases.
@@buildingtogether4171 I assume your question was rhetorical. You're the master. I feel like the original build has plenty of colors already, but they're not the most life-like. You could go either way tbh.
