Yep, they have put Lego castle out of reach for the average kid. As a big fan of knights and castles , I highly enjoyed lego castle as a kid in the early 2000’s. My family didn’t have a lot, so the most I got was a 20 dollar set on Christmas and my birthdays. Now I spend thousands of dollars on lego and to think that probably never would have transferred into adulthood if not for the cheap castle sets of my childhood. Their losing future customers, no doubt

Support comment supports. Lego knows a castle theme would dominate other themes financially and that scares them because castle is a difficult theme to infuse modern wokeness and garbage into. Really sad how companies are forced into terrible decisions because of politics.

As much as I love Lego, I think the price for collecting has become an issue with most themes. I’m debating selling all of my sets and just collecting speed champions. Collecting Marvel and certain icons, ideas, Star Wars sets has become an expensive hobby.. I also have the Indiana jones and Jurassic park anniversary sets.. there should be a rehab to get off the Lego. It’s too fun and addictive 😅

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it’s the golden age for some fans. I’m fortunate enough to be able to buy the sets and since I wasn’t around in the 80’s it’s definitely a fun time to be getting everything we’re getting. Brickclicker said he’ll have 2025 leaks soon so it’ll be fun to see if we’re getting anything Castle in ‘25 and if we are it’s safe to assume we’ll get at least one set a year from Lego and maybe an occasional gwp. Only time will tell but I’m pretty excited for future sets

I was too young to have any classic castle sets, and my childhood castle theme was the two Knights Kingdoms themes of the early 2000s. I do not understand how anybody could argue that the castle sets today are anything but better than any castle theme in the past. Granted, you are paying a premium as such.

90's will always, always be the golden age. We got new factions every year, tons of sets, and it wasn't only very large/ expensive ones. but the current era is pretty fantastic, especially (like you said) if you're the target audience. I wish it was more widely available, but the Bricklink Castle in the Forest is also up there as a phenomenal castle set. Big fan of the remade galaxy explorer and el dorado fortress as well, I just think they're knocking the 'remakes' out of the park.

I take offence at the term "Golden Era". That implies that having more castles is a good thing, I think we can all agree having more than one castle looks terrible. A city with ONE castle on the hill looks okay, but any more just look awful and stupid. So I would say we are in the "Runny Brown Era", the "Diarrhoea Era" of castles, they have taken over BDP to the point they may as well call it BCDP, Bricklink Castle Designer Programme. Series 3 and 4 have FIVE CASTLES out of ten sets, its half castle when it should be ALL TRAINS.

Well, my personal opinion is they shouldn't make any more big castle sets for a while in the Bricklink program. At least not until they make new factions or new remakes. We have a forestmen set, a lion knights port, a falcon fortress and a falcon siege camp. Now they need a small to medium wolfpack set, and then they need to wait until they get a new faction (with proper pieces to equip the castle with). And they should think about modularity. I have a dream that they are smart enough to realize this sooner rather than later, and when they do a black knights castle remake, they would just make an icons style castle on a built up raised baseplate and leave openings for the set to connect to walls - walls that can be parts of a lego creator set to extend the fortifications around the black knights castle , hopefully made with similar style so they mesh well together.

@octav1600
@octav1600 4 дня назад
I've been on a HUGE rant about stickers ever since they released the Medieval Town Square. 1. I don't mind them when it's in small sets that focus on things that are easter eggs or one offs (like the new LEGO truck TV with a tiger from the explorer's set - lovely sticker, and I don't mind it being a sticker). Usually I buy these sets for a minifig or completion of a series - and if it's meant for kids, they are unlikely to care that much. 2. LEGO sets are expensive as is already ... if I pay around 100 Euro on a set, I fully expect to have at least the main features of the series / set to be prints. Great example here again is the LEGO truck - the HUGE panels are prints (and I am well aware they are part of the cost) same as some other fancy things like the lego boxes. A good example of what not to do is Set 60432 Command Rover and Crane Loader - the prints it has are GREAT. some stickers are ok, don't mind them BUT they have the 3x1 tile with hazard stripes as stickers. We already have that print on yellow and blue ... can't be to hard to apply the same print on a 3x1 tile ... 3. Really REALLY big sets (18+, Ideas, Icons etc) - again, these sets are as expensive as SIN ... While I do agree they can't print everything (they would just cut down on some or most of these if they had to print it or the prices would be even more ridiculous) I really hate it when they do what they did with the Medieval Town Square. There is no new print except the torsos and that one shield (if that was a sticker as well - that would mean me not even considering to buy the set at all) They eve cheap-ed out on leg printing. They couldn't even be bothered to add in a wolfpack shield or legs for the poor man. And most annoying they didn't even have the forethought regarding the shop signs and letters. The shop signs could have been used for years to come in friends, city, a medieval line if they ever do one, DnD sets, Dreams, Ninjago, maybe not monkie kid as they are clearly european designs, Harry Potter and LOTR, other icons and ideas sets, and most of all in those again, expensive as sin Bricklink special sets. They could have sold them on Pick a Brick ... and people would have most likely bought them by the dozen (I know I would have wanted to have an extra 10 of each). And the letters ... don't even get me started on those ... letters with a dragon, a lion and a falcon instead of boring old round nondescript wax seal? Again, these would have been infinitely usable across ALL above mentioned series and smuggled in set every time they wanted to make a fancy story telling moment (oh! the wolfpack renegades have a dragon seal envelope? does that mean they take orders from the Dragon knights ? or the Black knights ? ). The fact these shop signs and letters were stickers was the most disappointing moment I had with LEGO since they decided to stop castle and space back in 2000s ish. This disappointment is even greater since they did such great sets that had full prints and they seemed to not have needed to hike up the prices for them. the viking village - those 5 or so prints were GREAT, not sure how popular vikings are, but I think a medieval town square should have been equally if not more popular to warrant prints for the main features of the village. The Galaxy Explorer - had PERFECT amount of prints, no stickers, decent price and everybody loved it - the fact they couldn't be bothered to make the blacktron GWP with prints shows they don't even care about what people want - the stickers in the Blacktron GWP were perfectly complementary to the Galaxy explorer - now they are stickers and worthless. There is a reason I own 4 Galaxy explorers and only 1 of the "FREE" GWP sets. And it's not the price. Eldorado fortress resolved most of the old prints with "pieces'" in the wall to show the falling off white wash from the red bricks and the main features were printed - the flags and the sail. Having prints makes the product feel special, if they don't have prints. it's just a collection of bricks. People who buy expensive lego sets most likely already have a decent collection of bricks, and we want exclusive things that will enhance our setup. 4. Solutions: - they should, when possible, build the thing instead of doing it with prints or stickers. The yellow toy Castle in the Lion Knights Castle or the exhibits in the muzeum modular are perfect examples. - if something can't be built, if it is a main feature, no matter the complexity or ease of application, make it a print (they did so many relevant features as stickers in so many sets, it's just SAD - the stickers will not stand the test of time - there is a reason they almost always print the eyes of the ninjago dragons, even if they are on simple slopes or tiles) - if something is an easter egg, think twice if you can make it generally usable (I would count the lion, falcon and dragon letters from the medieval town square here - they are easter eggs, but infinitely re-usable easter eggs. Give me one kid who wouldn't be happy to have these in their harry potter / city / friends set instead of a plain letter). - if something cannot be made re-usable, like that Tiger on TV, the Wanted poster and huge wall paper in the Village, or the myriad stickers in LOTR ... stop and think who it is made for, and in what set, then decide if the fact that you are charging an arm and a leg for the set doesn't at least warrant the extra effort for a "premium product". I see people selling custom printed tiles for $5 - and they are not LEGO, they don't have everything automated and streamlined. and they don't sell one million pieces. If a custom printed tile costs $5, then a set that costs more than a salary in some places (yes, I am talking about those HUGE $500 sets) should at least have this. As many prints as needed to make it look good, or if there are too many prints - I agree Barad'Dur has a lot of them, maybe just cut a few of them, but make sure the really necesary ones are there and are really REALLY well made. - if you really REALLY need avoid having prints for some odd reason (from cost to efficiency), for the really big rounded panels at least, make a huge plastick sheet (not a paper sticker - so it actually lasts as long as the set, similar to the Harry potter banner 3D backs) and place it inside the curve of the lego panel for it to be removable instead of using paper sitckers on bricks. - for everything else, that is not consequential and is just a fun nod to something in a small set, sure ... make it a sticker if you really can't afford it. However, this bit with not affording it I feel is a lie they are telling themselves first of all. I am sure profits won't suffer if they actually make a quality product instead of a half measured one.

I hate this recent trend in Harry Potter sets where instead of brick-building shelves, they just place a huge sticker of the shelf. You can see that in the new Ollivanders & Madam Malkin's shops, Potions Class, Hagrid's Hut. They do the same thing in Barad Dur.

Stickers across multiple pieces was happening even until the 2010s. Also I feel like the Gringotts sticker was an issue with the graphic design. I use a small misting bottle of ammonia free eyeglass cleaner spray. Clean the element with it using a scratch free eyeglass cloth. Then mist the element and use an exacto knife to apply and align the sticker. Concave elements like the Icons Space Shuttle (Barad Dur) and trans clear elements with trans stickers (UCS Tumbler) are challenging as well as alignment of stickers across multiple parts like the Supra headlights. Gringotts was just trash I had to cut the sticker and apply across parts.

I honestly think there lego can print everything if they want. Mega has been printing everything for years and do a very good job with it. Lego can do it I believe they just don't want to. @@JackTheGrincher Some of the best regarded are Cobi, Pantasy, Cada, and BlueBrixx. Cobi's quality control is actually better than Lego's, their bricks are top-notch, and they use all prints. Plus, they have pieces Lego doesn't, so you get interesting new building techniques. There are a ton of others competitors. Try to find ones that source GoBricks, one of the big manufacturers of alternative bricks. Their elements are just as good as Lego, and a casual fan wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. Pantasy, for example, uses GoBricks. There are a handful of small English-language RU-vid channels, like Brick Me Up Scottie, that cover Lego competitors. There's also the German channel Merlins Steine, which is superb, and he releases some of his videos in English on his Merlin's Bricks channel. Most of the best coverage is actually from Europe, where these other brands are discussed equally with Lego, whereas English-language coverage is almost totally (and unjustly) dominated by Lego. Part of that is because Lego sponsors most of the biggest English-language RU-vid brick-building channels.

unpopular opinion: Orthanc is the best looking set for display. I think that the tower being a smaller tower and more simplistic in the movies is an advantage compared to Barad Dur. Barad Dur is cool but the tower itself is a bit too short compared to the base and some other details like the spires just look a bit off due to the sizing. And the entrance being sized to a minifig also makes it look a bit off because when you put minifigs in there they are too big compared to the tower. And again, Orthanc being smaller IRL is a benefit as it doesn't look as odd to have saruman on the balcony as it does having an orc in the entrance of barad dur. and being more simplistic there are less things that proportionally look weird. and for rivendell i can't really say anything except the fact that it's more of a doll house than a display piece. Again, it looks good but imagine having that on display in a living room. it would just look like a lego set while the tower of orthanc i think makes a great display piece on a shelf next to a flower or something.
