I have an MG4 Trophy, my first EV, and I love it. The best thing is the way it drives, take it on a country road and with 204hp through the back wheels and a well sorted chassis, suspension and steering, it is just lots of fun. The fact that it costs peanuts to run helps too, off-peak a 0-100% charge would be less than £6 but at the moment it costs me nothing with excess solar power - I never got free fuel with my diesel Top tip - you can program the right hand star button on the steering wheel to control the fan and temperature, so no need to go into the infotainment

Thank you for that but if information about the a/c. Thought it would be there but we only get the keys for 25 minutes (including camera setup) so I did not get to really understand the car but hopefully MG UK can loan me a press car to really see what it is like to live with. It does surprise me the cost and even the top of the range is cheaper than it’s rivals bottom of the range.

Really like the MG4. When I chop in the Mokka-e, the MG4 is very likely to be the replacement. But the bigger battery one coming later. 312 miles I believe. I have 200 really 180 with the Mokka-e and thats great but more is better.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
The 64kwh battery is claimed 281 so guessing 250-260 but have not tested it. I have seen a few articles on a more powerful 400bhp model. Would like to drive it although from what I have found a lot of people performance is really low down the list where as range is the most important
@howardbowen-RC-Pilot
@howardbowen-RC-Pilot Год назад
@Damo drives I like performance much as the next guy. I drive the Mokka-e in eco nearly all the time . That's just 80bhp and you'd think that'd be insufficient. But with EV it just isn't. All the torque instantly. 136bhp sport mode is just superb. It's just different driving an EV. Yes I'd agree range is probably more important. But eco mode keeps up with motorway traffic with no problems.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
Not being an EV owner I often wonder how hard people actual drive there EVs(you have just stated Eco mode in your case), sort of implies powerful EVs are generally not required and make good marketing / pub talk

In a similar position myself - have a Peugeot e208 on salary sacrifice. Lovely small car and could do with a bit more range (real world max 180). The MG4 SE would be a great replacement with about 250 real world. Would I go for a bigger battery model than the 64kwh? - only if the step in price wasn’t that big but I suspect it will be a lot more than the 64.

Not sure how this is a brand new model, when they have already released an updated version in China which is about to be sold in Australia and NZ. Some of the updates are a rear wiper, rear centre headrest, one pedal driving mode. Also a new 77kwh battery with yes I know you do not care about performance, but it will get 100nm more torque that will improve how it handles higher loads. And hopefully most if not all of the minor problems have be fixed.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
It was a uk press event so the MG team had what I would assume the latest cars to them so if there are newer versions I apologise but don’t have access to them. I am sure most of the information still remains valid

@DamoDrives Nothing to opolgise for, but the MG4 has been on sale since June 2022, so a year old and usually facelifted at that time. They are not due here until September, along with the updated BYD Dolphin, which now has a much larger 60kwh battery and power train that is shared by the Atto 3

I bought a Trophy and the one thing I didn't notice on the test drive was the dangerous lane Assist. It might be called 'Assist' but it's downright dangerous and it needs sorting by MG and not ignored. I'm amazed it's even allowed on the car and even though you can switch it off it defaults to 'ON".
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
I think if I had the car for a longer amount of time I would have tested some of these features. Was given the keys for 30 minutes (including camera setup) so could not do everything. Do you like the car other than that
@rogerwilson6367
@rogerwilson6367 Год назад
@@DamoDrives Yes, it's a great car, totally let down by this one thing. I've been driving for over 50 years, 20 of which were as a police officer and words fail me when describing this so called 'assist'.

@@rogerwilson6367 this is the one thing that puts me off. For well over a year customers have been begging MG to sort this, but MG's corporate thinking seems to be "if we ignore them, maybe they will go away." seems a strange way to do business.

My priority is handling, build quality and range. Remember after 150 miles you should have a break so mega range is not critical as heavy batteries reduce efficiency.
@mikebreen2890
@mikebreen2890 Год назад
I totally agree. Carting around thousands of pounds worth of heavy batteries when you do 4 longer trips a year doesn't make logical sense. What we need are chargers, not more range.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
Until last month I had no rapid chargers around me and no charger at home or even a drive so running an EV would have been virtually impossible. I am very keen since a local 150kwh charger has been installed to run a MG for a week and see how I get along. I have a modified Mini for an occasionally Sunday morning drive so the MG would be the sensible car.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
The only reason for larger batteries is so you don’t have to recharge as often (this would be the case for me having to rely on public chargers but would not matter as much if you charged at home)

don't think the motor changes direction, as that would bust the gears. The fields may reverse to change the motor from a drive motor to a generator, with the motor load acting as a brake.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
I need to find out more about this . Having a look it seems the wheels are used to turn the electric motor thus generating an electric field and ultimately electricity rather than the battery used to create an electric field and turning the wheels so you are correct 👍

i don't care about performance... to a point. but when some electric cars get sub 10 second times with just a driver you then have one of the slowest cars on the road when you have a full family on board. becomes even more of an issue when trying to go up steep hill etc as 0-60 times are an indicator of how much power the car has overall. I certainly don't need a 3 second car, but I need enough power to overtake etc.

MG4 Trophy £32.5K, cheapest Model 3 £43k. Nowhere near each other and you can get 0% finance on the MG at the moment, Not really competing with each other as the MG4 is the best budget option out there IMHO, the Model 3 is quite a step above it.
@DamoDrives
@DamoDrives Год назад
It could certainly take sales away from Tesla as the price difference is significant but I do not think the Model 3 is actually in the same segment. I cannot make a fair comparison between them though as I have not driven a Tesla 😬

It’s scary in someways the base MG4 is £15,000 cheaper than the base Model 3 but I don’t really want to comment as I have not driven a Tesla so it might be the increase in price is fair
