One thing that I think really has helped the N64 and GC receive a cult like following is the fact that these two systems are arguably some of the best systems to play with friends and family. Having 4 controller ports right out of the box, and plenty of fun 4 player games was awesome. I still to this day enjoy playing Smash, Mario Party, and Mario Kart with my cousins on these systems.

Thankfully Nintendo still sees value in local multiplayer while others say no to local multiplayer.
@Halfdanr_H
@Halfdanr_H 5 лет назад
Absolutely! Multiplayer and gaming in general is such a insular activity nowadays. Multi taps were like gold when I was a kid. Weekends after school were so good because when someone got a multi tap from their parents, we'd descend on that house, we'd bring enough pop and sweets to make a diabetic sweat, order pizza, and stay up all night playing games. Online play can never compete with that.
@ncshuriken
@ncshuriken 4 года назад
Not to mention both the N64 & GC were serious powerhouse consoles (they seemed far more powerful for their time than the Wii's or Switch for their time). And yea the multiplayer thing is a real shame, especially what multiplayer has become today (almost completely online only, everyone playing together by being alone in seperate houses). Back then multiplayer was still about coming together as a family or getting mates round to fight or race.

Actually there are quite a few good Wii games out there, they are just hidden under tons and tons of horrible shovelware. E.g. Geometry Wars Galaxies is brilliant (I bought the Wii and a Nintendo DS just for this game - the only Nintendo devices I own). House of the Dead - Overkill is great (albeit inferior to the PS3 version of course), GunBlade NY/LA MachineGuns is a system exclusive double pack of two tunnel shooters ported from the arcade, which can be had for 2 bucks now, Big Brain Academy and Mensa Academy are quite good if you are into this type of stuff, Mad World is an game with absolutely unique kind of Sin City-like black/white/red graphic style and excessive over the top violence ... i love it. Red Steel is quite entertaining, and so is No More Heroes, Epic Mickey is not bad and I personally like the Trauma Center series. There are more. Of course the amount of good games is still small compared to what you have on any Playstation or XBox system (no matter what generation), and overall the Wii is of couse a terrible system, but under the big pile of ugly shit targeted at kids, there are some very good system exclusives hidden. You just need to dig a little bit.

Fair play to you my friend, such an in depth documentary, I enjoy all your documentary videos on gaming consoles and if they're worth playing still, but this one has to be my favourite. I find it saddening that great content like this doesn't get the exposure it rightfully deserves, this is extremely interesting and truly unique content and is something you won't find anywhere else these days and yet there's half arsed videos put out on popular gaming topics which has been uploaded countless times before and it'll blow up, I find it very disappointing to say the least. I really enjoy your videos, the documentaries in particular are almost like works of art and as someone who loves older game systems, this is among the best sit back and watch entertainment out there (including sports, movies ect, not just RU-vid). Criminally underrated and underappreciated content and congrats for staying true to yourself and not going for the easy option of gaining more money and subscribers, success isn't always determined by numbers, but by integrity. Keep up the fascinating content, Rich!

The comment about milenials, this is their nostalgia beginning to kick in about their childhood gaming on the game cube and hold it dear as we do the snes/megadrive or mastersystem etc. So even if the gamecube is not the greatest nintendo system ever it is extra special to them.

I'm 33, bought a GameCube at launch (that I still own) I've always loved my GameCube, awesome multiplayer console, buttery smooth graphics, awesome controller, cool being able to attach a GBA for some games. Spent countless night drinking and playing Mario kart and Wario Ware with friends. I still buy game for it to this day.

Everyone feels nostalgic for the console they had as a kid. Even though I don't feel any real attachment to the Game Cube, I still have to admit that it had a lot of cool looking games that weren't remade. As much as I liked the Wii U, I think it has a rather sad fate of obscurity considering it's library is being completely strip mined for the Switch.

12:06 CRAZY THING, The Dreamcast had 8MB of video memory when it was released in 1998 and in 2000 when the PS2 came out it had 4MB of video memory. one of the reason PS2 games always have this weird grainy look or do not look as sharp as Dreamcast games.

Gamecube is one of my favourite consoles ever. Great exclusives, one of the best controllers and gadgets you can hook up with it (GB Player, GBA->GC Cable). I bought mine in 2007, when gamecube was just discontinued on stores, i bought second hand RE4 bundle with TLOZ: Twilight Princess and got MGS: The Twin Snakes from my cousin for loan. These are one of my favourite Gamecube games, especially MGS: The Twin Snakes. I have gathered almost all best exclusives for this console by now and i play my gamecube very often. For Resident Evil fan boy as myself, this is the best consoles for these games because all the best games in the series where released on this platform( 0, 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica and 4). Gamecube has really special place in my heart :)

When the gamecube launched I was still loving my N64 and the great games it had to offer and only picked one up in 2004 when I saw them on offer in asda, the console was £50, extra controllers were £15 and the Rgb scart was £10. So that was £75 spent total. (I think I also picked up a memory card for a fiver too). At the time it felt that most people were not into it and it was pretty much dead, but coming from n64 (which I only bought in late 98) it was awesome. I loved luigi's mansion which was a nice break from the norm and loved mario sunshine too as it felt like a natural progression and I enjoyed the story and setting. Double dash grew on me after not liking double carts at first, and then there was resi 4 and metroid prime. The starfox games were a bit of a let down. Super smash bros was awesome as we're a lot of the other nintendo games of which I cold go on and on (zelda, f zero etc etc. I remember picking up a gameboy player from gamestation pre-owned but boxed as new condition for £15! Great times and great system.

Maybe this is mental acrobatics but to me the Gamecube actually sold 134 million total because technically the Wii was an upgraded Gamecube with motion controls, making it the second best selling console of all time behind the PS2.
@jeremebp

With that math, you can add all ps2s and ps3s to ps1s sales figures and ps1 is easily the best selling system.

The Gamecube's library is insanely good: Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Zelda Wind Waker, Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Baseball, Mario Soccer, Tales of Symphonia, Animal Crossing, Baten Kaitos, Viewtiful Joe, Soul Caliber 2, Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race Blue Storm, Phantasy Star Online 1&2, Crazy Taxi, Star Wars Rogue Leader, Prince of Persia Sand of Time, Battalion Wars... and those are just off of the top of my head. It may not be as exceptional as the NES, SNES, PS1, or PS2, but imo it's right below those systems along with the Genesis/Megadrive, PS3, and XBOX360, and above such systems as the N64, Xbox, Wii, Wii U, Saturn, Dreamcast, and Master System.

I think the main thing that defines a great console is it's games. Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros: Melee, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid; The Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 4. Even though Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Sonic Mega Collection, The Legend of Zelda Collection not to mention the Gameboy player. So yeah i think its one of the best consoles of all time. It just sucks that it didn't sell as well as it should of.
@WaterKirby1994
@WaterKirby1994 5 лет назад
Agreed, Gamecube should have outsold Xbox, yet didn't for some reason. I blame Microsoft's "Nintendo is for little kids campaign" which clearly was never true. Legend of Zelda & Metroid series for example, as well as the fact that Gamecube had plenty of Teen & Mature games. PS2 only won the Gen6 Console wars because it doubled as a DVD player. Sony had some good exclusives for PS2, although multiplatform games generally would play worse on PS2 than they would on other Gen6 consoles.

Eternal Darkness and Super Mario Sunshine are great Game Cube exclusives that never got ported or sequels. I got a cheap Wii so we’d still be able to play those games. My son stuck his finger in our GameCube knocking the laser out of alignment. I’ve heard that it’s a common problem. Hopefully we’ll get a N64 Classic followed by a GameCube Classic mini so I won’t have to play on old hardware forever.

Really informative video, I especially enjoyed how you linked the N64 histories with GameCube. The Nintendo GameCube really was this bright, fun beacon of light in the middle of a grubby console war where everything else felt super dark and depressing. Sure, the PS2 and Xbox had online and dvd playability but it wasn't for me. Some of my favorite games for the system are: Mario Kart, F-Zero GX, Soul Calibur 2, Animal Crossing, Donkey Konga Jungle Beat and Twilight Princess.

I'd like another DoubleDash! Would love to see that racing mechanic refined, loved the fact every character had their own special item, using your partner to drift boost, take items from other racers, swith from driver to passenger to use a better item.. we used to have Lan parties back then and this game was the most played! We had solo races and co-op races alot of wild drunken nights!! As for the gamecube I feel it's the last home console to get great 3rd party support Resident Evil 0&4, Wwe WM 18&19, Wwe Day of Reckoning1&2, Viewtiful Joe 1&2, all the sports games were good to great (Nhl Hitz MLB Slugfest/MVP, NBA street2&3, Nfl/Ncaa 2k, Nfl blitz/street 1&2) the gamecube was a genre changer for Big Ns games: Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Star Fox adventures&assault, F-Zero GX (made by SEGA!) all were showing that Big N can still create innovative games with tried and true characters, though back then it wasn't as well received at the time, now looking back I've felt the quality of gamecube beats N64 Wii (shovelware) and Wii U and Switch as well ( Wii U ports galore so far need to see more than Odyssey Arms Splatoon 2) Just for fun top Big N home consoles 1SNES, 2Gamecube, 3NES, 4 Wii U (it has backwards compatibility with wii &gamecube, most of it's best games have been ported to Switch, still has better features than the switch.. web browser, no silly app for voice chat.. 5N64 but will admit the switch more than likely passes Wii U in a few more years. Peace and happy gaming

My last console from Nintendo was the N64 and I really didn't keep it for all that long. I also had the PS1 and original X-Box 1. Well I still have the X-Box in one of my other homes but it just collects dust. I just didn't have the time then to really sit down and play games like I do now. But now I rely on emulation or PC related ARPG/RPGs. Do enjoy your history series though, keep it up.

you kinda hit the nail on the head except that the two franchises you discounted (RE and Metroid Prime) were huge titles for that system. Buying RE4 on release day was a huge day for me in gaming. the remake of the original RE was again an amazing exclusive for the system. I feel you saying that "I'm not affected by jump scares" made you miss out on (imo) some of the best games on the system are misplaced. Both those games offer top-shelf gameplay and for the time cutting edge graphics. I hope you go back and play them because they're both worth the time. Peace! - a 33 year old gamer

Resident Evil 4 was such an awesome GameCube exclusive! I remember bragging to my mates who were completely jealous they couldn't play it because they all had a PS2! They Sony made a worse port with boring extra content, and I couldn't brag any more. Thanks Sony... you couldn't let Nintendo have that one!

How can you not cover Resident Evil IV? The Gamecube version looked much better and this was the first playable Resident Evil game, especially the bonus arcade challenge, due to weapons selection functions Capcom put in there. Was a real thorne in the side for PS2 fanboys that RE4 looked better and ran just as smoothly on GC haha. Probably did for the Gamecube sales in the UK what Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter II did for disappointing Saturn sales for Sega. The Gamecube was technically about half way between Xbox and PS2, with Baldur's Gate on GC you had the higher resolution of the Xbox version but the frame rate was not as smooth as the Xbox or PS2 (which had slightly lower quality graphics)

I've only known about the "Fire Emblem" series since last summer (other than the characters appearing in Smash). So, imagine my sticker shock when I tried to search for physical copies of "Path of Radiance" on Amazon or eBay. I'm guessing they haven't made an official emulated version yet. The Wii Virtual Console only seemed to include games up to the N64 library (not that it's online anymore).

Did you know that Dolphin supports 4 different types of 3D? It supports Anigliph (red blue), 3D TVs, Nvidia 3D, and side by side. There is also a special version of Dolphin to play in VR!

I had all three of the big 6th generation consoles, and I feel that the Gamecube still offers a unique experience for this generation of consoles. The only reason that I still have my Wii is for the GC backwards compatibility, as Nintendo doesn't seem to offer any Virtual Console for the GC.

Liked the 'Cube a lot, and it was probably my favourite of the 6th generation consoles (though I didn't really get to play much of the Dreamcast, so my opinion might have been different if I had). But I think this video is spot on; solid library of games, but didn't blow me away like other consoles such as the SNES, PS1 and (at times) the N64 did.

Nothing better than playing GameCube games in HD using a modded WiiU.

I honestly would write the star fox adventure out of it, it wasnt originally meant to be Fox McCloud as the mc, but they got cold feet near the end and got rid of Krystal as the mc and used Fox instead without changing things to fit with his style

As soon as I knew MS were price dropping the OG XB, I bought it with my staff discount at Currys XD Also got my GameCube from Currys though £116.99 for a new release system was an incredible price with a staff discount. However, games like Grandia 2 on Dreamcast being £4.97 at the time is an even bigger shock IMO.

Excellent video. The 'Cube is the console that really tried my patience with Nintendo fanboys. I didn't warm up to the GameCube, because of how lacking I felt the N64 was, but I eventually was drawn to games like Geist, Baten Kaitos, and the ability to play my GBA library. Speaking of Nintendo weirdness, ever try Odama? It's a bizarre pinball war game you play with the aid of a microphone where you yell "LEFT!" or "RIGHT!". It didn't function well, but amusing nonetheless.

Path of radiance is the crowning jewel in the franchise to this point as far as I'm concerned. I can't decide whether I'm most anticipating the new fire emblem or new metroid game for the switch, but both are going to be day 1 purchases.

The mini-DVD format allowed for short load times though, something PS2 users sure know something about
@RadioTails

Well it was more to do with spinning the disc at the same speed, which helped as well. The load times in Soul Calibar II were bad in the PS2 version, with no Link and the contorl layout not really working for the game.

Hi. Thanks. I like the cuteness of the HuCard, the PC Engine and the Color Classic. The Dreamcast looks great, it's controller looks cool too with the VMU and I like the size of the Atari cartridge. God bless, Proverbs 31

I think any games console is still worth playing today, no matter how old it is, because you're still gonna have fun (especially playing with fams or mates) and the GC is no exception. Maybe it was a bit of a commercial flop (Im not sure, it didnt seem hugely popular back then, compared to PS2 & Xbox 1) because there just didn't seem to be a broad enough range of killer games and/or those that pushed the hardware to its limits (the great N64 had the same problem, and even the Xbox to some extent). I dont really know if it was succesful or not though, I just remember having a lot of fun on the GC and being very impressed at the graphics too, this was a powerful console; possibly Nintendo's final "competitively powered" console before the Wii which despite being massively successful, was seemingly massively underpowered too, or atleast massively under-utilised. I think N64 and GC are Nintendo's best 3D era consoles, even to this day. Back then Nintendo werent just good at selling fun, they were also good at selling a console capable of making both PlayStation (my personal fave) and Xbox nervous. What happened to Nintendo's "power days"?
