If you guys like those try Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. It’s a Japan only release but you can play it on your console if you replace the back cover of the Japanese game with one of the US or PAL depending where you live. That way you don’t destroy the tabs on the inside of your console.

YES! Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 can be best described as a Japanese-equivalent of WrestleMania 2000, possessing the striking mechanic of WCW/nWo Revenge, while having all the moves from the previous WCW and WWF N64 games. It also has a 'Create-A-Belt' mode featuring dozens of belts from previous eras of wrestling, and even a customizable MMA mode. Seriously! There was even two more exclusive New Japan licensed games for the Nintendo 64 as well.

The N64 is my favorite console of all time and I didn't get one until 2009. I actually Jason bourned a friend of mine in GoldenEye using a door to trap him with. And then stepped back and took em out like in Bourne identity! Great multiplayer fun and epic solo adventures!

Great video! - this does sum the n64 up about right. I still have mine and still love to play it today, and I'm so glad that it used carts, which may have held it back at the time, but is great for playing and collecting today! It was the last great cartridge system. The love for the N64 is the nostalgia now, and the sheer amazement back then of the unbelievable 3d world's we experienced, first in mario 64 and then in ocarina of time. It was pure magic! Then when you add in the multiplayer experiences that you had with your friends and family, it's not hard to see why it is still loved. Sure you could look back now and argue the snes was better and also that playstation took over from nintendo at that time, but that is to miss the point. This was the last great console before I became an adult - and the experience was magical! Just fire the n64 up now with a copy of ocarina of time, that title screen music and the feel of the controller will transport you back in time instantly - Just magical!!

This is perhasps the fairest and most accurate take on the N64 I've seen from you, good job! As for me, I had the PlayStation first, I didn't play the N64 until many, MANY years later, but when I finally did, when I finally tried out Super Mario 64 for the first time my immediate reaction was: "Where has this been my entire life?" That game alone made everything I had ever played on the PlayStation look rather crappy in comparison, and then I played Ocarina of Time and once again, my mind was blown... No, it's not as good as the Super Nintendo, or the Wii, or the 3DS, and yeah, the library is rather small, but as you said, the system values quality over quantity!
@TheClassicWorld
@TheClassicWorld 6 лет назад
I started on the N64 as a child and got a brand new PS1 Slim for quite a lot of money at the time. I loved both. To death. And I still love the systems and games. However, I have come to realise that Nintendo and SEGA are generally better than Sony (that being, better than their PlayStation line). But, I love them all.
@TheClassicWorld
@TheClassicWorld 6 лет назад
By the way, I think the N64 is better than the SNES. Although, it's not better than the Wii, I would rather have a DS Lite and N64 for the same price as a 3DS. 3DS is not worth the price tag and only has a few great games, and it only plays DS games. The DS Lite plays the entire Game Boy Advance library (which is one of the best libraries of any console).
@Michirin9801
@Michirin9801 6 лет назад
That's a fair opinion to have, but WOW I couldn't disagree more... The DS was a pretty big disappointment to me, the few games it has that I liked are all either Platformers or RPGs, there's no decent fighting games on the system, no decent arcade racers, no beat'em ups, no Shmups, no variety! And the rhythm game offerings paled in comparison to what the PSP (and later the 3DS) had to offer... There's too much casual crap on the DS, and many DS games were ruined by gimmicky touch controls and/or microphone usage... The 3DS put the derailed train back on track in my opinion, I think the 3DS might just be the best modern system full-stop! The game offerings are much more varied, there's a load of great platformers, a spectacular version of Street Fighter IV that I can play wherever I want at 60fps, a load of great indie and retro games, unlike the DS it has Great Zelda Games, it has a much stronger 1st party lineup in general, the best Kirby games ever, the RPGs are just as good, plus the 3DS isn't just a Pokemon machine, it has WAY more to offer! Also, the rhythm games are a whole lot better... The GBA is still Nintendo's best system in my opinion though, and honestly, I think it's better to have a GBA and a 3DS than a DS, because with those two you can play the entire Nintendo Handheld catalogue! The GBA will do the entire Game Boy line, and the 3DS will do the entire DS line! In other words, the 3DS renders the DS obsolete, and is definitely worth the price-tag to me, especially when you consider that it's *the cheapest modern game system*
@TheClassicWorld
@TheClassicWorld 6 лет назад
That's true, very few fighting games. Although, I think it does have Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Gears, and god knows what else. You have the Game Boy Advance games for it, too, remember, and there are many fighting games on that (naturally, the PS1 is better for fighting games, although, I don't play PS1 fighting games, either). I guess it depends on what type of games you play, really. There are some beat em ups, though, right? And shoot em ups, if you count both libraries. You also have countless adventure games, some racing games, some sports games, like SSX, Tony Hawk, Need for Speed, LEGO series, right? Also, it has Guitar Hero. Yeah, the PSP is great, also. I was just giving you some options. PSP and DS Lite is better in most ways to 3DS or even Switch because of the smaller libraries and big price tags. And, yeah, some of the older DS games are a bit iffy... The 3DS for sure is better than the PS Vita and many other consoles in the world, and considering it's cheaper than the Switch and plays DS games, maybe it's better in many ways to the Switch? (Although, unlike the DS, it doesn't play Game Boy games and has a worse battery life.) That's true, but still, a 3DS and GBA costs much more than the DS Lite and the DS Lite is beautiful! It plays DS and GBA in one, has up to 15 hours gameplay, has 1 locked lith-ion battery, is the smallest DS ever made. Also, the GBA uses normal batteries which is annoying and costs money. I would suggest a DS Lite and PSP, rather than a 3DS and GBA. By the way, it's still a lot of money even though it sounds cheap when compared to modern systems. Also, you make a good point about the entire Game Boy line, but still... the batteries cost more than the console and games put together by the end of it. Well, at least, batteries cost a lot for me. What about this, my friend -- new friend, or enemy, as the case may be -- a Game Boy Colour, DS Lite, and PSP, for the same price as a 3DS? It gives you the Game Boy library, DS library, PSP library + PSP movies? Thoughts? :D
@Michirin9801
@Michirin9801 6 лет назад
You realise that the GBA SP also has a rechargeable battery right? And it lasts just as long as the DS Lite's... Personally, I already have a GBA SP AGS-101 (Best model) a 3DS AND a PSP so I can already play the entire Nintendo handheld library plus the PSP library, so I'm personally not missing out on much... I'm also saving up to buy a Vita because it has games that I want to play... Also, if you don't mind on missing out on the 3D effect, you can get a 2DS, which is pretty damn cheap, or better yet, a New 2DS XL, which isn't quite as cheap, but you get all of the perks of the New and the XL models! The larger screens, the faster loading, the exclusive games, so on and so forth, plus the New 2DS XL is a gorgeous-looking piece of tech~ (I sure as hell am gonna buy one! Eventually... But before I get a Switch!) And it's not even that big! It's only slightly wider and taller than the regular old 3DS, and it's actually thinner than it! Also, the battery life is better than the regular old 3DS's... To me, getting a 3DS will always be a better deal than getting a DS, because the 3DS will play the DS's library, plus the 3DS's library, which I believe to be *far* superior... And well, a hacked 3DS will play GBA games, because with a hacked 3DS you not only get access to the Ambassador-exclusive games, but also to emulators, and let's face it, the original DS is a pretty abysmal emulation machine, the only things it will run well are NES, GB/GBC and PC engine, the 3DS will do all of that, at their native resolution, with better sound, and then some!

@decadentgamer3108
@decadentgamer3108 3 года назад
Same lol And tbh, I still don't care about frame rate today. Maybe it's because I got used to how games would run during the PS1 & PS2 era where to me, as a game doesn't have horrible slow down, I'm perfectly fine with 30fps in games.

The first gen of the 3D consoles was never going to age well. The N64's video output doesn't help it either, no RGB despite the SNES having it, composite normally being the best for the PAL version. There is/was a PAL specfic aftermarket S-video cable available which is good if you have a Framemeister, or simliar, and is a useful bump in quality over composite, but it's hard to find a good one. I still love the N64 though, the libary is small but solid. It is still a good house party games console, when you and your friends are old enough to remember it at least, I doubt a 16 year old would be keen. But I am going to have to spend a big chunk of money at some point getting it HDMI modded.

The best thing (beyond multiplayer), with Goldeneye was the single player / two controller option. It let you move and shoot with one hand while looking and aiming with the other, something I've not experienced ever since on modern consoles, and despite it being the late 90's and I was playing it on a 14inch TV in my parents house smallest box-like bedroom, it felt like an out-of-body experience!

One great multiplayer N64 game that is often overlooked (including in your video) is Dr. Mario 64. It expanded nicely upon the original formula with the addition of a 4-Player mode, a score attack mode that reward style over speed, ability to save player stats, and the ability to play against an AI opponent. It is, in my opinion, the greatest puzzle game on the system as well as one of its best multiplayer titles. To this day, no Dr. Mario sequel has managed to successfully replicate the deep feature set of Dr. Mario 64. The only novel additions have been online multiplayer and leaderboards, but sadly, the score attack mode that I loved so dearly was dropped after the N64 version.
@marcosatzinger2470

I remember being one of the few N64 owners growing up. Everyone swore that PS1 had the best graphics back then (and back then that's what everyone cared about). 3D was pretty new to gamers and developers , I think the PS1's CD capability allowed for more of a mixed media type approach when making games; Video mixed with 3D game play and nice pre-rendered graphics. Seeing those pre-rendered visuals back then was amazing. Now looking back people are more impressed with the N64's real-time graphics ability and how far games like Mario 64 and the Zelda took the technology. The library is small and there are problem more poor titles then good ones on the N64, but the Good ones are really-really good. And yes the 4 player games really bring back good times on the system.

Great vid and also very accurate, I agree with pretty much every pt you made. My first N64 was in 2002 after getting a GameCube and wanting to explore more of the systems library other than the multiplayer shenanigans I got into with my cousins in the prior yrs. Today my favorite games is F-Zero X, ExciteBike 64, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, Smash, Doom 64 etc... The 64 is a system that had so much more potential if Nintendo knew how to actually design a game console, their arrogance allowed Sony to take their place and the 64s limited success damaged the prospects of the GameCube which was a much better designed machine overall. I imagine many disappointed 64 owners "switched" over to PlayStation, getting a Ps2 instead of sticking with Nintendo for the next gen.

With great games like Pikmin, Super Smash Bros Melee, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, & Metroid Prime on Gamecube within the 1st year of launch I'm surprised the Gamecube didn't have more of a following. Sure PS2 owners got plenty of great games like the .Hack Series, Ratchet & Clank, & Square Enix games like Kingdom Hearts I guess the real losers are those who ended up with Xbox for their 6th Gen Console.

I still have my N64 but haven't played it in years. I gave my 4 MB Expansion Pak to a friend who needed it for Donkey Kong 64 and misplaced the Jumper Pak that came with the console. I also want to get it HDMI-modded and get an EverDrive. Super Mario 64: I got it and the console for Christmas '96. My parents would play it when I was at school. Turok: I liked this better than GoldenEye. Of course, the Turok games are in dire need of remakes, and do them RIGHT this time. For one, the dromaeosaurs and tyrannosaurs had FEATHERS. Also, the first game features Dimetrodons. These stem-mammals NEVER encountered a dinosaur, avian or otherwise! Paleontology FAIL! Doom 64: Why the fuck didn't they give us a jump button? Don't tell us the engine/system can't handle it. Duke Nukem 3D had a jump button and that was on DOS/early Windows! Ocarina of Time: I will ALWAYS prefer the original N64 version because builds 1.0 and 1.1 (I have the latter) have the original red blood, Gerudo symbol, and Fire Temple music. Fuck the changes that Nintendo made to it! Why change what we grew up with? Diddy Kong Racing: I liked this game better than Mario Kart because the AI didn't cheat. I could leave the AI racers in the dust even as T.T. and they would never rubber-band on me five seconds later. There also wasn't an equivalent of the blue shell from Mario Kart so you knew you wouldn't get punished for staying in first place. And T.T.? I remember making my mom and a friend from school rage-quit because I would always pick him. Once you unlocked T.T., the entire game became a joke. No one and nothing in the game could beat you. Even the bosses couldn't touch you. It's like using the Compliance Regulator against Deathclaws, Tunnelers, and the post-Lonesome Road bosses in Fallout: New Vegas--a game-breaker. Banjo-Kazooie: I fucking LOVED this game to pieces! I got it as a birthday present and played the shit out of it. There was one day that summer where I did an eight-hour marathon. StarFox 64: This got me through many a weekend in middle school. I managed to unlock the Expert mode but have never finished that. WCW/nWo Revenge: This was the very first wrestling game I ever owned. I had played WWF Raw on the Sega Genesis before but that was a rental. If I wanted to play and WWE games, I had Warzone and Attitude on PS1. Those versions were superior to their N64 counterparts because of the FMV cutscenes. Quest 64: Rented it ONCE. It was terrible! South Park 64: Played it a few times. It wasn't all that faithful to the cartoon. Castlevania 64: I beat it only once, using Carrie. This was also a rental. Ultimately, I got the PS1 version of Symphony of the Night and haven't looked back since. I can easily see why Sony crushed both Nintendo and Sega. Nintendo clung to obsolete cartridges in an era of optical discs and marketed toward kids, never mind that the kids who grew up with the NES were now teenagers. No wonder Square, Capcom, and Konami cucked Nintendo by going over to Sony. Meanwhile, Sega made the Saturn hard to program for. They also fucked up the Saturn launch, and even worse considering it was hot off of the 32X debacle. Both companies shot themselves in the foot, and this is coming from someone who was a Sega kid first and Nintendo kid second. I started with a Genesis and later got a N64. I did eventually get a PS1 but didn't have a Saturn when it was new. Only within the past year did I score a Saturn, so now I can say I own all the major players of the fifth generation of consoles.

Had the same experience of holding out until the N64 before PS1 and getting the PS1 afterwards but I honestly felt quite satisfied with the Ultra 64 nonetheless. My first time playing it was before its release at a special demo building setup in Walt Disney World when visiting Florida on a holiday trip with my family in Orlando in the 90s.

“Project Reality” was to “N64” what “NX” was to Switch. Nintendo Ultra 64 was the announced name which, as you correctly report, had to be changed for legal reasons. That said, I’be seen the Konami/Ultra thing speculated but it was never confirmed. In fact, it’s probably not true based on what we do know. Nintendo publicly stated that they intended to use “Ultra” everywhere but Japan and that they couldn’t use it there due to potential rights/legal issues. This means the trouble with the name was for the Japanese market. Konami did not publish as “Ultra” there because. Konami’s front companies (Ultra, Palcom, etc) existed purely to circumvent Nintendo’s licensing requirement in NA, EU, and PAL regions but the N64 was still announced as “Ultra 64” in those regions. When they changed it to N64 their official statement was that they wanted to use the same name world-wide. Since they couldn’t use Ultra in Japan, they had to drop it. My own speculation is that that they always intended to use the same name world-wide and originally pushed ahead with the two different names thing to bring the Japanese party they were negotiating with back to the table. Nintendo had to show that they were prepared to walk away from the deal. As it turns out, they were. It seems that they could not come to an agreement so Nintendo went with Plan B.

No, not at all. It did not age well. Use emulators instead. The PS1-to-N64 controller adapter was a miracle for us tip for Goldeneye: In-game use the 1.2 controls. On your controller's setup, set the C-Buttons on the left stick (movement) and the Analog Stick on the right joystick (Free 64-axes aim). Enjoy Goldeneye the modern way

Ok, this is a fantastic video. I feel you’ve greatly redeemed yourself with the “N64 is overrated” vid. This video felt a lot more of a fair comparison, taking both the positive and negative points into account instead of just the negative like last time. I had the pleasure of growing up with BOTH the N64 and PS1 in my household, and oh man, it was great. I played on the 64 just for Nintendo and Rare, and those were some of my fondest memories. The PS1 was my source for third party games, so the lack of third party games for the 64 never bothered me as a result of having the PS1 in the house too. The N64 is still my favorite video game system to date, but I see how people may not like it. I feel that people take it way overboard nowadays, but I’m willing to listen to their logic. I perfectly understand the system’s flaws. I just choose to ignore them because it has more of my favorite games of all time than any other system. I do go back to my PS1 as well. Not a lot of games have aged well, but like the N64, the ones that did are still really fun.

I still have a dedicated 27in Panasonic CRT setup in my gameroom for N64 gaming, and it's become one of my favorite retro systems to own, and collect for, but I did not own one back in the day as I was in highschool when it was released, and was into PC gaming, but I had a few friends who had one, and the multiplayer games like Mario Kart 64, and GoldenEye where great fun indeed. Having said that I've never had any love for the stock controller, and have been collecting Superpad 64 controllers that have the D-pad right above the analog stick, and have backed the Retro Fighters Brawler 64 project twice now on Kickstarter, and love the controllers despite the original design flaw. last I think the thing I like the most about the N64 these days these days is reliability because as long as the system, and carts are kept clean it should work like a charm, although I did open mine up, and give it a good cleaning along with fresh thermal paste on the chips to help cooling, same for the Ram pak.

Really wish I hadn't missed that particular live-stream (due to being asleep at 8am on a Sunday). I agree with just about every point you made here, and you handily managed to greatly expand my knowledge of the system in general. But. I'm pretty positive you know what I'm about to say. I like Goldeneye fine, the frame rate problems are even an issue with the expansion pack, but I'm amazed you didn't mention the game where Rare looked at what they had wrought with it and basically said "We can do better....", then made Perfect Dark. Better graphics, better controls and menus, better story, way better frame rate (though if you blow your opponents up within sight of them, it still crawls for a bit). A game where you really can't get away without using the doubled memory the expansion provides, it won't even let you in to fully half of it if you don't have it. I realise I sound a bit gushing myself but, my own amazing memories of playing 4-way Proximity Pinball and sniping through walls while invisible aside, it really is a far better game than it's predecessor by any measure you care to throw at it. It's just so sad to me even now that micro(boner)soft destroyed the planned sequel (featuring a stunning revelation about a local planetary satellite), when they bought Rare and the cartoony horse manure they did release is an abomination. Otherwise, nicely done sir.

I've still got my N64 setup but rarely play it as most of the games I like have either been ported to a better system like Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask or have sequels that are far superior like Smash Bros or F-Zero. I agree as well. Playstation consoles have never had any personality to me, just mass produced electronic devices like any cd or dvd player, whereas Nintendo consoles always had loads of personality, especially in the GameBoy Color/N64/GameBoy Advance/GameCube eras. They had such fun and novel designs to their consoles and controllers, with all the different color variations and special editions (i have a classic grey and funtastic green console, and i can't even remember how many different colors of controllers i have). And i'm not even going to go into Nintendo's games, which are in a realm of their own. Even though i do own Sony consoles-- i got a PS3 when my XBox 360 died (r.i.p.) and went with a PS4 over XBOne-- i just don't like them all that much, even though i've played some great games on them. And even Nintendo themselves blew it for a while-- i have had a Wii since launch but don't 'love' it, and i never even bothered with the WiiU-- but the Switch seems to be bringing that sense of fun and cool design back to gaming. I really love my Switch with the Mario red joy-con, and the portable console you can play on your tv is such an awesome concept, if not entirely new, since i remember well, and still use, my GameBoy Player on my GameCube. So yeah, it seems as though the old Nintendo is back. And even though i started with the Atari 2600, by favorite 'console' from back then is the Commodore 64, no contest.

kdkseven yeah I agree with what you said about Nintendo consoles the nes snes n64 Gamecube all kick ass the wii is alright but not as good as Gamecube wii u is kind of underrated but pretty lackluster but the switch is very good though best Nintendo consoles are snes and Gamecube in my opinion. Every PlayStation console feels like the same crap to me I know the ps1 and ps2 get a lot of love and there still good consoles as consoles they just looked like DVD players CD players or vcrs like you said they lacked soul. In my opinion Sony not being a game company just feels well.............. how do I put this nicely....................................COMPLETELY WRONG!!!!!! What I mean is that in my opinion Nintendo sega Atari and even commodore were all were there solely to make games for genuine gamers that like good quality classics like mario Zelda metroid sonic castlevania mega man etc. Not trying to make every single person in the universe a gamer. Please this is just my option of course I don’t want to be annoying or anything also loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove the Commodore 64 it kicks ass

GaMeStuH yeah I totally agree the n64 had a horribly Small library of games And the ps1 always had a game similar to what the n64 had to offer I do think the n64 is a little bit overrated but Zelda ocarina of time and Majoras Mask super mario 64 super smash Bros Diddy kong racing and mario kart 64 the n64 was the cream of the bloody crop the golden standard. In my opinion it really goes like this the ps1 and n64 is really chose between a huge library of great games or a rather small selection of some of the best games of all time you can’t have the best of both worlds I think the ps1 is the better but I prefer the n64 because it was innovative it gave us the joystick 4 controller ports and I’m nostalgic for games like super Mario 64 and Zelda ocarina of time same with the GameCube ps2 and Xbox but that’s another argument. Ok I’m gonna say what I really think bluntly you wanna know what I think are you ready for the bold truth Are you sure it’s controversial Ok buckle up folks SONY RUINED GAMING FOR ME!!!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 I mean I really like the ps1 as a console it really is one of my favourite consoles of all time games like final fantasy 7 8 and 9, crash bandicoot, spyro, metal gear solid resident evil etc etc fantasic consoles don’t get me wrong I’m just expressing my opinion the only issue is I really dislike the direction it pushed gaming but I guess the ps3 and Xbox 360 was where it really got bad for classic retro gamers let’s just agree that snes is the best console ever no contest if you disagree just nicely let me know. I told you my opinion was dark, controversial and shady, no harsh feelings right I respect your opinion fully don’t take my opinion too seriously please I don’t wanna hurt any feelings ok:)

I was a Sega Saturn owner when the N64 came out. By the time I played Goldeneye 64 for the first time, I was already playing Quake 2 competitively. Not sure what it is about the n64 exactly, but it's a bit of a black sheep as far as my collecting goes. I love the NES, SNES, Gamecube, and even the Virtual Boy (I got one on clearance when they were being discontinued), but I've never really taken the time to play the N64 much. Compared to the PS1 and Saturn, the games do have a unique appearance to them, but for every game I've played on the N64 -- there's are multiple games on the PS1, Saturn, or PC during the time period I preferred.

The Nintendo 64 is one of the best consoles of all time, not for quantity but for quality, sure, it was a tiny library compare to the PSX but it has some games that are not just the very best ever created but art pieces that should be on a Museum; Mario 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie,donkey kong 64, Conker Bud Fur day,Majora´s Mask, Ocarina of time they were not just games, they were far ahead from anything else in that moment, they created the trends that we enjoy even today in 3D Open worlds and first person games, and saying that those games hasn´t aged well is like saying that the first NES super Mario Bros is boring, is fucking nonsense. It is funny for me that everybody that says the N64 is overrated or has aged poorly is the kind of people that growing up doesn´t actually have love for Nintendo stuff, doesn´t like 3d platformers or can´t play a FPS because the controller lacks a second stick. Do you wanna know which Nintendo console is actually overrated and aged poorly just because it was a massively stupid hot topic back in the last generation??? The Wii, and I don´t see anyone in youtube speaking shit about that piece of crap. For anyone that still loving Nintendo stuff (even if it is a grown up), still loving the old Rare magic (the best developer ever that came from UK by a mile for sure), quality 3D platformers,Racers, First Person Shotters and Zelda the Nintendo 64 is an uncanny treasure that will be always fun inventive and inmersive like no other console.

You praise the N64 yet bash the Wii? OK maybe the Wii wasn't the best thing Nintendo made (Mine stopped reading & ejecting discs from how much I played it), still it had plenty of great games like Kirby's Return to Dreamland, New Super Mario Bros Wii, & Mario Party 8. Wii offered Virtual Console allowing you to play certain highly praised N64 games on it like Pokemon Snap, Mario Party 2, Paper Mario, & more. A lot of the people who believe N64 to be overrated these days (which it kind of is) are the younger audience who started with the Gen 6 Consoles like Gamecube such as myself or the even younger audience who grew up with Gen7 onward Consoles.

I had a similar experience, Mario64 blew my mind and I skipped the PSX and Saturn and bought the system on launch specifically to play the game, and loved it. Mario64 is still in my top 5 favourite games ever though!

Have a JP version modded for RGB SCART and use it with a nice CRT. There aren't many games that have aged that well but F-Zero X, Excitebike, Waverace, Doom and Wetrix makes it worth playing today. Saturn has aged better than PS1 or N64 - but that's because 3D of that era hasn't aged too well in most cases and Saturn has more 2D games.

I felt the same way when it came out. None of my friends owned one. The games were too expensive. I basically only owned Mario 64 and rented games like Mario cart 64. As an adult I own alot more games and kind had a second honey moon with the system. It has some great games and I really don't mind the controller. I hate the lack of D pad usability on Yoshis Story. Playing a 2d platformer with an analog stick ruins the game for me.

I still find it more satisfying to own a cart than a disc! Something about it just defines strength and size and power and it feels good to hold and insert! Discs feel like frisbees and fragile and I keep worrying no matter what happens they just scratch and stop working! Mind you, carts gather dust or connectors rust, but at least that is far easier and safer to repair than discs! The carts costed more, but they were far better in durability, so you paid the price for quality of the material as well! I hated those PS1 discs so much for just feeling so cheap, and that PS1 console laser too. It feels like we never really got a decent disc system with decent readers that could handle some degree of scratching until the HD systems came in.

I think I’m about 2 to 3 years older than you but we had a really similar journey from Super Nintendo to Nintendo 64. I was a big Nintendo fanboy and I always felt a little betrayed because I really really think they misled us early on with “Project Reality”. I don’t know if you remember those silicon graphics demo photos and videos they used to even print in Nintendo power, but that’s not what we ended up getting. Also, the misrepresentation that the tech in killer instinct and cruisn USA would be available for a home console when the games ran on hard drives annoys me. They went so far as to put it in the arcade machine’s attract sounds, “Available for your home in 1995, only for the Nintendo Ultra 64”. We never got it. In the end, I was never impressed with the Nintendo 64 because, in my mind, Nintendo over hyped the system so much, that it under delivered in my eyes. I jumped ship a little quicker than you shortly before Ocarina and have 0 regrets.

Growing up with both a PS1 (xmas 97) and N64 (xmas 98) it was a case in which PS1 games could be bought for a relatively affordable amount so would get one every couple of months along with OPSM with demo disc every single month! The N64 on the other hand was purely the reserve of birthday and Christmas seeing as how expensive the games were. Though I did insist I was a Nintendo fanboy it didn't stop be drifting towards Sony and to this day my main systems have always been both a Playstation 2,3 and 4 alongside Nintendo's offering.
