I just got my AF 100 back from the attic. I want to use it for live streaming. I played around a little bit and have to say "sorry, sorry" to the AF 100 for banishing it to the attic. I was very astonished when i discovered that the AF 100 works absolutely well with the Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster and the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. I fell in love again :-) !
2018 nuthin'! I bought one a week ago for $650, took it out for some tests and was blown away - straight out of the camera it looked cinematic as hell with just a Lumix 45-150mm 4.0-5.6. Yes, a tremendous piece of kit. Now I want another one for B cam.
I’m so happy to hear this , I just picked up one off ebay for cheap , I search online and lots of people complain about it , but I see so much value in nd filters , pro audio, Interchangeable lenses, and I can use with my gh3/4 same lenses and etc. , big learning curve for me :)
Hi, I just bought one for an amazing £225 and using a vintage Tamron 28mm f2.5 that makes a nice standard lens. I have paired this up with a high-quality K%F concept dumb adapter. I bought this primarily for my RU-vid church channel. Hopefully, it will be better than using a stills camera that does video! Before the AG-AF101E I had a Canon 7d mk2, but we would sit in front of this camera, and it would stop filming after 29 minutes, plus the screen was fixed. So I couldn't tell when it had stopped recording. Really exited about using the Panasonic, because the last time I used something similar to this was in my television broadcasting days with umatic tape. Great channel and subscribed.
Loved this review. Looking to buy a used one in Jan. 2019. Oi! You needed to dust off the camera. Matching color from 3 types of cameras is tough. Heard good and bad about the Ninja Star. Thanks again!
Bought a used one in 2013 and been using it for youtube and some production work, it does compliment my GH5 as a 2nd camera. Again it come down to the user, I also output using the ninja flame. Advise is you don't have to drop a fortune to get a good production product.
I bought one on a deal. not really knowing much about the camera other than all my lenses would fit on it. I’m very happy with it so far. Also thank you for confirming I could record externally.
I literally just used this camera on a shoot with the panasonic G7. With the right lens choice, this camera still looks great. And I find that I can grade the footage to match a lot easier. Just be careful in low light.
Hi there, thanks for this brilliantly useful and informative video. I'm trying to decide between this and the Sony NEX FS100 and wondering if anyone had any advice. I want it primarily for doc-style shooting with old prime lens and editing in premiere.
does the af100 look more like film even though it's not 4k, how do you get dslr's or any of this stuff to look like film? is it the camera or can you do it with filters or post software, i want to get something that doesn't look like real life but like movies
Hi Bob, just a question about recording with the Ninja Star + AF101. The AF101 records 8 bit with hdmi and 10 bit with sdi. The Ninja Star only has hdmi input, so it doesn't record in 10bit in combination with the AF101. Wouldn't it be better to use a Samurai Blade with SDI?
It would make sense to use the Samurai but as I do not have one I was unable to test the SDI output from the camera. Considering the camera is HD only, 8 bit into a Blade recording in Proress produces lovely HD footage, unless you are doing green screen or heavy colour grading, 8 bit is more than adequate, in my opinion.
Thanks for this video very helpful...Maybe you can help me. I just got one and although at the moment I am using a canon EOS lens with an adapter..I'm learning all it functions..BUT. I reset the menu to factory reset and now I can't see any image through the lens..I checked all the menu items but maybe I missed something...thinking that becasue I don't have a panasonic/Lumix m4/3 lens it's not recognizing the canon.. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
Excellent stuff, Bob! I must say that the skin tone from the AF101 seems far better than both the other cameras you used! I'd be very interested to see the difference between the same footage recorded internally and on an Atomos. Perhaps I'll do some tests myself!
Your right, I have done no post grading at all, what you see is what came out of the cameras. I did white balance the Panny, but the 2 Sonys were left on AWB. I have always noticed the Sonys produce a redder skin tone and Pannys tend towards the more natural 'yellowish' tone, I could have matched them better in post but I wanted the video to show what all cameras looked like straight out of the camera, or Ninja in the case of the Panny.

RockOnEnt Hi, how much you paid for it? Right now i have an offer to buy it for 400€ body with batteries, and i already have a plenty of M43 lenses and Atomos Ninja 2 for better recording format. Would you consider this a "good deal" for this camera? 400€
I still use my AF100 with the Atomos Shogun for corporate video even though I also have the GH4. The Af100 is so much easier to work with and does produce great quality video when set up right and with good lighting
I’ve been using gh2/3/4 and decided to pick up af100 off ebay for sub$400, to cheap to pass up :) ... but I’m little intimidated by using a pro camcorder (even if it’s out dated) ... I’m an aspiring writer/filmmaker ... lots to learn :)
I had one of these. I used it for several years. It does work well. I used it with the Samurai Blade. I sold it and replaced it with a GH4. The GH4 gets better footage even in HD. I was disappointed they didn't upgrade this camera instead of replacing it with the EVA. I like the EVA but what about a GH5 with a full sized body, SDI out, pro audio, large batteries, and neutral density filters.
Gerald Prost .. I'm right there with you.. meaning I had the af100.. and I thought it looked so filmic.. I then got the GH4.. loved that.. sold it as I heard of gh5.. then, shortly in my 30 day trial... This was the the time of NAB...sure enough.. Panny finally announced a new cinema camera.. everyone and me...thought it was the upgrade to A F100.. it wasn't.. even Different engineer.. the EVA camera is engineered by Taka Matsui..who also designed Varicam and the old HVX200... The Af100 was actually designed by same engineer as dvx200.. my point is even though this EVA is 4k.. better codec..35mm sensor etc.. I still am not sold.. I see images still flat and not as punchy.. the AF100 looks so cinematic.. I am now in my trial with GH5s..and I'm not happy.. I actually like the image of GH4 better.. looked more filmic to me... As far as EVA goes.. I'm gonna try that rental as well.. My question to you is.. what about EVA? What is it about EVA, you don't like?
Gerald Prost We have all got sucked into the “pixel peeper” group-think. 4K, 5K, 6K, 8K. 422, 444, 4444 color-space. We end up putting too much time and money into specs and get distracted from writing and shooting good stories. (I was as guilty as anyone). The AF 100 is a great camera to learn on, and the more you learn the better your footage will look. What it won’t do is write, shoot and edit a great story. ;)rantover
bro how did you get all that dust on your camera and it's on the sensor. Why are you not keeping the lens on or using the sensor cover that comes with it. GEEZ! You probably can't get good looking footage even with an external recorder with a sensor looking like that. DAMN!
I still use the AF100, here is an example ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wp6JMcKXvVw.html, but I'm about to get a GH5 or Blackmagic and just use the AF100 for B camera and recording audio - I think its sometimes forgotten that the AF100 records good quality audio.
I'd really like to want this camera as an upgrade to my just as old GH2. This is an actual video camera, not a stills camera. BUT the dynamic range and the highlight roll off is just so awful! Also, generally the image looks too electronic, whereas the GH2, in my opinion, looks a tad more cinematic. And the roll off is so much better! Again, I'd really like to want this camera, it's the only video camera I can afford!
I agree with your assessment of the AF100. I tended to under expose with this camera slightly, then in Resolve I'd tweak the curves and desaturate the bright highlights.
I like the af101 but I could only find a body for UK500 or with lenses for around UK1500. I thought they would be cheaper.... I think I'd rather go with a Canon 80D for that money (IBIS and auto focus.... ) admittedly a little more expensive...
I probably would agree, the Canon pixel shift focus (or whatever its called) is awesome and very fast. The 2 really big advantages of the 101 are the pro XLR audio inputs and audio monitoring and the ND filters. If autofocus is important forget the 101, its not great, as I said in the review it is better if used fully manual. The second hand value of the 101 has really gone up, no idea why.

Don't sale this as a run & gun. Just put it outside a sunny day & our dead without cast, light, and Hollywood style production. It has like almost no dynamic range and lives in shadow areas only. Professionals at the time were so angry because it had such a arch behavior with highlights, plus behavior and settings can drive u completely mad and are so different & sometimes just jokes and gimmicks. The camera was sold to the market unfinished and it was such a disaster in the community that Panasonic decided to kill that kid and never really upgraded it. Witch is unique !!!!
