Short answer - yes. This is the one generation where I feel the Sega system completely outclassed its Nintendo contemporary. It's just such a shame so many of the Saturn's gems were left in Japan due to this obsessive focus on 3D games in the West at the time. The Sega Saturn is the absolute pinnacle of 2D gaming.

If the Saturn was priced more competitively I think it would have done better. The Nintendo 64 was $199 at launch and the Sega Saturn was $399 at launch.

I got 1 for $25 with several games years ago. I remember when I was 10 or 11 a friend of my brothers was selling his for $400. Where is an 11 or a 13 years old(brother) suppose to get $400 to purchase a used Saturn. This was probably sometime in 1998.
@dondl578
@dondl578 7 лет назад
True the Saturn did come out first and the cost of the N64 was offset by the expensive carts at the time. But think about it this way. Unless you were an adult at the time and can afford it, a parent who doesn't know about video games will see the price difference between the Saturn and the N64 consoles. One is $199 the other $399. Even if they pair mario 64 which at the time was $70 and a saturn game say $40 the price would still be $440 vs $270. These are of course scenarios based on what we experienced on our younger days. People's experiences will vary. Also the N64 Carts just like other games experience price drops as time went on.

Not everyone liked Virtua Fighter. The Wii was $249. N64 was $199 at launch
@dondl578
@dondl578 7 лет назад
Not sure why you're trying to argue when there's no argument. I am just providing experiences that happened not just to myself but I'm sure everyone else. Were talking about the cost and what a parent would see not the features the console has. If you agree with that fine, if not then it's fine too. This is gonna be my last message on the subject and I'm not gonna start an argument over this.

I think Sony did that because they were more open about who got to develop for the PS1, there's no Net Yaroze equivalent of the Saturn of N64. Because Sony weren't an established console maker they had to get the third parties on board (or in the case of Psygnosis, buy them out) a lot of the developers that were creating games for the Amiga and the PC moved on to the PS1 in greater numbers than the Saturn or N64, there were a lot more big British games on the PS1 (by developers that were previously primarily working on the Amiga) Also, the PS1 was marketed far better than the other consoles. The PS1 was being sold not to teenagers or to parents to buy for their children, it was being marketed to adults, to 20 somethings to buy for themselves. The PlayStation was being found in nightclubs where you'd never before seen a games console. The Wipeout series was pretty much designed around dance music of the sort that was being played in nightclubs (and a pretty good soundtrack those games have too, if you ever download ROM in the PakkISO rar + apes format, the apes are the soundtrack of the game, you can play them in VLC or SMPlayer and can convert them to FLAC or MP3) The PlayStation made gaming cool and it was helped by a plethora of third party developers experimenting.
@IronsWorks1990
@IronsWorks1990 7 лет назад
Sega made awful marketing decisions and Nintendo's decision to stick with Cartridges hurt the system more than anything made games to expensive to produce and for us to buy led to a limited library. Sony on the other hand nailed it, marketing, the choice to push for 3D, being easy and cheap to produce games for making it attractive for developers. Also Sony pushed it as a lifestyle product not a toy, it was a real gamechanger.

The Saturn is an amazing system. I prefer it to the N64. I also slightly prefer it to the ps1. Its 2D games is miles better than the ps1. Saturn rpgs are highly rated, unique, and sought after. Another great thing about the Saturn is that it brought the Sega arcade feel and classics to your home. The other systems didn't do that. Saturn is extremely underrated. I am a proud owner of one and I take care of it like it was treasure. The bad thing about the Saturn is that almost all of their highly rated games are very expensive and their amazing library of games are mostly Japanese exclusive with no English.

It really is an interesting fact that the Saturn outsold the N64 in Japan. And it was well deserved, the Saturn was certainly competitive with its Japanese library, but I guess the genres it focused on simply were not popular enough in the West.

@@conradojavier7547 Kalinske claims the order for the early launch came from Sega of Japan and that he didn't want to do it. Not sure if he was telling the truth. But that hurt Sega's momentum launching a $400 console when it wasn't ready to go against a $300 console that would be available the same holiday season. Then when they brought in Bernie Stolar he finished the job and blocked AAA titles from Japan, either not localizing them at all or in the case of Panzer Dragoon Saga, only printing a meager 20,000 copies.

I never knew anyone who had a Saturn growing up, I remember seeing the large jewel cases on store shelves and thinking that they looked interesting, but never asked for one. All my friends had Playstation's and I had an N64, so I got to play games on both those systems. When I grew up and began to collect video games, I finally picked up the Sega Saturn and gotta admit what a great console. It's one of my personal favorite systems now, especially for import games.

I got a modded Saturn a few years ago, and it’s seen way more play than my N64 in recent years. Sure, at the time, N64 and PS1 did 3D better. But we’re talking mid to late 90s 3D, which really hasn’t aged well. But, it was brand new at the time, and people swallowed those polygons right up. Now that the novelty of 3D itself has worn off, I think it’s allowed the Saturn to become the true hidden treasure that it really is, particularly in the West these days. Nobody did 2D better than the Saturn. All the best ports of the Capcom and SNK fighters were on the Saturn. The ROM cart only made things better in that department too. I’m glad to see it’s been slowly gaining more recognition over the years. It’s just a shame that most of the best titles are ones you have to import.

Saturn does 3d better. Quad shade polygon render more as you can just remove the length of one side to make a triangle. This is why all games use unreal engine and graphics can be seen from iPhone to PS5 looking similar. When the Gameboy advance and GameCube where night and day.

So, I'm not quite sure how old you are, and I'm sorry for doing this in the comments since it's such a large topic, but I remember this console generation very vividly. I was 14 when the Nintendo 64 finally released in 1996 (US). I was a Nintendo fan, we started with an Atari 2600 and 7800, and then when the NES came out, that was a real game-changer. We weren't lucky enough to have parents who bought into the computer market, so the non-IBM PC-compatible stuff like the C64, ST, etc were completely foreign to me, back then all I knew were a few game consoles. Likewise, the SNES knocked my socks off and was still one of my favorite systems. Anyway, there were a couple of interesting things going on at the time. For starters, you had stuff prior to the Saturn, PSX, and N64 that was more obscure but still present, like all of the Genesis add-ons (Sega CD and 32X mainly), the Philips CD-i (which was little more than a curiosity to a young me at a kiosk in my local Sears store), the 3DO (launched at a ridiculous $699, I had a friend whose brother bought one of the original Panasonic models once it had dropped to $400, so I got to play that quite a bit), the Atari Jaguar (I bought one off ebay with like 12 games in 1999 for $25 and regret later selling it), and of course the 16-bit systems which still had late life breathed into them with some very compelling games. You also had some curious arcade machines like Cruis'n USA and Killer Instinct running on Midway-developed hardware that didn't really have anything to do with the Nintendo64, but were advertising coming to what was then supposed to be called Nintendo's "Ultra 64." Killer Instinct hit arcades in October 1994. So to anyone who was a Nintendo fan, those games were very enticing and it became quite a bit frustrating as the wait grew. It's probably worth noting that Virtua Fighter hit arcades in 1993 and Virtua Racing hit in 1992, and those two games were revolutionary with their use of 3D polygons. While Cruis'n and KI looked nice at the time, I had literally never seen anything like those two Sega games when I played them. So I was a Nintendo fan (but always lusting after the Sega I didn't have), I had the AMAZING Donkey Kong Country which renewed my interest in the SNES along with classics like Star Fox and Stunt Race FX which both had actual 3D graphics. So when the Saturn hit, it was the same old story: I'm jealous, but I can wait for something better, which was surely the N64. A friend of mine had a subscription to EGM and he'd photocopy me black and white pages of stuff like screen shots, I was drooling over them. Compared to the Saturn and PSX, the N64 graphics were so much crisper (ironic since Nintendo64 textures are often so blurry). And don't get me wrong, the PSX was looking like a beast. Their advertisements clearly skewed towards a more mature audience and some of the exclusives looked awesome. Sony was hiding cheats and hints in their ads at the time, so pretty much ANYTHING that Sony ran ads for, whether in print or on TV, I wanted badly because their marketing was so good (it was pretty much as good as Sega's marketing was back in the Genesis days, but more clever). In the 16-bit era, I'd go with my mom to Sears just to have a chance to play what I thought must be an awesome game on Sega CD. In the 32-bit era, Blockbuster had set up a Saturn console with Daytona USA. I was and am a HUGE fan of Daytona USA. It's such a limited game but still so much fun to play. Despite its Saturn flaws, I still loved it. And that's the thing: while Saturn doesn't sometimes do multi-plat ports that well, thanks to its difficult architecture and abnormal quad polygons, it's got the backing of a strong lineup of Sega arcade hits and a whole lot of charm. Saturn is one of those consoles that gives you a warm feeling when you turn it on. I've never gotten a warm feeling watching the PSX boot up, even though I loved the games. The PSX always felt like a heartless tool to me, probably because it seemed to do everything so effortlessly. I know I'm rambling, but I'll get to the point. The Saturn come out, and I lusted after it like the Genesis, but I couldn't have it (especially not at $399!). Then the PSX came out, and I lusted after it because the games looked good and the ads were awesome. But my parents were unwilling to buy us another console and I wanted to wait for the N64. So FINALLY, Christmas of 1996, it had been released and I took my Christmas money and bought a used N64 at Gamestop for $130. What a deal! And I had one game, Blast Corps. I didn't even have Mario 64, the best game ever when it was released (I eventually bought it). Ultimately, while I was a little let down by the graphical limitations, I loved the N64 for what it was and it really was and is a great system. I like the fact that the smaller library makes it easier to find the real gems, and I like the controller in spite of its limitations (namely the lack of two analogue sticks, which wasn't really an issue until Sony did it and a light bulb eventually went off in everyone's heads). It's hard to rank them, but I think the N64 was one of the best consoles ever made, and has some of the greatest games ever made. The Playstation, on the other hand, has its own quirks that I grew to love when I bought one second-hand later on. Devs quickly embraced the Dual Shock much to Sony's benefit. The DS design is one of the best controllers ever made, period. The sticks were superior to Nintendo's and having two of them is great. PSX had a lot of great Namco arcade ports and other exclusives. I also love the weird texture warping that you get at the bottom of the screen in most racing games because of the quirks of the hardware, PSX graphics do have their own charm. It was a breeze to develop for so there's a ton of games, but ultimately its broad library is what kind of brings it down, because there's many "meh" titles in there as well which makes selecting games for it a bit of a chore. It also suffers from the usual Sony quality control problems. I remember EGM claiming that PSX consoles were having problems at a rate of about 20-to-1 compared to the Saturn, and my personal experience seems to echo something like that: my second-hand Saturn still works to this day, while my second-hand PSX eventually got tossed when I got tired of turning it upside-down to read game discs. Yeah, my PSX would only read discs if you turned it upside-down (this was actually a pretty common problem). And I swear I'll wrap it up soon, as we come to the Saturn. What a lovely piece of hardware. The PSX design is functional, and somewhat unique, but not very pretty. The N64 is interesting in its own way, but not sleek at all. The Saturn just looks cool. This is probably me projecting my non-ownership envy and eventual ownership joy onto the design, but I just love the way the console looks, almost now retro and modern at the same time, and when it was new, there was nothing like it. As I mentioned before, it had the Sega arcade games going for it (Sega Rally, one of my all time favorites) but it was also a bit unique thanks to those quad polygons, which made ports on Saturn look a bit different (for better or worse). And while the architecture was a pain, those who spent the time to master it got quite a lot for their effort. Some of the best Saturn games, in my opinion, really do look better than some of the best PSX games. Saturn hardware had features the PSX hardware was lacking, like a higher resolution mode, and Saturn was capable of some of the best 2D graphics ever seen compared to its peers. My only real gripe of the Saturn is that the US controller is rather garbage. I don't know what it is about Sega controllers, but after growing up with Nintendo controllers and feeling the Dual Shock, the US Saturn controller feels like crap. The Nights 3D controller is probably the best controller Sega has ever designed, it's really good, but only the Dreamcast controller comes close to that. Genesis and Saturn controllers feel too light and the buttons are too loose, while the (Saturn) bumper buttons barely even click. Ultimately, while the PSX's popularity and huge software support made it a great system to own and number 1 at its time (a huge feat for newcomer Sony), its bland-looking hardware, high volume of mediocre titles, high defect rate, and overall lack of character make the system a lot less appealing these days. The N64, while rightfully loved for its first-party titles, has the opposite problem of not having enough games in various genres to truly enjoy. I still rank it as one of the best consoles ever and I have no regrets of buying one, but it's kind of a console that you play for its exclusives when you're not playing your other console. The Sega Saturn kind of fits in between the two, with a lot of great exclusives but also a lot of good ports making up a pretty decent library. It's got a lot of character and because it has a reputation of "failure," it's a bit more of a unique. It's also got some really awesome MIDI capabilities too, which I just recently found out about. It's worth noting that the Saturn did extremely well in Japan right up until the end. And here in the US, I knew lots of people who owned one. For the first few years it seemed like it was Sony vs Sega, with Nintendo being the also-ran. Slowly but surely, the Saturn lost ground but it appeared it might stick around until SOA hammered the nail into the coffin with the announcement of the Dreamcast and their end of Saturn support. Even to a non-owner, it was sad, but to Sega's credit, they continued to publish stellar first-party titles late in life like "Burning Rangers." Saturn has a very unique place in gaming history, one that deserves to be recognized. Ultimately, if you owned any one of these three consoles, you probably loved it while still envying the others. It may very well be one of the best console generations ever.

In retrospect, the N64 hardware was unmitigated trash. All that BS hype surrounding the SGI cpu and it turned out to be low-rez muddovsion. Nintendo and Rare titles managed to shine through the junk hardware though. At least the Saturn was a 2D beast with a solid library of games, providing you imported. The N64 was mediocre at everything. Crap storage medium, virtually no 3rd party support, awful 3D and whether directed by Nintendo or not, no real good 2D games.

@@V3ntilator Yeah, most of what ur saying is obvious lol. The only p1 port i prefer over a saturns is maybe symphony of the night, but then again saturn stilllll has that edge because of the unique character. The ps1 version just happens to run better. But i mean, u take the saturn version, put it on ps1, thats the complete castlevania sotn it would have all the saturn + all the sony additions. Saturn is cool for bomberman, imports, especially fighters it has alot of fighters, shoot em ups, even some rpgs. Even the saturn sonic jam is unique, the time trial modes and some of the modes in that game arent in any other version of any sonic game, its just a shame sonic 2 happens to lag lol, it would literally be the perfect sonic game if it didnt. Saturns version of mortal kombat trilogy is better to than ps1, loads faster better quality sprites and sound and more buttons 6 button layout for combos is the best, its D pad is great to. And if u wanna get more into it u can buy a saturn arcade stick.

*Yes and no.* It all depends on the genres of games you enjoy. The big killer advantage the N64 had was that it came with four controller slots, opening a brilliant Era of local multi-player heaven. 3d Shooters, Adventure games and 3D Platformers rule the N64 Library and many of them hold up today. The N64 was also graphically Superior, though only when it was properly utilized later in its cycle. Early on I'd say that the Saturn had more visually appealing games right out of the gate. The N64 controller, though less comfortable then the Saturns, offered a lot of room for developers to experiment with their games. That said the Saturn's Library is nothing to laugh at. Panzer Dragoon 2 is easily better than Star Fox 64. Racing, RPGs and fighting games are also Superior on the Saturn. Again, it just comes down to what genres of games you prefer.

I recently picked up an n64 and Saturn and so far the Saturn just destroys the N64 for me. I didn't have either growing up so bias isn't speaking for me. The Saturn has simply kept me glued to it with the games and many of those games also hold up well today both visually and in gameplay. The N64, on the other hand, having a weird control scheme for a lot of games and it graphically being kind of a 3d nightmare machine, just doesn't hold up well.

The Saturn was WAY better than the PS1 and substantially better than the N64 in most areas. The N64's only downside was using cartridges. Play X-Men V Street Fighter or Marvel vs Street Fighter on the Saturn. Then play it on the PS1. Night and day. It's not even possible on the N64. The Saturn was the best system. Sega's marketing was crap and the consumer got it wrong. I always preferred playing my Saturn over my friends' PS1s and N64s. They did too. We had WAY more fun playing Saturn. I had games their systems could never handle.

I miss my Saturn. Sold it when I was a kid to get a PlayStation. Couldn't get games, and never could find a memory card for my Saturn at the time so it was frustrating. I didn't get the system "new" but got it in a purchase of store returns my parents made to resell (I kept the Saturn stuff from it). I had Nights, Bug (another great platformer), Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, among others and lots of demo disks (which I probably played the most). If I still had the system itself now I could find games thanks to online sales... oh well. I had a blast with my PlayStation and N64. I always wanted Croc (on either system but could never find it, only had the demo), Clockwork Knight, several shooters, and many others that I had demos of.

You bet your ass it was better. Kids say they love the N64 because they grew up with it at just the right time. But the Saturn Library was leagues better. However it carried a stigma because SEGA pulled a stunt where retailers had NO idea it was coming out the next day after a showcasing. At the time, those retailers were very pissed off. SEARS and Kaybee toys to name just TWO refused to carry any SEGA hardware EVER again after the stunt. It then is blamed in part for the reason why Dreamcast didn't do so well, but though that may have been a piece of it, it's a small piece. Microsoft did a bit of the OS works for the Dreamcast, and left it hugely easy for people to get past the region lock which let people easily rip games along with an st key code onto the same rom disc while using disc juggler and the pirating console game craze officially began in a way never seen before. That's truly what killed the Dreamcast. Both consoles however, much in part to the many great games on both, slapped the utter SHIT out of the N64 line up. PS N64 was also built on a lie. The ULTRA hardware in arcades was claiming this is what would be in your living room, and soon. But right before the home version of the arcade kit, the console that was ALSO to be named the ULTRA 64, suddenly had a name change VERY SHORTLY before launch. When asked about it they answered ; "It's to avoid CONFUSION". Uh uh, the reality was, it was to sneak past hardware that was NOTHING close to the promise of that arcade hardware, and hope no one would sue. It seemed interestingly enough, they got lucky. But even at that time many people put out a pole.... Was the N64 a disappointment? And there was an over whelming yes shortly after launch of the hardware that fell utterly short of the promise. These are some of the ugliest truths that people preach otherwise what happened in the industry regarding console hardware. But they are the truth, and it's why SEGA has been so salty towards the west and why they reeled back from supporting much in the west other than what they thought were safe bets, even when they do a half ass job. You know, like Sonic games.. Meanwhile we never got our promised PSO2 and YES it was PROMISED, and Border Break was held back in japanese arcades, because as it remained an arcade game, there was a blatant excuse as to why it would not do well in the USA, and that excuse would be accurate. However now the game is finally coming to the Japanese PS4. We'll see if Sega finally puts it's man pants back on after shrinking back many years ago, and fulfills that promise made a mere couple of years ago or so, that they truly wanted to do better for their western fans. Here's to hopes that some of you actually read these facts and can start preach ing the truths, rather than just repeating what the popular belief is by people who half do their research, like IGN.

And yeah Nintendo said the reason they went with cartridges instead of the SMART CD decision back int he day was; Oh, well we're making videogames, not movies. SO we decided to stick with the Cartridge. A decision that plagued the system through it's entire life as explained in the video with massive tearing away of storage ability for larger games, textures, and video nearly absent because of such. The real decision behind this? Because you had no choice. You obviously HAD to use Nintendo's cartridges and pay THEIR price if you were a developer to put things on their system. It in turn also lead to why several companies left it with a smaller library and went with the other consoles available. Not just because they had less to work with when it came to a cartridge, but they were paying a terrible high price for so much less space to work with. And when your game was a bust on a cartridge instead of a CD, your company ate it so much harder and could destroy your company with just ONE miss step.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1013">16:53</a> *"The Nintendo 64, sadly, only offers one high qaulity JRPG, on the entire platform!"* I'd argue Paper Mario is not a standard JRPG. Heck, Ogre Battle 64 has far more JRPG trappings than Paper mario. Unless you're talking about turn based gameplay, In which case are we forgetting about Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2? And in more broad strokes, there are a number of games that have RPG elements, such as both Zelda titles, Hybrid Heaven, both Geomon titles, Guantlet legends, Harvest Moon, etc. It should also be noted that, in Japan, there were even more RPGs for the system that we never saw. Like Wonder Project, and the first Custom Robo. *"One would gather this is probably, most likely due to the storage limitations in which the Cartridges have."* Yes, and no. There was a trend at this time where RPGs had to have elaborate FMVs. This was to make the fantasy worlds feel more grand and alive than the graphics of the era could facilitate. Plus they looked good for ads. However, the immense size of these video files and compression technology at the time meant these ate up huge amounts of shortage space. This is the lone reason why so many RPGs had to be on multiple discs. Storage and cost were really the only areas where the PlayStation and the Saturn dominated the 64. In terms of graphical fidelity and processing power the 64 had the definite edge. So when you say... *"Which I guess must've been achievable due to the simpler graphics."* That's simply not the case. It really was because of the ridiculous amount of space required for the FMVs, and those being seen as such a mandatory aspect of the genre by it's developers. The 64's cartridges simply didn't have the volume of storage capacity when compared to CD, nor could they be easily swapped during gameplay. And meant smaller profits due to their higher cost. So they moved elsewhere. Sony knew this, and took advantage both in their marketing and when enlisting 3rd parties. It has nothing to do with the "simpler graphics". And while Paper Mario may appear simpler, it would not even be possible on the Playstation, at least not without taking a massive graphical hit thanks to the 64 being far more capable when it comes to real time rendering. In fact, if you took all of the FMVs out of Final Fantasy VII it would have easily fit on a 64 Cart, and the 3D models, the actual game play, would've been able to take advantage of the 64's hardware and looked much nicer.

Neither got the to live up to their full potentials. N64's Disk Drive was canned before it got the to chance to show what it could do, and the whole Saturn suffered the same fate. Both were extremely difficult to program for, at the time, leaving 3rd parties to only put the minimal amount of effort in. I can only name 2 third party games that had extra content on Saturn, Mega Man 8 and Castlevania: SotN, and they were both badly ported and suffered framerate and transparency issues issues. I can't really name any for the 64. It was a first party only affair, for the most part. Maybe Tony Hawk had something cool. Sega's big Saturn Sonic game got canned, and although there were other great games, and ports of genesis Sonic games, it wasn't enough to keep it afloat. In terms of games, I'll try to list the best I can from both. N64: Mario 64 Zelda OoT Zelda MM Banjo Kazooie Banjo Tooie Star Fox 64: Lylat Wars Kirby 64 Glover Super Smash Bros. Conker's Bad Fur Day Donkey Kong 64 Goldeneye Perfect Dark F-Zero X DOOM 64 Buck Bumble Saturn... On second thought I'll let someone else list that. All I know is NiGHTS, Sonic R, MM8, and Castlevania. I'm sure there was more though.

here's the thing about the sega saturn: if you purchased a new system at the time that the psx and saturn were out, you didn't want to play 2d games, you wanted 3d games, as that was the major trend of the time, and playing 2d games mostly seemed like something you could have already played on your genesis or snes. hardcore gamers like us are the only ones who really didn't care about the 3d trend of the time.

still it has to have the worst 3D graphics seen on any system. Blurry unclear low-res upscaled. Looks just bad. I think I prefer colour clash on the ZX Spectrum over the blurryness of the Nintendo 64

@D core In hindsight, the Nintendo 64 was a pretty weird system. The controller was weird, the decision to go with expensive cartridges was weird, and the internal hardware was in a weird place where early texture filtering was possible even though storing and displaying detailed textures was not. It hasn’t aged well, exactly. The N64’s notoriously poor video output exacerbated the characteristically blurry graphics. It looks pretty bad.

The N64 has Buck Bumble, therefore the N64 wins. No possible rebuttal.

I have a Saturn and love it! It's a great and had over a thousand games but they were mostly crap. The Playstation had a vast library of mediocrity and catered to a vast amount of groups spanning many genres. The 64 imo was unique! The attention that was given to each experience was wonderful. Next level even. It may have only had 260 or so games but the vast majority of what was put on the system was good especially the AAA games and the first party games. The Nintendo made games were for the most part brilliant. It honestly should have been more popular in the west considering the fascination in shooters. Shooters ,3d platforms,racing games, sports games just weren't as good on other consoles. Graphically or control wise. People do talk crap about the 64 controller now but that's because we cant play it now. Your just not used to it anymore which makes sense bc there is a new industry standard. But I find that getting back into 64 is fine once you adjust back to a more archaic setup. It's like dreamcast aswell

No playstation had tekken 2 3, final fantasy, gran tourismo, metal gear, resident evil 2, THE BEST RPGS from crono cross to legend of dragoon. Madden, nba live when they were great, all n64 had was platformers and wrestling games. Oh and playstation had tomb raider 2

@@senorsnipey1595 they where alot of the same quest 64 was worst then any ps1 jrpg. They had no racers with real cars just kart games. And alot of platformers. After playing Mario 64 I didn't care about banjo or donkey Kong. Winback 64 was complete trash

Great video, but you left out Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64 (and also for the Saturn) I understand from looking at your videos you are a huge Streetfighter fan and they were indeed great on the Saturn. And the N64 MKT pales in comparison to the PSX version but outright ignoring it is a bit harsh. The MK games of that era are still very playable and even more so then the recent ones.

I never had or wanted an N64. Playing Goldeneye at my friend's was enough to get my fix. Yet I still play my Saturn to this day. It sits proudly alongside my Dreamcast, Playstation, and Playstation 4 (the only systems I still play regularly).

Always preferred Sega and Sony games tended towards a more adult orientated audience. Bummer about the Saturn. Love that console. Gimme Shinobi over Mario any day.

There's some talk about how the Saturn was "hard to program for" and used quads instead of triangles. However, the Nintendo 64 was arguably one of the worst designed systems in history. 64 bit processor with only 4 MB of RAM, hardly any texture space, pointless mip mapping which took up all the space, refusing to release the microcode so developers could optimize things until very late in the process, etc. The carts were actually fine...Factor 5 were able to get around that limitation with "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine" by somehow getting the microcode, writing their own, using the streaming power of the cart to swap textures dynamically, etc. If Nintendo were less bullish and more open with developers from the start, more games would have come out as more clever developers would have wanted to try their hand at making a game, just like Factor 5. "Hard to program for" is a lame excuse...system specs are all that are needed, and full transparency...Nintendo felt that only their "Dream team" were worthy of such honours, which was just a total clown move by them.

Nintendo 64 had 5 MBs of RAM. Saturn had 4 MBs of RAM. N64 had Superior Filtering and Texture Mapping capabilities. While Saturn was superior at Mapping, and Layering since it used Bit Mapping. BOTH Machines had DEDICATED 2D AND 3D Hardware. But Developers were too lazy to want to learn any of it. Saturn could Recaculate and Difuse Layers, N64 could Quad Layer and ReMap, Saturn could Handle Translucency and Wire Framing, so could N64. Regarding the Transparency, it was LAZY developers on for BOTH Machines. SEGA offered developers better tools for Saturn, and Nintendo had plenty of times offered better tools to for N64. But PSX was easier to program because it could use Software tools even though it was vasty inferior and UNDERPOWERED compared to Saturn and N64 but developers started caring more about Money and Deals than ingenuity and begin taking lousy shortcuts.
