F-Zero X Expansion is amazing, so many cool tracks that i have imagined and made. Nintendo should definetly release 64DD content on Virtual console.

There is a patched version which has English text instead of Japanese if you search for it, it works on Project64. Though you can't save your tracks in the game itself so you'll have to use save states to save them.

The N64 was a failure in Japan (a distant third behind PS and Saturn) yet they got the 64DD. Here in the States, where the N64 was a respectable number two, we didn't get the 64DD. You really have to wonder what they were thinking.
@leaderx7547

At the time, everything got released in Japan first. The Mega Drive flopped in Japan, yet Japan got the Mega CD add-on a year before the US got it, and two years before the rest of the West got it.

Luminous One Yep, that's just the way it was back then with Japanese products, as the Japanese overall are very patriotic to their home country, and was just seen as good business practice for a Japanese company to release a product there first before the rest of the world, plus the world while having the internet was still not has globalized as it is today. Also speaking of today you still see companies like SONY releasing Japanese only models of mobile phones, just like Samsung does in Korea, and Lenovo/Motorola does in China. So I guess a lot of it has changed, but a lot still has not when it comes to product releases lol! However it should be mentioned a US development N64DD was found that does not run Japanese N64DD software, both retail, or developmental, and is currently owned by RU-vidr MetalJesusRocks who got lucky finding it in the wild of Seattle. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b64Bx0WKh7M.html

64DD... I tried all it's games trough emulation, a huge thanks to people who made that possible. It's such a shame that Nintendo's best level creator, F-Zero Expansion Kit, has never seen a rerelease. Did I already mention I'm thankful to people who made the ROM available for this gem that was released on an add-on console that was released only in Japan and sold about 15 000 copies?

I own a N6DD in my collection, but only because I am a hardcore F-Zero X fan and spent a lot of time playing it as a kid, I spent a huge amount on it and am very thankful to have the 64DD. I'm not sure I am interested in any of the mario artist games or doshin the giant, it's mostly a F-Zero X Expansion Kit machine, I had wanted that game with it's track & car editor for the longest time, and watched videos of a pro player playing through his custom tracks in the early youtube days. People who buy the 64DD simply to own it as a collector's peice raise the price of the console further and make it really hard for fans of F-Zero X to get that holy grail of a game.

As kid in the 90s I wasn't sold on the DD. I didn't want to buy another peice of a equipment plus I was thinking a CDROM addon would have been more appropriate to bring parity with the PS1 and Sega Saturn for storage. I like the concept of the DD now it looks like it has a lot of great features that would have made use of a writable disk but 64mb is still a far cry from cheap CDs that held at the time 650mb.

I really hope that Nintendo continues to innovate. Their games have always been top notch and their hardware, once understood has also been amazing. I feel a bit sad that Microsoft and Sony are using the same architecture as PC’s. I know it makes sense but I miss the days of new architectures and custom chips, I am old ☺️ I realise you can get that same feeling on PC by building your own custom rig but it’s different somehow.

Nintendo hasn't done anything creative since the n64. The wii was a marketing gimmick that tried to use "motion control" to cover up the fact that the actual console used ps2 era graphics in the world of ps3 and xbox 360. The wii sold alot of units world wide because of the motion control gimmick, but ultimately the extremely low price probably made it "best seller." The wii u was just a wii with a screen in the controller, and the switch is just a high powered 2ds. Nintendo has gotta step it up if they are gonna stay relevant.
@GamingDelight
@GamingDelight 4 года назад
ricky sanchez All of that is dead wrong. You call a hybrid console, a console with 3D display without glasses, a console with motion controls, and etc. "not innovative"? The competition never did any of that before Nintendo.
@ricky-sanchez
@ricky-sanchez 4 года назад
@@GamingDelight video games companies have been experimenting with motion control for years, even in the 90s. All Nintendo did was attempt to capitalize on it. But they did so cheaply. Wii was just a shovel ware console. And let's not discuss Wii U.👎

As 18 when the 64 came out I knew that the PlayStation was going to dominate those years as I never anticipated at the 64 have the capability of doing what it said it could do knowing now that this DD out on system it just goes to show that having a system already set ready to go is better than having something to add on plus I hate DLCs what the go with that

If Nintendo just did a cd add-on instead, released it quickly for cheap(ish) sold cd games along with a cart (for load times/stop piracy) they could have had the ultimate console.
@MrAdrenaline1982
@MrAdrenaline1982 5 лет назад
The average N64 game was around $65 to $75 back then. Adding a CD to a cart and they would've sold for at least 90-95, but likely more like $110 each.
@kannabi
@kannabi 5 лет назад
MrAdrenaline1982 I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo given how greedy they are, but when a game is released, the cost obviously includes all the work put into the game, if that’s already there for the cart, adding a cd (or a few) would be very little extra cost. I think if they were clever they’d charge 5-10 extra, but again, it’s all hypothetical, just could have been cool :)

ricky sanchez No. Cautious. If their partnership with Sony had stuck, Sony would've destroyed Nintendo completely. Instead, Sony has only been giving Nintendo a run for their money, but with more advanced and more affordable technologies, Sony Interactive Entertainment's ridiculous content policies (compared to what Nintendo's are today), the Switch dominating the market, and more third-party and indie developers flocking to the Switch, Sony will never completely beat Nintendo. And with the upcoming PS5's low demand and possibly hefty price tag, things will only get worse for Sony.

The reason the N64DD never released in the west was because Nintendo's North American and European branches didn't want it. Add-ons were infamous and notorious for being nothing but a burden in the hardware market and Nintendo's western branches didn't want Nintendo as a whole making the same mistakes Sega as well as Atari did with the likes of the Sega(or in rest of the world's case the Mega CD), 32X, and the Atari Jaguar CD. Nintendo of America and Europe knew all too well of how add-ons faired and didn't think it was worth it; and was deemed a failure from the get go.

The remixed dungeons may have been the most basic and only part of the planned Ura Zelda that got finished, before Aonouma accepted the challenge of making a new game instead in less than a year. So by the time Wind Waker was about to release, Nintendo thought "hey, we could release the part of Ura zelda we did finish a few years ago." And thus Master Quest was released.

No , rather than add-ons they just " improve " current gen consoles. IE" XBOX ONE S , XBOX ONE X , PS4 PRO . I guess that it works for them now . Maybe ? But it just makes me not want to buy the next gen consoles at launch or even close to launch , if they are just going to improve on it in a few years .

True but after 3 years when a console specs are starting to get dated, would you rather a game company release a brand new console that has a totally new hardware and not very compatible with the system you have? Or would you rather buy a much less expensive expansion pack and extend the life of a console with an upgrade? I think hardware add on make a lot of sense compared to a brand new console when the improvement just doesnt seem that significant these days.

Go to Patreon and give at least $1 a month to help Top Hat, please. He works hard to make these videos, so you should do something to show your gratitude for his effort. Anyway, I think it's funny to consider that the 64DD would have been competing against the Dreamcast. I firmly believe that in Nintendo's arrogance they honestly believed that consumers would slavishly buy anything Nintendo produced. You can only fly so high until you burn your wings and crash back down again. The crater Nintendo landed in is full of burning 64DDs. I can't tell if Nintendo are stubborn or if they live in their own bubble and are genuinely unaware when they have a bad idea, let alone their tenacious attempts to find a market for something as misguided as the 64DD. The N64 was terribly designed hardware and games on suddenly archaic cartridges. No matter how much you may love Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 etc. bolting things to the console wasn't likely to fool anyone. N64 was decimated by Sony. Next video? - - History of Microsoft in the games industry. - Top Hat's Definitive History of First-Person Shooters (lol). - The PS3 and why Sony's dominance faultered (for a while). - Top 10 Tastiest games you should eat. - Definitive Documentary of Windows PC gaming. - Micro-Computer text and graphical adventure games (such as, The Hobbit on ZX Spectrum). - Definitive History of sports video games. - Definitive Documentary about SNK and the Neo Geo. - Xbox 360 and PS3. (I mean, PS...REEEEEEEE!)

Because Sony took a $100 loss on most PlayStations sold, the Nintendo 64 made more profit than the PlayStation.
