The 16-bit era embodied a special kind of magic that has yet to be repeated.

I grew up with the Sega Genesis, but I can appreciate the SNES.

A little off topic, but I teach high school and the last few years I’ve brought in my SNES Classic on the last day of school. Kids love playing Contra 3, Street Fighter II Turbo, and Super Punch Out. Many have never played these games and are immediately hooked by how much fun they are.

SNES is legendary.

I think the generation the SNES is attached to is one of the greatest generations. I think Genesis (and every addon) and the SNES defined gaming going forward. Those 2D, 16-bit graphics are beautiful, and being able to go to an arcade was exciting.

I grew up with a Super Nintendo, but naturally "moved on" as the 64, PS1, Gamecube, Xbox 360, and so on as they came along. But then the Wii had the Virtual Console and so I went further down the SNES iceberg, playing games like Act Raiser, Super Castlevania IV, and Contra III for the first time, and that's when I really realized how great its games were and how well they hold up. Excellent video and choice of games to show off, man!

The SNES/SFC and the Genesis/Megadrive were unique and special, and made each other better.

I didn’t grow up with the Super Nintendo, but since I started collecting in 2017, it had quickly become one of my absolute favorite consoles to collect and play games for, such a fantastic library with graphics and gameplay that aged beautifully. It is definitely one of my favorite consoles personally.

Super Nintendo will always be my all-time favorite cause it's the first system my family owned. Still remember coming home from school and seeing my mom in the living room playing Super Mario World after she constantly told us she would never buy any video games. I'm still going back and enjoying the games I missed out on and overlooked when I was a kid.

It's worth remembering that the SNES's biggest rival, the Genesis (Megadrive), came out well over a year before the SNES, during a time of great technical innovation, and it still held it's own against Nintendo's juggernaut.

All this is so beautiful... Magic in its purest form! beautiful memories, childhood, family, friends and lots of fun.

You should consider doing a video in this style for the original Playstation. I've just recently started appreciating JRPGs and that has completely changed my view on the Playstation, it's incredible with it's catalog of RPGs.

Had a Sega Genesis growing up. To play Snes I had to go to a friends house. I liked the games on there at the time too. I always liked the controller. For my retro collection I bought a Snes. I am glad that I did because I find it just as good as the Sega Genesis. My favorite Snes game is Super Mario World which is my fav Mario game of all time.

My favorite console is the genesis because i love action platformers, beat em ups and shoot em ups. But snes and pc engine are amazing too. Not even counting the arcades! 90s was such a good time for games!

My personal favorite would be a weird one, but right now it is a modded wii u, because it can play almost all the nintendo games I could ever want, the gamepad is really comfortable. While I love the SNES and it was my favorite console, the wii u has so much variety and also has quality games so I would choose it any day.

I had both consoles back in the day. Loved them both, but purchased way more Genesis games.

I didn't have a Super Nintendo growing up cause all my cousins had one so I asked my parents for a Genesis. This way if I wanted to play Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World I would just pay them a visit lol

I still own and play my childhood SNES. I won’t pick just one favorite console (you can’t make me!) but the SNES is certainly special and, as the first console we got to own at home, it will always be one of my favorites!

The feel of the concave and convex buttons are the reason why I have nostalgia for the console... just a conforming fit to enhance your don't have to look down-ness when your a new player or a kid without a chance to win...

SNES is a great home console with exclusives whereas Sega was continually attempting to bring the arcade experience home. Each had a different focus, in my opinion and are equally great.

Nintendo and Atari for me. They’re the times I wanna remember. The original gameboy was fun. And I totlly wanted a Lynx when I saw it in the Sears and/or Service Merchandise catalogue, but that never happened. Still haven’t played one either.

The console is almost perfect. It would be nicer in black/red color, it doesn't have the"high definition graphics" label, the volume control for the headphones and the "blast processing power"...but, it is almost perfect😊

First off just want to say I love the channel! I find your videos to be much more entertaining than most retro videos I watch. I just thought I'd drop a little tip about Trinitrons. It looks like your TV might have a bit of the classic Sony "red push" issue going on from your footage. There's a setting in the service menu (labeled slightly different on different models) it usually goes by something to the effect of AXNT or AXIS. If you disable that, or turn down in some cases, you can greatly improve the amount of red push seen on the screen. Any-hoo, keep up the awesome videos and keep eating bananas my friend! 👌💪🍌 Just thought I'd throw that out there.

The first time I played Mute City in F-Zero really blew my mind.

The A B buttons being convex and the X and Y being concave on the US version is pretty different to what I grew up with in England. No concave buttons whatsoever, but a lovely Green , Blue, Yellow and Red instead of the purple. When I think of the SNES the 4 colours make up a massive chunk of my memory, it just seemed so vibrant and appealing

Love the SNES! I'd love to see your take on the MegaDrive also. I was unfortunate with timing as a kid, I got a NES just before the SNES dropped; subsequently, I didn't have either SNES or MegaDrive but loved both. I'd have probably argued for SNES in the console wars as a kid, while still arguing both are great. With regard to the SNES' frame rate, I believe it fluctuated around 59fps, which can cause issues with some display scalers. That being said, my OSSC doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Keep doing what you do Banana-man, I love your channel!

I loved the SNES. It was my last Nintendo console, and the loss of 3rd party support was a big part of that.

I bought a SNES again after getting a PS1. I liked the Playstation but I was missing all the good 2D stuff. It's still the console that I go back to most.

The SNES is my favorite system of all time, with the PS1 and PS2 coming in close behind. While I love the Genesis (and any system of this era, really), the SNES is where I honestly had the most fun. All the incredible RPGs that I could just throw myself into, hours spent on Street Fighter 2 and Final Fight. Just amazing.

I really have to give it to the Snes and always have, bias and non bias. It is just absolutely superb in all categories! To be honest the 16 bit era is superior to what came next, and I think that the ease of use is the driving factor. Little to no load times, plug a game in and you are good, people tend to forget that aspect often. We waste so much time in loading, as great as the generations after were, they take more time starting and transitioning. The games were solid and many are works of art, it is a close call between Snes and Genesis. It is all speculation but I think the Snes really holds its own in contest, without needing much debate to back up it's credentials.

I grew up with both a NES and my Sega Genesis, though I knew quite a few people who owned a SNES (friends and cousins), there's a plethora of game's I enjoy on the SNES to this day like Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country trilogy, TMNT IV: Turtles in time, Pocky and Rocky, Zelda: A Link to the past, Super Metroid, Tetris/Dr. Mario, Killer Instinct, etc.

Even as a dedicated Sega guy, the SNES is a classic juggernaut that still beats the crap out of todays works. But still Sega Genesis #1 🎉

Great video! I grew up in the '90s, so I actually agree. The SNES has aged like a fine wine! As a kid, I only had an NES and Genesis, but I did get to play the SNES from time to time at friends and neighbors' houses. Honestly, the 16-bit era blew me away when I was little. It is hard for me to choose between the SNES and Genesis as my favorite, too. I don't care, though, since still play both consoles and have a blast!

No disagreement here. My friend had a Genesis. I enjoyed playing Sonic and other SG games. We did argue about which system was better. In the end, we played both. It was great. Nowadays, only got time for the shorter games. Can’t sit on my rear end for a long time to play 10 hour plus games. Super Famicom/Nintendo get my vote. Peace!-)

The PSX really captured my top spot. There were great choices of 2D and 3D games. Game designers really tried to make unique products. I miss the innovation.

I was raised with Sega consoles mostly, but I did have a NES and N64 briefly. One of my friends back then had a SNES, I thought it was decent. Anyhow, like you said it's what you were raised around that will be the best in a person's opinion (usually.) The Mega Drive (Genesis) was what i thought was the best, now as an adult I can't decide between the Saturn or Dreamcast.

The last years of SNES gave birth to modern gaming. Games starting looking really good and were getting long. You could save. Starting to feel open world. Does anyone start playing LttP, FF6, or Chrono Trigger and say I can't handle these old graphics and primitive gameplay? Never, not even to this day. Because this is exactly when games got truely classic.

Damn was hoping for some sort of tournament style set of 1v1s where "everyone" put up the best platformer they could and SNES put up the best platformer it could, etc.

The snes had an amazing library that covered pretty much every genre. The only ones I can think of that can hang with it is the first two PlayStations. You could find something for everyone on those things

I grew up with the Genesis but over the past few years I've been playing a crap ton of SNES games and I've realized I missed out big time.

Personal favorite 2D console is the Sega Genesis and 3D is Xbox 360. Each had the best competition IMO and think is a great thing (I also love SNES/PS3 with TG-16/Wii growing on me yearly).

I was a child of divorce and had both SNES and Genesis. One for mom's and the other for dad's. At the time I prefered the Genesis. It just felt better. NBA Jam, Street Fighter, games like that were not as good on SNES. But now at 40 years old, I think the Library of SNES games makes it the GOAT. All my precious JRPS were SNES

I agree. The SNES took what was best about the 8-Bit generation and brought it to a new level. Visuals, music, new ways to play. It was a golden age of play. I still have my launch SNES

I agree with you on the SNES being my favorite. Yes, it helped that I was a teen in the 90's. And I believe they worked hard at being great with having stiff competition from the Genesis. Great times!

I grew up with genesis but got an snes in my mid teens and never looked back. Super Metroid and Zelda ALTTP were both my favorite games from their franchises. With classics like Harvest Moon, Pilotwings, Biker Mice, and MegaManX, my free time was spent.

7:20 pro-tip about Super-R-Type for SNES, there's an IPS patch that enables the SA-1 chip and eliminates slowdown. The same guy made patches for Contra 3 and Gradius 3 as well. Gradius 3 was especially notorious for slowdown since it was a launch title, so the developers didn't have the experience on how to maximize the consoles hardware yet. konami learned quickly though.

Super Nintendo is my personal favorite. It was Nintendo doimg everything they do at its most refined, and had a balance of simplicity and complexity that hits the sweet spot for me in its library. The pixel are and chip tunes of that time have generally aged extremely well, and there are quite a few games to still discover or return to time and again.

I got into video games because of the arcade game Primal Rage so when I got to look around at Toys’R’Us I found a few choices. I had to decide between Genesis and SNES. I checked out the color theme for each and the SNES being purple and grey looked like something that belonged in my younger sisters room. And that was the turning point. So yeah for me the purple still throws me off even though today I love the color purple 😂

As much as I love SNES the PS2 had more games and more hits and sales. And I grew up on the SNES.

Although it was my third console, it cemented my love for gaming.

I guess I'll rank my top 5 consoles: 1. Playstation 2 especially with it being backwards compatible with the Playstation 1. So, it was 2 consoles in one plus it had great games, it has MANY games that I still haven't played yet; it had a DVD player, and audio player. It was the best value for the money and since I'm saying Playstation 2 it also = Playstation 1. 2. Super Nintendo - For reasons said here 3. Sega Genesis 4. NES 5. Xbox 360.

I had a super NES as a kid back in 1992. Me and my big brother would play super Mario world, f zero, starfox, super mario kart, super Mario all stars, street fighter 2, Mario paint among others. It was an amazing time to be a kid. It was such a leap from the original NES. We had a sega Genesis too but once i had the super nes it was pretty much all i played. And we even had a sega cd and sega nomad and even the rare sega channel which would let you play new games through your cable company before they even hit stores. So from 92 to 95 it was pretty much super NES all day everyday, especially when donkey kong country and super Metroid came out. I would rate the super nes as one of the best consoles ever made, just under the PlayStation 2 imo. They're both incredible and both have amazing libraries that will last for generations

The controller really seals the deal. SNES is the greatest, and as games get more complex the perfect mix of 2D quick simplicity and complexion in so many genres, it just sets itself apart more and more as a timeless and unique experience.

It's kind of ironic that you pointed out that the Super Nintendos controller has no gimmicks when practically every console or accessory Nintendo has ever released was a gimmick. Some examples of this. N64 - The weird controller shape Virtual Boy - A VR console in that really weird shape with a stand. The Nintendo Wii - An entirely motion controlled console The Wii U - The Controller having a interactive screen on it. The Switch - A switchable handheld and TV console. The Gameboy - A handheld gaming console, which at the time was a huge gimmick that started the handheld console craze. The Nintendo DS - A touchscreen handheld console. The Nintendo 3DS - Had a very pointless 3D mode build into it.

Yes, people are VERY nostalgic and VERY adamant when explaining how their favorite games (as a kid, but they never mention it) are the best of the best of the best, even today. For me, I have experience with the SNES. It's was fun times. Although, regarding the purple thing, here in Europe we had the Famicom design, which I happen to prefer. Albeit - different exterior, same inside.

I grew up with the NES but switched to the Genesis during the 16-Bit era. However, most of my friends owned am SNES back then. I never hated the SNES and played it over my friends houses while my friends would play my Genesis. When I was finally old enough to work, I got both a Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. I bought back all of my childhood favorites on the Genesis but I also bought a lot of the games my friends would play on the SNES to see what it was like on the other side. Fast forward to today and while I was team Sega back in the 90s, the reality of it all is that the time period would not have been as great as it was without both the Genesis and SNES. Sure, they were competition but both systems had unique games that balanced each other out. During the 16-Bit console wars, iron sharpened iron. There was a Sonic for Mario. A Phantasy Star for Final Fantasy. A Shining Force for Fire Emblem (if you were able to import and understand back then). A Virtua Racing for. Star Fox. You guys get the point. It was competition in the best way possible and as gamers, we all won at the end of the day. So to me, there was no clear winner in terms of game output and the more I purchase for both consoles, the more I realize how tiny the gaming world was to all of us back then. To your point @RetroBird this is a great video and I wouldn't think of anyone as wrong for taking the stance of the SNES. But I also wouldn't blame anyone for taking the side of the Genesis either. This is one of my favorite eras of gaming and although I am still very much Team Genesis, there is a special place in my heart for the SNES and in this day in age, there is no one over the other. It's just about what I am in the mood to play at the moment I am in. Actually, please make that Genesis video as well. Besides the Genesis, I used to own a Sega CD Model 2 and a 32X back then as well. I would love to hear your thoughts on that system as well. So yes, I do agree with you but I also agree with the other side of this coin as well. It's all fun at the end of the day and that is what is truly important.

At the peak of the 16bit console war I remember both Mega Drive and SNES were on one level with each having their own unique quirks. However, it was Mortal Kombat 2 to me that showed the technical advantages of the SNES. Even though I was a Sega guy I thought the SNES was cool 😊 But it took me 30+ years to get one, finally 😅
