The Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 and the Sony A7III is an excellent combination for Astrophotography and low light video work. The Tamron 17-28 is sharp and has great contrast, colors and resolution for shooting stars and the Milky Way at night and when it's paired with the A7III you get fantastic low light photos of stars. In this video I show you how to shoot astrophotography with the Tamron 17-28 and the Sony A7iii as your main setup.

I've been checking out the PhotoPills app and they have a calculator for the length of shutter speed based on your actual camera and sensor size. For the A73 at 17mm and f2.8 it suggests a maximum shutter speed of 7.71 seconds. It's under "spot stars". I've always used the 500 rule buy I'm going to experiment with the suggested slower speeds.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 4 года назад
Oh interesting!! I use the photo pills app all the time for planning shoots but never saw that. Thanks for the tip! I def noticed a tiny bit of bluring above 20 seconds. So most of mine where there or below. Cheers!
@NikolajFHalberg
@NikolajFHalberg 4 года назад
The NPF rule with the accurate setting is a bit unrealistic to use as the shutterspeed is way to low so you would need to crank the ISO up way too high which will affect dynamic range. It would require shooting multiple shots & use stacking to get as good results as with the "normal" 500 rule & single exposures. It's also worth mentioning that the 500 rule uses the FF equivalent focal length so for Jake's a6600 with for example a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens it would be 500/(16mm * 1.5) = 20,8 seconds or 15 seconds for minimal streaking stars. It is also beneficial to put 2 functions on custom buttons (for Sony mirrorless). 1) Focus magnifier so you can get a 11,7x magnification for focus 2) Bright Monitoring to make it easier to compose your shots. I shot this yesterday using an a6400 with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 15" - f/1.4 - ISO 2500 - 6 image panorama www.flickr.com/photos/nhalberg/49707822547/in/dateposted-public/
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 4 года назад
Great image! and yeah with the 6600 I do the calculation for what the full frame equivalent would be. I was surprised how much more difficult it was to get the sigma in focus. I use the focus magnifier as well and it helps a lot. I suppose my issues could have been the cold with the sigma as well. Cheers and again love the image!

@@JakeSloan The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 is VERY fiddly to focus. It's back & forth until you hit that perfect fraction of an inch where you have critical focus & if you bump the tripod or move the tripod you can start all over again ;) But it is VERY sharp even wide open.
@JakeSloan

That’s true! It’s extremely sharp but the manual focus is extremely difficult to work with in the dark lol. Next time I’ll have to go earlier set it up and focus it while there is still light and then wait lol. Cheers!

Little trick for focussing: search the brightest star in your viewfinder and try focussing on it. Right when you get it, the outline of the star will shift from green to reddish (or vice versa if you approacht from the other end). And for stopping down: It really doesn't pay off to get "more sharpness" in the sky because the stars are far too small to be resolved (read: the stars we see are just light bleeding over from the central pixel, only a handful of stars have been pictured with a "high" resolution by the most powerful telescopes we've got) so the less noise we can get, the better the picture will be. Safe to say that a big apperture is always better. If your foreground is out of focus, use focus stacking.
@JakeSloan

I agree and great tips! The only time I recommend stopping down a bit is with some lenses that have very poor performance wide open, fortunately thats pretty rare now! Cheers

Super cool! I have finally been able to watch this video. Ironically I have less time to watch and make videos now because I have been spending a lot of time with the family and I watch my 2 year old with everyone at home. Great video as always dude! It’s a great lens for night photography. Even though it’s not a 1.4 or 1.8 still surprises me. Also helps that Sony’s low light is amazing.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 4 года назад
what's amazing is the low light performance of the A7iii is better than the A7Riii or A7rIV! but yeah they have great low light another thing that is AMAZING is the Tamron beats out the new Sony 20mm for sharpness in the corners!!! Tamron is killing it with these lenses. Cheers bro and family time is awesome get it while you can before we all have to go back to work lol.

Awesome video. A lot of the tips regarding Astro were things I knew already, but I didn’t know about the infinity focus tip you shared for this lens. The screen doesn’t work on my Sony, and my tripod is a mini size (Gorillapod) which can make it tricky to find good focus through my EVF when shooting Astro. The infinity focus tip for this lens made the entire video well worth it. Bravo! You’ve just emboldened me to go for one last try at Milky Way pics this year once the new moon comes around.

This was absolutely awesome! A few months ago I bought a used a7ii to decide if I really wanted to go mirrorless (I know, why not years ago). I immediately fell in love with it and decided to finally try astrophotography, which I’d been thinking about forever. My first try was 2 months ago in absolutely perfect conditions with the Sony 28-70 kit lens. I made pretty much every noob mistake, but using the Topaz Labs apps I was able to salvage something that. The second month was a complete bust (all out of focus), and finally last week I got another chance, with my newly purchased Tamron 17-28 and I figured out the focus through trial and error and pretty much nailed it. Your advice in this video was fantastic and I’m getting read to pull the trigger on an a7riii body, so should be lots of additional capability, including bright monitoring. Thanks for sharing all of your secrets! Your work is amazing!!

Nice video. I appreciate a test of a lens I already have but didn't test for stars yet. Isn't some environmental criteria affecting the infinity focus point, like temperature? As far as I understand, materials in the lens react on cold or warm situations, stretches or shortens the lens somehow. So, manufactures built in that "movable" infinity point, because it depends on under what circumstances you are shooting. It may be like you said in the cold, but shooting stars in a tropical situation may be different. Everyone should try it for themselves.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 4 года назад
I’m sure it would make a slight difference on focus but even shooting during the day in warm temps I’ve found it to be pretty much right on! Yes everyone should test for themselves and know their equipment well. Cheers!

Surprised, because I have used my A7r3 for astro, by the amount of chrominance noise on white snow even at iso 3200. I haven't shot snow at night, so that may be the explanation. But have you used specialist noise reduction software like Topaz? I find that really good for high iso bird shots, some of which have white feathers.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 4 года назад
I have not. I applied a slight bit of noise reduction in Lightroom when I process these. The A7III does have slightly better low light performance than the A7RIII but its not huge maybe a half stop better. I need to check out topaz. I've heard great things about its ability to reduce noise! Did you download the raw files?

at 9:26 of the video, you show the screen focusing to infinity. Is this visual whatever meters to infinity being produce by the lens in manual mode or is there a setting in the sony to get the bar at the bottom of the screen to show infinity. I ask this because I'm getting into Astro but havent got my 17-28 2.8 Tamron yet. I cant replicate your screen on my sony now with any lens I have. I was trying to see how bad the CA is in the corners or if it was just my copy. at 17mm in the corners at 2.8 the stars dont look great and like small lines. almost looks like they are trailing but it's not since center stars are dots. some bright stuff can look winged too
