I am a proud owner of a mk3 Supra turbo targa from 1987, American spec. It’s very addicting to want to drive it, gets a lot of looks and is very comfortable. The only real downside I could see for some people is that they aren’t fast by modern standards. You need to put a lot of work and money into one of these if you want to compete against modern cars. So I kinda just don’t, I simply enjoy the mk3 for what it is.

Exactly, no need to "keep up" with today's car just to justify your purchase. You buy the car because you like it!

As a fellow owner I wouldn't say you need to put a tone or a lot of work for them to compete with modern factory spec cars. They still handle pretty well without all the fancy traction and suspension systems of the modern day, you just have to be more atuned with a natural ability to drive a raw car. I will say upgrading the turbo or uping the boost with a fuel management system and maybe doing some suspension mods, along with the obvious bolt-ons is needed to compete with modern cars but again the turbo engines don't take much to make a extra 50-100hp to give it the pep it needs.

@bearymos4805 7 месяцев назад
honestly if your ok running piggy backs, there's many ways to make near 450whp on a healthy 7m for only a few mods. not the fastest by all means, but keeps up with a lot that's out there

I'm on an 88' NA auto lol. Would be embarrassing to mention if I didn't absolutely adore this car so much and it's a LOT of car. You're never going to get the interior/exterior styling or comfort like that anymore. Not even to mention the raw as hell driving experience. With a beefy Whiteline front swaybar on full stiff, FA 500 coilovers, and PS4 S tires, you get an incredibly well handling luxury GT car. She gets all the looks and attention. Always fun sparking up conversation with enthusiasts or past owners (NO ONE has these now)

Was my first car after getting the driving permit. Didn't have the money at the time to maintain and upkeep it. It consumed gasoline like a dehydrated person in a hot desert, and for every 500 miles i had to feed it a quarter gallon of oil, cause it was just squirting it left and right out of those valves..the turbo charger had cracks from the heat, previous owner built a downpipe from appearantly scrapt yard material and DMV was not happy to see it. The rear wheel drive was making this thing unable to drive as soon as a sneeze of snow was on the road, and driving faster then 50 mph would create loud noise from the side mirrors/faulty front insulation ? Nevertheless, if this series was still being built i would absolutely buy a factory fresh MK3 Supra instantly, just for the looks of it and the feeling of starting the ignition and feeling that engine run. That turbo spin when you floor the pedal is so heavinly...

Never read a more interesting life story,it was what the heart wants vs what you can afford.But as you said it seems that the previous owners didn’t really care much about the car as you did.

Ive spent a few years learning the car. Pulled my 7mge and swapped it over to a w58 manual. Painted it multiple times with spray cans, rebuilt the front end. And a bunch of other things im sure ive forgotten over the years. Idk where i saw the car. Idk what the fascination was. But now its basically almost done and im making it into a missile. It will be drifted, beaten on, and just overall abused. It may not look pretty, but how many people sre going to be able to say they did that with a supra, a car that people pay life savings for. I think its neat, but shes still trucking along and even if it isnt perfect this car has a special place being the first car ive done a lot on. The first car i pulled an engine, transmission, front end, done a swap. Almost crashed, found friends. Ect ect. And all for the small small price of $3000 when i was 18. Im going to keep it till it is totaled or till i get old an unable to do much with it. Till then imma keep souping

Seven years with a 1990 Supra turbo manual sport-roof model, it never let me down. Of course I had to maintain it, but isn't that what you do with a car? Performance, styling, room for passengers, room for cargo, and a pleasure to drive. No, it wasn't the fastest car out there, but it was comfortable, handled beautifully, and would eat up the miles all day long.

Not sure how that's possible unless it was junk. I did the same with an 88' auto/NA for $8,000 same year. She was in very nice shape though 115K miles. Just sitting outside since, she needs all the bumpers painted so really a full paint job. With purchase price I'm about $23K into her now.

They really are amazing cars, but finding a great example of one that has been cared for is extremely hard. There are a lot of minor things to go wrong or that need fixing that all need to be aware of. It's truly an enthusiast level vehicle, but worth it all.
