Is "The Voice" Rigged? (Vocal Coach Reacts) 

i watched the whole season (only cause ariana was a coach in it) and wendy was one of my favorites since the beginning, some of the performances she gave were beyond what the show is supposed to be like. at some point i thought it was ridiculous to the other contestants cause in my head she had the win secured. the thing is tho, after the coaches select the top 20, the artists who stay (and eventually win) in the show are decided for votes, so it clearly is not only about -the voice- but the popularity of the contestants.

how wendy did not win still baffles me… ALSO i recommend checking *out “no more tears (enough is enough)” by bella de Napoli and katie rae, the* best battle of the season and my personal favorite performance OVERALL, so many vocal moments I think you’d enjoy, they’re from team ariana.

I did a deep dive on Wendy when I first saw her on the show. She had a record deal exactly when Whitney Houston was an up and coming talent. Wendy said that her label wanted her to be like Whitney and do pop songs, but she wanted to have more variety in her music. She has a couple of songs that are hits in the Philippines, so she has charted, just not in America. But she dropped the label in pursuit of singing other genres of music. Touring with Julio Inglesias and most recently country singers. Wendy decided to come on The Voice so she could finally be in charge of the music she wanted to put out, and how she wanted to use her instrument. I know people are saying “Wendy has industry connections”, yeah but she wants to be able to earn a record deal on her own terms, not through people who know her to sing a certain genre and then force her to sing only that. So yes, in my opinion, Wendy should have won!

I’m not mad. Second place is always the winner for me because it’s the highest placement you can be without getting locked into a terrible record deal that has gotten none of the winners a stable career.

She should have won but the winner is based on votes from the viewers. Im sure if it was up to the coaches the ending would have been different.

Joshua Vacanti was another incredible contestant this season! I was so shocked when he got eliminated. He had so many mind-blowing covers!!!

what pisses me off is that the guys in GNT individually are pretty mediocre. the girl is phenomenal but she carried them and I think if a group should win The Voice they should all have equally strong voices. also literally everyone else in the top 5 was miles and miles ahead of GNT, especially Wendy and Mia. I do think it would have been a little unfair for Wendy to win as she kind of has already had a career as a touring backup singer with lots of famous people, but she and everyone else in the finale had better vocals than GNT.

I think where Wendy faltered is sometimes she fails to connect with the audience (in my opinion ofc). She is definitely is one of the best vocalist the show has graced, no doubt. But i think one needs to connect with their audience to do extremely well. Yeah GNT wasnt the best vocally, but they ultimately connected with the crowd.

Wendy has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard, but it always looked like she was just singing the words and not feeling the words. There was just something missing.

Okay yes my husband and I had this whole convo…it’s so unfair that they let duos and trios compete. Each one of the memebers in Girl Named Tom don’t stand a CHANCE individually up against half of the final 10. Are they insanely marketable? Sure. Are they the best “VOICE” not by a long shot.

You HAVE to watch Girl Name Tom’s audition, “Helplessly Hoping”. That’s a better example of their magical harmony.

I wouldn't say this was Girl Named Tom's best performance of the season. You should check out their version of Dust in the Wind, as well as River. That being said, Wendy Moten is incredible and I know that she will get a record deal whether she won or not.

Wendy didn't have the best personality compared to the others in the finals. Since America votes the final 13 or however much, personality and likeability plays a huge role on whether or not someone wins. The trio was highly consistent throughout the entire show and their harmonies were beautiful.

I love Wendy but my favorite was Jershika hands down. I think Jershika had so much passion and range in her voice like she literally can reach the depths of hell and then suddenly go up into the heavens. Like her tone as well is so unique. Jershika and Joshua were hands down the best for me. I hope I can hear their own music one day !

Wendy had the best voice, but that’s about it in terms of artistry. I think they also look at the connection with the crowd & more relevant talent, and I think that’s where she fell behind.

I never watched the Voice, but I was pins and needles when Wendy sang. It’s insane how a voice can have that effect.

i agree that this wasn't GNTs best performance but PLEASE react to "Wichita Lineman". It was the most magical performance this entire season and it showed all the reasons why GNT won. I promise you won't regret it.

I would like to see tristan react to all the finalists on the voice this season. They were all so good this season and they were also different from each other.

Wendy's a phenomenal singer but I felt disconnected from her performances. I was hoping Paris would win cause he had the voice AND the charisma to back him up.

Wendy was definitely the better vocalist. Singers like her always get screwed over.

The Chain wasn’t GnT’s best performance. You gotta listen to Wichita Lineman. I think their mastery is how they build harmonies and perfectly blend their voices together by singing the same vowel sounds, putting the same level of intensity into each note, etc.

it makes me sad that people think that a girl named tom didn’t do well when they were on top almost all season and then when they won and everyone was upset that they won as a “trio” but they let trios in the competition for a reason😭

Tbh that was one of GNT worst performances, they do better with slower paced, mellow songs. Their audition was amazing and their spotify is full of gems, both originals and covers.

It's called the "Voice" for a reason, right? It should be all about the "Voice!" Although, the trio could sing, they can't SANG, like Wendy could. Plus, the trio's singing ability was bland and they even broke at times. Voice is RIGGED.

“Why can’t I” voice crack towards the end is the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. 😭 don’t even watch this show anymore but she definitely deserved to win if it wasn’t a popularity contest

The weird thing is Wendy Moten is a well established singer in the UK, she was charting #5 on the billboard top 100, in like 1993. she had a huge amount of success very early on, by the time this came out, she has released like 5 albums. I'm not sure why she was on the voice. She obviously didn't need much in the way of coaching. Was this some sort of special season with well established people? Cause Moten didn't need their help from what it looks like to me, and I highly doubt she will have any issues now after those performances from the voice in finding success.

Wendy is obviously a great vocalist but what y'all are failing to acknowledge is GNT was charting Top 5 on ITunes every single week where as other contestants, including Wendy, were struggling to chart in the top 10 on ITunes. So clearly they were resonating with the audience. I was rooting for Hailey Mia above anyone else but its unfair for people to say GNT didn't deserve their win.

If you saw any of the judges reactions to any of her performances, they were speechless most the time, as much as I love GNT wendy should've won she's probably one of the greatest vocalists I've ever heard. Also Hailey Mia definitely worth checking out she's 14 and amazing she came 4th

I loved both through the season. I saw a lot of people mention that they felt Wendy failed to connect with some of her songs. For some people you can have a great voice but you also need to be able to connect. I think that is where GNT won. They had great vocals (I believe Wendy is stronger) and they also were able to connect with their song choices.

As someone who watched every single episode (and replayed many performances over and over) but Girl Named Tom is much more relevant. They charted in the top 10 4 separate times. Wendys voice is insane but the genre she is in feels more like a cover act than someone who will make a name for herself as a solo artist. Thats why they won.

I think there's a differense in being a really good technical singer like Wendy and being a really good artist. I think Hailey Mia will be the artist that will have the best career of this years The Voice. She was the one that clearly improved the most during the season, and I think she "connected" better to her songs than the other in the show, especially when it came to the live part of the season. When I heard the songs from the finale I even thought she would win - her second song I thought would make it clear to all that she was the winner. (Katie Rae and Bella was my favorites from the beginning - they had a really great battle, but I don't understand what happend with them after that.)

A couple things have to be factored in. Both these artists did 2 songs in the finale. This video shows the strongest of the two songs that Wendy did, and the weaker of the two songs that Girl Named Tom did. And, maybe more importantly, Girl Named Tom didn't really have anyone to compete against, whereas Wendy was essentially competing against 3 other powerhouse singers. Anyone who likes folky, acoustic pop stuff would vote for Girl Named Tom, but those who like larger than life vocals would be divided among 4 different singers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’ve had many favorites on The Voice, most of whom did not win or even come close. That does NOT mean the show is rigged. All it means is that more viewers, for one reason or another, voted for artists that I did not. In this particular case, yes, Wendy could sing circles around Girl Named Tom, I won’t argue that, BUT Girl Named Tom is more captivating; that’s why I, and others, voted for them over Wendy. And, unless NBC is collaborating with iTunes, ignoring the fact that GNT’s songs charted so highly, especially when no bonus was at stake, says a lot and it’s folly to ignore that simply because you* like another artist more. On a related note, I’ve never understood the “duos/trios have inherent advantages” argument. Just look up how many of them get eliminated before live shows (specifically at Andi & Alex) before talking about the advantages they supposedly have. I’m not a fan of the “people with industry experience shouldn’t be allowed” argument either but that will be a bit off topic. A blog I read put it perfectly: Wendy is technically perfect but it’s like she’s detached from the songs she’s singing. I’ll go a step further and say that you could hook up an iPod on the stage and set it to play the studio recording and there would be the same amount of emotion. Again, Wendy is very good, I just don’t need to listen to her multiple times; there’s just more feeling in a GNT performance and that keeps me wanting more of them. I’m not always happy with the results either but attempting to invalidate that result just because you* don’t like it is not, and never will be, ok. I’ve been baffled by some artists that America keeps around over some others. I constantly plead with America to “make the right choice” (here meaning “MY choice”) and there’s even one season that I would have once gone so far as to cry foul but I’ve long since made my peace with that outcome. You* aren’t the only person that watches this show (and others like it) and sometimes you* will be in the minority. Maybe the title of this show is a bit of a misnomer. None of these things make it rigged, that’s just how voting works. *referring to people in general, not anyone specifically

I know it's called "the voice" but I think they should focus more on the emotional impact of the songs instead of focusing on how high/loud someone can sing or how many adlibs they can do

Wendy lost cause she never really connected with the people, it's not just about vocals. If the people don't like her then there is no point in her winning🤷🏽‍♀️

I watched the whole season and LOVED Wendy, but I also voted for Girl Named Tom over her. If it was just down to vocal technicality, she was the winner hands-down, but GNT had the emotion and the artistry. I wouldn't listen to Wendy's music outside of the show, but I'm definitely going to pay attention to what GNT does next.

Whoever anyone likes aside, the artists that had the most Top 10 iTunes hits was a Girl Named Tom and the artist with the second most was Wendy Moten. Results, therefore, were pretty spot on.

Its unfair that several articles are saying Wendy was robbed, it discredits GNT journey throughout the show. The moment they sang on blinds, battles, their main sell points is their harmony, thats how theyve gotten into the show and as the show progrsses Kelly guided them to showcase their voice individual and mix it with their tight harmonies and that was great feat already, so much growth. Im notorious with groups joining the voice but GNT is literally the best trio/group that came on the show, they showed versatility, artistry, emotion, and thats a winning material. The voice is not just about who has the widest vocal range, its also about artistry, emotion, stage presence and a lot more, Id say GNT checks more boxes in these than wendy. Also, there is no doubt Wendy has the highest vocal range out of all the artists in the season but thats it, Jershika hasnt had the perfect voice but damn every time she performs, she moves the audience thats why she won instant save twice. GNT showed a lot of connection with the people and Wendy felt short on that, shes stagnant at stage and shows little emotion and looks like she wasnt feeling the song. Also, I quoted her own coach blake said on semis befote she sang, "youve played it safe until now". Imagine performing 3 dolly parton songs, it very much show, she only sings whats shes comfortable with. Give GNT the credit they most definitely deserved.

The coaches talked her up too much - the coaches often say certain people are the guaranteed winner, and then the public vote skews the competition.

Wendy has the most incredible voice! I loved watching and listening to her every week. She truely has an amazing gift.

The Voice is not just about vocal, not just super high voice, super powerful voice will win. It seek of the artistry, the potential, the emotional connection. So so much winner of The Voice is not have a high/powerful voice, and I love love them, lile Chloe Kohanski or Mealyn Jarmon.

More audience members voted for GNT which is why they won. Their songs consistently charted. For everyone who is saying it was rigged, did you consistently vote for Wendy? Folks always quick to call something rigged. Then folks will say it isn’t fair because they are a group yet a group has never made it this far before so I don’t think it’s an advantage. At the end of the day it’s a popularity contest just like any show that relies on audience votes.

I said from the beginning that a girl named Tom should win, all three are very talented, I have to say I’m glad that a group won, hopefully this will become the norm!

A lot of the songs later in the season were more so challenges they chose for the voice. But their better performances fit more into their sound. I recommend watching their first three performances, which are pretty much flawless.

Yes, it is rigged. This came out two or three years ago when a contestant contract was released on the internet. The show tried to deny it, but it has been confirmed by prior contestants and the show has not sued anyone for slander or libel. That in itself tells you what you need to know.

Wendy is fantastic BUT… she already has music industry connections… when the rest do not. i stopped watching because of the cassidy pope issue. so i feel like if people are more people involved vs. someone with connection is a problem. she deserves a record deal but the point of the voice is to create connections you didn’t have.

GNT won when they sang Wichita Lineman. People forget that the voice is also a popularity contest. Wendy was great, but GNT was a humble family trio with amazing harmonies. Their story also sells, and it's what made people vote for them. Btw, the whole season was amazing.

Honestly there was soooo much amazing talent this year that, it was hard seeing people get eliminated.

I've never watched this show, but based on those two performances I agree with you completely. Out of these two, Wendy should've won by a land slide. Also, I loved you saying people approaching 30 are not to old for singing lessons. I'm 28 and have definitely felt that way at times lol

The Girl in Girl Named Tom just has some insane star quality that you either have or you don't, plus she's cute and gorgeous. I do think her voice if she competed solo would also have brought her really far in the competition as well so yea...ot answer your question it is a popularity contest. The voice is more of a star search than a voice search bc if it were all about the best voice alone Wendy wins.

Haven’t watched the show at all-watching this recap, I’m all “okay the first band is alright” Then Wendy starts singing and I am 1) glued to the screen and 2) chills on chills on chills. She was robbed. I’ll buy her album when it comes out.

O.K. I think it's the public who vote. Yea... Wendy has some serious pipes! Personally, I LOVED her take on Arethas 'Ain't No Way". But... it got a little screechy song after song. I think the backstory is a factor. Wendy has had a professional career singing. She just wants to be out front now. GNT, however, are trying to start a career, and the story of their name is great! Their harmonies... I could listen all day. Wendy, while great, I could not. 🤷‍♀️

It all comes down to who gets more votes. The best vocalist won't necessarily win if the viewers connect more with another artist.

There was a duo in the very first season of The Voice (Elenowen). And there have been others since then. It’s rare, but it’s always been allowed.

Watched them from lives to finals. Wendy never made me feel anything gutting. GNT was able to pluck the butterflies in my stomach. Thats something.

It's clear to everyone that Wendy had stellar and breathtaking vocals that she's worked on for so much of her life, that's nothing to argue about. My issue with Wendy throughout the whole show was that she has already made so many connections and even got on the charts at one point in her life. She couldn't stop bragging about the people she's worked with since the first episode, and to me that's unfair to the other contestants. The point of the show is to find amazing singers out of the woodworks who haven't gotten their chance in the industry yet, and she doesn't qualify for that at all. Heck, she already had her own Wikipedia page. And for good reason of course, she's an amazing singer, but it doesn't seem like she belongs on the show. Also, The Voice is based not only on the singing ability but the personality and likability of the singer(s). Wendy's personality, in my opinion, was stale, dull, and honestly cocky at times. I didn't like her from the blind auditions because of that. GNT were much more down to earth, and their performances showed that too. They connected so much more with the audience and it makes for a very interesting and unique performance, which Wendy lacked for me. And again, don't get me wrong, she is a FANTASTIC vocalist, but just didn't check all the boxes to get the votes.

Here's a list of my favourite performances even though no one cares haha 😂 Girl Named Tom- Wichita Lineman (the most beautiful thing I've heard in my entire life, no joke), Creep, Dust In The Wind, Helplessly Hoping Hailey Mia- Arcade, Jar of Hearts, Elastic Heart Samuel Harness- Bruises, Before You Go Libianca- everything I wanted Katie Rae + Bella Denapoli battle- No More Tears (Enough is Enough) Personal opinions on S21: I think GNT deserved the win, just because singers like Wendy who can sing insane clear high notes doesn't mean that they will always win. In the end, people are always going to vote for the singers whose performance they connect to the most, for me I don't feel any emotional connection to Wendy when she sings. (Maybe it's a personal preference, don't bash me) I'd be honest, I didn't even like GNT at first but that Wichita Lineman performance won me over. To quote what Blake said, "the way they layered the harmonies made it seem like it was one seamless vocal event", that is the performance that tugged at my heartstrings. (I also noticed that he gave a "well played" smile during that performance as if he already predicted that GNT will win). Some people say that three voices against one is unfair, I would agree to disagree. You should see GNT's Instagram post where they showed a short clip about their rehearsals, they had to match the vowels and vibrato length and much more, if one person screws up, then the performance would be ruined. Be it a group or an individual, it depends how you use that to your advantage I guess. And GNT is so likeable, it's sad to see the hate they're getting after the win. Also didn't like how Ariana gave Vaughn such a shitty song choice and picked a generic white girl with a mediocre tone over an obviously more talented Asian who sings with so much passion. And my last complaint is that I'm freaking obsessed with Samuel Harness. John should've saved him over Shadale. Quite devastated that we didn't get to hear more of him. Dude is just so cool and has so much character.

Yes this is a vocal competition but at the end of the day their is something called an opinion, in s13 Chloe won yet she was FAR from the best in the finale . Brooke destroyed her vocally yet Chloe won. Chloe was still deserving, it all comes down to preference at the end of the day and if it was really rigged may someone explain how girl named Tom managed to have 4 of their studio recordings of their voice performances in the top 10 on iTunes one of which was number 1 two weeks in a row beating out Adele and other big artists , their win should not have come as a surprise.

Tho Wendy declined in the lives , her live playoffs was not at its best and she even was flat In the performance of I will always love you , her top 13 ,top11, and top 10 performances were all underwhelming. Her only 2 amazing live performances IMO are her finale performance and her semis performance but to a lesser extent. Wendy showed up too late (if that makes sense) while GNT were already charting In the top 10 on iTunes from the top 13 . So Wendy left her live performance mark too late in competition in comparison to GNT aka Girl named Tom .

Just to be clear the stream factor was not applicable this season, so clearly GNT won coz they got more votes than Wendy and other finalists. So I guess that was a fair decision that they won. Stop arguing on that people. It was America's decision to make them winner so they won and yeah THEY DESERVES IT TOO AND EQUALLY WENDY AS WELL. but only one can be the winner

You should watch the river or dust in the wind performance by girl named Tom! Thing is you watched their “fun” song of the finale. And then that one was the balad song from Wendy, she also did a “fun” song besides that one. That’s the whole thing about the finale. But yeah, to actually judge girl named Tom’s vocals individually you definitely should watch river. And it was only them and one of them playing the piano, that’s it. Loved that performance, their voices and vocals. Hauntingly beautiful

I understand how people think Wendy was the best vocalist but she lacked so many other areas such as actual performance, and audience appeal. Sometimes it felt like she stood in one spot and screamed honestly.

As someone who participated this year on the show, the live shows are mainly based on America’s votes. So it isn’t like the judges decision. Also I know both these acts really well and I am so happy for both of them, both of them are going to see a bunch of success post show.
