I have a 1978 Colorado Beige 300D that has always been garage kept and this car today has 45k on it and looks, smells and drives like brand new. My father bought that car brand new at Phil Smart Mercedes in Seattle and that car was his pride and joy. He passed away in 1985 and I have kept this car as he would have wanted. It really is one fine automobile!

It does become an emotional bond keeping everything on a 400K w123 working. Running, no issue as a daily driver. It seems like I’ve worked on everything except an engine rebuild. SLS twice. Next, get the A/C going again

W123 will remain then most definitely one of the iconic cars ever built in the history 240d and 300D

Collectable cars aside. That w123 if taken care of will outlast several brand new cars bought today. I bought a 1980 cd and have been sorting out the neglected parts. At my age I don't expect to be needing to buy another car. So yes, it's worth $100,000.00 to me since I will never sell it.

Thanks for the nice comments. 4 months ago I rebuild my engine on my S123 /1982 of 440k. I did the work myself, and I am not a mechanic. The valve guides and valves are VERY hard to find. They came from Norway, Egypt, USA and Germany. Parts alone cost me AUD$4k. Now it feels like a new car. I know that it was a good investment, compared with very new models.

Love my reliable 1979 240D with 524k miles. Used as my daily driver, it’s always a pleasure drive, puts a smile on my face and safely gets me to where I need to go. Properly maintained, I feel it could outlast any new $50k car. I enjoy and appreciate your channel in helping to preserve these incredible automobiles. Let’s keep them alive and on the road. 👍

Buy a new Mercedes E Class for $100k today, in 8 years it is ready for recycling, and not worth $5000. The W123 at $25000, will still be working an operating with £2500 of maintenance every year, and in 8 years will probably be worth $35000.

Instead of fetish, I would call it Hype. People nowadays hype anything they lay their eyes on. They over appreciate and this trend continues to follow. Right when they notice its becoming expensive, only then its more important to them rather than the car itself.

Had an audi 5000 5 speed for 17 years on the road. Have a w123 turbo diesel now for 7 years. Runs great. Rebuilt the injectors. It's on its 4th car cover. Poor car doesn't get a garage. Thanks for the video and the insight. I'll keep mine as long as I can. It's fun passing cars on the expressway

W123 were taxis all over Europe. Accountant or middle management daily drivers. Why would anyone value a mass produced taxi at $100k? If it happens, it says more about the debasement of the currency than the value of a W123. Basically, if a W123 is ever worth 100k, it will be at the same time as a Gullwing is worth $50m.

My 240D is not for sale, nor is it worth $100k, but I've never seen another W123 sedan or coupe in U.S. trim with optional factory rear seat headrests like mine. When you look at the classic muscle car market, they go out of their way to advertise rarity (One of Twelve cars ever built on a Tuesday with the racing stripe, bucket seats, 429 V8, and in Light Blue).

Unofficially mine for sale, I'm really a VW guy and got this creampuff from a customer. I learned about them, had some fun , but it's time to find somebody that's enthusiastic about them like I am with VW's. I can sit there and open and close the door all day that sounds so good😂

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I have given up on the idea of a W123, I instead decided that the BMW motorcycle of the late seventies is the classic for me, and when I can't hold it upright I'll get a sidecar. But I still enjoy your insights, thank you!

The moment you start to drive that low mileage expensive w123 or w116 diesel, REGULARLY, you will see how fast everything starts to breakdown. Seats will deteriorate, engine oil leaks will become more and more pronounced, AC will go out and new vacuum leaks are going to drive you nuts. Ask how I know. I bought a clean low mileage w116 300sd 5 for $3,000 5 years ago. Was hardly driven by the original owner. Zero engine oil leaks, seats were clean as you can imagine, AC and heat worked and no vacuum leaks. I'm so glad I didn't pay $100k. 5 years later, can't stop the engine oil leaks, AC and Heat don't work, seats have sunburn marks, and now have to deal with new vacuum leaks and window regulator issues. I still enjoy driving my w116 almost everyday. Now if you buy a $100k dollar w123 MB Classic, and you garage it and never drive it, NO COMMENT. But you know what I'm thinking, CENSORED, CENSORED, CENSORED.

Kind of thinking of selling the one that I got last year, i got it as a whim and to get the experience of a mercedes. I Guess you can say I had my fun, but im a vw guy at heart and what i can hope for is a new owner that's into it like i am wirh the vws. Nice car too, 80 240d manual with 147k.

Bought 2 reasonably cheap. One has a blown waterpump. Previous mechanic person over tightened hex bolt on flywheel to prevent its removal. Needs to come off to replace waterpump. Other one in good condition. Except window engine removed by previous owner. Allso underbonnet sound deadening foam held moisture causing bonnet to rust through from underneath. Looks newish even though old. Might buy another for spares one day if i am lucky. Waterpump for them is made in Italy.

At least for Mercedes Motoring, it is. They had a super low millage euro green on green wagon and the asking price was over a 100K. Sure, It was one of a kind, perfect and had a rather interesting story, but is not uncommon to see nicely kept examples with low miles are go for 60 to 70K. Prices have gone up and eventually, the best examples will hit 100K.
@TheLuisg92

But yeah, I totally agree that snobs would never consider buying a warrior and bring it up to the condition it deserves. They just want to know about the best of the best and that means that more often than not, those snobs end up overpaying for cars that aren’t that great or they buy a car that is great, and then take it to a shop to be restored, fully restored.

First one had diode attached to distributor. Believe diode was faulty. Car would not restart if engine had been running unless i let it cool for 1 or 1 and a half hours. Made life annoying if wanting to fuel it up.

I've owned three 123's. My brother has owned one and I have several uncles and cousins who have owned many examples. My initial thoughts on the concept of a hundred grand 123 is batshit crazy. But I guess as time goes on, vehicles become less and less affordable and more stupidly and unnecessarily complex there probably will be some people out there with that kind of money who would pay that much for one. I'll never be that rich so it's a moot point to me.

I had a w202, 220D 1996, Watch out the injection pump, It is not bosch built, its a french thing that will fail every 80000km or so, just don't buy the 2.2L Diesel. They are also keen to rust, more over the electronics onboard are getting old and devices are failling, my instrument cluster stayed off when outside temperature were too hot: no speed needle, no rpm needle, no fuel needle... I walked away this car and bought a w123 :) Oh I'm in france bye the way so was a french market car.
