@kANGaming and I check out the new Railroads Online update on the beta branch! Your results my vary.... Merch: hyce.creator-s... Join my discord: / discord Become an ES&D Train Crew Member and get extra perks! / @hyce777
I trust Hyce knows this, but for the viewers: It’s not being a lantern details stickler when those details could severely burn you if you got them wrong! If you used one of those barn lanterns for railroad service, you would absolutely spill fuel, and in cold weather you’d be likely to LITERALLY EXPLODE THE GLASS. No joke. Look up Corning Nonex glass, and consider the problem it was designed to solve! With sight alterations, it went on to become the incredibly common Pyrex cookware glass. Railroads had good reason to have their own lantern designs, and this game can EASILY do much better than a cheap, bought-off-some-asset-store generic lantern.
I have an old railway oil lantern and it burn my hands if its inside or there isn’t a breeze to cool it down , even if I hold the handle. Moral of the story, don’t use oil lanterns without gloves.
(Pretext, I'm being completely cynical here for humor's sake.) HOW DARE YOU NITPICK RAILROADS ONLINE!!!! We all know that Railroads Online is only the most truest and authentic historical American Narrow Gauge simulation out there. That's why you can lock your drive wheels when braking with no consequences, rerailing trains back in the day was literal mind over matter, stacking flat cars 6 high was THE ideal method of transporting locomotives, trees embedded into ground work ALWAYS yeeted into the stratosphere and turned 2D, everything ran on wood until a later update, coal was less efficient than wood (my Class 70 will consume less wood than the Tweetsie does coal when they're double heading together. I'll come back to refuel both and the Tweetsie is usually around 37~43% while the Class 70 is sitting at 40~55% fuel,) and you used whatever was conveniently lying around as your coal scoop....even a teaspoon. But in all seriousness, it doesn't surprise me that Kyumei got yet another thing wrong in the game. It's almost like he's working off of old American Western stereotypes rather than actually doing dutiful research on the subject.
@@steeljawX I feel like these details are not important in this stage of development, you can put in a better lamp model at any point in the future. It seems to me that Kyumei is just adding the basic stuff he wants in the game and skips all the bugs so that after he has everything in he can fix all the bugs at once rather than trying to fix 20 new buggs just because he added one new model of a loco (or at least I hope its like that lol). I feel like people are bit too unreasonably hard on kyumei, everyone loves this game and everyone wants it perfect immediately (including me) but I feel like some people just dont realize that thats not possible. All the stuff people are complaining about with the accuracy of models and other such things.... all of that is easily fixable down the line when all the major parts of the game are actually in and once all the major buggs are fixed.
I used to be really into collecting lanterns... less serious about it now, but yeah- that lantern is just plain... not the right design. From what I remember, the earliest lanterns were pretty fragile things- there was a base, a globe, and a chimney, but the globe itself was a structural component. I don't remember when those began, but I think they were using them into the 1870s and 1880s? Eventually they developed designs that were much more robust. Thick glass, A sturdy metal cage surrounding the whole thing (so you were less likely to smash your lantern to pieces while trying to use it), Squat profile with a somewhat wide base to help avoid the likelihood of being tipped over. Baffles to reduce fuel sloshing in the tank, and the tank is raised above the ground, rather than being used as the base of the lantern. All this said, there are always exceptions- the Boston Elevated Railway, a streetcar and rapid transit operator for the city of Boston MA, used ordinary Dietz 'Monarch' lanterns- that said, I think their use was mainly as marker lanterns for MoW equipment.
@@leverettrailfan5414 You’re right about street railway companies using non-railroad style lanterns on maintenance operations. I have two Philadelphia Transportation Co lanterns that match that description, but also have quite large fuel tanks. I can’t confirm this, but my understanding is they were used essentially as road flares or lighted traffic cones at track or overhead wire repair sites.
I wish, I really wish just one of these times, when Hyce is doing something that LOOKS like it should cause a de-rail, but doesn't, that the editor would play Smells like Kenosha anyways, and then just record-scratch it when he doesn't de-rail
The night/day cycle looks really nice~ Guess it's time to do the "RO Horror episode" and wander the forest at night trying to find your train after falling off? >:3
This update is seriously great. Unfortunately my textures are broken BUT I just play at night. I played it before knowing the speed limits were raised so I almost had a heart attack when I saw a hair pin curve I forgot about in a lightning flash. Grabbed the brakes and had no idea how I survived. R.O. Would def be a horror game if they still derailed easily.
A tale as old as time, Night shift braves a thunderstorm in the pitch black to set a new record for delivery and Day shift is just tossing cars into the dirt.
The next thing the devs should 100% work on is the render distance for the trains, add in some proper LOD models so that the trains don’t just pop into existence and you’re golden.
Regarding the MoW train: Four flat cars, one box car, and a waycar or several for the bunks. Box car for tools, and as for the flats, two of them should be loaded with rails, and the other two with beams to represent replacement rails and ties.
Yes, there is a valve you turn in the cab to turn on the dynamo in the Tweetsie. If you go into the UI and then exit, turn left and look at the “attempt” of a hydrostatic lubricator, it is on there. The valve for the compressor is forward (front of the cab) along that line as well. Also, my hopper 404 I labeled “ERROR” instead of my railroad’s actual name. I went to re-rail it once and it dropped it onto an end of track device… it looked like a wreck, so I isolated it and turned it into a monument. Complete random chance it was my 404 hopper, but perfect. And still, boxcars are borked for me if I load them at all, they are still acting like they’re running over something at random and coming to an instant stop. Thankfully, the new stock cars are working fine and also carry 32 tools, they’re just heavier-which makes sense as they’re so much bigger and use thicker beans in the construction than the smaller, thin-walked boxcar-but they shouldn’t be THAT much heavier… But there is no justification for the “Coffin” to be that much heavier and three times the volume over the original tank car but carry less oil. Keume either needs to swap the load carried values of the original and new coffin tank cars or make the current longest car (the coffin) in game to be a shorter than the regular tank car model (change the appearance completely to reflect that has a smaller tank volume).
it felt really good to watch you let it go down the hill and instead of RRO-isms, it actually went in the dirt somewhat like youd expect it to. kinda annoying that the locos no appear to be magnetized cuz being able to go 150mph downhill with a tailwind in a less productive way is part of the fun. but hey its whatever
...I love this update, there are most definitely bugs still, like the tenmile and some other locos jumping off the track when entering the ui, the ui enter area being shrunk on some locos, but I can and will say these 2 points, 1 joking 1 not, the weather transition time is a perfect representation of weather in the midwest (except I've never seen a dust storm here), and the player cap has been improved! That was a fun stream
The quality of life improvements, mainly being the car speed limits being increased/removed, have really made this game fun again. I think they panicked a little when the coal update kinda flopped and realized that they had to actually improve the game itself.
You could set the night time to like 10 mins and day time to 40 or 50, so we get a bit of the scary running through void feels and a lot of woah look at the nice weather^^
I think now that there's weather and visibility you guys should enforce the use of a caboose/waycar with the class lamps on the rear so you can verify end of train location in the poor weather
I had an absolute blast watching you guys play with the update and just having a blast with it. I'm still waiting till it's out on main branch and hope my gaming laptop will be up to the task (should be fine) but now I can finally take the Tweetsie and Ruby Basin and actually use them for their intended double heading purpose. Power and speed which will make the coal run feel so much shorter now. Btw rolling resistance has been increased so keep that in mind with future dutch drops.
So kAN mentioned something about flaming coal trains, so here's a story I read on the Harton Electric Railway that existed in Newcastle, England. For context, the Harton had small tunnels and low clearance bridges to reduce construction costs, as would be expected for an industrial colliery railway, and as such the overhead wire was in close proximity to the train as it dived under Harton's streets. The system employed the standard BR 21t and 24.5t steel hoppers towards the end of its life (being larger than the locomotives themselves!), however the higher load levels on these larger, more modern wagons meant that if it was overfilled you ran the risk of the coal touching the wire. This resulted in spectacular fires on damp or drizzly days as the 600V (I think) line arced to the wagon body via the damp coal, often setting it alight!
Personally I am waiting for the locomotives to handle more like real steam engines, but like the update it all the same. I do think the light is a bit too yellow (especially if early electric incandescent). I know whale oil and kerosene produce a fairly yellow light, you can still make out colors better than in game.
I believe there’s a story where mine worker’s was getting really upset with the mine company (who knew). They ended rioting, setting a mine car full of coal on fire and sending it back into the mine. This is what caused the largest underground fire. Someone can face check this but I like the story..
That is ABSOLUTELY the difference of night shift vs day shift. Competent employees tend to stay away from the majority of management. Ones that follow orders as they're given and no further tend to work days.
That whole opening segment about night time operations reminded me a lot about the Dave Goulder song Black Five. He’s a British musician who made lots of very good railway songs.
Know what would be cool, and someone should suggest as it would be easy to implement? Customizable day night cycles, so you could have day, sunset, sunrise, repeat, and just skip the night. Gives the cool feeling of shifting time, without the issue of actual pitch blackness.
Hyce I totally feel you on remembering convex vs concave, I never could remember it myself until I discovered that concave makes a cave, and convex likes to 💪 (flex). I hope this is some help for you to!
Love the concerns about losing a car but not running a caboose with one of you in it😅..Also It seems speed limits have been made more stable, and the developer tools have been left on if you guys want to do some “off camera railroading”
general rule of thumb for te expansion of steel is .001 in. per 1in of steel thickness/length per 100 degrees of temp change. so say a boiler that's 60in long would expand .060 (1/16 in) once its 100 degrees warmer, 200 degrees warmer would be .120in (1/8 in) and so forth.
Hyce, you know how kAN made the switch back? You can remake the roller coaster from the ES&D! And you might reach 70 mph. Also free money is free money. Take advantage while you can, it won’t be there forever. I don’t mind, because I would do the same.
I think your choo-choos are due for an LED upgrade. Get some nice warm white ones for the incandescent look and make sure they are nice and bright (LEDs are many many times brighter watt for watt)
Watching this and @Hyce's reaction when those hoppers tumbled from the bridge... priceless. Almost as good as his Seven Cars in The Dirt reaction! And yeah, this update looks awesome, I just need to come back from my trip to Japan and start planning for a PC that can run this when it migrates to main branch. I don't think my laptop will be able to keep up with this forever. Also confirmed: barrel roll joke in RO is a thing.🤣
Well with the link and pin coupling, there was the `Bishop's Knife'. Looks like an 6" frosting paddle, but with a 1.25" diameter knotch cut out of the side about 4.5" from the handle. From what I've heard, not many were used. The one I have in my collection has no rust, dents or bends, so I don't think it saw any time in the field...
I had a stutter issues with OBS as well because of this new update. One way I fixed it was instead of doing a display capture or some different capture, Do a game capture and it should fix it and do it at 1080P. Regardless of what your Recording settings are at. This is what worked for me!
This update looks great, but there’s still kinks that need to be ironed out, which is why I’m very glad this is on the beta branch so they can find the bugs and fix them in the full update. It seems RRO is in its redemption arc? Maybe?
Tried the Beta myself. I found the lanterns on the Caboose and waycars only visible 3 cars away. The super mag rails is hilarious particularly if you get knocked off by misplaced tree. I had to hut and chase a racing Ruby. Though the visuals is amazing and scary fun!
"In the mid-1980s, Quest Diagnostics began performing employer drug tests, and shortly thereafter released the first Drug Testing Index (DTI), which examined positivity rates to provide a comprehensive analysis of drug-use trends. The first DTI was published in January 1988 and highlighted a drug test positivity rate of 13.6%. That same year, Congress passed both the Drug-Free Workplace Act and the Anti-Drug Abuse Act in response a mounting number of drug and alcohol related accidents, and one fatal train accident in particular in which the train’s operator tested positive for marijuana. The new federally-mandated drug testing guidelines, a growing network of testing providers, and new data from sources like the DTI started a trend towards testing among private sector employers."
So, a trick some pilots do when they have to preserve their night vision (say they need to turn on a bright flashlight on preflight or something) is to close one eye. When firing a locomotive at night, maybe close one eye while looking into the firebox?
I had the roll-over happen at 37 mph coming down a 4% with 60mR curve at night, 12 empty stakes and a bobber... it was a disaster for sure. Make a line that bypasses the hole the smelter sits in entirely, that will benefit the road greatly.
There are stories where firemen, working hard on a steam engine that's working to make up lost time and the fireman accidently shoved some of the fire back into the tender or bunker, setting the loco's coal on fire. Plus, there are stories of engines spewing sparks due to slack coal and setting cars on fire. It's so common it's not funny. As for the day/night cycle and the weather cycle, it's good for bringing up ghost stories and making references, such as that of the Dread 107, or the Marshal Pass Ghost train. Something that makes the railroad you build a lot more real and interesting. As for the weather, despite not having the best computer, I noticed the weather affected some engines worse than the others. I noticed the smaller engines like Montezuma and even the Mason Bogie hate the cold and wet weather like the blizzard and the rail and seem to struggle more than normal. as for money printing, try playing games with a bank and using that money. trust me, in games such as TpF2, TPH, MTAP, MTAS, LDC, LC or even C:S, you'll be in the money soon enough. Even ATS will help and if you and kAN set up a sort of communal bank with whoever else you bring in, you guys could literally get everything you need (as long as you have RROx and use the money "cheat" to put the money into your bank in game) As for the Speed Limits, I'd recommend keeping your hand on the brake at all times. You never know when those cars are gonna show you who's boss. Also, the cars now have rolling friction and a variable momentum based on how full they are. So....be on your guard. Also, Drug tests came into effect in 1986.
Nice video for the new update for RRO keep up the good work Hyce, and Keep up the good work on editing MickelyMc As always Love the content and seeing the Kenosha's when they happen
I have found the limit for speed. A 50m radius curve is not ideal taken at speeds greater than about 20mph. Took it well to spicy, somehow lost an EBT hopper and derailed all but 2 of my EBT hoppers (5 original and 10 EBT) became 5 & 9. One EBT got thrown 50+ metres from the track through trees. In regards to the daylight factor, 48:02 , I run my daylight cycle based off an hours gameplay. So normally set to 36:24 (day:night) but for recording purposes, 48:12 should do nicely or an even 40:20
Here's an idea I'd really like to see. CRAP car throwing contest. You and kan pick an engine, and put a car behind it. Make a line of straight track, and the tightest curve imaginable at the end. Since the trains have the lionel magnet track function now, if you full send on the curve, you yeet your car, and the one who throws it farthest wins.
I just watched the 1964 film "The Train" starring Burt Lancaster for the first time a few days ago. Definitely one of the most underrated black and white movies out there. I would highly recommend watching it! 👍
Ok, so the “spawning goods as the host” bit is a cheatsy thing to do at the freight depot, BUT imagine running a train to the logging camp. You can dramatically cut the time you spend there loading by using the crane on two cars and having the host load the other cars simultaneously. The only thing keeping me from saying to do the same at the other industries is the fact that the stockpiles won’t drop. But the logging camp has infinite stockpile so there’s no ethical dilemmas there!
They should I had some random monster that just lurks out in the woods like Bigfoot or something for when you inevitably fall off the train, lose the train, get lost and then you can get jump scared.
I’m not sure about coal trains on fire, but I know bunker fires were a thing on ships. It’s most likely what happened to the USS Maine is there was a smoldering bunker fire that heated up the adjacent magazine and blew the ship sky high in Havana harbor.
Dang it, Hyce. Now I really need to go to the Colorado Railroad Museum, have you give me a little more in depth tour so I can check out these link and pins, possibly pin a link in (not couple two cars together, but just put a pin a link in, ) just so I can unironically sing Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone". YOU said that the area between cars where you held the link was considered "the danger zone." I have to try pinning in a link just so I can sing "I went to the DANGER ZONE!" and mean it. HYYYYYYCE!!!!!!!!
17:35 kAN asks "are you ready?" and Smells Like Kenosha starts playing immediately. 21:00 Huh, a tactical binning. Pretty sure you still have to pee in cup for that, though. 32:08 Yeah, me neither; Smells Like Kenosha is playing again...
There should have been a Wilhelm scream when KAN flew off the track with the coal car at 33:00. Also man I want this game but I’m on a Mac book air so I cannot run this game
The 1987 crash was one of the factors that led to Congress passing the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. This created required drug and alcohol testing programs for Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated employers.
