Console upgrade hesitancy is very real, especially this generation. I picked a last-gen Xbox over the current-gen options and here is what I found.

Having 4K AND HDR makes the One X still a wonderful option for computer games in 2023. If you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, you have a regular supply of games to enjoy, with more being added every month. And even if you're not bothered about gaming specifically, at the very least, the One X is a capable 4K Blu-Ray Player, with support for alot of on-demand services too. It is a rock-solid multimedia device in all.

Hey thank you for your comment! I think the main motivation to upgrade would be current-gen exclusive games and cheaper storage alternatives. Also if more games have 60/120fps. As the Xbox One X already supports 4k and hdr, those two things don't warrant an upgrade.

Red Dead & Hitman were the first games I played on my XSX. Seeing Red Dead in native 4k was a game changer. Plus Hitman 3 on XSX is at a razor sharp 4k as well.

Oh boy Red Dead truly is next level! But there you go, the XSX version is literally identical to the XOX version, so you can imagine how it feels to get that experience on a £100 console :) Hitman is a stunner for sure. Be sure to check out Atomic Heart if you haven't already. The opening sequence is jaw dropping!

I prefer a resolution compromise but a 60fps gameplay. I have more fun on PS4 games on the PS5 than native 4k30 PS5 games.

I had a One X briefly around 2021 and loved it. Games looked amazing on it, and it ran quiet and actually looked aesthetically pleasing (unlike current gen consoles imo). Hardware-wise it blew away the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and I do love me some Playstation. Seeing Doom Eternal running at 4K with HDR was incredible. I also enjoyed playing classic games on it which were enhanced with 4K resolution and other improvements. Splinter Cell and Banjo Kazooie were a joy. I've since sold it, but I'm now considering getting a Series X for Starfield. It's my most anticipated game coming out in the near future and I feel like it'd be worth getting back into the Xbox ecosystem. Sure, I could play it on my gaming laptop, but there's no way in hell I could run it at 4K with those visuals. Anyway, that's my life story. Great video!

Yeah, it's definitely worth getting one as a secondary console to go alongside the Series X. In my house, I have a Series X in one room and the One X in another room and use them interchangeably. The One X has a 4K Blu-Ray player and plus you can use network transfer to transfer games from one console to the other.

@@ThePalePatriot Yeah, they are a little bit darker because of Dolby Vision for gaming. You can turn it off in settings or just turn up the in-game brightness.

I'm glad your enjoying the one x. I upgraded my son's one X to a series s and yes the graphics take a hit but the having the load times and frame rate on the series s made it a huge upgrade for him. I think for the price the one X is awesome deal for sure

I loved your review! I exchanged a Switch Lite for an Xbox one X, was hitting up after a few hours so i got into the task of replacing the thermal paste and it's as good as new now, installed Halo Infinite on an external SSD since is the game i play the most. I love this console.

I loved my One X. Resolution jump was massive, all enhanced games looked stunning. The console was small, but powerfull and at the same time whisper quiet. But I got Series X on release and I don't think I would be able to go back to One X. Loading times and framerate were even more impressive than resolution bump in One X. And Quick Resume is a game changer.

The One X is a beautiful machine. Re2 remake, red dead 2, battlefront 2, all beautiful and stunning games with stellar performance on it, but for newer games like Elden Ring, it really pushes the console

This video convinced me to get an xbox one x. Have out of the gaming space for while so this a great entry point to a great back catalog without the expense of a series x. Later one a pro or slim version come out i might snag a series x for cheaper price down the line. Thanks again for the vid.

Bought a One X off eBay a few weeks ago from a seller I use frequently. Was basically brand new -- anywho , Love love love it! I already had a Series S but few games would play at 1440p 60fps, so I said I'll go full 4k, 30s and be able to buy discs. =) Now I do realize many would wonder "why not buy a Series X instead, its new!?" Well its simple I got this One X and several games + game pass for $200 -- and the only Series X console I could find in my area was the bundle so it was close to $600 before tax. So figured why not. =) Thanks for the video!

Great video & instant sub! I still have my Xbox one X with an external 2TB SSD with many installed 360 games, it’s actually my legacy machine since Sony turned their back on their PS3 generation. One X plays actually Halo infinite better Series S likely due to early optimisation. Until Microsoft have better exclusives I don’t see a reason to upgrade so for now the One X sits nicely alongside my PS5.

I genuinely agree with everything you've stated although I do feel the need to highlight what I consider to be a pretty large glaring omission in your case, that of power draw, cooling, efficiency & fan noise, the Series S can be sourced for 70-100bux more than a x1x and eliminates all of the aforementioned contemporary issues that console is now plagued with.

2024 update: Xbox One Xs are absolutely worth it. They cost around 100€ now in Germany. For that money, you get solid LAN gaming machines. Just invite a few friends and tell them to bring controllers. Compared to a PC, a bunch of games have split screen, allowing you to play the Halo collection with 4 players per console in LAN or CoD with 2 players per console. Biggest downside is that online gaming costs money. I just picked up 3 limited edition ones (Scorpio, Gears 5 and Gold Rush) for ~125€/each.

For me, the main Achilles heel is that proprietary HDD option. Like whom in their right mind would charge those prices esp. when faster M.2 cards along with 2TB options are more affordable.

Hey man, awesome video here, really interesting. A couple of nitpicks though (yes I'm that guy), i've never owned an xbox one but : Xbox one was not sub HD. It ran mainly at 900p, 720p is considered HD. You mention that One X was the only way to run RDR1 at 4k, this is also false. You can emulate it through xenia or rpcs3 at 4k, on xenia at 4k60 with forced 16x Anisatropic filtering, forced FXAA and FSR, modded higher resolution shadow maps and reflections. So the definitive way to play it is on PC, through Xenia, which only requires a mid-range CPU to run at 60fps. Also some of your points about AC Odyssey are actually placebo effect. You cannot see distant NPCs in villages, it does not have an improved LOD setting (Digital Foundry confirmed this). The only upgrades were resolution and shadow resolution Good video though!

I bought a used Series X from OfferUp for $400 that came with 2 controllers that have rechargeable battery packs, 4 games, an RGB stand, and the HDMI cable and power cord. I'm able to play games on the 2TB external hard drive from our XBOX ONE on the Series X.

I picked up a refurbished one x for 200 euro or so. Delighted with it. All the backwards compatibility that the Series consoles can do (besides fps boost), can play my physical discs, great aesthetic and series x controller can work with it.

9:47 In my opinion the answer is yes providing you do this upgrade. In 2023, regular hard disks should not be used in gaming anymore, it just makes loading times slow and the system feel sluggish. There's no reason to use them either because SATA SSDs are cheap enough now. Yes people will say 'buy an external SSD so you don't have to open the console' but then you won't see the benefit of the decreased boot times and smoother system UI which is normally something that gets worse as the console ages and the HDD degrades. I would also say that on a launch system that's never been opened, the cheap thermal paste is nearly 6 years old now so it will be dry and the console fan will be loud so it's also worth replacing that with some new stuff and I would recommend Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

I’m a video game collector & I have my ps5 on my 4k monitor set up at my desk not in my room but I also have a 4k tv in my room so I decided it would be a great Idea to add a xbox one x to my collection & put it in my room on my tv just in case I want to relax away from my desk but still have a 4k resolution but for the cheap so I went in ebay won one and I will tell you I am blown away it surprisingly keeps up with my ps5 and the only difference I really see is that the frame rate isn’t as solid the ps5 stays at a solid 60 fps in most games while the one x bounces around a bit more but not under 40 fps the fact that you can get it for $150 is impressive it’s definitely not $350 less of a system for sure it’s msrp was $500 as well at launch and it definitely shows

I recently got one, a boxed Gears 5 edition from CEX for just £180. I got that one due to having the Gears of War 3 Xbox 360 and the Gears of War 4 Xbox One S. The only downer is the 1tb hdd the Gears of War 4 Xbox has a 2tb hdd.

My sons XBOX one packed up *the fat one with the huge power brick, we looked at getting him a Series S or Series X but decided to get a One X Gold rush like new condition off Ebay all he plays is Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, Rocket League, Sonic Forces and Fall Guys. Even with an SSD upgrade factored in its nearly 85 pounds cheaper than a Series S and half the price of series X. If it lasts him for another 18 months then i figure thats a good deal.

Im liking the playstation 5 as well.. i used to play on playstation 4 but i like playing elder scrolls online and i kept dcing every min on it.. probably because of me not cleaning it but i couldn't even play for 5-10 mins and i was dcing kept getting notifications and playstation i can get a full playing day without dcing and its great. im getting used to the big controller compared to the playstation 4 controller and its getting a lot better when i am getting used to it.

My one x lights up stays on for 20-45 seconds and then powers down… read that it could be a hard drive issue and that it needs replaced. Had a series x and it was lightening fast with the ssd about to do a swap on my one x because I definitely think the one x is a fantastic console and the drive swap looks super simple so most definitely worth getting even if you don’t swap the drives

@@BULLETDAMAGE it is a great machine, I had to sell that one as I got a crazy offer from a collector looking for the limited edition console. I purchased a series s as it was very affordable and also looks decent and runs all the games and will be getting another one x for all my disk games. To be honest the one x still looks alot sharper but frame rates on the SS are super smooth.

I have both the ps5 and series x. And they just aren’t sticking, ps5 only gets used for RU-vid and Xbox for playing older 360 games lol. So far it’s probably one of the worst purchases, all it really did is upgrade eternally and nothing else. I miss when the one x came out and people were blown away at the fact Xbox released a good console in that generation 😂 really great video. Made this console look insanely good, I would recommend a series x for your uses. If you have a 4K tv then it’s definitely worth it. Sadly this gen just doesn’t grab me as much as others

Really excellent video.. Ive just traded my PS4 Pro for a One X . and im loving it so far.. mainly due to the MASSIVE library of xbox, 360 and one games you can play with the ultimate game pass and with the disc drive over the "S", you can buy pre-owned and old 360 discs for as little as £2 (my copy of fable 2 was.. yes, actually £2..) The main reason I ditched Sony is that their monthly PS Store is expensive, their monthly PS store game pass games have gotten worse and worse in the last 6 months and now they have sold out... all there current and future titles are coming to PC and Steam.. it isnt even worth buying a PS5.. due to no more exclusives.. also, I actually like being able to swap batteries in my controller because my PS4 controller only lasted about 4 - 5 hrs of intense straight gaming,.. The only things I will miss from my PS4 is.. Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima (although both coming to Steam, I sadly still have to wait a year), The PS4 controller was better built and nicer to use IMO, and the Playstation UI was easier to navigate, but that will change over time as I get used to the more Media Centre focused xbox. Iam also considering the SSD upgrade .. but so far .. very pleased I swapped over.. loads more choices and love the Doldy Atmos Audio

@@seonsmith1667 all the games, including the newer enhanced ones will only run on the series s, the series S has a less Powerful GPU than the one X, but its a newer console so that doesnt really count in 2023 with enhanced games, the series S base model only has 512gb SSD which isnt expandable, so get the 1TB version also you have no blu ray drive, so you are completely dependent on Microsoft store, website sales and you cant play your old dvds, cds or blurays.. but in 2023.. unless you are a movie buff with a big library and with laptops, pcs, online streaming, and cheaper game website code sales, who buys discs anymore if you buy the Xbox live Gold ultimate game pass.. most games you can play free with ultimate.. With the one X,, you can replace the HDD or for an SSD making it as fast as the S, you have the bluray drive... for cheaper discs, even old 360 games (i bought Fable 2 for £2).... and you can plug in an external HDD into the one x for backing up all your games.. and have dozens of games ready to play... but the one x is now obsolete, so you cant play the new "series S/X enhanced" games on the one X, you can only get a one x pre-owned.. you get a new or nearly new series s for almost same price... If you want my opinion.. get a series S 1Tb version.. i wish i had now

I bought a Scorpio Edition virtually brand new, in box, for next to nothing ($130) prior to the launch of the series consoles. Must’ve been a desperate Xbot! Anyway, it’s perfect for playing my original Xbox games such as Battlefront and anything from the Star Wars series. It now sits next to my disc edition PS5, launch day 60GB PS3, and PC.

The series x is the one to go for if you are a console gamer though, can get then for £300 now 2nd hand loading times and frame rates are a game changer pretty much all titles are in 60fps and if you have the right tv/monitor 120fps

As much as I love my One X, the 30fps in the vast majority of games (even the enhanced ones) is quite a pain if you've been playing on PC at 120-144Hz 😐 Have to say tho, RDR2 and GTA IV (including its online) are a blast on it. Also there are a handful of games on the One X that give you the option ingame of high details at 30fps or "high" framerate (60fps) at slightly lower details, like for example Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. Sucks that this isn't an option for Forza Horizon 4 and 5... racing at 30fps ain't exactly nice, and I doubt you'd even notice lower details in either of those games vs. 60fps... oh well 🤷‍♂

I had skip altogether the Xbox one gen because I built a pc. Although now that I am casual gaming and don’t do competitive fps and mmorpg ( and I don’t want to upgrade) I got a series s with the bf deal. I loved it , so recently I bought a 3yo one x for the living room to transfer the series s in m bedroom because is so silent. For just 130 € without controller. I feel like with games like gta ,rdr, saints row , gears forza gonna be very useful for many years. Also it’s getting fps boost in most old titles.

@@Narkissos_1 60FPS on Latest saints row ? nop its more close to 34FPS, 60FPS on Forza Horizon 4 is at 1080 with lower Settings, that's why the Mode doesn't exist on Horizon 5, the Settings is already lower has they could do and most Games nowadays have caped Framerate.

Even better if you replace the console's thermal pads, the thermal paste on the CPU for a carbon pad by Grizzly and upgrade it to a 2TB internal SSD. Mine has never ever made a sound under any game, from CP2077 to RDR2, any 4K game, the console is completely silent and performs a bit better than stock One X machines. Also, excellent 4K bluray player for dirt cheap

I bought my Xbox One X when I couldn't get a Series X. I really didn't want a Series S. It makes no sense that the Series has has LESS memory then the One X. Really dumb move. The Series S really should have been better than the Xbox One X in all respects. It was a bad move.

I would say it is only worth it if you are wanting the backwards compatibility. Other than that not so much. Very few console exclusive titles I would actually want. That doesn't include Forza because I buy those games dirt cheap.

New consoles need thunderbolt to be able to play games from external drive. This is the only way NVMe SSD speed can be achieved externally. And this is very expensive to implement. Only high end stuff is equiped with thunderbolt.

I got my series X and series S for my niece the same day at GameStop and I didn’t wait. No big one who canceled pre-orders and stuff I had one guy who got a ticket for a series his ticket for the series S and that’s how I gave my new for Christmas present that year and I pre-ordered mine as soon as it got stopped because I knew of a website that updated instantly on the store was not stocking so I was ahead of the game on

The xbox one s xbox one x also has a 4K blu ray player not many people know that seriously try it youll not be let down. I only got a series s it cost me £120 for used with a box from 2021 manufacturer so i use my ps3 for blurays hope you learned something new

80€ Xbox One X and 100€ for 11 games on disk… Its amazing and a good second choice if you had a switch. Play on 4k hdr ambiligth tv with 400watt dolby atmos home cinema in game mode

It’s still last gen console so it won’t be making current gen run for its money, I had ps4 pro before which is comparable to One X before I upgraded to ps5 and let me tell ya it’s miles ahead of ps4 pro. Most of the games also have performance mode with 60fps and it’s very very hard to go back to 30fps after that.

For sure, the framerate advantage of the current gen is great and I didn't mean to downplay that. But the difference in graphical fidelity between the One X and PS5 is far less substantial than the Ps4 Pro to PS5. Might be because the One X is 6TF whereas the Ps4 Pro was just 4TF (IIRC).

As they are phasing out the Xbox One's then Series S would be a better pick if you need to play new/upcoming releases and you are okay with buying digital only. But if you aren't bothered about future releases, if you want a bargain and you want 4k and great graphics and want to be able to play disks, then the One X is the way to go.

Read Dead 2 looks considerably better on my one x then my series s. Its actually pretty noticably. I would have my one x as my #1 console if it pkayed new games.. if u don't care about new games i would definitely get a one x instead of a series S no ?.

Most Games run's in Checkerboard Rendering(RE Engine Games, Ubisoft Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 just to name a few), so its not "4K". Also not all Games have enhancement, like Watch Dogs and Dogs 2 are stick to their respective low res, even worse for WD2 with his shit Checkerboard Rendering technics. But yeah, its a nice system but its unfortunaly Dead for Microsoft and Publisher don't even try, like Callisto protocol that has 1440p output, but don't have X1XE Tag and so nothing more than a Boosted Resolution over the Xbox One. Note that unlike what you think, Games like Ghost Recon Wildlands doesn't even come close to the High Settings on PC, like other Games its a Mix of Very Low, Low, Medium and High Settings. A'd for RE4, the Game struggle at 720p on PS4, and so it will have even struggled more on Xbox One/OneS, and since Xbox One X is part of the Xbox One Familly, no Resident Evil for it, and i think, no more Capcom Games for it(SF6 not released on Xbox One Familly).

I bought one of these right before Cyberpunk 2077 cane out. Bought the game and didn't have anywhere close to the amount of issues ppl were having with that game on the Xbox One or PS4

Brilliant. I only just picked up Cyberpunk in the past year but I can say that, playing it on the One X, I only experienced minor bugs and generally they did not impact the experience too negatively. I did not see any of the disasterous ones that youtube was flooded with videos of! Thanks for your comment :)

I adore my Series X, which arrived on Nov 10, 3020, but also enjoyed my Project Scorpio, which arrived on November 7, 2017. My current PS4 Pro, at that time, quickly became a dust collector.

Thanks man! Appreciate it. If you're not particularly bothered by the newest and future game releases and can get this console for under $200 it's an absolute no-brainer. Definitely the best of "last gen" consoles by a long shot! But now that some big titles are coming exclusively to next gen, and the external ssd's are finally getting cheaper you may find it worth holding out and saving up for a Series X.

Just to have an idea, the average Brazilian salary is 2900 Reais, which translates to 500 US dolars lmaoooo. So you would have to starve for two months to buy a PS5, yes, two months, because on top of that we still pay a shitload of import fees and these kinda things. So a PS5 here retails for 3800 Reais more or less, which is like 700 dolars. So a used Xbox is like my only option you know? Its hard, being a fan of videogames in Brazil is hard
