Not just a beginner bike, a useful multi purpose tool. As the owner of a huge array of bikes, I still pick my 2019 Ninja 400 out to do most things. It does everything I need a bike to do, the rest are fun toys, but the 400 is ace.

We can reduce this video to one second: The answer is yes (perfect beginner bike). A great beginner bike isn't about speed, it's about money and weight. Some riders start with something expensive and/or heavy, and then they're afraid to drop it. That fear prevents learning.

Yammie being super awesome to the Z400 owner made me smile from ear to ear. It made her day to help put on that slip on. Like he said, little work but huge rewards. I've owned my 2021 Z400 for two years now and it was my first bike. Absolutely my favorite bike and I love every-single-time I get on her and take off on a ride. The only complaint is that seat. Ugh, you can't ride more than twenty minutes without the bum going numb. Thanks Yams and great video!

The Z400 is actually my second bike (started on a '84 Magna 700) that I picked up as something to commute around town and take through the mountains here when I first moved to Western NC. I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn or for a more seasoned rider as a commuter. It's great both for city riding and riding on the back roads, is fast enough to still be exciting, nimble enough to really dig into a corner, has decent passing power, feels surprisingly planted (unless a truck passes you on the highway being a 364lb naked bike...windscreens help), is still capable for highway riding if you don't mind being in the higher revs, and is friendly enough where its generally very confidence inspiring. Oddly enough, I feel like I've gotten more compliments on this bike than on any other I've owned (albeit from people who don't ride) and my only complaint is with the seat being a bit uncomfortable (which can be easily remedied by an add on or aftermarket seat/seatcover). All-in-all I feel like anyone who picks it up would be pleasantly surprised, it does more than you would expect it to while not pretending to be something more than it is.

This bike is considered a "big bike" here in the Philippines and it's popular amongst people upgrading from a 125/150 scooter. Still filters well in traffic and kind of makes you feel a little more superior than everyone on scooters, and there millions of those over here

Just a note regarding what you said about the suspension being stiff and having no sag for you, that means it's setup for a heavier rider, not a lighter rider like you said. So if you got no sag on it and she is lighter than you then she needs to soften it up heaps. She will be hitting bumps and the suspension won't be moving

My wife is 5' 4" and she is very comfortable on the bike - almost full contact both feet except heels are slightly off the ground. Other bikes she is tippy toes or just one foot. I'm 6'0" and maybe a little small for me but not bad at all. Love the power range - it is very forgiving if you are not in just the right gear. We also put on a Leo Vince exhaust - similar to the one you installed. Agree on the highway it can be a bit droning but in the city on side streets it is great.

Can easily do 85 on Freeway here in AZ. No complaints besides hard seat but you get used to it. Also gripping tank with legs helps problem of sliding into tank. Only 5k brand new , less than a lot of high end bicycles which is crazy. I have had zero issues with it. Starts every time and I changed my own oil in between the services. I am not mechanically inclined but it was about as complicated as changing out a few light bulbs. Super easy. Highway is fine, though winds can really push you around. Shifting is fine, good bike to learn how to clutchless shift also. Stock mirrors are horrendous for placement, I got some risers off ebay so I can stop seeing only my arms in the mirrors. It's fine for pace, but is strong under 55-60, above which you do notice the lower power.

I also put a Ventura rack on it and Perelli scorpion tires on it to make it a little scrambler bike. The Kawasaki Z 400 is perfect for around town which most motorcycles are used for anyway. another thing I like about it is that the turn signals and all the switchgear is right where all the 70s bikes I grew up with are. I *just* retired and will be moving to a midrange street bike to supplement the VStrom which gets long distance and light offroad duties. Having trouble deciding between an MT07, CB650R, Tiger 660 Sport, or a 700CL-X Sport. I think any would be good. I'd prefer non-Chinese but getting cruise control for < $7000 is appealing and I think it's a sweet looking bike right out of the crate. I prefer as quiet a bike as possible personally.

I love my Z400. However, at 3200 miles the clutch blew up. No warning, no noise, just boom. Been in the shop for 2 months waiting on parts. I went on the z400 subreddit and they said the clutch springs are soft, and that tends to happen. Excellent bike, other than the hand grenade in the clutch.

I used this bike while getting my A2 license but for me the bike was way too small in terms of size (not at least on power), so I decided to buy a 2020 Street Triple S (45hp, restricted engine) and I couldn't be happier with it! Just perfect, the handlebars are pointing outwards more than the Z, as I felt they were too close to my body, as well as my knees which I had serious pain while being more than an hour riding it. When I bought my Leoncino Trail I also looked at the Z400 and Ninja 400. I went with the Benelli just because the Kawi’s both felt a little on the smaller side compared to the Benelli. The 500cc also has a bit more low end grunt, the Ninja/Z was definitely a bit more of a rev happy engine. Part of wishes I had gone with the Ninja as I didn’t realize then I’d be getting into doing track days, and the 19” spoked wheels and semi knobbies on the Benelli won’t be great for track riding.

I bought it in 2019 and still have my ex demo 2019 Z400 ABS as my first bike in Australia and still love it - this was the first year for the Z400 with the previous year being the 300. I only paid A$6500 which was in line with the Yamaha MT03 and CFmoto 650. Before I got it I test rode a Yamaha MT03 and found that with its less displacement and more upright position less exciting than the Z which felt like it just wanted to lean in the corners and had way more pep - I'd only ridden a few 125cc scooters and a 150cc scooter in Asia before that but have had pretty quick cars before. One thing I don't like about the bike is the seat is terrible that after 40mins of riding I'm sore so hopefully I can upgrade that for a reasonable price. Also I did buy that windscreen in the video but found with my hight 5'10" 179cm it directed air directly into the middle of my helmet making the wind noise much worse than without the screen. For mods the dealer hacked on a Scorpion carbon fibre slip-on that must have been for another bike, but sounds good - see video on my channel. It's also got a mustard bikes Aussie made Fender eliminator, sticker kit for the black wheels, rear bobbins and radiator guard.

My bike in my late teen’s was a Honda 500-4cylinder. Then in my 20’s, a Honda 750-4cylinder. I’d rather try a smaller naked, and then if I want to upsize, then go to a Yamaha MT-07. For now though, should I get a KTM Duke 390, Yamaha MT-03, Honda cb300r, or a Kawasaki Z400?

I had no confidence in the front end of the MT, it felt sketchy like it was going to wash out on me. The Z400 felt great. Personally I’m still going to buy another MT09. I’ve owned 5 different bikes and go to all the demo rides I can, and after every bike I’ve ever ridden, the MT09 is my favorite. But the Z felt really good too.

For me, I just didn’t have the confidence and would not get it. To riders who aren’t as sensitive or maybe with some suspension tweaks it’s probably fine. @@javonfranklin5358 don’t fall for the “you will grow out of it” line. The 400 was a great ride when I test rode one. Slower bikes are still faster than 90% of cars on the road and are a lot of fun. To me, they are more fun because the engines and speeds are easier to handle. You can get more out of the bike with less risk. If you want to play around you can still wheelie a 400, you can do well at a track day with it too. If you want to have fun without being scared, then you won’t “grow out” of it.
