Matt Simmons and Damiani look back at the Zelda Timeline over the years and how Nintendo appears content to only invoke it when it suits them, how the staff who cared about Zelda's lore are no longer involved with the franchise, and why we should stop holding our breath over the latest entries' placement in the timeline or shedding tears when we're ultimately let down once again.

This is what it looks like to become too big of a fan of something. Where you’re never happy with the results despite overwhelming quality and success. This is the Star Wars effect.

Great stuff. Miyamoto is actually a pioneer for bringing stories to video games so I highly doubt he hates storytelling.
@JazGalaxy
@JazGalaxy 9 дней назад
He hates “storytelling”. He flat out says as much. But it’s worth nothing that what specific people call “storytelling” in games, they actually mean as “explaining”. They like someone to stand there, face the camera, and info dump garbage about nonsense fictional things that never happened. That’s not actually “story”.

I’m happy you guys got together to make an episode, but a lot of these takes are just goofy. Appreciate the games that did story well and hope you get more in the future. Tears of the Kingdom’s lukewarm story didn’t keep it from being a 10/10 game for many people due to its incredible gameplay and exploration. Zelda is a gameplay-centric franchise just like every other Nintendo franchise. While a more detailed and weighty story would be something hardcore fans would enjoy, Nintendo hasn’t done this in 40 years. Why should we expect them to do it now?

Guys sorry to tell you but Zelda timeline has never been relevant. Nintendo revealed the timeline outside of the games. If you play all the games there is no way to draw that diagram. There are massive contradictions and gaps. Series with good lore does not do that. In addition to that even story is not relevant. Story and lore is there to take Link's ass to point A to point B. It is an excuse to turn him to a wolf, give zonai powers, or ocarina. Nintendo has always been gameplay first developer in their core franchises. Old school fans are taking Zelda story way too serious. And let me tell you something. Nintendo will never make deep, emotional, mature Zelda story with lots of grey areas. This will never happen. This is not part of Nintendo's DNAs. They don't have army of writers like Naughty Dog has. If you accept this fact, I think you will have more fun with the franchise. Honestly all old Zelda fans want gameboy and n64 games with higher resolution and better graphics. Always complain. Just move on.
@XanderVJ
@XanderVJ 10 дней назад
The fact that you quote Naughty Dog, of all studios, as an example of good writing quality pretty much disqualifies your entire second paragraph. Or at the very least, if you think Naughty Dog has consistently good writing but the Zelda series hasn't.
@hododod246
@hododod246 10 дней назад
@@XanderVJ That is not the point. Quality of ND's narrative is irrelevant. You didn't get the point.
@XanderVJ
@XanderVJ 10 дней назад
@@hododod246 What is the point then? That they have a dedicated writing team? You know the Zelda team also has that, right? It's the people that appear in the credits in the section of "scenario", which is the term Japanese use to refer to script in video games? That Zelda stories have never been good and never will be? We're not in the early 2000s anymore, that statement doesn't hold water, even if you treat each game as a stand alone.
@hododod246
@hododod246 9 дней назад
@@XanderVJ when I look at tears of the kingdom credits I don't see any category for scenario writer, script writer or narrative designer. If you see, tell me the names. As far as I know story is mostly written by Fujibayashi and in the past Aonuma. Both of them are not writers. They are coming from game designer background. Dialogues are probably written by npc programmers. On the other hand when I look at the credits of let's say phantom liberty, there are scenario writers and narrative designers. If you are expecting Zelda game that will satisfy your expectation in terms of story telling, good luck with that. I would recommend you to look at interviews with nintendo devs or game makers tool kit videos. Most of the studios starts with story and concepts. On the other hand, nintendo starts game dev with a central game mechanic, and then everything else revolve around that. For example when Fujibayashi started totk, he made vehicles with the parts from botw.

It's understandable if they don't want to be tied to lore pillars for the sake of creativity, HOWEVER they want to have their cake and eat it too when they release stuff like timelines and slap callbacks in a new game for merely fanservice and no deeper reason in-universe

Early on it never was, but nintendo noticed that people really started to care about the lore. The older heads at nintendo wanted to mainly go for gameplay > story, but it seems like the generations after Miyamoto really wanted to push for Gameplay = Story. With botw and Totk being big hits, it kind of makes sense to have fresh lore, for many of the new fans.
@nworder4life

It's the exact opposite, miyamotto wanted the timeline and lore. The new guys like Aounuma didn't care.
@MuMasoo
@MuMasoo 11 дней назад
@nworder4life Lol, it's literally the opposite of what you said. Miyamoto was very notorious back in the day about gameplay over story. He was against many franchises even having big narratives. He wanted his games to be mainly gameplay focused. Aonuma cared more about having story. There are plenty of articles that have talked about this much deeper, even some that say Aonuma and Miyamoto would argue over the direction of zelda games. Miyamotos' only input in any games for decades now is just about gameplay.
@nworder4life

I don't really get the people who want Zelda to play exactly like Link in Echoes of Wisdom. I'm excited to see what we can do with Zelda's more puzzle-focused approach compared to Link. It's like people would rather mindlessly press B to swing a sword rather than use their brain to solve a puzzle. Edit: Typos.

Every new game makes the Timeline more convoluted, and it's obvious that the devs don't give any crap about it.... it's just marketing that cares about it, because it appeals to western fans... The only way to have it make sense is to think of each game as a different "Legend" from the same world. Like a Mythology, which somewhat relate to each other, but evolved and warped facts through oral transmission. Legends rather than History Chanel Documentary.
@XanderVJ
@XanderVJ 10 дней назад
It appeals to ALL fans, actually. Japanese Zelda fans are just as crazy about the timeline as Western fans are. As a matter of fact, Miyamoto and Aonuma most likely started to notice the interest over it from Japanese fans before Western ones. If you don't believe me, just search ゼルダの伝説 時系列, and you will see tons of content about it. Also... The idea of "thinking each story as a legend like in real life" doesn't really work, since mythology doesn't work that way. If you know your mythology you will know they study the canon legends to distinguish them from the apocryphal too. So discussing the timeline is EXACTLY how mythology works in real life already.

You two want something from Zelda that it has seldom ever been. It’s a ridiculous ask. Go play other games that do that for you. Let Zelda do its thing because it’s one of the only games that does that. Having finished the video, you’d be surprised to find out that you two are talking about 95+ rated games. This wasn’t just about story. This was y’all shitting on Zelda for two hours straight. Weeeeird.

Zelda is Zelda. Zelda isn’t going to cater to your Lyra specific, bad, takes on what it should do because it’s busy creating new Zelda fans who will be loving it long after you are dead. Unless it’s explicitly the same Link from one game to another, then I don’t pay attention to the timeline. Anytime there is a new Link, it’s basically a reboot. The timeline stuff is just marketing. No reason to give it too much thought other than some fun speculation. It’s not serious.

I love you guys and you’re entitled to want whatever Zelda you want. But I just think you come across as angry and bitter that Zelda is trying to change things and it sounds like you just want them to repeat the same formula they always had. Well then the argument becomes they never change things and it’s just the same old same old. For someone who loves Zelda as much as you Damiani, I’ve never heard someone complain about it more. At one point you sounded like another BOTW style game would kill your desire to ever play the series again. It sounded that irate and frankly irrational. I hope that branching out and experimenting with the formula will allow them to do a different entry in a different style every few years. 2024 2D entry, 2027 3D entry, 2030 open world. Hopefully something for everyone. L&R

“Parallel universes” is nonsense pedantry for Uber-nerds who can’t conceive of anything happening “just because” “it’s a game. None of this is real”. The more meaningless a persons life is, the more they need their fictional worlds to hold together with some sort of meaning.
