I like Theo Von and I can easily believe that in that moment he was joking about the snail. However when I listen to him I know he's joking sometimes and other times maybe adding a little bit that he either wishes he'd thought of at the time or thought at the time but didn't say outloud. Most of the time though when he's telling a story particularly when he seems serious and people around him still find it funny. I know what that's like because I have a lot of true stories other people find strange or hard to believe and are just normal to me but at least the first couple times I tell people they find it so funny that I learn to tell people such things when they need a laugh. I even learn to add in details that are true but I would've left out before because I learn that people seem to find it even funnier or more outlandish at the same time as wholesome with those details left in for some reason. I often feel like Theo Von is just a much more self aware version of me.

This is a perfect example of Theo's comedy. The main thing to know about him as a person is that his favorite book is the rhyme dictionary.

What I pick up from your observations is that “Theo is people” and what we see is most likely what we get. I’m an old gal. I remember watching Road Rules with my daughter and seeing how kind and thoughtful Theo was to those around him. I have an instinct to want to protect him against slings and arrows because I realize how far he’s come and how hard his path was to get there. We’ve had addiction issues in our family as well. Theo chose a tough road, but he appears a better, more enlightened human for it. And then he comes out with these off hand story telling gems and makes a room, an audience, or one person beside him laugh. That is a righteous gift. Thank you, Theo Von.
