Is There a Catholic Antidote to the Crisis in Higher Education?

Friends, according to Fortune magazine, overall undergraduate enrollment experienced the steepest rate of decline on record from 2019 to 2022, and it has only worsened since then. There are several explanations, but one cause is entirely self-imposed: most universities and colleges have now replaced education with ideology, subverting the search for truth with political indoctrination. Today, we discuss the ideological takeover of higher education and how the Catholic conception of the university can help provide an antidote.
A listener asks, if priests are meant to represent Jesus, are nuns supposed to represent Mary?

The Catholic education I received in high school was functionally indistinct from secular high schools. When religion was touched on, it was articulated in a twee and relativistic manner as if the teacher was sharing their opinion rather than reasoning out objective truth. There was no attempt to foster a sense of Catholic identity and mission. As a result, most of my former classmates are now atheists. The Church should definitely return its gaze to education - focus on completely outdoing secular schools in every field, train its students in philosophy, and promote purposefulness in the subjects being engaged with (e.g. how to use science to serve good).

Indeed, the marked absence of the field of philosophy and its intellectual reach is testimony to the power of evil. The rigour of theology I believe is also dependent on the panoply of perspective developed in philosophy.

this is a problem because some catholic schools don’t hire catholics to teach religion subject, or maybe even if they are catholics, they are afraid to offend someone. still the apologetics, philosophy and theology are disappearing and should be brought back.

I’m about to graduate this summer. As an English major there is a heavy focus on postmodernism… I am so grateful to my sister, she got married last year and I took RCIA with her. Getting to know Jesus, learn more about God and truly believe and trust in Him changed my life and saved me from depression. University could have killed my faith or worse, thank God I was in RCIA while covering Milton’s Paradise Lost.. the amount of peers that sympathized with Satan were many and I could have been one of them if I stayed willfully and pridefully ignorant. I learned about Bishop Barron from father Mike and Dr. Peterson! Also turns out I had one of Barron’s books on my shelf this whole time, definitely reading it now!!!

Because of this kind of stuff I worry about sending kids to college at all. Things were bad enough when I attended when it was mainly students hooking up in the dorms and using their newfound freedom to stop attending church. Now from the top down there is a lot of antireligious pressure, and if you resist the message most people will deride you and label you a bigot. I know some very good teachers who live constantly wondering how soon they will be fired because they don't promote the message.

Attended a Jesuit Catholic university in NY the 90s. Learned progressive and Marxist thought/values from multiple professors in the humanities, which I found to be convincing at the time. Faith was totally absent from daily experience as a student unless you sought it out. Today, this university is as liberal as any Ivy. Been thinking about this a lot as my son enters HS next year.

I assume you are talking about Fordham University. I was also there in the 90’s and could not agree more with your comment. Sadly, Fordham now seems only slightly more Catholic than a secular private university.

I agree that college was pushed too hard, certainly over my generation. I know many people that struggle with feelings of inadequacy over not getting a degree even though they make good money and have strong faith, close family, etc. College shouldn't be a requirement for success in life. My husband and I are raising our kids to look at all avenues and if college is a requirement for the avenue that interests them, then college is the path for them, so I love that Bishop Barren touched on that!

A large issue is also price. The ideal education seems to be a Catholic liberal arts education that teaches some kind of high-earning trade skill such as something in healthcare, technology, or other high-earning fields. Even vocational training like mechanics or plumbing should be offered.

Thanks for a wide-ranging conversation. It is interestin to listen to this discussion as someone working at a University outside the U.S. where things seem a bit different to what is being described here. This is a relatively short conversation and so naturally limited, but I wonder would it be possible to discuss some of the more practical issues in more detail elsewhere? For example how do academics' employment conditions - especially the increasing use of adjunct staff - affect things? This could be a particular issue if you want staff from different disciplines to have time and space to talk to each other. I enjoyed reading Zena Hitz's work on the need to increase our focus on teaching rather than research - is this something that should be considered in more detail? Issues of cause and effect - I may be wrong but where I live the changing ratio in women to men in Higher Education seemed to predate widespread social discussion of 'toxic masculinity' and seemed to relate more to girls' performance at school before University (sometimes explained by girls' greater mature at about 18, not sure if this is true or not). It was a trend seen in the physical sciences as well as the arts and humanities. Finally I'd like to know more about the limits on academic freedom and speech raised here. While we might all agree on the worst things - what are the grey areas, and who would decide? That aspect of the discussion worried me quite a bit. Thanks again

I have been thinking about going to school to study more psychology. I would like to go for a second Master's Degree. It's important to me because there were a large number of people from the parish and the diocese that I belonged to who helped me get better enough to seek my Commercial Driver's License and a smaller number of people intensively helping me after my Class C sized vehicle and I took a tumble with a drunk driver. I'm hoping that my path leads to a really good over the road job that will help me pay for my second Master's Degree on my own, and out of my own pocket. Then hopefully the more classes I take -- then I will be able to apply for grants and scholarships. I have disability, now, but I have more abilities than disabilities, and I can still learn. This dialog gives me some hope that I am heading in the right direction in my life.

Transitioning from "higher education is in trouble due to plummeting undergraduate admissions" to "one cause is the ideological takeover of higher education" is poorly formed. During this discussion, "wokeism" is ill-defined so I cannot necessarily agree with any of the conclusions. Bishop Barron doesn't provide a sufficient explanation at 09:00. What is "critical theory"? I'm a huge Bishop Barron fan but this show has left me fearful that Matthew and Bishop Barron are victims of this Trumpian era mind virus that "disagreement with the structural inequalities in society" means that you are anti-Christian/Catholic or communist. Please. Can we try to define these charged words -- and, more importantly, our beliefs -- before throwing them around haphazardly.

Yes, but it is probably better in the longterm for higher education to fail. What was once institutions where men went to learn and apply his gifts has now become the bane of society in that it effectively enforces an order that was doomed to fail. The walled nature of higher education is its ultimate downfall-it needs to intermingle and become intimate with reality again. It would be better if the idea of elite vs common were put to rest. As the church is universal, society needs to adopt the notion of any moral improvement is good improvement, no matter where it germinates from. This was one of America's core strengths in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Technical educations are good for some people. They can provide a good paying job. A stable life. If the person does not like studying that is fine. But if the person does like to learn, I would not recommend it because it could clamp the individual's potential. Higher education and learning is not something useful only to find a job, but also for life in general, and I think it should be encouraged for everyone, even in their free time, even if they have a technical career. It is part of life, like the difference between read and not being able to read. Not having a good education is a disadvantage in society. And it is also the best for society. If the masses are well educated, we can have a better democracy. Otherwise they could easily be manipulated.

Perhaps they should have said “I condemn the conditions which have given rise to groups which feel the need to act out like this.” I also think that they were responding to the way they were being bullied & harassed & obviously (& with a personal distain) pre- judged already by the speaker, who was framing things so that those being ‘questioned’ were already made out to look like the bad guys. They set up/ confirmed their own opposition it was so obvious watching (& it felt like watching a car crash). It’s painful (& so sad and disappointing) to listen to BB not acknowledging the bigger picture here. Does he not think that Jewish people need Jesus (‘too’ or perhaps rather ‘MOST OF ALL’ - esp. after watching that speaker that day).. isn’t there a saint (a woman religious) who said the most anti- Semitic thing you can possibly do is to NOT share with a Jewish person about (‘their’*)Jesus ? *theirs 1st & also, what about ‘glory and honour for the Jew first, but condemnation for the Jew 1st also.. ‘(in Paul’s writings, who was Jewish). Thank you, Bishop Barron! I agree to it totally. Catholic Colleges need to become a real evangelizing resource to present true God, otherwise not need to exist! Also we need to face to the fact that the most of colleges around the world were built originally from the real faith to God! But the newer generations of human beings little by little walked away from their original purpose, and teach things not good for people’s souls, but we all know , if a person lost soul, smarter s/he is, the more harmful things s/he could do to ruin their own goodness even to the society! Now, it is time to awaken and rebuild the true relationship with God. Especially, since 1962, the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that school-mandated prayers in public schools are unconstitutional, more and more people in this country started to abandon God! See it now, after 60 years, what is happening to people’s souls!

I was studying for an MDiv at a Catholic theologate as a layman trying to learn more about my faith. My concern is that the Catholic Moral Theology Academy is informed by the secular Social Sciences, which is heavily ideological. I see that even in the documentary trajectory in Social Teaching. Pope Leo XIII, through the three encyclicals "Quod Apostolici Muneris", "Arcanum" and "Rerum Novarum" taught that the ideology of Socialism, Communism and Nihilism is always and everywhere evil. Yet, even beginning in "Quadragesimo Anno" I see a trajectory of incrementally embracing some of the foulest tenets Socialism, including depreciation of private property and the glorification of the State as Savior for the poorest of the poor. I find, because of my concerted study of the three Leonine encyclicals about Socialism, I have found that I must dissent from the current form Catholic Social Teaching. It is a thin veiled acquiescence to an ideology that is antitheological in nature.

Re the bit about majority Catholic faculty and then only those who agree with it, I don't know about that. In higher ed especially, you need your beliefs challenged. Hard disagree with that part.
@stooch66
@stooch66 2 месяца назад
I’m sorry, an echo chamber? An echo chamber of the true Faith? That is far different than an echo chamber of far left thought. Catholic universities and schools BEGIN with the proper formation in the Faith. It is the true Faith, not one of many options. If you believe that is just one of many options, then you will have a hard time accepting that a Catholic university should be anchored in Christ and His teaching. He is the Logos.
@stefani991
@stefani991 2 месяца назад
@@stooch66 Yes, an echo chamber. Allowing only one viewpoint can lead to confirmation bias, where individuals only seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs. This can hinder intellectual growth and limit the ability to critically evaluate ideas. Consider what happened to Galileo and his heliocentric theory. The Church's initial rejection of his views was based on a narrow interpretation of Scripture and a lack of openness to new ideas. This led to misunderstanding and conflict that could have been avoided with more diverse perspectives among the clergy and scholars of the time. The Church's acknowledgment of its mishandling of Galileo's case serves as a reminder that institutions can err. Embracing diverse perspectives can help prevent such errors in the future by encouraging humility and openness to new ideas. Also, in today's world, we need to be able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and faiths. Exposure to a variety of perspectives within education can better prepare us for the complexities of the real world. I understand your perspective on the importance of a Catholic university being anchored in the true Faith. However, there is value in diversity of thought, even in a Catholic institution. Allowing for discussion of varying and even opposing beliefs does not automatically mean compromising on foundational doctrine. In fact, it can strengthen by fostering an environment of rigorous intellectual debate. (Because I believe that my faith can stand up to any secular argument) Becoming an echo chamber, whether in a Catholic university or any other institution, is a net negative because it stifles intellectual growth, limits the exploration of new ideas, and can lead to a narrow-minded approach to complex issues. Embracing diversity of thought, can act to uphold foundational beliefs while also fostering a robust academic environment that benefits all.
