So good to see you out and about with John, would be great to see more videos with you guys in. Im also looking forward to your new RU-vid series/guide 'Getting away with sketchy parking in residental areas'
Definitely an oversaturation of low effort rambling and derivative content. Everything from the losers from Trash Taste, to mind numbing shock p*rn Oriental Pearl, to retro game RU-vidrs. Even Abroad in Japan has admitted to lacking anything interesting to say anymore. Legit the only worthwhile RU-vid channel about Japan that actually feels fresh and actually presents interesting things about Japan without meandering is JapanAlysis. Beyond that it's all the same low effort trash. The Japanese Reporter is somewhat okay but he also seems drag on videos just for the sake of seeming professional.
I remember when it was mostly just Kevin Cooney and you were pretty small as a channel at the time. Back then it was so new and fresh. Unless you had really been to Japan and spent time in Japan you had no real idea about it. The major issue now is you do have these guys with larger channels.. that can go to Japan for a month or whatever and just film a ton of content and release it over some weeks. I mean.. lets face it.. we all know vending machine videos have been dead a long time. You really need to move deeper and do what only you 10+ years living in Japan guys can do. Go to the places where only Japanese people know. Speak Japanese to them and film it. Talk to Japanese people.. ask the real questions that people want to know. The fact that you are so fluent in Japanese is such a huge advantage. Same with having the motorcycle and knowledge of the city that only comes with time. You will know the little places not on trip advisor.
Havent watched you in awhile man, you're looking amazing! Bit of an update for me: Getting a car end of the year and will be moving out soon too! Found some affordable student accommodation so time to start life. I'm getting out more, going to concerts etc. Got a gig on Death Metal gig on Thursday. So pretty good. Lifes doing well, finished Sem of Uni.
Had to comment on this one! Been a fan of you and your YT content for close to 15-years now! Awesome to see John on the channel! Loved his old show - would be great to have him back on.
There's not really an "oversaturation." It's just that the _vast_ majority of it is unoriginal, derivative of more established channels, and don't really offer any meaningful insight not available from any of the other such channels. In short, the vast majority of those channels aren't very good. When almost every channel is making content largely identical to the other ones, then it will feel like oversaturation. Like, the vast majority of "ex-pat in Japan" type channels only focus on the completely overdone aspects of such content: RU-vid doesn't really need another tour of Harajuku, Akihabara, or Asakusa if you cannot provide some sort of insight or access that other content providers haven't already done a dozen times over. Very few of these channels ever delve into things beyond the Western stereotypical ideas of what the country is like (example, I spent a week in Tokyo last November, and literally the only people I saw wearing Harajuku style clothing in that time period were some of the shop employees on Takeshita Street. The fashion style is about as common as seeing a goth kid today in the USA. Instead of focusing on this incredibly niche aspect of Japanese pop culture that appeals to some people in the West that don't have a realistic understanding of Japanese popular culture, why not produce content about what fashion is actually being worn by young Japanese people when they go out?) Or, maybe some content about the country outside of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto? Like, Nagoya is the third largest metro area in the country with a population of over 6 Million people (it would be the 6th largest metro area in the USA, for comparison to how big it is, larger than Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami, etc.), but you hardly ever see any ex-pat content creators doing videos about Nagoya. To me, a decent example of this is the channel by Yuka (though, she's a local, not an ex-pat). She has a day job, but uses weekends to take a train to various smaller cities around Japan to spend the night and see what interesting things these smaller and less well-known areas have to offer. To me, this is far more interesting that _another_ video from a maid cafe. Edit: Oh, and content providers just walking along the street talking randomly, clearly having done no real research about the area before going there is definitely overdone, but that's not just in Japan. That type of content provider is oversaturated literally everywhere in the developed world. But, two or three such channels would be too many.
Don’t hate the player hate the game. Even abroad in Japan said this when he did that documentary about Fukushima, it was a big deal for him to tell that story and nobody fucking watched it. More people needed to watch it but nobody gave a shit even though it’s a very important topic. At the end of the day these guys are just chasing the dollar and I don’t think you can hate them for giving people at least one a majority of the people want. My stuff might not be that well edited or interesting but I like the fact that I get to give my perspective and opinion about this place that I’ve lived in for a long time that is probably very different from a lot of other people doing RU-vid. Line yeah I get what you’re saying. I want to have more Japanese people that show off their unique side that hasn’t been taken by a bunch of TikTokers already yet
@@TkyoSam But, "chasing the dollar" results in repetitive crud. How often do those folks produce anything decent? At least try to find a way to put an original spin on it. It's lazy to just do another walk through a highly popular tourist area. I will give another example of something more creative. There is an expat channel focused on promoting lesser known rock and metal bands in Japan. He does videos about the shows he sees, the various smaller Tokyo venues, and does interviews with bands. It's still a new and small channel, but the content is infinitely more interesting than another maid cafe expose'.
John is getting old and he's significantly more paranoid about over tourism fhan the majority of young Japanese people are. Media always comes with biases, and all of them are catered towards old people like John here in Japan.
Sam should also have "you found me" cards to give to loyal stalkers erh viewers who stumbled upon him on Tokyo. Only in Japan John Daub is the reason im subscribed to TkyoSam here!
i don't think there is i really enjoy especially the pokemon card videos because no one is doing them in the states i feels like also the creators making content about toys and figures i love because i collect toys and enjoy looking at all the cool stuff any good video have a great day and keep up the great work
Alright, PapaTkyo, how much did you have to pay John to hang out with you? John, if you are reading this blink twice if you are under duress. lol jk it was good to see you and John hanging out.
@@TkyoSam he's coming to tokyo his Thai gf is coming if you do meet up with him pls bring Nick Daniel knows of nick from his stream with Sam Pepper you's guys would be insane but tell Nick to calm a little tho
No, don't bring J on the channel. He was being too rude and had a "I don't give a fuck attitude" in this one, despite his numerous flaws that I can easily identify!
@@TkyoSam You're either being delusional or being sarcastic. Either way I couldn't care less about you, its just that john is a scumbag His wife is hot though.
