Hearing Joey speak while looking at the table and stamping or what ever he was doing while Aki trying to speak to him was like seeing the last boss draw it's sword. He's just there, talking, Menacingly. Edit: I thought I was the only one who saw him like that, but bro was I wrong. Over one thousand likes! Thanks!

THIS IS HOW YOU GET GOOD AT SPEAKING ANY LANGUAGE "I AM JUST CONFIDENT TO SAY THE WRONG THING!"I have lived by this my whole life: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese. While I learn, I'm okay with making these mistakes because over time, I will get better and slowly stop making those mistakes. Aki is 1000000% on this mindset when it comes to learning any language. No one is going to beat you up because you made a mistake. Hopefully, they will tell you what you did wrong and help you fix it.
@OwlskiTV
@OwlskiTV 7 месяцев назад
Agreed. Part of my family is Filipino, and one of my cousins there often boasts about how she graduated with valedictorian in her school and that she's top of the class when it comes to her English classes, yet whenever I spoke to her, she never would speak to me in English in fear she'd mess up. Despite her understanding me, despite her being able to reply to me in English, she (instead) chose to use someone else to translate what she was saying in her native tongue, which (imho) feels like it completely defeats the purpose of learning the language. ----------------- A lot of times people often forget that making mistakes (and learning from them) is how we learn. I'd even go as far as to argue that you learn more from your mistakes.

I wish I could do that; I'm stuck in my little city cause "uni here is good, why waste money to change city?" But all I really want is to study Japanese... I feel I lose my purpose staying here. But at the same time I don't want my family to make an enormous sacrifice for me and not use the money, for example, to buy a vacation for themselves, which they totally deserve. What I'm certain of is also that I can't keep studying what I am now and get a degree, I feel that either I change course and take japanese NOW or I'll drop out.

And once more in English: I think you're doing well, Aki. I've heard that Japanese is particularly hard for English native speakers, and I think studying it part time makes it harder. I, a native speaker of a different language, have been studying Japanese for over 20 years, and I'm not fluent yet, there's lots of room to improve. In my case, I was (supposedly) doing it full time in high school and at uni, but I only became able to hold a normal conversation after I graduated and started working at Japanese companies and shit. I think if you use a little bit of Japanese every day, eventually you'll get to a more natural fluent way of speaking.

I’ve heard this as well. In fact, she told me learning English was easier for her than learning Japanese, even though Japanese was her native language. I’ve wanted to learn Japanese for a long time, however; I feel very discouraged by the fact that I struggle severely with short term memory recall issues, even with repetition.
@jmbickham

I dunno. I didn’t find learning Japanese to so impossibly difficult… but then again… all my teachers called me abnormal, so maybe I’m not the best judge of that.😅 At least to me… especially when I looked at foreigners I knew in Tokyo who lived there for 10-16 years, but basically could only order at restaurants… I think it generally comes down to drive. Are you ABSOLUTELY driven and determined to try to achieve near-native fluency? Being willing to eat, sleep and shit Japanese day and night… at any and every opportunity you get… always avoid using English with Japanese friends, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. (most never did with me anyway because my Japanese is much better than their English and… well… I don’t like being a free English teacher). Language and culture are closely tied, so spend some time learning the culture and mannerisms. Or at least it worked something like that for me anyway…

Exactly, it just comes down to focus and determination in the end. I completely understand if somebody doesn't have that same drive though, among needing the time to juggle japanese with everything else in a busy life. I managed to learn a lot and get kanji down pat by slaving away at it for days on end when I had no job and a ton of free time. Though I'm also heavily invested in japanese culture and media so I naturally felt compelled to learn. There was games and other stuff for my favorite franchise that only existed in japanese or you had to look up some fan translations, so I felt like not knowing was an obstacle I had to get through. But, I'm also an outlier. 😅@@jmbickham

Outputting is sooo tough so i can relate to you Aki! I’ve been traveling to Japan for abit this year with my N4-early N3 level grammar and vocab and the struggle is real. I’m currently staying a few days in Nagano area where English is rarer so i can feel the strain in communicating, however it is so rewarding.

“Where is X?” And “Where is the bathroom (toilet)” will be your two best friends! Others like “how much is it? (When buying something)”, “do you have X?”, and “What’s your name?” Are also super useful! Have fun and good luck!

I really enjoyed seeing you and Joey speak Japanese to each other! I would love to see more of that! To be honest I'd love to see more english speaking youtubers trying to speak Japanese on their youtube channels more often! Huge well done for taking the Japanese classes and for not being afraid to make mistakes ...that is how we all learn.

I feel like I can relate to this on so many levels. When I went to college, I ended up switching programs and ended up going with a bachelors in Spanish language and I studied for a good amount of time and even now today is still feel surreal and a lot of times when I do have conversation stuff a lot of people when I speak it will be like oh your Spanish sounds really good and stuff and I just kinda brush it off because I know them I’m still not perfect Grammar isn’t always together and I struggle anyway with vocabulary especially in English so I’m not the strongest in speaking I’m pretty good with reading and writing so this actually resonate with me a lot and I definitely understand your point of view with just even learning understanding, and speaking in a completely different language

Honestly the point you made with surround yourself with the language is the best advice i also always give others. I was so bad in english while in school and i really learned english by myself by consuming a lot of videos in english and reading a lot in english. and now i am pretty fluent in it, yea sure there will be some hickups but i also have those in my native language, and also grammar but i think it is more important to be able to convey what you want to say than having perfect grammar. especially when you are still learing the language.

I wholeheartedly understand the stress you have gone through in life, sending prayers and condolences to you and your family; but seriously give yourself some credit. It kinda is a tab bit frustrating when everyone is telling you something good and you undermine it/yourself. You are doing so good Aki, give yourself some credit and keep going ❤️
