I really like how you explained how each food item was bad and why. It's nice to hear the science behind it! I haven't fed carrots because it seemed to upset my beardy's stomach. I didn't realize the crickets eating them would resolve the sugar content issue. Really cool video!

I once read that beardies weren't effected by capsaicin and therefore could eat chilis but I never believed that.

I mean birds aren't, thats pretty much what chilis have adapted for, but I dont know how that generalizes across lizards, if at all.

Pretty sure capsaicin affects mammals only. My tortoise doesn't react to it at all and happily devours chilies.

So if i fed my dubia roaches strawberries, it wouldn't be good for my beardy? If they're not good to eat then should i just take the strawberries out and wait for these roaches to eventually pass them out of their system?

@@ReptilesandResearch I do remember strawberries having decent water content and I just looked up if it was okay and what contents it has for nutrients, I'm just more worried that my bearded dragon is not getting the hydration he needs via food, he's I believe five months old and i'm still learning on how to gutload dubias, I have given carrots but I can't tell if roaches are picky since they kinda neglect it.

I do feed him greens but more of roaches then the greens, that 80%/20% for juveniles and then switched foe adults

Based on what I can see they're...okay? Not great, not bad, just okay. Like 60% water by weight, more phosphorus than calcium but not a huge source of either. Good for supplemental hydration, wouldnt call it a staple

There are a lot of things on this list that are definitely a big no on giving it to a bearded dragon. However a lot of it as well can be givin. Just not on a daily basis and should be rotated out with other veggies. Fruit is a good once a week treat, and a small amount. There are several really good lists of what to feed daily and weekly to a bearded dragon.

probably best to avoid. Insects themselves are typically pretty high in phosphorous and low in calcium in general, to the point where black soldier fly larvae are hailed for their really great calcium to phiosphorus ratio of...1.5 to 1. feed your feeder insects the same stuff that you feed your beardies, that way they double dip on good veggies.

I heard that they eat cactus fruit in the wild but I also heard that the fruit has a different type of sugar in it. Would that be okay to feed my beardy?

All fruits are going to have SOME amount of fructose in them, that's the sugar that's in fruits, it's name is literally derived from the latin word for fruit. it's just that the wild cactus fruits are typically lower in sugar than the stuff in the supermarket because they've not been selectively bred to be tastier for people (ie., sweeter). They're also pretty high in potassium, as are cactus leaves (nopales) - I would avoid them.

@@ReptilesandResearch I’ve never seen that plant in a grocery store before. I remember watching your video with beardie vet how they eat like red tyme or something in the wild and get calcium up to 25:1 and that why they don’t need supplements
