Box office flops might be hurting Hollywood, but they're destroying movie theaters. But there is hope in the form of a ton of movies coming out this year and a stacked lineup in 2025.
I’m going to do a month of the Regal unlimited month pass when I’m living near one for a couple months, but besides that the only movie I’m for sure going to is Twisters
Here’s hoping Fathom has some great rereleases as I had a fantastic time seeing Gone With The Wind, Smokey and the Bandit, and The Mummy. The last Hollywood current release I saw was Napoleon and yeah…I still want my money back 😂 But as for new releases so far I’ll stay home with my physical media etc. Since Hollywood brought this fresh hell on itself…well, yeah. 😊
I've become so apathetic to movies and TV. Remember when a great movie or show came out and we sat in eager anticipation for the next chapter? Now I dread when a good movie or show gets a next chapter, as more often than not it isn't good and I feel awful for being excited.
My local theater sadly closed down for good two months ago. It was around since i was i kid in the 90s. The final 'new' release was Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. So it ended with a whimper. :(
@@TheBonebridger There was an old hipster mall in Down town Calgary, Eau Claire at it's height it hosted a huge internet cafe-and arcade. Went to see Star Ship troopers there in the 90's, the last movie I went into see was "Society of Magical Nergros". They had a blood clinic there, that needed a new home for a few years, but little known that the mall was to be eventually condemned for the new C-train line and redeveopment.
Yes, I spent a 2500 for a movie room. Watched Rankin Bass Hobbit , universal BW invisible man and 1970 catch 22 this week. They can keep their race and gender swapped garbage, homosexual story lines(just because??).identity politics. Etc etc. im done
They gotta stop the bait and switch woke tactic it’s getting sickening. “Come see your favorite movie/sequal with all your beloved characters…only for them to be sidelined or only in 2 scenes while you enjoy this strong lead female role that also has a lesbian love interest” Woke agenda is fucking garbage.
I didn’t realize it till this comment, but that was part of what was a disappointment with Dial of Destiny; having Sallah in the trailer than having him dismissed from any of the adventure parts of the film and replaced with a fanfic character
Who then go on to beat the shit out of and humililiate your beloved characters. Just to highlight that lesbian lead females are tougher, smarter than anyone else on the planet.
They occasionally have these specials like Coraline 15th anniversary, Bill and Ted 35th aniversary. It seems to bring in the people. It's small stuff like this that keeps the old aging model alive. But bearly. Think of the Cinema as an old man dying of some god knows old man disease, but going in for treatment just to delay the inevitable. Like the old Emperior of Man on Warhammer. Still very strong, but weakening. Like old Father Odin. Like the warm old man summer-Indian summer last hit of heat before winter comes. But a Cinema chain can only gimmick and stay alive for so long. We rely on hit movies to last as long as they can, to keep people coming in in between other big hits, and filler movies in between for the Fringe guests: ie Trap, Forge, Thelma, Regan seems a small hit for the elderly. We show operas and Bollywood movies to entice that particular group and their large Indian families. Cinemas get a small 10% for new movies, hten 30% when the movie is stale (about 4 showings a night). So we count on the movie lasting as long as possible, and we rely on the condiments, The larger the crowd the more the place made that night, to pay us all off. So we rely on squeezing all the audience with our fringe movies. Some only last 1 week, others about 5 weeks, before going down to 1 a night... I usually see how many more come to the movie when it's in "last stand mode". so these classic marathons we really need to do more of them, run them for a week.
I've gone from seeing 2 to 3 movies a month to 2 a year .... prices and Quality are what's stopped me and my friends going to the cinemas ... Most of us having 75" TV's or bigger and this makes it less likely to shell out money for a movie we could watch with friends at someone's home.
Actually, I watched that movie on cinema. Unfortunately, there's only three people including me watch the movie. So surprised that they release on digital so early
I put a chart in the Discord that shows the net profit for the top 20 movies this year. Kung Fu Panda is presently #1. The interesting thing that I found was that if you consider profit only, the profitable movies have made almost one billion while the non profitable ones have lost over two billion. That's nearly double.
Ugh! Why does EVERY movie need to be a sequel and a tent pole movie? When going to the movie theater was enjoyable, it wasn’t like this, and there were even small and medium budget pictures that had actual substance to them and audiences were entertained by them. That is all long gone, and will NEVER return to movie theaters because that is now the domain of streaming services.
Movie theater experience with a good movie is still top-notch for movie viewing but with my Soundsystem and 70 inch screen TV and being able to pause and go to the bathroom and eat whatever I want just makes for a better experience at home
I still love going to the theater. The experience is still special as far as I'm concerned, but it is expensive, so I'm not going to pay to be preached at, offended, disgusted or just plain bored! The theaters are re-releasing a lot of older and better stuff this year, so I still have a reason to go occasionally! It would truly break my heart if all the theaters start closing down! Get your act together, Hollywood!
I mean honestly I could go the rest of my life without watching a new movie, all of the ones I've seen in the last 10 years or so were terrible anyway.
I love going to the movies. When I was a kid my parents never took me and my brothers so as soon as I got a car and started making money I started going to the theaters. Now I go at least once a month sometimes twice
We just lost one of the biggest legends in film history (RIP Roger Corman), and I'd like to hope that at least a few people in Hollywood will really stop to reflect on how he made and produced movies. Were they *good* movies? Not necessarily, but they sure are a hell of a lot of fun. I'd certainly rather watch his version of Fantastic 4 than whatever Disney has planned, because they don't make fun movies anymore.
Another reason why films been struggling lately is because of mass media consolidation and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. And with the rise of the internet it's making legacy media obsolete.
The “crazy” bit is a significant issue for me: I try to see movies in theaters, but just about every time, someone is talking through the show: I even had someone making a FaceTime call the other week. And since the theaters are so understaffed and the kids left in charge lack the will to stand up to their objectionable customers, forget any chance of anything being done about it. Much as I love the big screen, it’s hard to justify paying the money when you can’t even enjoy the movie in peace.
I say Sonic 3 will smash Musfasa to ground but yes your right Hollywood is dying because they alienate fans and they lecture you and movies just Been meh too make remakes and reboots. Only disney product im interested is deadpool and wolverine.
Sonic 3 is literally the only movie I want to see this year and it doesn't even come out until the very end of this year. But my optimism for Sonic 3 is very cautious.
@@Rishi123456789Well Sonic 3 Is Made For Sonic Fans Because Of It's Gonna Had A Lot Elements From Sonic Adventure 2, Also I Heard Some Rumors That Amy Rose Could Be In The Movie.
Back in 2022, the grifters tried to hype up The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars by leaking their synopses. The meat of the leak was the plot of Secret Wars. Apparently the TVA rebel against Kang and rally a band of multiversal heroes (the Fox and Sony characters) to stop him. Tobey Maguire, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds were the main stars. Now, with Majors' dismissal, the threat of Kang was nipped in the bud with Loki controlling all the timelines now. That means these movies will be retooled like Hell. But I can still see Disney banking on the sheer amount of fanservice that is Robert Downey Jr, Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman meeting up with each other. That will get bums in seats.
I feel the opposite needs to be done to save movies. I think tickets price should be cut so that going to a movie becomes cheaper (in the moment alternative to streaming) snacks can stay expensive naturally. Not to mention this could encourage people to see multiple movies in a day like the good old days.
They need to allow people to rent out theatres. They started using them for business meetings which is great, but I think Netflix theatres will be a thing in the near future. Places people can gather with others and watch a movie or series together (as long as prices are reasonable). Add in some decent arcade cabinets and you have a million dollar idea.
Adding on to that. Watching things with strangers can be annoying and no one wants to deal with the dregs of society ruining their movie experience. Gatekeeping showings will get people to go out to theatres again.
I was just thinking of something like this a few months ago: get a bunch of friends and movie lovers together and start a private movie club (a real club with meetings and dues to help run things). Rent a screen to watch something good and then go for drinks after and critique the movie.
I priced this up to check out whether I could screen one of my son’s favorite movies for his birthday, and it came in at around $500. It’s just too much unless you can get a lot of people together.
Barbieheimer saved last Summer I think Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie À Deux, Moana 2, Wicked & Sonic The Hedgehog 3 are gonna be the biggest hits for theaters this year!
You know what’s funny about the movie theaters being in trouble due to lack of attendance? Ticket prices haven’t dropped. Supply and demand be damned I guess.
Thanks for this video and you cover most of the points. Here is an additional one: The TV sets at home are getting bigger and bigger. A friend of mine has just bought a 77‘ TV. In the last decades we had in average smaller tv sets and now we have home theater experiences. Secondly we have a drop in Projector prices and now you can purchase an entire 150‘ set for less than 5k. The movie quality is getting worse and prices are increasing continuously. With the economic downturn, and the other reasons, it makes no sense to go to the cinema. This is an unstoppable trend and only the cinemas with an outstanding service or the best price-service fit will survive.
The theaters should try and experiment and have certain cities lower the movie prices to making very little, based on the average foot traffic. Advertise that they are lowering prices in that city. See if they can make up money other ways. I was kind of thinking about this for disney theme parks, look at the average foot traffic from 1 year ago exactly and then lower the prices to making only $1-2 per person. See if that would increase foot traffic thereby possibly making more money.
@@TheBonebridger I am not a marketing person so I don't know how to do this, but I was thinking that in this case quantity may work better than getting few at a higher value.
Thank you for the video! It's sad to see movie theaters circling the drain. I remember when people were lamenting the death of the drive in movie theater. I had never been to one myself, but the town I had just moved to had had one for decades. The owners sold the land to real estate developers, and a new housing subdivision was built there. 1. Could the companies who own movie theaters can recoup some of their losses by selling their real estate? 2. Also, I don't understand the link between Hollywood and movie theaters. a) Are any of the theater chains owned by Hollywood studios? b) How much does a movie theater earn from a tremendous success like Barbie? c) Does the individual theater or regional manager of a chain have a choice as to how many screens each theater will devote to a movie? For example, say somebody incompetent in charge of a theater decided they were only going to show Barbie on one screen once a day. That would kind of be that theater's fault for not utilizing more screens, wouldn't it? i) Are they contractually obligated to show movies that are not attracting customers? 3. Can the theaters sue: a) Hollywood studios for making such poor movies that the customers won't attend theaters? (It might be difficult to prove this in court lol. Maybe if there were evidence that all the focus groups said this movie is terrible, but the studios refused to make the changes the focus group advised. Jennifer Salke of Amazon Studios admitted to stopping using focus groups because they were not providing the responses she wanted to hear. 🤣) b) And/or can they sue the studios because streaming is taking away their customers? 4. Can Hollywood re-release movies? I have a feeling if Star Wars OT and LOTR were shown in theaters, people would go and would bring their kids. All the studios must have tons of massively successful movies from the past that they could re-release for PROFIT. Imagine re-releasing the Disney animated and classic Pixar movies for an entirely new generation of kids? I can only imagine that the theaters would love this. Thank you for the video! How's Frank? 🙏😁🐻🎥🎞️🎬
The movie theater near me is charging $35 per movie for a ticket to the extended cut lord of the rings trilogy. Things are not well for them. That being said dune part 2 did so well because I watched it in theaters so many times.
Movie Theaters like Drive In Theaters will eventually become nostalgia. Last time for me at a theater was 2018. The only reason for me to attend any theater is for a Broadway Play, Ballet, or Concert.
Cineplex here at Chinook mall in Calgary just instituted a no public washroom policy. It's really pissing off guests. Because even if you don't have a ticket yet, or concessions. But will, but you have to go, oh say you're an elder who weakened uritary muscles (happens when we age), or a child, or disabled, You go rushing, but get chewed out by security. Then you decide to not come in, and ultimately we lose a customer. I work there, so I usually just let them in if they say "someone's in line" or I just finished a movie (ie from IMAX). If they're a kid like small kid, or an elder. However if someone looks like they're just here for shopping, or stoned out of their gorge, or just someone coming in for a quick pee and run. I tell them to use the Chapter's coffee shop downstairs. the mall closes on Sunday early, or stat holidays is Sunday hours, so I just let them go. I look around to see if there's a boss or something. Some of the other door staff as surly as they are have a no dice policy. I suspect that's who the 1 star reviews are refereing to. Normally we didn't care who used the washroom, but these past few years because of increase of unhoused stoners coming in for someplace warm to toke up their pipes. That soured the experience. Like there are some who just come in and pass out in the washroom. Anyways, this policy given the new batch of 1 star reviews is REALLY aggrivating the audience. Well that and the building resembles an old space station colony structure on it's last legs. The elevator and esclator is often off line, leaving the stairs for the less in shape or elders, or disabled to use (there are wheel chair ramps in the back, but you have to go around the huge Egpytian templed themed megalith building. Which already looks aged like some old rust ship.. It's doubtful that they can renovate the building with a VIP lounge (bed like seats, in person delivery of food, and alcohol, and a fancy dining lounge). I better use up all my Scene points before the place folds. It's sitting at 10 CAD, or about 8 USD. a share. A slight weak recovery since Covid, but flat lining under 10, likely with a moribund recovery. not quiet terminal. It appears as if this particular location won't get the renovations and slug on for another 10 years or so. before it's terminal decline. I should take some photos of the inside storage rooms and the graffitti declaring the facility a dump..
Even if they started making great movies again, it won’t change that because of out of control government spending and inflation people still won’t go.
The only thing that really interests me is Deadpool. That being said, there are so many stories out there that aren't being told and I wish that studios had the courage to tell them with competent screenwriters whose passion it is to tell a good story instead of what we have now. A group of people who tic boxes to pad their resumes.
@@momeloleather4827 I’m all for continuing a franchise if you’ve got a good story to tell but Hollywood mismanaged and destroyed too many franchises that I assume the worst. Also, I just want fresh and new ideas and I think a good avenue for that is adapting material that hasn’t gotten one in movies or tv.
I used to go once or twice a year, so I'm probably not a big loss to theatres, but the last couple of years I just can't justify the cost vs tha quality. If they all shut down I won't miss a beat.
I will be seeing Deadpool and Wolverine. The rest I will wait for streaming. Why spend 50+ for a movie when I pay way less for streaming? Maybe Superman Legacy next year. I don't know. Depends on the villain. Good job with the presentation.
The other thing to consider is that big chunks of the population now have 70 - 100inch screens with kick ass sound systems sitting at home.... Who wants to go out and sit in some dingey flea pit with absurdly overpriced snacks with half the audience rustling chip packets and the other half swiping through their phones..... When you can have all your creature comforts at home...... The writing was on the wall for theatres once COVID hit. Oh and with the fracturing and proliferation of streaming sites everyone is flocking back to Bit Torrent sites..... And all the best writers are now in TV.
Even if your favorite decade in film released in theaters for the first time, audiences would still only show up for event films and watch the rest at home. Habits have changed drastically. The theater needs another Harry Potter or MCU that "guarantees" attendance
Movie theaters would be a lot better if the movies were actually good and no one was allowed to talk or bring in their phone. Leave the damn phone at the door and put a landline or something on the wall for emergencies. This will turn off people not really invested in the movie.
I read an article that said over half of action/adventure movies (basically the blockbuster) in the past 10yrs was a sequel/prequel. Pathetic that "writers" (or the studio, doesn't matter which) cant come up with an original idea/script anymore.
Dont care about cinema anymore. I used to go every week or a few times a month depending on the movies. Its was my thing each week. Now, i dont care, i can wait, its only a few months till its streaming or bluray. Back in the day it could be a year or more before a movie was released on video after the cinema release. Now its a few months......so wait and get it on bluray, and save money, better experience watching it at home. I have no idea what kind of movie would get me in the cinema now.
I'd barely been to the cinema since 2019. Nothing that's interested me enough to bother. But this year there have been quite a few I've gone to watch (Godzilla Minus 1, Godzilla X Kong, Ghostbusters 4, Planet of the Apes). Though I have loads of free tickets so haven't actually paid.
Joker 2 will be interesting to see if it's successful or not. Many (myself included) can't stand musicals so it's instantly unwatchable for me. Also a lot of people went to see the first film expecting something very different from what they got so may not return for the sequel. Harley Quinn fatigue is a thing too.
Crazy expensive, have to deal with inconsiderate (often sick) people, crazy overblown big budgets with not much thought out into compelling stories all competing against the ever shrinking cost of (at minimum) decent TV/ sound systems. I don't think theaters are ever going to go away but probably eventually just become a special event type of thing with smaller theaters playing cult hits.
Like you said it’s just the quality. You have to be selective with going to the theaters. Every time I go it’s packed. Ppl still go. 80% of the movies just aren’t worth it. And not in demand. Who asked for a mad max prequel? Who asked for a twister sequel? Lol cmon. Horrible writing generic tropes and pushing agendas are the main issues too. The extremely high budgets aren’t helping either. The strike really didn’t change anything lol. And on top of tht. 2024 is just a slow yr. Hollywood basically told us the big titles are all coming in 2025.
I think movie theater experience is kinda change since the pandemic. I don't know cause whenever there's a blockbuster coming out,i feel lack of interest
There’s no reason to go. I can wait a couple months and see it on steaming. The only justification are movies with big special effects but they have to be good for that. Maybe they need less consultants so they can make cheaper movies that people actually want to see.
Or I just watch it in the cheap 2nd run cinema. Because they're competiting with the larger chains, they have to give exceptional service and be proactive with their marketing, more to the community.
I miss the violent drama. I went to see LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL and ABIGAIL in the theaters. The next movie I'm going to see is THE DEAD DON'T HURT with Viggio Mortinsen. He directed it as well.
Good video, I love movie theaters and would be sad to see them be less in numbers in the future. I also agree that theaters need to improve their equipment....no way should home be a better experience than at the theater. We need theaters! One point I will dispute is about streaming. Streaming is still coming out of it's infancy. Prices are going up and they are causing many such as myself who enjoyed having streaming services to say screw it this is not worth the constant price hikes and oh yeah now you want to ad commercials. Ahhh cable I thought I could leave you and now I want to come back. Now netflix has to resort to making a deal with the NFL to broadcast Christmas games. Look for streaming to consolidate. I don't see all of them making it....ie peacock and paramount +. I am still that guy who buys movies on 4K blu ray. People will soon learn they sold their soul for the "convenience" of streaming. "You will own nothing and be happy"
The demise of the mid budget movie is partially responsible for the lack of quality, cinema audiences are only paying to see the dazzling effects of big budget films in the cinema.
Hollywood needs to make fresh content with reasonable budgets; that is where fresh content comes from. These bloated sequels marinating in bad CGI are what's killing the industry. They need to drop prices, slow the release of films to streaming platforms, and make creative content that doesn't need a billion dollars to break even. Failing that, they will continue to make woke crap at inflated prices and kill the theaters for good.
I agree. Making movies with reasonable budgets that are like, half of 100 million dollars, and saving leftover budget money to market it well are an easier-said-than-done, but not hard to do strategy that has been tried and true for many singular hits of the 1980s and 1990s. No one has proven that making movies that way is straight up _outlawed_ in today's Hollywood climate, but original properties are also not a dead art form that has everyone giving up on it. These days, romantic comedies and other movie genres that do not seem like a big spectacle for the big screen are usually relegated to streaming services, since it is difficult for non-horror films with a low budget to compete with big blockbuster franchises, but there are some outliers who try to make it. IF is a light comedy-drama-fantasy film for PG audiences that has a budget of 110,000,000 dollars and sold up to 1,149,917 dollars above that amount in Canada and US, but it did not sell well for international markets and came up very short of breaking even with only 186,715,020 dollars total. I am very thankful that my mom and I watched this film at our local Penn Theater to be part of those ticket sales. IF did not come close to breaking even, but since it was John Krasinski's passion project and he already made tons of money from his A Quiet Place movie series, I am very sure that IF is not a huge financial loss for him when it made...84.87% of the money back necessary to break even. By contrast, The Beekeeper is a new action movie property for R audiences that turned a large profit because it was wise to only have a budget of 40,000,000 dollars. It made 26,220,535 more than its budget in Canada and US, and unlike IF, The Beekeeper performed awfully well in international markets to make a total of 152,720,535 dollars, so it was a big financial success that seems to have flown under the radar for premiering in January and making making almost four times its initial budget. The lesson to take away from my contrasting examples of mainstream films in 2024 is *not* that families with children who are below Cailey Fleming's age are not a profitable market for films that are mostly live-action. My point to make here is that Hollywood filmmakers can still do semi-original ideas with new properties that really sneak up on us compared to ongoing film franchises that announce production on sequels two years in advance, and they can be hits or misses depending on the sizes of their designated budgets. While The Beekeeper technically grossed less money than IF, it also turned out to be a more financially successful film because The Beekeeper made bigger profits in relation to its own budget since it was made for ~70 million dollars cheaper than IF. I think Hollywood should return to the roadshow extravaganzas of the 1960s. Make movies an event that you go with friends to enjoy. Tell epic stories with sweeping cinematography that can only truly be enjoyed on the big screen and don’t release the films to screaming for two years.
Sadly I will be giving my money to Disney bc Deadpool. Like a one night stand or rewatching She-Hulk...I will be regretting my decision afterwards 🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Theaters don't make movies, all they can do is ensure the audience gets thenbest viewing experience by getting rid of people on their phones. You can't save theaters by supporting mediocre movies because that's like saying to studios: please, sir, can I have some more...
