Is there racism in Barcelona? How is racism in Barcelona? This question I get asked quite frequently, so in this video I'0m going to talk about that, how living in Spain can affect you if you are from a different country.
As a sneak peak, I can say that we are not racists at all, but there are some things that you might want to consider before moving to Barcelona.

I am an Asian lady who has been living in Spain (including BCN) for several yrs. Spanish people (including Catalonian) think like "Asian = Chinese". I have experienced racism quite a lot. In the vid you say that BCN people are not really tourists-friendly sometimes, but its not related to racism. I don't really agree with that bcos BCN people are honestly more friedly with the Cocasian tourists, for example, English, German, Northern Europeans, etc. But people tend to treat Asians with less respect. Thats also racism. And I was asked several times on the street from guys like "China, gimme a massage". Thats disgusting and no respect. Also im not Chinese. When I told this to BCN people they always protect themselves like thats not racism thats just rude behaviour or the people do that probably are not from BCN, etc. But well, i lived the other EU countries previously but that kind of stuff never happened before... From my experience, compared to the other cities in Spain, BCN is indeed a bit different and open to the other races as its a multicultral cosmopolitan city. And I love Barcelona and people in general are nice. But racism is something that Spanish/Catalonian/Galician/Basque need to seriously think about.

To tell you the truth, racism in Barcelona makes me laugh. I find it funny that a country that has 1/20th GDP of the USA would have something stupid to say about skin color. I think racist might need to focus a bit more on actually being superior rather than pretending they are. I can't even think of the last product I've bought from Spain, but I'm reasonably sure my phone has African mined parts in it.

My experience observing interactions between Spaniards all over spain (including Barcelona) is that becase Spaniards are not fully white they tend to be more hateful of darker skinned people to make themselves feel Aryan, they tend to not want to serve darker skinned people, acknowledge them when they ask questions and be seen to interact frequently with them...regardless of their status and pedigree. It is similar to what Asians do.

Lmfao don't tell them that 😂. I'm Hispanic American and I also think that many don't look too white. Some look arab and it's because of the history that the country has. I work at a restaurant in the center of BCN the workers are from Philipine, Catalán, and South América, i'm from the Caribbean, the mánagers are spanish and sometimes they make racist jokes about asian and black costumers, most of this people are turist so they don't know what they are saying, It is disgusting ! One day i came to work and one of the manager, "the most racist of all of them", told me in front of other coworkers,': " look everyone, conguito is here" -That was rude and disrespectful, i always talk to him with respect, but here in Spain i don't know if this kind of behavior you can denounce. Racism is in everywhere, here there are lot of good people , i love Barcelona and this kind of people deserves to be treated badly sometime in their life so they see what it feels like to be discriminated.

Hello Adria! Really enjoying the videos on your channel, keep up the good work! I have a question regarding the people in Barcelona. I've read many articles and blogs which say that it is difficult for people from outside Barcelona (foreigners, especially) to make friends with the locals, even when they live there. They say that it is much easier to make friends in Madrid. What is your opinion on this?
@adria-official
@adria-official 7 лет назад
Hey Lee, the problem here in Barcelona is that we are sick of the tourists. There are many tourists compared to Madrid. That's probably why people here is less friendly to foreigners. But I disagree that we don't want to be friends with foreigns. Obviously you can find all kinds of people everywhere in the world but for example, myself and me have no problem on being friends with foreigns. Another problem you'll find here is that the English level is very low, so that might make it difficult for you to make new friends if they don't speak English. But that happens here and in Madrid. I hope it helps :)
@leed.4859
@leed.4859 7 лет назад
I see! Yes I can imagine it must be annoying being surrounded by thousands of tourists every day, many of whom make a mess of the streets and don't speak a word of Spanish/Catalan. Especially as Barcelona is quite small like you said in another video. Hopefully the government will find a way to bring the number of tourists down to a more reasonable amount. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
@adria-official
@adria-official 7 лет назад
yes, too many tourists and it's mixed. Some of them are good quality tourism while others aren't. The problem is that we have to deal with all kinds of stuff, like for example in this video I posted: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KVwtQLH8Gzo.html That happens every morning in the Barcelona beach. Other problems like Ramblas, or Sagrada Familia is that there are so many tourists that is hard for people living there to actually walk on the streets. Also regular shops had to close due to raise of rents and now it's full of souvenir shops and crap for tourists. Same for restaurants, all tourist traps and nothing for locals in those areas. Is not a problem if you are not from there, as a local you just avoid going there (unless you want to see tourists) but there is people who have lived all their life there and now they can't peacefully live there anymore...

The US has always had issues with race and prejudice. With the recent presidential election things may appear to have gotten "worse", but in actuality these issues are just being given more media attention. Hey CJ, thanks for your translation, ladder!! How I could forget about that hahaha You'll be safe here in Barcelona, just learn some Spanish and you'll be treated almost like a local (you can even learn Catalan for free as the Catalan government pays that for you), but I don't really recommend learning Catalan as it's basically useless outside of Catalunya and 100% of people who speaks Catalan also speaks Spanish (we learn both languages in school). Anyway, back to your question. Uber is banned in Barcelona and I'm not happy about that, but I can't do anything about it :( My opinion about Airbnb? I'll create a video next week talking about that. I am an Asian American male who lived in Barcelona for a month. I was a professor doing research and lived in a residential district. People were not racist to me. I was a member of Couchsurfing for social reasons--meet ups--and I did notice that people had some stereotypes about me...but they were not racist. One girl who was from Spain that I met on Couchsurfing was Chinese from Spain. But everybody kept assuming that she was from China...and I could tell that it was a little annoying for her...but there wasn't anything ass-hole-y. She had to make sure to correct them--not directly--but by speaking her perfect regional Spanish. I see how that can be tiring. What I did notice was that there was a racial hierarchy of dark skinned workers from former colonies who did all the little jobs that were shitty. And I did notice that there was a language discrimination: Castellano accent was considered superior to Latino accent. And sometimes people would act like my Mexican accent was a joke. This is still not anything to call racist. I actually felt a little more racism in Madrid.

Racism is definitely a hard topic but I honestly appreciate your honesty. My family is from the country of Puerto Rico but I was raised in the states. My father often say racist things about Dominican people because he said they're ruining the island of Puerto Rico. He claims they've brought crime and prostitution. It's hard for me to relate because in the States there have been much racism towards Latino people from Anglos, so ALL Latino people often link together. The younger generation of Latinos have a more diverse group of friends vs the older generation. On that note lol my husband and I have talked about moving to Spain. So I guess it's good to know where as stand as Americans. I recently found out that I am 74% Spanish and Portugal. My husband was 60% Spanish. So, in some weird way we want to connect and learn about our Spanish side. Thought the best way to do that would be by moving there. Was hoping my husband can find a job on the U.S military base there after he retires.

Once you know and understand people and their culture, you have an advantage to business, relationships, and global networking. Unfortunately, I (a gorgeous black lady) and a very nice white lady I met in Madrid were encountered by very odd and egregious racism. As if we were in a land that never saw non Spaniards and that they were being attacked. Like someone who has been blind for a long time, loved it, and is being forced to see other beautiful people. Yes, it can tank an economy but some people, even Africans in Africa, don’t want to see anyone but themselves. If you live in a place like this, please leave!!! Check the facts. Spain´s education system is abysmal. A third of students don´t even complete high school and standards are very poor. @@angelmoreno6577

How can u tell someone is from Morocco or Romania? Many Moroccans look like Italian, Greek, or Turkish. Many Romanians look Russian or Easter European.
@CC-er4cd
@CC-er4cd 2 года назад
@ashvoj When you wanna do race lessons you must be educated Italians and Greeks are white and Europeans, moroccans can look only Turkish and other levantine folks cause they're arabs not white they don't look Europeans cause they're not. Romanians look northern spaniards cause the ancestors of northern spaniards came from central europe especially from romania and bulgaria they look the typical stereotype of white spaniards black-brown hair and eyes, absolutely NOT russians who have almond shaped eyes, high cheekbones, large flat face and round nose. Probably you are a non European to say it you're not able to spot races and especially Europeans.

Adria, I think you need to give yourself and Barcelona a little more credit. What you're explaining seems like a case of prejudice and not racism. It's not that people from Barcelona feel superior to those from Morocco and Romania, but rather you're all struggling with the perception that all people from Morocco and Romania are there to steal and commit crimes, which unfortunately is based on previous experiences and is not a conclusion solely based on their genetic make up.

Yes I agree with you, it's the prejudices that lead to a bit of racism

Very good observation. Everything is called racism, but racism is a feeling of superiority. In some cases, they have suffered millions of robberies of people from another country ... then it is only "defense" or "fear"

Roman Darius if you go there or any black majority country as a white person you’ll be treated as a king that’s why you were able to enslave and trade people but black people haven’t learned from their past mistakes
