I lived in Europe and in Iceland and loved life there! I didn't sit there waiting or expecting racism. I've heard stories, took it with a grain of salt and continued on with life. I didn't have any negative experiences and it is not to say that their isn't any it's just a lot of ignorance, exposure to American racism and foolishness. In Iceland I was automatically talked to in Icelandic and people staring. I'm in a country where it's an island of Scandinavians. But I was treated like family by the people I befriended (I had places to crash at and other mothers lol). Ignorance and fear is what lies beneath racism.

No black people in major TV or Films hardly any black people on TV in general or to represent the country unless it's football. Unarmed black men shot by the police five times the American rate. A British paper said its actually more and that figure is underestimated. I even know white people from England who have been to Brazil and say the black people are treated like dirt. I was speaking to a mixed Brazillian who lives in England he said they are racist as well that's why he moved to England or Europe to get ahead.

Somewhere Always I'm glad you made that video because I watched other testimonies of Black people who lived in Spain and they were in Madrid and Barcelona ,so I was wondering about other places like Malaga Seville , Valencia and I am glad to learn that Malaga, Andalucia are more open-minded and welcoming to Black people .... It would seem like the South of Spain is more open as opposed to the United States where the South seems to be more racist than the North or is it just a false notion? shazz286 ... because race is actually *not* at all a scientific fact; it is however a very real & deep social reality, created to justify the transatlantic slave trade & other fuckery of false human superiority, as a result of the disturbing persistence of the farce, it is now understandably an identity to many which often varies culturally (along with other generational effects).

I'm an American of Puerto Rican and Cuban/Canary Island background, I was in Southern Spain in the 1980's while in the US Navy. I had no issues. People were cool. No problems. I'm have very Latin features and my Spanish has a pronounced Cuban accent. And when I spoke with Spaniards and they inquired about me I'd chat and tell them my background. They were cool with it. Now, was it because it was a different time, 1980's, that I was a US serviceman or my heritage. I believe people got along better, in general in the 1980's, we have US military bases in Spain and the US had very good relations with Spain, I had money in my pocket, and also the situation of Puerto Rico/Cuban regarding them being the last Spanish Colonies (Provincias Ultramar)has a different effect on the Spanish. Remember they were taken in a WAR. Many Spanish still feel the sting of losing their empire. Also, I know Black/Mulato Cubans who LOVE Spain. I haven't been to Spain or Europe in quite a few years. I would say this is a product of economics. The pie has gotten smaller.Espero q Espan~a pueda recuperar su economia. Viva Espan~a

Idk why are people so pissed off! In Spanish "Negro" is just the name of a color. In America everytime you refer to someone you don't know you probably would say "that tall guy over there" or "the blond one". A white person is called "Blanco" and a black person is called "Negro". If Americans took the word "negro" to use it the wrong way it's not Spain's fault. My boyfriend is black and when we point someone to know who are we talking about if that person is black he would say "el negro" like any other person would. It would be racist if you said something wrong about it or add an insult like "puto negro" that's racist. But the word black alone just means black. Also "moreno" can be anybody with darker skin than pale.
@sharrifbey707

Luna Ariyadi - Moreno means Moor; lineage of all melanin rich people. Spain during the inquisition took over Al Andalusia which it was called before the defeat of the Moors at Granada.
@LuNa7xd
@LuNa7xd 7 лет назад
Moreno doesn't mean moor, MORO means moor and is an offensive word. Moreno means "darker than white" I'm morena, if you see me outside you would call me morena, but I'm not African or from the North of Africa. Indonesian people are morenos, South American people are morenos. In history class we have always learned people who conquered the South of Spain were called "moros" not "morenos" because a lot of people from different ethnicities can be called moreno.
@LuNa7xd
@LuNa7xd 7 лет назад
I'm not complaining about you, I'm generalizing people who don't fully know the meaning of some words and might have cultural shocks because of it. A person with African origins here are called "Africanos", "negros" or "personas de color". In the US you call an Afroamerican "black" right? here is the same thing. A white person is called white and a black person is called black, it is not racist, it is not meant to be an offensive word, it is in English but not in Spanish. Here even black people call "negro" to other black people, everybody does. Just like someone would call me "morena" and someone would call a white person "blanco". And if you don't like it tell people how would you like to be called instead and comprehensive people will understand.
@sharrifbey707
@sharrifbey707 7 лет назад
Black, and white being used to classify people for supremacy purposes came from Alfred Blumenbach, and Karolus Lineaus; its called a caste system, get it. You're right peoples all over the world that are deeply melanin enriched are also Moors, hence Moreno. Black being a nation of people doesn't exist, nor white. What people have been taught to use is connotative linguistics, instead of denotative. Its about knowing, not feelings.

I just want to say something, I'm spanish, and there aren't a lot of black people here, like, I never had any black person in my class, ever. So I think when US citizens talk about the looks they give them for being black, it's not racist, it's just that they aren't use to see black people. The only black people we are use to see are the ones getting in illegal from Morocco. So I wouldn't take it too personal. Spanish people aren't racist, i would say if they were, but they aren't.

You mentioned you have been living in Spain for 15 months and have not faced any racism, but I just have to say somethings because I was born there, my mother has lived there for 20 years and my other family members have been there for around 15 years. My story: In Spain, because I was black and Spanish, people would tell me to go back to my country. Even though I told them I was born there, they made me ethnicitially confused. I used to get verbally and physically bullied for being black. I would pee in my pants whenever I got back home because in the school washrooms, there were always girls skipping class. Whenever I went to use the washroom, they would pull on my braids (which left me with hair damage I still have today), spit on me, hit me, and call me café negro (black coffee). Those were only few of things I and my siblings went through every day, remember, ONLY A FEW, there is a lot more but I just want to mention the most repetitive and hurtful ones. Whenever we went out we would get dirty looks and people would say shit about us because they thought we didn't understand. We got sued because when we went to the mail store at the mall, we opened someone else's package by mistake. We apologized but they accused my siblings and I of insulting the woman that sued us. They told our parents to take us black to where we came from and caused a scene at the mall. On our way to school in the morning we would see black people getting yelled at by Spanish Caucasian people, they would accuse us of the crisis happening in Valencia. Even though my siblings and I were born there, we were required to get Nigerian documents to apply for a passport and nationality. Black people could only get the worst jobs, but by that I don't mean working at macdonald's, cause macd's is WAY better that all the other jobs offered to us. We would work at butcheries, slicing meat in a small room, cleaning toilets, and cleaning the street, things like that. Once, my older brother and I got chased home because my bro sat on a caucasian boy's chair. He recruited his brother and a 30 year old transformer lookin like dude. Thankfully we met their aunt while fleeing, and she kept us safe, that goes to show not all spanish-caucasian people are racist. In fact, there are lots of loving people, but the bad ones outnumber them. - All this things mentioned are about 15% to say the most of the things that we suffered while living in Spain. In conclusion, not all Spanish people are racist but if you are black and still want to live in Europe, I recomend you live in countries such as Italy, France and Germany, but don't be discouraged to visit Spain! It is a gorgeous country with beautiful people and places!. Thank you for reading my story, muchísimás gracias y espero get tengas un día genial! Spain being a Catholic country has never had that feeling of being the "chosen one" like Jews and protestants do. I think that fact together with the racial mixture that exists in this amazing country (moorish, jewish, european, native american, african...) make it very hard to convince some "whites" that they are superior like you can see in protestant and racially uniform countries.

I'm 26, and I'm from the north of Spain. The first time I saw a black guy in real life inside Spain was aprox. with 12/13 y/o. In general in countries where there has not been much "different color inmigration" in the past centuries, do not have that strong concept of race. I use to travel and that shocks me, when for example you have to feel a form and mark your race.

I am from the Netherlands and the blackface thing has really blown up here in years past as well. There is one party in the year (Sinterklaas, in December) when a large part of the characters are in black face. Now I will admit that's insensitive and that we should listen to residents who say it makes them feel uncomfortable. However, as a kid I LOVED these characters: they were fun, a lot of them were acrobatic, they brought sweets and they had a really happy role to play. I am really happy to hear you describe the Spanish tradition with such care not to read into it too much. Some people trying to start this discussion will come at it with an attitude of: everyone involved in this party is racist. Not only are people's backs immediately up when you call them racist, but I also don't think it's true. Knowing more than I did as a kid I can acknowledge the racial under- (and over)tones in this tradition and I think we should change it so that everyone can enjoy it. But enjoying it as a kid for it being fun, bubbly and happy does not make me racist. Maybe in a few years the Spaniards will also change their Three Kings tradition because they realize the connotation it has for other people.

I do feel like in europe, at least Spain and Portugal which are the realities I know best, we view race in a very different way than americans do.. Sometimes stuff we say or do may be perceived as racist (as it would in the us) but we're not in the same social context and it really isn't meant as racist.

Málaga is very focused on turism. People say that spanish people from the south is les racist than spainish people from the north. Also, Andalucía is more "arabic" than other spanish cities. In addition, Andalucia is more used to immigrants. Andalucía "receives" arabs (because Ceuta and Melilla "belongs" to Spain) and "black" people (ilegal immigrants above all).
@DuskSunDawn
@DuskSunDawn 7 лет назад
Well, spanish people don't refer to themselves as "white" (blancos"). They refer to themselves as latins (latinos) or europeans ("europeos"). The social identity of spainish people is 1º) being from in Spain 2º) belonging to a latin country and having the latin culture 3º) belonging to catholic culture (if you don't include "catholic culture" inside the concept of "latin culture"). However, they are used to describe people using worrds like "árabes" (arabs), gitanos (spanish gipsies), gitano del este (easthern gipsies), "negros" (blacks). Please notice that sometimes "negro"(black) is seen as a sign of racism. Some people prefer to call them "africanos"( african people").
@DuskSunDawn
@DuskSunDawn 7 лет назад
About "morena". "Morena" is usually means "someone who has black hair". However, "morena" also means "someone who has tanned skin". They describe physical appearance, not race. For example, some spanish people say "En América Latina las personas tienen una piel mas morena""("In Latin America people have darker skin tone").
@DuskSunDawn

The "black face"...if you are talking about "los reyes magos" (the thee mage kings) the reason is king Baltazar is black. It could be impersonated by a "black" person but most of them are "white". However, we have a true "black" king Baltazar in Spain.

My boyfriend is from Spain and the stares we got when recently visiting Valencia made me feel super uncomfortable... I had one girl turn her chair around in a restaurant just to stare at me whilst we were eating our meal. Not to mention the whole queue in Zara in Alicante just full blown staring whilst I was waiting to pay like I'm some kind of alien. So I can relate I've had good and bad experiences now however there something I love so much about the culture and language!

Mikel Arana Etxarri I would like to explain why Black people are sensitive to White people painting their faces black. It goes back to a time in America- the Jim Crow era where in theater plays, a White actor would use black paint face to portray a Black person in a very grotesque way, they would exaggerate the size of the lips, nose and make the eyes appear bigger as a way to mock Black people.

Hi! I'm from Barcelona and in my opinion, formed by my personal experiences of course, there IS racism in my city, and by that I mean quite a lot of racism, but it may not be expressed the same way than it is in USA. Most of it goes against southamerican people, since there have been a lot of inmigration from there in the past years, and I think it may be caused by the cultural shock between our culture and their culture. I must add, and it's quite significative, that this racism is found usually in people with a poor cultural level, who can't see or refuse to see the bigger picture. Anyway, just my opinion, thank you for visiting our country and cheers!

HI Nice video! Sorry about my english. You nailed it. Spain is an old empire and there are spanish people who looks arab, nordic, caucasian or whatever some hundred years ago. You can have spaniard friends who look arabs and other nordic blue eyed . Spanish people don´t make racial differences for this.... So when a spaniard tell you are tanned or "morena" instead black he isn´t offensive. Only he´s intending integrate you in his Spanish race mentality. In Spain There isn´t the racial concept White, black that maybe could be in USA. But....In the other hand In Spain is looked down socially the people who doesn´t interact with spanish people... so exclusive groups really are a bit looked down. I mean retired nordic people who live here and don´t learn the language and only have nordic friends .... or some emigrants. Foreigners usually think it could be racist, I think it is a bit of xenophobia. Emigrants come here only 15 years ago and people are not used to see them mostly old spanish people. :-)

+Reciosvillacarriedo your English is great! Yeah I understand some of the difficulties Spain faces in a modern society. I don't give them a pass because, we live in a global world. Even if they haven't encountered Africans or other blacks. They know they exist and can learn about different cultures. Even people in Andalucia don't fully acknowledge the blackness of Moors. So it's a bit of prejudice mixed with xenophobia IMO.
@Alejojojo6
@Alejojojo6 8 лет назад
+Reciosvillacarriedo I completely agree with you. We spaniards are not homogenously looking society so we dont think in terms of race. One of my friends is completely "Moreno" and Im very nordic looking (people always think Im from Northern Europe or a foreigner even), and we where asked once how come if we where from the same country we looked so different. So we are used to colors. For many as long as you speak Castillian spanish pretty good you would be considered spanish. I think we dislike foreigners who live a parallel existence in Spain and dont integrate with other spaniards etc.. And i dont consider that a bad thing. You live in Spain why not live among spaniards. You still can have diversity integrating. I also think that if there is racism or discrimination is mainly because of social stigma to a community. For example Chinese are labelled as hard working, always thinking about money, paranoid etc.. Blacks, specially from Africa not from LA or North Am (Those are even considered cool), are usually associated with poor living conditions and crime, just because you see some selling illegally on the streets or have a higher criminality rate. (Many come through gibraltar). Same with gypsies, they are always associated with doing illegal things so they all would get automatically stygmatized and people would always be carefull around them unconciously. Its not about color but about experiences with dealing with some communities (and sadly we put all in the same bag). Also depends on your status. I think that higher classes are racist while low or popular classes are not racist at all and have friends from different etnic backgrounds.
@teegraciela1065
@teegraciela1065 8 лет назад
+Alejojojo6 I disagree. I think Africans and "gypsies" are judged BECAUSE of their color. I have Japanese friends that are refered to and treated as "chino" simply because of how they look. Not because of what they've done.
@teegraciela1065
@teegraciela1065 8 лет назад
+Alejojojo6 but despite most of the Asians being Chinese treating people you KNOW are Japanese like you would Chinese proves my point. It's not just about a culture and their experience in Spain. It's about what people visibly see.
@Alejojojo6
@Alejojojo6 8 лет назад
+SomewhereAlways Tee But you are generalising. Not every single person in Spain is like that nor that means that the whole society threats them like that. Usually I hate sentences like (all) Spanish this.. (all) Asians... (all) Gays, etc We cant put all people in the same box because of a Nationality or a race or whatever. There is a huge difference on people and how they act. Its strange to me to hear that they threat Japanese as Chinese. Those people again are too ignorant to differentiate a Japanese from a Chinese. Usually when they know someone is Japanese they have a different attitude. Some people have a bad attitude towards a community out of bad experiences with them. Chinese where loved when they came but most people but after they started to get more hate from people out of the actions they did (like competence etc..) How hurtfull stereotypes are... :(

I'm happy that you felt that Spain is not a racist country. I'm an Andalusian living in London and I still don't get used to answer the typical race, religion, sex, illness... questions in a job application. I consider these questions a meddling into my private life, which has nothing to do with me applying for a job or whatever you want. I think that all of these issues belong to the Anglo culture, not to mine. We call black people "negro" and it doesn't have a negative meaning, but many people also use "moreno" to be more political correct, but I think it's an influence from the Anglo culture. Spain never traded with black people, it was forbidden, meanwhile other countries like Portugal, Britain, Netherlands... did. If you have a look to the Hispanic America, most of the population are mixed with European and native American roots. We've got different values in this matter, which I consider better than other cultures.

There's a problem here in Spain: we didn't seen black people until a few years ago, maybe 10 or 20 years, and people isn't used to it yet (which doesn't give them any excuses, may I say). I'm a young woman, I live in Almeria (near Malaga!), and I'm used to seeing different kind of people. I'm not bothered by someone's skin, race, nacionality, religion, sexual or gender condition. But unfortunatly older people, and yet people with my age (25yo) are still REALLY racist, homophobic, xenophobic, and so on. The world would be a better place if we only judged people by what their moral values are, by what defines them as a person. PS: I hope two things. I think In America races are more compartimented because of its history. First there were natives, then came the europeans (white), who brought slaves (black). Even when there is some mixing of races this distinction is very specific. In Spain otherwise, we spaniards are a mix of races ourselves: From the first Iberian tribes to Greeks, Romans, Fenicians, Moors, Vikings, Caeltics, Gipsys, Cartaginians... We are a mix and even as white people, there's a difference between southern europeans (basically the mediterranians: southern french, spanish, portuguese, italian and greek, with predominantly dark hair and slightly darker skin) and northern europeans (scandinavians, germanic or anglosaxons

Hello SomewhereAlways, in the Latino community, negra or negro is used as a term of endearment which involves all shades of Latinos. So when I heard you say that they called you negra or Morena, I figured they meant it as a term of endearment. What do you think?
@NeccoWecco
@NeccoWecco 8 лет назад
You're called morena because you aren't as dark toned as many people who come from africa. It is racism, since you are being singled out for your skin tone, but it isnt necessarily mean they were treating it negatively. I'm a white foreigner in Spain and I have been treated both rudely (being called guiri) and others who treat me as everyone else in the community. I think, just as you stated, people often use words like negra, morena, guiri in a context that they think is non-offensive, but fail to realise that it is inherently offensive.
@moonbeeps

Thats not racism, racism is believing that the other race is inferior than yours. Calling someone morena that is actually negra, isnt racism. Calling someone guiri is like saying "look, a north european". So no... racism is a whole other thing.

Nappy is not bad; unless you have issues with the texture of nappy hair since lots of Black hair is nappy. 2) We know Black people are not black; we are just called Black just like Whites are called White when they are not white either, but they seldom get upset being called White. Therefore, calling you Black is not racist. (I spent an academic year in Salamanca teaching advanced English composition in case you need to know my bona fides.)

Omg thank you I’m originally from Granada which is also in the south people some people who have never even been here will swear we are white supremacist and the ones that have visited here would just stereotype the whole country as racist based on their experience with a few people I’ll say probably 5% maybe of Spain is racist Spain is a diverse country Latinos from Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru I’m sure others from other Latin countries but these are the ones I met who came Latinos make up 25% of the country and black people from African countries & USA come here they make up 10% of the country it’s really a diverse country we love all people regardless of your race

Historically there are no blacks in Spain as opposed to the U.S. It is sad but it was us Spaniards, along with the English and the Portuguese, who brought African slaves to America, and did not bring the here (unless the English). That is why there is nothing as a racial classification of adjectives: negro can mean black as well as a racist insult depending on who has said it, his intention, the words going with it (we add 'de mierda' or 'puto/a' just as in English 'fucking', 'freaking'... and so on)... and it is generally easy to tell apart whether it is an insult or not if you've got ears and eyes. This being said, Spanish society is not racist at all compared to the American. Apart from the morenita thing which, definitely sounds inappropriate but it is not racism, it is more of a way to address a young girl who happens to be black (I cannot imagine anyone calling Obama morenito). Something horrible about out society is classism, it is changing but still there is a lot to do. And that is what happened to you in Lavapiés, classism and misunderstanding between both Spaniards and African immigrants. By the way, Baltasar is one of the Three Wise Men, a biblical myth: three kings from the East came to Belem to give to the baby Jesus Christ some gifts on 6th January. In Spain, it is them who traditionally brought the gifts in Christmas. Now we also celebrate Santa. And traditionally we have this great Christmas parades on 5th January in which the three kings throw sweet to the people... and Baltasar is usually characterized by a white man for two possible reasons: 1.The black population in a lot of Spanish town (small ones) is zero. Even in Madrid or Barcelona it was very little some 15 years ago. 2. In many places it is a honor to be one of the kings in the parade, it does not matter if you are black or not, if you are given that honor and the only vacant is Baltasar, you paint your face black.

I´m Dominican, my family is very diversy... In my home, we all have different skin tones, I have light skin and straight hair sisters and a brother, and black with afro hair sisters and brother... I´m also a black with afro hair... My parents call me "negra", my best friend and she has white skin and she calls me "morena", "negra" and I don´t mind because I know she´s not saying it in a bad way, some guys when they are flirting with me they call me "Negra" and obviesly is not racism... I think this words ain´t an issue until we become it into one. Is not the same to call a person "negra/o" that say "Ese/a negro/a" ... I mean the word by itself is hurtless.... You have to listen the all sentences or evaluate the all context of a conversation to judge the word as a racist instrument. Good bless you all, and remember that we are the same under our skins.

We arent racist. For us we say black ONLY when we have no other way to describe a person. It is usually our last tool in a pocket. Say someone wants to talk to you, and I dont know your name or anything that can help me identify you from others. I would say to that someone, "es la chica morena right over there". We never use it to separate race. Reason why some black people are not called black in spain is because most of the people tend to be brown. So we would rather say the correct color rather than black, in those cases, it would be insulting depending on the context. I for example have tanned skin, not black, not brown, just tanned. In Spanish, the word "tan" is moreno. "im getting a tan" = "me estoy poniendo moreno". Moreno is the in between. Between the super white and brown. Its got nothing to do with race. If we were to mention race and use it negatively, we go straight for country of origen as a way to attack. The whole black face thing. It is only a thing in pueblos that are in the middle of freaking nowhere. We do it most during Christmas when celebrating the three wise men (los reyes magos), and Baltasar is black. Back in the day not a single black person would volunteer to be Baltasar, so we used black face. In addition those creepy kkk looking robes that we have during Semana Santa, yeah that was a thing way before the kkk was a thing. The KKK tainted the symbology of what the robe originally standed for.

Many people in Spain don't like people who are not spanish and they don't like the spanish accent from any other countries. They may tolerate it but they don't like it so much. It is not so much about the colour of the skin.

Malaga is in the South. The people are warmer there than in the North. Also, you're closer to Africa, so you see more Black people and Africans there, not a big deal. But I love Spain! However every damn time I fly through Madrid airport they flag me and any other Black ppl on my flight for additional security. Even though I tend to fly Business Class. :-) So i think it's about where you go in Spain.

I have spent a lot of time in Spain in the last 3 years. I noticed it is a very homogenous society with little racial diversity. It reminds me of American cities in this regard where there is also little diversity evident - just a couple American subcultures. Probably these things jump out at me because I live in an incredibly diverse city (Toronto) where no group stands out because there are so many groups. It was interesting hearing your observations from a point ov view I cannot have.I think the Spanish people are great and warm to everyone. I imagine you would have similar experences in many countries - although cultural descrimination exists in many places, the Black/White thing is predominantly a thing in the USA.

+Robert Britton it's very interesting because a lot of people genuinely believe that Black/White is American phenomenon. America just has a more prevalent history of it because slavery took place on our soil vs colonialism. The initial concepts of race were actually European theories. You should check out the "strolling" series. It talks to people all over the diaspora. Feeling less undervalued and systematic racism isn't an american thing. So many unifying themes from the African diaspora all over the world ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JCubkwdpwr8.html

Robert Britton europe dosent and shouldn't have diversity, if immigrants come they at maximum CANNOT be over 5% of the total population or else it will turn into a (no offense) shit hole with 3rd world people's bringing their 3rd world views to the country. We can already see that in the U.K., France, and Germany which is really sad. America can have diversity, but not Europe, it's not good for the culture.
@RobertsfunWords
@RobertsfunWords 7 лет назад
You sound a bit biased. First, the USA is not very diverse in one sense. It is almost entirely 3 cultures. In my city in Canada we have so many cultures that blacks are merely 1 of 20 and don't stand out much. Actually with the exception of French/British origins, which is not a racial divide, we simply have no 2 large cultural communities anywhere. Second, there really is only one race, and we all are ex-pats from Africa if you go back to origins.
@RobertsfunWords
@RobertsfunWords 7 лет назад
In fact, the entire human race is a diaspora from Africa. Many people have not learned this or conveniently ignore it. Ask any anthropologist. Many countries have "racial" tensions that are serious - the USA is a bit unique in the focus on 3 major "races", and the way both blacks and Hispanics have been and are treated. There are many countries of all colours where discrimination is equal or worse even if the physical traits are almost identical. Hence the Yugoslavia's, Pakistan's and South Sudan's of the world. You see white people. I see humans that lost their pigmentation after moving north from Africa. I think of the Neanderthals as the last separate human race. The rest of us are one race and should start behaving that way..

Hello Robert Britton, I am a Black woman who went to live in the US for 20 years in the South and I can certainly attest to the deep racism there and I finally had enough and came back to live in Montreal. Not to say that everything is all fine and dandy because there's racism here as well but I haven't experienced it as much as I have in the US. But to say that this racial issue between Black and White is mostly in the US, I'm not sure I would agree with that because I have friends in France who experience intense racism similar to what happens in the States

Just came across your video. 29 years living in Spain. Never had an issue outside of a football match where colour is concerned and standing in line one day in a bakery when a Spanish lady pushed in and I opened my mouth! I gave her some words, and she replied with. barrage of racist vocab to which I laughed Nah. Black Americans, ignore what colour you are and get involved! Too much emphasis has been put on colour and it seems to be from Afro Americans rather than Anglo Blacks ( if that’s the operative word...). Even the Africans I have come to know over the years, from Senegal, Cameroon and Nigeria do not give much importance to their colour unless they are being harassed by the locals. And they give it back too! If there is racism here, and there most certainly is, like everywhere, it is hidden... You know what is what when you try to, in some cases walk around a store and get followed...You try to do official business, and you can see that not being Spanish can be an obstacle... Me? I use my Spanish influences to get me where I want, and open doors! It’s the done thing here...Enchufes. Since Roman times it’s been happening! Nothing new. Black people: Go with the flow, get up, get in to it...Get involved!!! You’ll make more friends that way. Believe! Truth be told, until BLM was a popular thing, I never gave it much thought that colour could be an issue in Spain. And I am un moreno! Now to watch part two of your Black in Spain video. Peace!

I'm Spanish and we call black people negros/as and black people call themselves like that as well not only here but also in Latinoamérica. I do the same and even if they call you "negrita" is kind of cute, I don't think it is negative as well as calling white a white girl is not. Simply because there is nothing wrong in being black or white, it's just beautiful that human beings come in different shades and shapes. By the way in from Granada and I appreciate that you enjoyed Andalucía 👍 👋

I’m Spanish, I’m 25 and I met a black person for the first time at the age of 12. From 2005 to 2008 there was a ton of immigration of Africans that came to the peninsula. But before that it was almost impossible that you knew any black people. That’s why we paint our face black and we are still curious about black people. It’s just kind of new to us.
