Your videos are always informative but this one has some inaccuracies Transport Canada only uses your bill of sale to transfer registration to the new vessel in your name. Transport Canada does not evaluate boats and does not have a blue book. Transport Canada is federal and they only notify the provincial treasurer that you have made a transaction but they do not forward the bill of sale that you submitted to them. Service Ontario (or your privince) will send you a request for information asking the amount you paid and if you paid tax on this transaction and if so, who you paid the tax to. You can then go to service Ontario (or your province) with the request for information form and your bill of sale and pay your HST

Hi Len. I have a interesting issue that you may be able to shed some light on. I am a NewZealand citizen, My wife is a Canadian Citizen. We built a 60ft sail boat in NZ and launched in 2012. We have never registered the vessel any where. We are trying to get Canadian Registration. They have come back asking for a Bill OF Sale, which of cause we don’t have as we built the boat ourselves, with some help from the designer. They also want a Tonnage cert and sent us a list of Surveyors from Canada as they wont accept a Cert from another country. This seems strange as it is a International tonnage Certificate. ( ships from other country’s go to Canada from all over the world, No problem. We will endeavour to engage a Canadian Surveyor for the Cert. Also would we have any Canadian Tax Implications if we never come to Canada. Our plan is to Cruise the South Pacific. We live full time on the Boat. Trust this makes sence and look forward to any advice you can offer. Best regards Bev/ Graeme Walker.

I thought you pay the federal portion and the rest to amount to 13% is recreational vehicle tax. Either way it’s 13%. I love the way the used boats keep getting taxed over and over every time it changes hands. Also if you buy a fixer upper you can appeal the blue book value .....

Eileen, yes you are correct about being able to appeal it.

over and over just like the cars. Canadian hst at full rate on used boat/car is a robery, over and over

If I sale a boat privately to someone for 24.000.00 it is my own boat who as to pay for the taxes on it and when?

For a private sale in Ontario you pay the HST at Service Ontario. Transport Canada doesn't bill you or collect it. Service Ontario audits all transactions that run through the Transport Canada boat licensing system and end up sending out bills for unpaid HST if the buyer doesn't willingly go into a service Ontario location to pay their taxes owed.

Hi Len, Thank you for putting this video together, great work. I'm thinking about buying a used sail boat. Is it possible to see what the previous sales price was of a particular boat. I know it was purchased a few years ago and now it is for sale once again. Is there an official database I can tap into? I have the hull number. Thanks.

Michael, no there is no official database unfortunately. You would need to dig and find previous owners through them

I'm curious if tax is only owing on boat and I buy with trailer, does the tax get removed from the trailer portion or am I dreaming?
@boatinglessons
@boatinglessons 2 года назад
In almost all provinces and states that I aware of, tax is owed on the trailer also

I purchased a boat at an Online Auction and will be bringing it across the border in the next couple of days I understand the 13% HST, but have also seen a luxury tax applies to select vessels that have a taxable amount over $250,000 my boat cost 23,000.00 Canadian is there any other taxes due besides the hst? in some literature I see 10% for under 250,000.00

Thank you this is my first boat purchase as we have just moved to Woodland Beach in Tiny Ontario, I may have more questions for you. Do you have a Physical Location? Phone number? Do I need a license or anything else other than the bill for sale and clear title /ownership to cross the border at customs?@@boatinglessons

When you import it and licence it in Ontario, they will sent you a bill equivalent of 13% of what you paid for it
