Ok so I’m from Florida/the south and our manners are way different than other parts of the country. I worked in an industry that dealt with tourists frequently and it took me so long to get used to people not using “Southern Manners” as my mom calls it. I’m better now but just starting out in customer service and not being used to other people’s manners was a shock!

And the fact he is making some income from his deplorable behaviour speaks volumes of the low, low standards of even those who watch his channel. Weird. I'd love to hear someday that a worker pored ice cream over his head, though it's America, so he'd probably sue. Anyway, I'm shocked that there's a demand for such tripe.

Am American, and this dude made me rage. Brought me back to the time when working retail and this guy around my age (early 20s then) was using the entire men's section as his personal closet. Instead of using a cart, he was just draping things on racks left and right. It was later in the evening so I was doing recovery, putting things away. He got all huffy with me that he was using them, so I looked at him and said, "so use a cart and go to the fitting rooms like a normal person."

While I agree that this is impolite to say that this is inhumane treatment I think is a bit of a stretch. I've worked retail before. My fiance has worked retail for 20 years. And although it's nice to have a customer that likes to chit chat we don't consider it inhumane to have one who doesn't. There was no cursing there was no yelling there was no bad language. The guy was just impolite. I don't remember when impolite became inhumane. Genocide is inhumane. There are levels here. Words matter.

@UndertheNeedle282 I won't even say impolite, he was just direct. Give me this, that, and extra. His tone wasn't condensending or sparky. He didn't make any extra noises of frustration or sighing. He didn't call her names or snap his fingers. He didn't even go full Karen. "If I am paying extra for x you should give me enough.." "What was that tiny scoop, ugh this place is such a rip off" He did none of that. What I find interesting is normally foreigners complain that us Americans smile too much and are creepy friendly. Now we have a foreigner complaining that we are not being friendly enough. He was just direct, what is annoying is someone trying to people please the server without stating exactly what they need. If you need catchup just say you need some ketchup don't spend 5 minutes going on about how busy I am, how you hate to bother me, if it isn't an inconvenience, if it is don't worry about it, it really isn't that important... I got 6 other tables you are inconvenience me by taking scoop long to ask for ketchup.

Once I went through a drive-through a little after lunch, ordered how I always do, "Can I please get medium fries?" they asked if I needed anything else, I said "No thanks" they said the price, I said "thank you" and pulled up to the window. When I got there, they handed me a bag FULL of fries and said no need to pay. I was so confused. The guy told me they had just been yelled at by the previous customer, and right after a huge rush they weren't expecting. They said I was just so polite after that bad experience that the whole crew was just like, relieved that not everyone sucks. I wasn't going out of my way to be polite. Just truly my normal everyday tone, etc. You never know when you can be the person to make or break someone's day. And sometimes, you get rewarded for being a decent person. I think I'll always remember the relief of that guy who was so happy to be treated like a PERSON and not just a food producing robot.

I worked for a fast food restaurant years ago, and customers like that bring out the worst in me. I had a lady continually demand "extra pickles" and flat out ask me "what part of EXTRA PICKLES do you not understand?" I put an entire handful of dripping wet pickles on top of her burger, gently placed the bun on top, and said "have a nice day, ma'am" then left her standing there in shock as I proceeded to the next customer.

There was one time I was making this family their sandwiches at Subway (a dad, a mom, and a teen daughter) and when we got to the register, the mom goes "didn't I say not toasted?" (Or something to that degree where I'd have to redo the whole sandwich or whatever) and I just stood there like uhh no you said toasted (I didn't say this lol it was basically my first ever job and I was like a deer caught in headlights). Then I saw the husband/dad kind of click into the convo and was like "no, no you didn't say that. She did it right." And then the mom totally switched and was like "oh! Ok sorry about that." I was like oh thank you, thank you, stranger man!

@RaindropsOnLichenif you act like the examples in these comments, yea you’re still the rude one. These commenters aren’t ‘messing with food’. They’re literally doing what they’re being told, just with a slight passive aggressive edge to counter the disrespect from these rude customers. Asking for more or less of something isn’t rude, but the way you go about it can be.
@amandaflippin5368
@amandaflippin5368 7 месяцев назад
@RaindropsOnLichen the main thing to understand is that there is a huge difference between politely asking and disrespectfully making demands. There are also charts in the food industry that you must go by, for instance, 2 pickles is standard and 4 would be extra. If that's still not enough, there's nothing wrong with asking for more. There is something wrong with being rude and belittling staff. Aggressive over compliance when dealing with people who cannot be satisfied with anything you do isn't "messing with food", it's giving the rude customers exactly what they ask for. I am also by no means young, even though I was at the time, the outcome would more than likely be the same, since my patience for blatant a-holes is pretty much gone as I age 😂

I remember one even clearly had him so mad I thought he was going to be explosively angry, he still managed to calmly ask for the manager and ask them what was up with the dish and what he'd do to make it right. [Legit my dad ordered a strip steak and I stg the thing on his plate looked like someone cooked a dirty dish towel, I'm a timid person and I was like 15 but I was ready to go full Karen]. It's just the Midwestern way. I worked at a theme park for 14 years in the rides and custodial teams and the absolute ENTITLEMENT people have is astounding. I also worked at a Starbucks. We had one notorious lady who would order her drink a certain way, we always did it EXACTLY as she asked as we would have 2 people spotting each other when doing so to prove she was complaining about nothing, then she would inevitably come in and complain that it was made wrong, demand we make it again while calling us incompetent among other colorful terms, then give her that one for free. I was the first person to demand her original drink back if she wanted a new one made otherwise it couldn't possibly be as bad as she said. I'm English and I've worked in hospitality in the UK for 20ish years. Genuinely some customers actually talk like this to us alllll the time, & it's gotten worse in the last 5 years as well. But can you imagine if a server was this rude? Like just use your manners ffs who raised you. Also as much as we'd like to it's almost always not possible to say what you suggested unless someones being aggressive or threatening, you kinda just have to deal with it o at the very least weigh up if its worth letting go or not bc your business will 100% get battered with negative reviews, complaints to a head office if you have one and I've seen people lose their jobs over stuff like this so yeah you have to make decisions fast and mostly it's just easier to let it drop and hope they have a horrible sad life with their bad attitude.

And then you would not have a job. I'm just going to assume you're not old enough to need to work to support yourself, or you are privileged. Even in the UK, there are going to be some people who don't have good manners. You certainly have the right to refuse to serve someone for not saying "please", but your employer would be within their rights to relieve you of your duty if you do so every time you don't like a person's attitude. Your response would only be appropriate if they were harassing you, insulting you, disrupting your ability to work, etc. I would never act like this guy so I'm not defending him, but regardless of where you live this is a melodramatic overreaction to what he's doing. That's not an American thing. That's entitlement. I work retail and see the....deepest depths of rude. People like that take advantage of the idea "the customer is always right." No they're not. Edit: After Robert's addition to his comment, I am assuming thus guy personifies the "cool" and "popular" kid in all the 90's high school dramas. Just a damn bully picking on people who need the minimum wage they earn. 2nd edit:some of my comments aren't showing up. Probably because I have a potty mouth. This video and the comment section was interesting as it shows the straight divide in this audience. Unfortunate really. Instead of judging any one person on their character, it's judgment on all Americans suck and Europe is better. Blows my mind. Good luck with that. I'm gonna stay in my mindframe of to each their own and don't judge a book by the tourists? Narrow minded.

Yes, entitlement can cause this type of behavior. It can also be done with intention, for kicks (or views), such is the case here. Or simply because a person feels as if they are above service industry workers and do not have to show them respect. A lot of people are also just rude and mannerless in all walks of life. However, ALL of these things are FAR more common in America. Definitely an American thing.

It's shocking how rude people have become to health-care workers over the last several years too. As a nurse with over 25 years experience, I just can't believe the way people speak to the people taking care of their loved ones! I get "hey, hey nurse", people who yell for me and my coworkers going down the hallway, people who think nothing of cussing you out and getting right in your face and people talking and getting increasingly louder while we're on the phone (usually with doctors or other family members). Unfortunately, I think it's a lack of proper "home training" and it's more pervasive than ever.

As a nurse I concur. I am beyond sick of the attitudes, and of families and patients thinking they know more than the medical professionals. It is often a detriment to the patient, but most docs will just give in to avoid the fight. I wish I could still physically do night shift.

We see this is the vet world as well. Part of me wonders if it's in part of the fact that anything to do with the health care system is extremely stressful and the only people you can communicate with are ones that do not have the answers. It's extremely expensive, it takes forever just to get an appointment, sometimes you are waiting for like 2 hours before an appointment just to see a doctor for 7 minutes and you don't feel like you were heard the entire time. At least in my experience, people who have pets in the ICU are frantic because they no longer have any control over the situation with a loved one (I consider pets loved ones). In many cases they can only see their pet like once a day (if not in critical condition) so I honestly do have sympathy for people. I will say in general that I get a LOT more respect from these people than my poor nurses and I have kicked people out for disrespecting them. But in some cases, you just have to bite the bullet with these rude people because it's in the best interest of the pet. There was one lady that demanded that I update her every hour on her ESA cat's condition. I told her no, that we will call her if there are any changes (good or bad) and to be patient (the cat had an autoimmune disorder that attacked blood cells, so we were doing a lot of blood monitoring as well as immunotherapy at the same time. Like I understand why she wanted that, but I do NOT have the time to sit and call this woman for 15 minutes (if I am luck) every HOUR when running an ER/ICU. Apparently, this woman ended up calling the front desk nonstop and it was getting to be too much for those saints that work the desk.

It’s disgusting behavior and so frustrating. I work at a grocery store and there’s this one lady that’s somewhat of a regular and acts just like this. Telling us exactly how to bag her groceries even though she’s fully capable of doing it herself. There was a time I was helping her and at the end she asked for some extra bags so I handed her some and she was just like “no can you open them for me” and so I did and gave them back to her. I’m an American in my 40s and I’ve tried deciphering whether the lack of manners from some people is a socioeconomic thing, a geographical thing, or some other thing and I haven’t been able to isolate it. It’s just unbelievable how poorly raised a lot of people are regarding manners. Edit: I want to add that I don’t think all Americans have bad manners. This is the best advice and it's the #1 advice I give, too. With both customers and coworkers, if they are rude, be as nice, patient, and helpful as you can. At the least, you prevent escalation. But MOST of the time, their attitude will quickly change to match yours, and sometimes they even apologize. If you're rude back there's zero chance they will ever think they were in the wrong, and they may cause even more hell for you out of spite. I had a notoriously awful coworker who just wanted to spread misery however she could. 😭 My boss told me she reported me for "violating dress code" by not wearing pantyhose under PANTS (no idea how she noticed that scandalous bare ankle, I was behind a desk all day.) 😂 So I just started being as nice as I could, complimenting her, etc. She did a 180° after ONE DAY. I realized, if a little kindness was all it took, she must really not be doing great. There's always a long story behind any person you are dealing with. It shouldn't become YOUR problem, but it's more rewarding to learn how to make a person walk away feeling better... Or just embarrassed that they were such a dick for no reason 😂

I think those old men have no idea whatsoever what life is like for a working person today. They like to complain about high prices, but they don't care how far wages have fallen behind inflation. I'm 63, and my end of the baby boom is already seeing that we didn't make enough to retire comfortably. People on the other end/middle of the boom got all the benefits of an economy that let them earn enough, plus a lot of the men were in unions. There's a huge, huge difference and they're oblivious.

I'm from Australia and the one thing I've noticed on my travels to the US is that it is such a master/servant relationship when it comes to the service industry and the tipping culture doesn't help. It's like service staff have to beg for tips and there are certain kinds of Americans who just love the power trip that comes with that dynamic. I've seen some shocking things in America. In Australia there is an expectation of mutual respect when people are serving you and we do not get off on making ourselves feel powerful by ordering around service people. Service people don't work for tips in Australia, they are paid a decent wage, so there is no need to take a customer's crap because you are going to get paid at the end of it all.

I'm an American married to a Brit, and I've experienced rudeness in different forms all over the world. Adding "please" and "thank you" is polite, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it automatically makes you a polite person, it just helps; tone of voice, body language, inflections, also need to be kept in check. The spoiled man-baby in the video is just a full-fledged brat who feels entitled to treat people the way he is in this video and never learned to treat others properly. I'm afraid I'd get fired from my job if I had to deal with him as he'd be wearing his food. Most of my personal interactions in NW America are with people who have basic decency and use manners, but food service workers, cashiers, and healthcare workers really are abused quite often from what I understand.

All of this. I work retail now and have rude American and non-American customers. The usual thing is “Give me…”. I have also been to a variety of countries due to my prior career. I’ve encountered more rude men or in some cultures, men who hate women who have any job. But, yea, a majority of my interactions have been more entitlement in Americans than other places. It’s truly an endemic.

Almost four years ago I came here after almost 13 years of exile in the HelLA area during one of the worst times of my family's life, and immediately relaxed. Is it perfect? No, but it's generally genuinely kind. Living in HelLA reinforced all the worst demons of my nature, and it's so good not to be feeding that dirty beast anymore.

So I am doing my master’s degree in Global History and the US kind of fascinates me. My BA is in Anthropology, so human behaviour fascinates me and unfortunately this specific behaviour Americans have, is something I am curious about research wise. I grew up in Europe, Austria to be exact, and we do have very rude people here, but I have seldom encountered entitled people towards service workers. Through my research for my master thesis, I came across the term "American Exceptionalism". In a nutshell, it is a historical term that describe the sometimes "holier-than-thou" mindset, since the US is a very Christian country due to their roots in Puritanism. And back in the days, they thought that the US is the holy land and this developed further towards the American dream concept. Could this be a reason why some Americans are so rude towards service workers? Because of this American Exceptionalism mindset?
@papillonparade
@papillonparade 8 месяцев назад
@@MrsDaedalus_ My understanding of the concept of American exceptionalism is that is more how Americans tend to perceive themselves vs other nationalities, so I think there might be other factors involved with this behavior too. If I had to make a guess, I think it might be due to a combination of American culture valuing individualism (a great emphasis is placed on the self), hyper capitalism (no time for manners, gotta hustle) and racism-classism (this is where something like American exceptionalism might come into play as a large number of service workers are immigrants). This behavior definitely doesn’t apply to all Americans but sadly it does seem to be common. I hope that there is some confirmation bias that happens too…that sadly the negative interactions are more likely to be noticed/remembered by workers than the positive or neutral encounters. (for context, I’m an American who doesn’t agree with a lot of majority American values)

Came here to say something similar. I’m born and raised in NC (small town too, which in my experience can make a difference) and manners were a HUGE thing for me and everybody I knew growing up. I worked in a bigger city for a little while with a large northerner population and they were always surprised and sometimes even offended at my manners. I couldn’t not say ma’am or sir after saying yes/no to somebody bc it’s so deeply ingrained in me, but a handful of people actually yelled at me for saying it. Like I am sorry ma’am, it’s a sign of respect from me, and I know more than a few people who would have gotten their “hides worn out” if they neglected to say ma’am or sir when they were kids lol. Going anywhere up north or any large city is always a jarring experience bc of how gruff people seem in comparison to what I’m used to. That being said, we certainly have our own way of not taking shit from people too lol

I’m from Minneapolis (a major city in Minnesota, for those who don’t know). I had to fast forward through the actual TikTok clips because they made me so uncomfortable. In the central northern US states (the very most northern states, not the midwest) that man’s behavior would be considered absolutely appalling. Treating someone that way would honestly be unacceptable in most areas in the US. That said, that type of treatment 100% does happen, especially in the service industry. It’s extremely disappointing there are people out there who genuinely believe that man’s behavior is acceptable. TikTok broke society.
