Good, strong, valid points, Daniel. Regarding the issue of a 'medal' versus a 'dollar, the original Flowing Hair Dollar was minted without the word 'dollar' on either the obverse or reverse. Right? So I'm thinking that maybe the Mint followed suit in honor of the original coin. Yeah, $104 for a silver medal ain't cheap, and the Mint has hundreds of different medals for less money. The reason I ordered one is because first of all, it's so damn beautiful, and second the finish is so subtle and different. I have a 2.4% chance of a privy mark. and a 13% chance of a signed certificate from the Mint Director for the 1,794 privy coins. Bottom line: will this sell out and will the secondary market be saturated by very high Mint States and driving the prices down? Will I win the privy lottery? Thanks again, numismatic Yoda.

The US mint has turned into the Franklin mint. US postal service did the same thing with stamps. When you start manufacturing 'scarcity' what you're actually doing is selling out your good name and historical significance. To me, moves like this is more of a sign of the beginning of the end for collecting.
@chrissahar2014
@chrissahar2014 5 дней назад
In the past 7 years or so the USPS has stopped producing false scarcities. The only product that comes close to a false scarcity are the imperforate sheets. They sell some special sets with proofs that are interesting. The US Mint is going that direction of Franklin Mint. I have cut back getting products and stick to the following AI dollars - P,D,S,S rev proof, Unc sets, a clad proof --- and MAYBE an ASE Burnished or one of the cheaper commemoratives. I then spend money on a few bullion coins and then older classic coinage. I did order the Flowing Hair because I felt it is cheaper than some of the US Mint medals and to get the old design in such fine condition would be in tens of thousands as you point out. I think it was a good idea but very flawed the execution. Not adding strong beautiful edge lettering just shows the US Mint cutting corners and the price is a little high - they aren't devising a new design simply copying an old one. A fairer price would have been more like $80. This shows the US Mint is getting greedy or it is extravagant in it production costs. I wish someone would sue the US Mint to reveal the TRUE cost to make many of its products as has been with the pharmaceutical companies.

Totally correct. I refuse to buy manufactured "rarities" and that is what the mint had become. I will only buy what I determine meets goals and this doesn't meet my goals. I would much rather have a coin with real history to it

My problem with mint stuff is that it seems to almost always go down once the hype dies down and/or the people who paid the high premium accept that they aren't getting it back. The privy mark coins will probably always carry value but buying the medal with the hope of getting one is gambling.

I think it is sad that so many numismatists dismiss medals as unworthy of their attention. I used to feel the same and while my preference for sovereign coins remains primary I have learned over time to appreciate well-rendered medals as works of art. In a sense, this attitude sort of reminds me of how coin collectors used to look down their noses at paper currency collecting back in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Everyone HATED on paper money and most of it could be acquired for next to nothing. Not so anymore. People finally realized that a lot of that old paper money was not only beautiful, but bloody, freaking, RARE - as few specimens survived in high grades. But, anyway, since the design original came from a sovereign coin, it is understandable that folks would have liked this tribute to also be a sovereign coin, and I am one of them. But I settled for the medal because I love the design and I understand the hurdles involved in getting Congressional authorization.

I am a type coin collector. Years ago, I bought one of these in silver from a private mint because I knew I would never own an original. It cost much less than $104 dollars and it wasn't manipulated from the government mint to make something that would be overpriced when graded. And it is touted as a medal. I do not like the new stuff they are producing because they are not circulating coins. To interest me, I say change the designs of circulating coins to the old styles. That is true coin collecting to me. Besides, for years I bought from the U.S. mint everything they produced, mint sets and proof sets plus the commemorative coins. Some of those things one can't even give it away today.

Reasons I'm not interested: 1) it's a metal not a coin 2) mint states a limit but last year they did that with Morgan and Peace dollars and then just before release, they dramatically increased the total mintage crashing their expected value with that switcheroo 3) the special privy gimmick will create 1794 random lottery winning tickets because there is no guarantee you will get the most desirable issue 4) by the time you get these special privy graded and out in the open market they will comp to buying a real original Flowing Hair. Why would I buy a cheap knock off flowing hair when I can buy an original for the same price? Me personally, I'm tired of the Mint gimmicks and shenanigans...

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but the US mint produces a "limited" run of these and also includes a limited privy mark within the limited run (EDIT: There is also limited amount within the limited amount that will receive a certificate, so 3 levels deep).....sounds like all FOMO to me to justify the price tag and I doubt anyone will actually get the special one with a 1 per house limit, the dealers will get them.

It's still a good deal because of the low mintage. The privy mark will only make money for those that get it first (dealers). That will not include the general public. Perhaps a hand full here and there. I still think it's a good investment. I purchased 2 Graded MS70. I am OK with paying the premium for a graded one because it guarantees me a MS70. If you buy it raw you still pay for a 50/50 chance that it will be graded an MS70.

I live in Canada and received mine the other day. Although it cost me close to $180 CDN, it is a nice medal. Being a preferred customer of the mint got a text for this medal, but did not bite. Have also dropped subscriptions on other offers from the mint mainly because of the price hike. Inflation has taken a toll on my budget big items such as rent and groceries hit hard, the cupboard is bare. If I was to buy it would be some of the Morgan Dollars you have on your site, which always seem to hold their value and have more appeal to me. Old coins done well. You are spot on when you think the Mint could of done better by just doing it as it was back in the day. If we only had a way back machine. Low mintage is good.

I have a strong attachment to the original flowing hair designs from 1794 and 1795. I bought one of these silver medals purely for that reason so that I could enjoy the design in hand without being afraid to accidentally damage an expensive original. I knowingly paid a ridiculous premium for what is essentially a bullion coin. I'm not a bullion nor a modern coin collector and would never spend that kind of premium for something so readily available as an investment. I agree that the mint is devaluing themselves and unfortunately many other people by turning out all these overpriced bullion products. I fear a lot of people are going to lose a lot of money by mistaking such things for rarities and investments.

Because remember, this is a classy piece here. Spare no expense, I say. Then, the grand finale 🥁.... they finally do it. They unfreeze Walt Disney's body and bring him back to life just like he wanted, and he signs 1,794 of the COAs. The US Mint and Disney would be rolling in money. It's nice to see the design return, though I don't buy from the mint because $$$. I'm so used to seeing the old ones that a new one doesn't look "right" - I'd do some immediate toning of I bought one. If it's a limited run that hasn't sold out yet I think that's a FEATURE not a problem - that means people who don't know about it yet will have plenty of time to get one. The "privy mark" makes no sense to me - I wouldn't want that.

The gold is a coin with the edge lettering. The silver medal sold out as soon as the hol was lifted I managed to get 2 from the mint.

The coins with the privy marks are going to go through the roof ! May as well be made out of unobtainium ! Its not fair for the small guy ! 😢

I ordered one. I know it's to much to pay for an ounce of silver. I would have liked it better if it was a dollar coin, but I like the design, and I ordered it.

I agree with you! They should have made it a coin and kept it as original as possible. I still bought one. I can't wait to see if I got one with the privy mark.

Alright, where to begin. 1, it resembles the original, and the hair is good. 2. What's up with her eye, it's too large for her face. 3. Her neck is also a bit longer, in my opinion, than normal anatomy. Now let's flip it over: Is that an eagle, or an egrett? Or maybe a Herron or a Crane? It seems to be making a mockery of the Heroldic Eagle. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan.

it's a medal not a coin, i don't like the finish they should've made it like the original same composition.

Heavy premium for a silver round. They should have done it as coin and added it to the modern Morgan/Peace dollar program. Their privy quantity nonsense turned me off too.

I guess it all depends on a person's objective. Personally, I think the last good thing that the mint did for collectors was the I believe 2019 "W" Washington Quarter. Because they were released into circulation. Therefore, you never really knew what condition you would get one in. S true chase coin and accomplishment. The "V75" made it even more challenging. These special re-renderings take so much of the chase out of the search. It's more like who has spare money to buy a limited medal or token that is at the very least going to be a 68 on a bad day.

As a collector, I feel that it’s overpriced for essentially a glorified bullion round. Also, like you said, they needed to mint it in the same composition and with the edge lettering. Using a the same striking method would have been really cool too. I personally would rather buy an 1840-O Draped half dime with a ridiculously low survival estimate instead of buying a couple of these modern ‘medals’. Just my personal opinion. To each there own:)

For the gold coin, I think the 1795 Draped Bust eagle might have been more appropriate.

Agreed, they need to do 90% silver. Get that same look. And make them an actual coin not medal. They would have sold out immediately.

I picked up one hoping to receive a privy mark or COA. I wonder what the benefit is for the Mint to allot a percentage to bullion dealers. If that is happening, then why would I waste my time or money trying to get one with the odds even less than what is published? Just like Vault Box selling early for Wha'ts Not and not having those available for me when they officially go on sale. Either just sell to dealers or just sell to collectors.

Yeah I have a subscription to the Morgan and Peace dollars just to keep my collection current. I saw this along with the privy mark teaser and went for it. We'll see. It's sold out now but they removed the household limit to do that

Yes I ordered mine yesterday 😂and I love the flowing hair design. Look I believe the limit order probably made it take longer for retail & resellers to buy them out of coins/ waiting room delays and bugs. 😅 I believe this will be a bigger hit than that of the Morgans and peace! THE gold one has letter edge with denominations 😮I am thinking about it but I would never buy from a pre seller even if it’s a reliable bullion dealer because I just need one for my collection . 😊

Being a medal instead of a coin turns many collectors off on these. Also the mint cranking up their prices on everything truly cost them many. many good customers. The 2024 Morgan and Peace issues, proof and regular, are still available months later so slow or no sells outs are going to be the norm for quite awhile.

As you said a coin as first planned. Not a medal? If the mint re did a coin as in the past and priced it right I would have bought 1. It is a beautiful medal without reeded edges and a poor finish I'll stay with the origanals being US Mint Coins Thanks Dan great show!

Good Morning Daniel! ☕ I guess that medal 's worth lies in the eye of the holder. As for.me, I still have plenty of pre 33 business strikes to use my money on. I could buy a replica of a first run Chevy Camaro if I wanted to, but it would still be a REPLICA!!!!!!!!

Always good informative videos. I don't collect medals. Had it been $1 with edge lettering I'd have gotten one. I wonder if they'll have finning problems like prior medals.

So, as I'm watching your video, I had to check to see if they are still available, and the medals are in the reminder status at this point. Thankfully, I was able to order one yesterday. Regarding these being medals and not coins to my understanding that by law, the Mint can only make two different commemorative coins per year. Which in MHO is stupid 🙄 Cheers 🍾 🔥 Daniel.
