ฺBangkok was build according to the old capital, Ayutthaya City inspiration. During time of war chaos, even the wall of Ayutthaya were removed and the brick was transported to Bangkok to build the new capital. This area were surrounded by water that make us call these areas as island : Rattanakosin Island. The cannels mostly were man made, purposely to self defend, transportation and irrigation. So Bangkok has been inscribed the soul and spirt of Ayutthaya.
Your knowledge of the city is amazing for living in Bangkok a little over 10 years! Watching your videos helps me reacquaint myself with the city again after 40 years departure.
40 years of departure? Wow your memories of Bangkok must be so authentic. I reckon you would have experienced the khlong culture when it still existed in the city centre. I wish I had a chance to live in that era
For Rattanakosin island, there is one station called MRT Sanam Chai. This is alongside Museum Siam and around the corner from Wat Pho, otherwise known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It is also a short walk to Pak Khlong flower market and the Grand Palace

It is a beautiful part of the city Jereon, nice to see it like this, quiet and very few tourists. You mention the klong/canal as being part of the Palace fortifications... so it was actually a moat then? Thanks, you've inspired me to go revisit this part of the city again, so much history there!
Most of the buildings in this area are French style. If you walk through Rachadamneun Rd., you will see the similarity to Champs Alysees in Paris. However, King Rama5 was a close friend to Nicholas II of Russia. He visited Thailand when he was a crown prince and our king visted him in Russia when he was a king. Our king sent many young men including his children to study military in Russia.
6:00 At the other side of the khlong at the right side is the Royal Cemetery at Wat Ratchabophit. You should film here if you're in the neighbourhood again. Not many tourists visit this temple and know about the cemetery.
the government of prayuth and the king decided to cease and move tobacco factory out of the area and change it to be central cark of bangkok if it happen in politician era , the land will be for commercial and under-table will happen. but the park is develop by military for the people . soon we will have another park that the king and government stop the land for horse racing and change to park . but all the land still belong to the king in order to ensure no any politician in the future use the land for other purpose. that why the king has rich in term of asset but not for commercial.
The "Territorial Defense Command" is meaningless when litterally translated from Thai word. It might be called "Army Reserve Command" sort of. It runs the part time course of Basic Military/Infantry for the high school students using countrywide facilities of the army.
May be because of the heroic history of those reserve army students who gave their lives during Japanese's raid on our southern coast from Prajuabkirikan to Chumporn during WW II just one day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As a Thai, I don't think the name is meaningless. In the U.S. the reserve officers are now called National Guards.
Beware of pass out from heat stroke and dehydrate!. The scenery and architects around there might look similar to Europe but the climate is completely the opposite!
There is a saying when you see westerner walking during midday as "mad dog and Englishman" because the natives stay in the shade. I hope you don't take offence for walking at noon to bring home to your audience the wonderful Grand Palace and vicinity.
You were walking through a historic area of Bangkok but you gave us little detail of historical interest - Saranrom Park is filled with historical stories but you walked through as if nothing had happened there - no detail on the bridges - the dog was worth more than a 'woof', and your favourite building, the Defence Dept, no ideas on when it was built, etc. Maybe you should consult Ken Barrett's '22 Walks in Bangkok' for some background to the rich history in Bangkok. Normally I enjoy your walks/tours but this one was very disappointing!
Easy senor, easy. Even I'm a bangkokian by birth and walk pass that area once every few months time or longer, I barely know or remember the history of Saranrom Park or the Saranrom Court , not even ever get inside and he is just a farang who lives here.
For one bit of history, as Thai people, we always call Saranrom Palace not Saranrom Park. Used to be a palace for the Royal. The place were used for festive activity. I remember that I went there as a little boy when there was Miss Thailand event in the 60's. Like the other person's comment I live in Bangkok from 6 years old upto now 65 years old, I don't know much about history of the area but for the defence ministry I think it was built during the reign of King Rama V who had visited Russia and that would explain why the building resemble St Petersburg.

My only problem with the yellow building is the windows look like they are merely painted on, almost like poor trompe l’oeil...if you know what I mean?
They are all real windows. You can see some of them actually are opened . In the old day, buildings need a lot of windows because there was no air conditioning.
