I never understand why it would be such an issue for the majority……usually when camping, we are thee to relax and take it all in. And mainly to get away from the rat race, to slow down and reconnect with the speed of nature, If somebody can’t wait an extra 2 mins for water to boil they must be the busiest camper around. Lol. For the small differences I couldn’t justify Laing the extra for the jet oil…….the oex is amazing kit for the money even if slightly larger.

i have to agree with you the difference between boils is irrelevant for me however the price is , i have the OEX along with most of my camping equipment which is all OEX and in all fairness the quality is exceptional for what you pay

You are so right! I have my Stanley Master thermos bottle with close to boiling water at hand all day long if I need a rapid thermal action! :) I can't imagine any situation when you have to boil a water fast when touring, apart of giving a birth! :)

@@flightographist Valid point However I use a MSR PR 2 with a cheap Chinese heat exchanger pot similar to the JB But used a Dremel to cut three slots so it fits the MSR arms and brings the burner to 25mm from the pot base. This has reduced the boil time for 500ml to 2min 30 sec so gas usage is not far off the Jet Boil for half the price.

As someone born and raised in America I grew up on Spam. There are things about the can that even I didn't know until my late twenties. You can find this enough on line but not necessarily on the Spam website. If you squeeze the short ends together you will hear a pop. That releases the vacuum around and under the meat. If you squeeze a little it will bend the can enough that it stays open and when you flip the can over the meat will come out easier. It may not slide right out but it will be easier, and you won't have to punch a hole in the bottom. Hope this helps you.

That Tacama looks the same dimensions as my Jetboil Sumo. I can hold everything inside it including a 230g gas can as well. Here in Australia a budget $50 Jetboil clone has also hit our cheap stores (K-Mart) in the past few weeks. Looks more like a direct Jetboil copy than the the Tacama you demo'd here ... best thing though, they also released a cheap gas canister for sale as well. Only $4.96 for a 230g can as opposed to a genuine Jetboil 230g gas can that costs me $12 at the local camping store. Yet to test it out bush yet to see how it compares but for $4.95 I can buy 2 of them and still have $3 in my pocket ;) The best bit of these Jetboil clones is - it helps more people get into hiking/backpacking without needing to spend a fortune. If it works for a year while they get out bush and figure out if they like hiking/backpacking then its money well spent I reckon ;)

Australian Gasmate has had these for as long as Jetboil has been around and like all Gasmate they are AU gas safety approved, Cost me $65au around eight years ago

well. It's been 2 years, do you know the difference between the two types of gas? jetboil use propane but I don't know about other brands, but propane is burn hotter more heat is faster, and faster is fuel efficient, and fuel efficient is money efficient . You can buy cheap cars but you should buy normal gas , don't fall for cheap gas

A better test might be measure how much gas they use to boil the same amount of water. Just weigh the cylinders before and after. You’d then know how how well it might last on a weekend trip. No point in boiling water in one minute if it uses half your gas to do it 😀😀

Yes, The price difference is big but that's not the whole story. The joy of using a piece of kit that works smoothly and feels better due to its better construction is worth a lot over the lifetime of the product. Both appear to do what they are intended to do and do it fast. My complaint is the noise and having to carry the fuel canister , empty or full. I like alcohol or wood burning , especially the wood burning. I camp in a Jungle hammock so twigs and small branches are handy. What I really like , they are quiet when operating and later you can even have a small fire ( Affectionately called a Backpackers TV ) in it. Plus when I'm camping I do not get in a hurry , hurrying is for when I'm at home.

You found a cooking method that suits your purpose. Others like the gas stoves because they boil fast and are consistent. They want to get those miles down and not fiddle with alcohol or wood. Sometimes there are fire bans too so you can't use a wood stove.

I really dislike the bulk and weight of these things. Granted they're more fuel efficient but I just don't really get it for one or two man camping. Personally I love the lighter and far more compact setup I have: - MSR Pocket Rocket 2 (fits inside in a little pouch) - Toaks Titanium ultralight 750ml pot (with lid) - 100g canister (nests inside) - Sea to Summit X-Cup (nests on the Toaks lid) - Optimus Clip on Wind Shield - Jetboil Gas Canister Stabiliser (stays on top of the X-Cup)

It just depends ok your needs. It’s nearly an obsession today for people to shave a gram off here or there……not be too crude but If I haven’t been to the toilet before a hike…..I’m carrying an extra pound or two in weight. Lol. I understand that the difference between a 4.5kg tent and 1.5kg tent makes a difference, but for something so light, I can’t imagine how anyone would even notice the difference in weight. These kits are handy in that Everything is in one small package……maybe If it was a 3 week trek but for a jaunt up the hills or mountains, I think it can become and obsession. And at the end of the day, the heavier it is, the more your body is working to shift it equals an increase in fitness levels. Win win.

Perhaps having been around camping gear since the 1970s, the fast adjustment on the OEX doesn’t seem like much an issue. Once any stove heats up it should hold adjustment and not change. Fair and balanced review as usual, and reminds me of what we’ve been missing all year, the outdoors and happier times 👍

Hi Paul, point of information... you can fit the regulator and gas canisters into the minimo... just remove the pot support. I regularly use mine without the pot support... all fits in one unit.

Think i will stick with the trusty trangia....you know how much fuel you have and virtually nothing to break. Boil time is more often than not irrelevant. Had my daily driver - trangia over 9 years and only had one issue (driver error) o ring burnt! Really enjoyed this vid..... and often toyed with the idea of getting a gas burner but never bothered lol....cheers

I picked one up in go outdoors last week. I have been looking at the jet boil, but just couldn't justify the price. I had seen a review on the fire maple and for a lot less than the jet boil and was looking to get that. I then see this in store,took it out the box and its the same as the fire maple. So for £35 it was in my basket. Used a couple of times whilst out walking and paddleboarding and it works a treat. On a side note when I timed it to boil 0.5ltr of water it came in at 3.35 minutes. Great review btw Paul.

I have been using the OEX for over a year and have been pleased with it and I like the way it all packs away. I really wanted a jet boil but the eye watering price of it and the accessories were beyond justification. But there is no saying I won’t buy one in the future but I will have to think long and hard . Always great to watch your channel and keep up the good work.

The right choice! Totally reliable, super cheap and old school! The mini trangia is ace. I am against the gas stoves as most people simply bin the old cannisters causing more waste. Great review, always fair and well informed. Great channel Paul👍

I just use a simple meths stove with a wind deflector and my pan is a Primus LiTech Trek Kettle both have lasted about five years, the best stove and pan combo is what you are used to.

Ive had meltdowns of 3 of them with the 4th one they didnt want to replace it anymore what is plastic doing underneith a burner anyway they say its heat resistent it should be fire proof in my oppinion a money squeezing company

I've had original jetboil for about 15 years its never let me down and you can fit a small gas canister pot support and a plastic stove support in. You can also regulate the simmer on it but it's a bit of a fiddle as it's just round plastic control and doesn't stick out from the burner. Great review Paul 👍

The pocket rocket is the price of the OEX full kit, a full £35 The MiaoxinUK Mini can be had for £7 and does the exact same job exactly as well.

And you’ll have to carry 2X more gas that way. So, for a short hike - you want a pocket rocket and titanium mug, but in a long run (a week or more) you’ll spend so much more fuel, that integrated system will actually be lighter for you. Specially, if you boil all the water you consume. Integrated cooking systems like these are vastly more efficient

I love my Trangia and Esbit cookset cooking in bags so no pots. I like the idea of the control of gas but I'm never sure how much is left in the canister.

I do like this chimney type stove, good in windy conditions and the pot twists and clicks into the stove, it feels more stable. I just bought a Jetboil copycat, Fjern, from Sport Pursuit. £50, can’t wait to try it out!

Interesting and good review. I was just looking the other day for a stove, looked at the Jet Boil and MSR windburner then spotted the OEX on sale in Go Outdoors and it was a no brainer for me. I could pack everything in it and just go, even on short one day hikes. It's obviously not as efficient however an extra minute or so of waiting around just isn't an issue 95% of the time. I also put my spork in it and a couple of extra's like a bit of oil and salt.

My first stove was a jet boil minimo, great for boiling water. Now use a Soto windmaster with an alpkit ti pot. Which is great and also great with other Pans. Wouldn’t go back to a jetboil. Good video Paul.

This is also sold as a FireMaple FMS-X2 on sites like AliExpress. Have used mine for a couple of camping trips now and the only criticism I have of it is that it doesn't pour very well as there's no lip, aside from that, it's an amazing little stove and very efficient! Well worth 50 euros!

I am not a fan boy but the timings for the water boil are well off for the OEX I have 3 units and all test the same hard rolling boil 3 mins, and all adjust very low the valves are not as aggressive as stated in this video, all simmer very good with adjustability on my units, of course he might have had a bad one. Could also be a possibility low gas in the can he used this would have an effect maybe., I used a brand new gas can.

I just bought the OEX and its now £80. I usually use (and love) the basic pocket rocket style stove, the amazon £10 pot n lid. The gas, stove, cloth, spoon and lighter all fit inside the small pot, very compact and light. The OEX just seems more sturdy and safe for car. camping

personally i made my own kit for less money and lighter weight: it all fit inside the cookpot very compact. -650ml titanium pot (30$) -BRS titanium stove (15$) -isobutane 100g+ plastic folding stand (10$) +lighter, sponge and rag only problem is that it lack a windshield. i either bring a small accordeon style one, or i use branches.

I am in Australia, I've recently purchased a similar knock off jetboil it was $50 Australian. I think given the price its fantastic! I don't have much of a budget to buy equipment and in Australia everything is expensive! Lol so it works well for me! Also I love that the fuel fits in the pot so I only have one thing to find in my bag!

Paul, that's the main problem I had with the Mini. I just purchased a spare MicroMo cup and that solved the issue. Both the 1L and .8L cups will fit all the components inside. Love your videos keep up the great work.

Been backpacking best part of 40 years and I wouldn’t put either of those in my kit, let alone pay over a ton for one, them jetboils, 140 quid for a single burner with a pan on it, they come along ! 😆

I use a msr superfly and have done for the past 15 years, it's always done the job, it has a large burner, piezo lighter and takes both types of gas bottle fittings which is handy traveling in Eastern Europe. I have been using a tiny cheap Chinese thing which I was given and must admit also works well but is noisy, it does have a piezo lighter and worked well at 8.5 thousand feet 2 years ago.

I still have my OG PCS, that also carried an 100g fuel canister as well. Though tbh these days it's a bit like Triggers broom, it's had a new cozy, new measure cup, lid and burner the only thing that's OG was the actual body cup ☺️

It's basically a rebranded FireMaple, the price is good though, FireMaples have increased in price a whole lot over past couple of years. Sure it's a little slower than a Jetboil and it's a bit heavier but tbh for the price they are great. I use a lot of dehydrated and ration pack boil in the bag meals on my wanderings and the FireMaple/OEX have a larger size that complements either one or two meals at a time easily. I like the integrated handle and pot clip and the fact it holds everything including fuel helps me forgive that extra girth. This isn't wimpy ultralight 'pocket rocket and titanium cup with added tinfoil windshield' territory, and it dosent pretend to be. It's a cheap, middle of the range gas powered kettle/ stove. And dosent pretend to be anything more. If you want a self contained kitchen for cooking gourmet on the go get an Trangia. Finally if it does indeed follow the FireMaple quality then it will serve you well for years to come, since I've had mine for about 6 years and it cost £25 and it's still going strong. For a tenner more all these years later, you can't go wrong.

Didn't scroll through all the comments to see if this has been suggested, but I believe the fuel can be stored in the pot. Have the base of the fuel canister nest in the stove. Then place them on their side and they should fit into the pot. It is a bit counterintuitive. My son in law has a jet boil and that is how we got it to work. There are also videos showing the process out there if my explanation isn't good enough.

Great informative video of these two camping stoves. I purchased the Jetboil MiniMo around a year ago and have found it very good. Repacking the stove - place the burner/protective bag upside down in the container first. Next place a 100g gas canister on top of the burner right way up. Vertically slide the base support in between the side of the canister and container. Place two tea bags and a small plastic container with dried milk in. Clip the lid on to top of the container. Bingo, great for those people who drink tea. Place the pan support in a plastic container within the frying pan, job done.

I like to scramble eggs when packpacking. Bought the MSR windburner, found out it can't simmer so exchanged it. Got the jetboil zip thinking it was a good deal. Exchanged it for the Minimo. It's def worth noting that only 3 models of the jetboil can simmer. Seems like such a big oversight for these kinds of burners. I really wanted the MSR to work for me as I am a fan of that brand

Just thought I'd add, my tacana was covered in flames yesterday due to what go outdoors called a faulty gas cannister, the stove is in perfectly good condition apart from the rubber cover on the valve adjustment, so the plastic around the stove held up extremely well to say it was burning for a good few minutes. It also seems to have rather good flame adjustment in comparison to the one in the video, maybe a quality control issue? , for the price I would definitely recommend one.

That OEX looks almost exactly as Fire Maple X2 or X3. I’ve tried to cook on X2 - it requires very fine regulation, but it’s manageable

I have a Fire Maple and agree with you - the design is extremely similar.

The Fire Maple I have can't quite fit the bigger gas bottle inside like this does, I know as I ran and got it when he showed it all fit inside! Looks like the lid is slightly taller, and the hob part has shorter feet? I mostly use on my own so need a smaller setup, looking at the Sota Windmaster and titanium cup, although that can become an expensive combo! Can't quite decide on optimal cup size. One that holds a small gas I think? Could get a much cheaper stove, but know the Windmaster is a guaranteed winner!

@@allyburns1 230g canister fits perfectly into a Fire Maple X2, even with a pot support thing. First 8-days hike with X2 I was overly cautious and took a 450g gas canister, so I boiled all the water I consumed for drinking and cooking - like 4.5 liters a day, and there was a half of gas left when I returned (Septembers in The Carpathians: -3C at night to 20C day temps)

I disagree with this reply I have run a test just now even though I did not need to as I know my stoves, this review is not spot on and in fact far from it, your response has no foundation John as you have not compared it to a test you did yourself.

I use a jetboil flash, its a good 5 years old its been all over the world with me and still brews up as good as day one plus you can fit everything inside like the OEX, you can pick them up for £80-£90 now

Thanks, this was very informative... I like the fact you can not only get the gas canister inside the cheaper stove but a bigger one too. Also I personally prefer the classic pan handle feature. However, the adjustability of the flame and the boil time on the expensive model, I think, makes this the stove of choice 👍 Now all this said, lets get the important thing... HP sauce verses Daddies !!! There's no comparison to be made, both are unique and to be enjoyed without moderation 😋🥰😂

Hi Paul, another great video, many thanks. I use a Jetboil Flash which does me fine as I really only boil water rather than cook full on meals when I'm out. It has the same "all or nothing" gas valve as the OEX but as you say if you're really careful you can simmer with. The Flash is basically made to get water from 0 to 100C in as quick a time as possible. With a new gas cannister it will boil 750ml water in 2 to 2.5 minutes. Boil times extend slightly as the gas pressure drops in the cannister as it empties but it's still very rapid. Gas efficiency is great - I get at least a dozen boils of 750ml water from one small cannister (100g). I have heard reports that the Jetboils are not great in windy conditions - not sure if anyone has any views on that - but I've not found it an issue with the Flash personally. Just stick your rucksack up wind of the stove as a break and job done. Keep up the good work mate!

OEX do make some great kit. I took the OEX Traverse inflatable mat all over europe with me and it was perfect. From mountains in the arctic circle to forests of Latvia.

We have the OEX stove, I just couldn't justify the JetBoil price. My best adventure buddy has your JetBoil and we had a brew off and she did marginally beat me but I did drink my brew before her!!! We even stopped video to get the stove out of the back of my van to go through it with you!! Great video Paul, thanks a lot.

I tend to use a pocket rocket stove with a zebra billy-can. But also use a firebox (less often with these very dry summers) or a simple alcohol stove and a crusader cup as a general purpose pot.

Great comparison, I think the cheaper one gives people a chance to get some kit and get out there using it. Seems to be you get what you pay for. I can see the attraction of these all in one kits and where they will excel, I was very tempted by the windburner, still using a pocket rocket 2 though. Got the tocanna as I was just starting out. It is more basic but that's reflected in the price. For now I'll keep it as I can wait an extra 2 minutes waiting for water to boil. I can also fit a collapsible cup into the lid. Like the control for simmering with the jetboil though, so maybe one for the future.

My OEX stove arrived today and on a first test run, the flame control seems to be better than the one tested in the video. Possibly, this has an improved regulator. I paid £45 from Go Outdoors. The packing system demonstrated works with the Go System gas canister with no problems.

I agree. Mine arrived today and the simmer control was the first thing I tested and I am more than impressed. Also the boil time for 500ml was somewhere between 2 and 2 and a half minutes. I turned my back and found it at a full rolling boil at 2 1/2 minutes so not sure when it actually started boiling. That’s good enough for me so haven’t even bothered testing again.

I bought the tacana last week for making brews while out hiking. Used it twice now. Can't fault it for 25 quid. Not sure why you would choose either of these for gourmet cooking but for boiling water quickly you can't go wrong. Quick tip for getting canned meat out quickly: just give the sides of the tin a quick buzz with the stove. Pops out clean as a whistle. Great vid by the way.

very good comparison, I recently picked up a fire maple version of the OEX and I love it for doing noodles in its so convenient. I have added a jay cloth that I wrap round the burner to stop it scraping and clanking in the cup when in transit.

OEX, Jobsworth, Alpkit and the Fire Maple all have the same machining and tooling marks - they're all made in the same Chinese factories. So which one you buy is up to you. I've had the Fire Maple for 2 years and it works well - £25 delivered

If it wasn't out of stock I would have bought the OEX stove halfway through the video, love how everything fits in, it may not be the best quality but for the price, it should do the job. Not that I need another one, I'm more than happy with the mini Campingaz Twister Plus but it never hurts to have more than one.

The jet boil flash is the best jet boil in my opinion. Everything packs inside including the gas canister. Plus. It’s even possible to get the French press accessory inside. I have a flash and a zip. But I upgraded the zip burner for the flash version. Paul you still need to get your hands on the minipresso. Great espresso on the move! In combination with the jet boil. I never go to work without them.

in terms of efficiency, you have to calculate(weight) the use of gas to get a more accurate comparison.

I have the jet boil, the simmer facility is a real plus, make certain you get that option. Use it all the time, great for pasta etc. The OEX for its money looks great value.

Great review Paul. I'm still using my 30 year old trangia. I use the meths burner in the summer months and have a gas burner for the winter months when the meths is slower due to the lower temperatures. I have toyed with the idea of getting a jetboil! But my trangia still does the business so slow to change! Keep up the good work.

My alpkit brukit is perfect for me. When I bought it a few years ago it was only £35, I think it’s on their website for £45 now. Comparable to a jet oil too. But aren’t these stoves really just designed for boiling water to add to freeze dried food. I personally won’t carry all those tins, eggs and bacon packets in because you got to carry the empty stuff out. It’s just a couple of days in the wild, so find your favourite food and go.

I use the 'Icetek Sports Ultralight Portable Outdoor Backpacking Camping Stove' that cost me £3.95. Just added my stainless steel pots and a cheap plastic canister stand and that's been me good to go for the last 6 years....I confess, I've never been much of a gadget freak. :)

I've had a jet boil since they came out, I use the taller shape ones so that it all fits in the pan. It is less versatile but self contained. I am on my second one as the first went obsolete and I couldn't get spares but my mates still using it. Many a brew in the forces and now on my DofE expeditions, just love the speed and convenience. I got both jet-boil and oex both do a great job, and yes if you on a budget OEX is the one for you, at the end of the day both will cook your food and boil your water one may be faster than the other, great video mate nice one.... ady

Hi Paul, I've had a Coleman fyrestorm for a few years now £50 amazing stove,good simmer control and everything packs up small . It goes everywhere, hiking, biking ,camping. I did think about the oex to leave in the car after seeing it in G O.👍

Nice review Paul, I bought one from Planet X which cost £29.99- bigger that the jet boil - which only cooks for one whereas the OEX from Planet X cooks for two. Time wise it may be slower but i think its good value for the money.
