Is this Thornfield Hall from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre novel? Did Charlotte get inspired by the story of the Mad Woman in the Attic? Did she see the secret staircase? Come with me as we look around this wonderful old Yorkshire house and get a glimpse of what Charlotte would have seen when she came to visit 185 years ago.

--ABOUT ME--
Hello, I'm Kate-a huge fan of the Brontë Sisters for many years. Upon relocating to Yorkshire with my husband, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the village of Haworth, home of the Brontë Sisters and my obsession grew. It was during the challenging days of the Lockdown in 2020 that I decided to channel my passion into action. Disappointed by the lack of quality Brontë-themed goodies available, I embarked on a mission to create my own and my online shop was born.
Since then, I've immersed myself in the world of literature, attending Book Festivals and events across the UK. Inspired by my adventures and encouraged by the enthusiastic response from fellow Brontë enthusiasts on social media, I decided to share my experiences through RU-vid videos.

The story of Sir Richard and his horse is absolutely fascinating! The mark on the floor is particularly compelling, not only can you see the outline of the shoe, but the horse's frog too! (The frog being part of the hoof of the horse that is in the shape of a V. It's a very tender part of their foot. amazing to see this! No wonder Charlotte Bronte was inspired by this place!

The owners said that when the floor in the entrance hall became infested with death beetles, they cut this section out straight away to save it and re-set it away from the infected floor. I so glad the horrible beetles didn't get to it.

Jane Eyre is certainly one of my favorites by Charlotte. The childhood she had to suffer broke my heart. She overcame much and persevered. I can understand how she became fascinated by Mr. Rochester but after the deception he put Jane through,myself I wouldn't have gone back. I would have stayed with the Rivers family,that was the only thing I would have changed. I found this huge house very intriguing, with it's hidden attic room and the story of the madwoman. Yes, it could inspire many stories I'm sure. I don't believe the story about the horse's hoof print though. Why only one? Cheerio.
@brontesistersuk
@brontesistersuk 4 дня назад
The hoof story is a bit mad I agree, I think it's a knot in the wood but still a great story. I think the owners were good story tellers. Jane Eyre is a brilliant book, I agree. So glad she didn't go with St. John Rivers as a missionary, she would have been so bored with him. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for this. It looks like the Thornfield in the Timothy Dalton version. My favorite . In the US, we tear down a house before its a 100 years old, if that. This is amazing !

That's a great place. I like that it's been left alone pretty much and isn't all renovated and modernized. I can believe that was the inspiration for Thornfield.

I had never heard the story of where Charlotte Bronte got the inspiration for Thornfield Hall and, in particular, the side story of "the crazy woman in the attic room," which I have always felt was an ingenious, Gothic touch to her book. Great video here.

Oh yes I do think that this definitely could be the inspiration for Thornfield Hall. It is absolutely beautiful - and the gardens too!! I was so relaxed looking at it - and you have a calming voice. Thank you so much for this. I have always wanted to visit Bronte Country. I first read Jane Eyre at school and then just had to read Wuthering Heights. Thank you. See you next video 📚😊

Welcome and I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. I spent hours in the garden, long after everyone else had gone. It was beautiful and, strange as it sounds, I felt like I was being watched and any minute I would see a child peeping out from behind a bush. Not in a scary way either. I have so many ideas for videos so I hope you like them.

A long time favorite book, and a beautiful (and intriguing) house. Agree with the commenters who have mentioned literary license in the matter of the nonexistent battlements.... Apropos of absolutely nothing, I remember noticing something in one of the movie versions of the story (not sure which one, I've seen most of them). And I'm sure I wasn't the only one who noticed during the scene with poor mad Bertha, the camera zoomed in fairly close to her face while she was talking (and moaning). Close enough that the amalgam fillings in the actress's teeth were quite visible.... I expect if this particular version were ever to be re-released, they'd go in and fix that anomaly. With today's technology it would be quite easy to do, as I understand it.
@brontesistersuk
@brontesistersuk День назад
The battlements bothered me to start with (or the lack of them) but I am hoping she either forgot the house at Norton Conyers didn't have them or decided they needed them in the book so Betha had somewhere to stand/jump from at the end. Will have to rewatch all the Jane Eyre films (for research of course) to see which one has Bertha's fillings in it. Thank you for watching my video.

Thornfield had battlements and a roof that could be walked on. If's a very central part of the story. This place has no battlements. Plus there is NO hard evidence CB ever went there, is there?
@brontesistersuk
@brontesistersuk 13 дней назад
I know, evidence is hard to come by.
@Beruthiel45

However, one must allow the author to create different details from her inspiration to assist in her story. Just because Norton Conyers has no battlements does not disallow it from being Charlotte's inspiration. One feature, the staircase, and then the family tale of the madwoman in the attic, might easily have been her starting points. The fact that the brother of her employers owned the property makes it not unlikely that even if she hadn't visited she could have heard the story. A creative author with imagination doesn't need a complete replica to enhance a story, they add and subtract as well as invent to suit their needs. I quite accept the notion that this house might have been at least the inspiration for Jane Eyre. Thank you for finding the link, tenuous as it might possibly appear on the surface. Well done! 😊👍
