Discovering Harbin, the capital city of China's most northernmost province, Heilongjiang which borders Russia. Harbin was founded and built by the Russians in the late 1800s who came to build the Chinese Eastern Railway, an extension of the Trans-Siberian railway. While most Russian immigrants left Harbin in the 1950s, their influence can clearly still be seen in the city's architecture.
Harbin was also under Japanese occupation during World War 2. Unit 731 was a top-secret biological and chemical warfare research base established in Harbin in 1935. The Japanese conducted unthinkable human experiments on the Chinese and Russians.
A historical city with a dark past, Harbin is the most popular tourist destination in China today. Its ever popular Harbin Ice festival has gone viral on social media, and has attracted the attentions from visitors all over the country.

The Japanese started invading China in 1931. So the Chinese people were fighting a much longer war than the Europeans were fighting the Nazi’s. Different from the Germans, the Japanese never apologized to the Chinese people, instead, they denied what they did to the Chinese and other Asian people. The Australians also seem to have forgotten how their soldiers were being tortured to death by the Japanese. The world need to remember what really happened.

You went to 731 meseum! Without knowing the unspeakable suffering the Chinese has endured in the past century, it is impossible to fully understand why Chinese people today are so hardworking, united and determined. The victim of unit 731(and many other similar units) is not only Chinese. In order to acquire accurate data on all races the Japanese also took ally prisoners of war to Harbin and Shenyang for their evil experiment , which include Russian,British,American and Australian. We are all in this together. Please accept my sincere gratitude. You are a true friend. Also, there is a reason why it is so little known to the outside world just as how China is demonized. If you reveal too much detail of the museum you will not only receive threat but also face problems with RU-vid. My suggestion is not to go into details just let the world know such museum exists and people should pay a visit. Enough.

At the exit of the 731 Museum, you walked a long way, symbolizing that moving forward, there is light at the exit, peace and prosperity ahead. Let's not forget the path that led Chinese here, and remember our great martyrs. We need to understand the true history of the people's suffering, recognize the reality that being backward and weak leads to being bullied and oppressed, and work to build China into a world power, ensuring such historical tragedies are never repeated.I wish our country and its people never again suffer from foreign aggression and bullying. Also, your comment is very helpful-- Ivana and I actually noticed that Unit 731 Museum was the fist museum we've been to where the exit is around the back and you have to walk through the snow to return to the street. We didn't know what to make of it... We almost thought there must be construction or something, blocking the exit. I guess we didn't understand the symbolism at the time. The current 731 Museum is actually a new museum. In the old museum, many visitors were given psychological counseling when they entered and exited. They were afraid that the visitors would not be able to bear it. There were scratches on the walls of the old museum, blood stains on the ground, and babies soaked in formalin. , the chemical smell permeating the air of human tissue... Wow, incredible comment. Ivana and I have been to the museum at Auschwitz (German concentration camp in Poland), and we had a similar (albeit maybe less extreme) experience as the old Unit 731 museum you mentioned. It was a bit overwhelming. We found the current Unit 731 Museum to be pretty thorough in terms of the details surrounding the experimentation and the war, but manageable in terms of how vividly it pained the atrocities. Anyway, thanks for commenting and watching our video. We always enjoy museums and sometimes the darker/sadder ones are the most important ones.

Thanks for having the courage to visit and show the Unit 731 museum. That part of history, along with the nanjing massacre and other atrocities Japanese did to chinese, korean, ryokyo people, malaysians and other SE countries are unspeakable and cannot be forgotten. The US and the West purposely choose not to remind the world of this piece of history because Japan became American ally after WWII, but we Asians will never forget, regardless how much PR the Japanese government has spent on.

In Europe it's mostly because of how the holocaust directly affected us... Here in France, Jews being deported, persecuted and killed all over the country. Let's not forget either of these two tragedies... It’s not because there is no chinese version of a movie, it’s purely because of geopolitics and post WWII world order. The US and the West deliberately erased this piece of history from the MSM and hollywood, not long after the war, opposite to all the efforts they put in to make people remember Nazis and the holocaust. The real reason is that the US has made Japan their semi-colony (by having military bases on the soil) and their important ally in asia pacific, so they choose not to grill japan for that. Another reason being, US has made deals with the japanese for getting the United 731 research and experiment results, and even recruited some of the criminals. The US also gave the right of governance of ryokyo to Japan, though Japan doesnt have the right to sovereignty (based on Cairo agreement post the war, Japan only rightfully owns the 4 big islands, no others). But now Japan not only governs ryokyo and annihilated their local culture, but also claims sovereignty to other small islands and have territorial disputes with ALL its neighbours. How disgusting.

What a lovely couple! Here's some background information about Harbin: In the early 20th century, the Russian Tsar was overthrown in a revolution, leading to the escape of many Russian nobles. Some went to Europe, while others sought refuge in the Far East, including Harbin. As a result, Harbin boasts numerous Russian-style buildings and cuisine. The Chinese-Russian population in the border regions of China consists of the descendants of those who escaped to China. Despite having just three days, you still managed to visit the 731 Memorial Museum. It's remarkable that, among the many RU-vidrs who visit China, you are the only ones I've seen who visited this museum, even though its somber content may not directly benefit travel videos. As a Chinese person, I sincerely thank you for your visit. I hope you have a smooth and joyful journey! Looking forward to your new videos!

Harbin was founded by Russia in 1898 and was Russian until 1932. China leased whole region to Russia in 1896 for 80 years. But in 1932 it was intervened and occupied by Japan.

something to add for people who are interested: 1. some local people or people who visited Unit 731 site before when there was an “old part” opened said that today’s museum/site is rather “plain” and “conserved” because the museum only uses a lot picture images so it is less traumatising to more age groups. 2. before the Japanese army left they also realised batches and batches of rats and pests which carried viruses to the wild causing contagious diseases going around China for the following decades, it only got controlled till 1950’s. 3. Most of the people committed the crime never got punished, instead they lived privileged lives and became elites in post war Japan’s political sector, medical sectors or research institutes. 4. Most of the evidence got destroyed, only these small amount of evidences have been obtained by Soviet red army who also prosecuted the captured ones as war criminals.

Commemorating war museums is not to promote hate towards Japanese people, just like the Auschwitz Museum is not for Jews to forever hating the Germans. It simply reminds us that wars are horrific, and we must not repeat the same mistakes from the past. As a Chinese, and only speaking for myself, I have many close Japanese friends and really appreciate their politeness and kindness. Only by visiting these museums, one can realize how quickly wars can turn humans into animals... Many years have passed, and the movie "Black Sun 731" can still scare me. Live experiments conducted with a large number of Chinese and a small number of Russians and Koreans. After World War II, as an exchange for exemption from punishment, the 731 unit handed over experimental data to the United States (Fort Detrick), and many members of the 731 unit joined major hospitals in Japan.

Wow, I did not even know this kind of museum existed, nor did I know this kind of atrocity took place. I am a proud Chinese and been living in Europe for most of my life. This was never taught in school and I always thought the Holocaust was the most darkest part of human history. I plan to visit this museum on my next visit to China. The leaders of Unit 731 were able to avoid the punishment even though they were sentenced as war criminals and moved to US, eventually became advisors at Fort Detrick. Just google it.

In the trial of war criminals during World War II, the United States helped 731 war criminals evade trial and brought the main researchers of 731 to the United States with high salaries, establishing the Fort Derrick US Army Laboratory. The poisoning of American civilians around the 1960s came from these people.In the summer of 2019, white lung disease appeared around the Fort de Crick laboratory, which was called "caused by electronic smoke" in the United States. At the World Military Games held in Wuhan, China, in October 2019, American athletes were stationed around the seafood market where COVID-19 broke out in November, and several athletes had a record of sudden high fever. This hospital was also the outbreak point of COVID-19 later, just around the seafood market.Later investigations proved that personnel from this hospital often made purchases at the seafood market, and the infection chain was very clear.

I am of Chinese ancestry (Taiwan) but brought up outside of Asia since the age of 1. I grew up knowing about this very dark part of the the not so distant history... Have travelled throughout China for work and pleasure during my adult years. Have been to Harbin but never had the courage to visit the museum till this day. So I genuinely understand what you meant by lost for words in your vocabulary... it shows us that humans re capable of unspeakable atrocities... and for what?

It is worth pointing out that, in addition to Unit 731 in Harbin, the Imperial Japanese Army also established human experimentation units in various occupied countries and regions in Asia. These inhumane medical researches have in fact produced many valuable results, as these human experiments were not permitted by civilised societies, which is unique in the history of mankind. After the surrender of Japan, the United States made deals with war criminals in order to obtain the results of these researches, and in the end almost no one was tried. For example, Shiro Ishii, the founder and leader of Unit 731, was not prosecuted and lived to the age of 67.

Me neither. I have visited the Museum for the Nanjing Massacre and i couldnt stay for long. I would not dare visit this 731 museum because i’m sure i would get clinically depressed after the visit. There is a Chinese author who visited and interviewed the nanjing massacre surviors and wrote a book about it, but after few years she suicided out of depression. That’s how powerful this piece of history is. Though I dare not go into the museum, i will never forget that piece of history and will make sure my kids and grandkids will be fully aware of it as well.

Thank you, I remember Ivana comes from Indonesia. Her homeland also suffered from Japanese aggression during World War II, including other Southeast Asian countries. I believe she empathized with this because I noticed that her emotions were a bit low in this episode. During World War II, Allied soldiers, including Australian soldiers, were also massacred by the Japanese army, so this is not solely the suffering of the Chinese people. The number of Chinese people killed by the Japanese army and the time they were invaded during World War II was even greater than that of Jews, but the Germans knelt down and apologized, and we received nothing. Remembering history is to prevent disasters from happening again. Every Chinese should remember that heavy period of history, but the Japanese refuse to apologize, so we cannot believe that they have reformed. However, no matter what, we will remember that period of history and not let it disappear in the long river of history. I am very grateful to you for visiting the memorial hall. It is enough to let more people know that this memorial hall has this history. If the introduction is too detailed, it may put you in unnecessary danger. Wishing you peace and happiness. At the Japanese 731 Bacteriological Research Institute near Harbin, not only Chinese, Koreans (or Koreans), and Soviets were used as specimens for live experiments, but also American soldiers captured during the Pacific War. All experimental data of Unit 731 were later appropriated by the United States.

Go to HK and find the tour agency right at the international airport. They can get you a proper tourist visa for 30-90 days overnight, and cost very reasonable.
