Today we explore Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which we believe to be Germany's best small town. This picture perfect small town feels like it popped right out of a fairy tale book. We explore the medieval Rothenburg tower walls, enjoy some traditional German food, and try some desserts specifically famous in Rothenburg.

I have never had a video make me so emotional like this. I grew up going to this village almost daily as a child. My dad was stationed at the Air Force base just next to this village. I can still recall the smell of the streets at Christmas time. I have countless pictures of playing around the statues and running around the wall. To hear that you love this place just as much as I do makes my memories even more cherished. Thank you for sharing this video. Gosh it brings tears to my eyes. I miss that country. ❤️

I loved Rothenberg when we were there, but it wasnt quiet at ALL. It was their yearly festival and we had to sleep one night in a room so small I swear it was a closet. But, we did it. The whole town was hopping. Busy crowded and wonderful! After seeing this, I now want to return and explore more of the city without hundreds of people all around. Thanks for bringing back those great memories! Looks like you all enjoyed yourselves there!

I lived near Rothenburg odT in the 1980s. It was a lovely place of course. One snowy day in February I was walking down the road there with another friend. It was snowing hard and as we walked someone approached us. As he neared we both started to think we recognized him. He got close, and sure enough it was a friend from back home, on the other side of the planet. We had no idea he was in Deutschland, let alone R-odT. What a sight it was.

We‘ve been to Rothenburg very often. You were lucky to find the town that quite. Usually it is crowded by tourists. Despite of these crowded experiences we love Rothenburg and will be going back when ever we pass by to spend a day. (Alf from Germany)

Glad you liked it in my hometown! It was so enjoyable to watch you guys being all excited about it. One small advice for your second visit regarding the Schneeballen (almost perfect pronounciation in the Video btw!): they are to be brocken in pieces to be eaten and not to be bitten into like an apple... At least i think it's a far superior eating experience that way ;-)

Beauty comes by imperfections. A flower is beautiful, not because it's perfect, but unique because of it's little flaws. A perfect moment is not this way because it's flawless but because it's unique. A picture of the family is not perfect when everyone poses perfectly but when it captures the family dynamic in a unique situation. In our family home we have an image of my father repairing our broke down car in Spain when we where on vacation there. We are all on that photo greasy and dirty and helping. My mom said that this is the perfect image of our family.

As a German I appreciate this very much, thank you! But it is important to plan a trip to Germany quite well, because the towns and places are VERY different - the north is completely different from the south and the towns also are quite different - there are very ugly towns as well but also a lot of pittoresque towns, in very different styles. I once had an english friend and when he came to Germany the first time he expected something like Rothenburg but his first step in Germany was one of the ugliest town in Germany and - you can imaging - he was completely shocked, because this was not what he expected and it took him some time to find out the nice places. And finally he found it, luckily. So planning before the trip can avoid some disappointments. I hope you enjoy your trip!

The weird thing is, there are a lot of those picture perfect towns in Europe. This one is beautiful but there are a lot more like it! The problem is that most people just visit the most touristic places and don't ever go to the smaller towns. Truth is, the most beautiful places can only be found by pointing to a random town on the map and just going there. Maybe that place will be disappointing but a lot of the time you'll find the most amazing little villages! I would also always recommend not going over the highway if you're traveling by car. Because if you drive across the small country roads you'll see a lot more of the things almost everybody else will never see.

I agree! Have lived in Franken and visited Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl oftentimes and they are pretty and have a great historical aspect but there are sooo many beautiful if not even more beautiful towns in Germany that are almost unknown. I moved to the Rhine and Black Forest area and man every little village and town looks like a Disney set. When I drive with my bike I discover so many cute places. Gengenbach and Schiltach are both absolutely beautiful for example. It's very close to the french Alsace so everything is full of the half timbered houses and flowers and little rivers. So much more than villages in Franken. The most beautiful thing is the scenery around them, so all the green hills and vineyards and forests surround those villages and therefore you can see so much nature even when walking through the pretty streets which adds so much.

Hey guys :) I would guess you can find 50 towns in Germany that are as great as Rothenburg. Rothenburg is amzing. All in different styles even. Small cities in Germany are usually not the ones that have been bombed too shreds in WW2 so there is really really cool old houses :) You can find great cute coastal cities that will remind you of Scotland or Ireland in the north with totally different arcitecture . You have small towns in the alps with huge mountain lakes like in switzerland. You have cities completly covered in wineyards on rivers in the west like in france and you have cute towns in small mountains in the east. :D Rothenburg is unique on tis own though and there is too many cities that you wont find in a travel book. Like with a lot of countries. Italys greatest cities and in greece are the ones you dotn find in a travelers guide :D THe Czech republic is also amazing. While I lived in the south east of the USA for a little time I really loved Charleston and then Ashville and it felt really great to me. Its cool to be able to see different things in different countries that can make you feel warm isnide and happy. PS: My personal opinion si that soemtimes the pictures that are not planned and are not perfect are the ones that shine the best. Especially for oneself if you remember the feeling you ahd when the picture was taken. And I believe that is what makes art special doesnt matter if its paintings, books, music, photos or movies. If the person who see or hears it is being drawn to the imperfect and to the feeling you had when making it. All the famous paintings are especially famous for their imperfection. Its the eyes and the smirk of the Mona Lisa that ake the painting its nothign else and that is what people see and feel. The most perfect picture is lets say picture nuber 3 of the shots before the playground of your wife and the girls. Frame that. Its perfect and natural. Also eating cakes made out of sand and realizing they taste terrible or falling of a swing or of somethign and breaking your arm sucks at the moment, but it shapes your personality and hwo you take riscs. It gives you natural boundaries that re important later in life.

May I add something from the perspective of a German? I am not from the Rothenburg area and I know it is a very touristy little place. Have been there as a tourist myself. Normal people live there, living ordinary lives. They are not aware of the town as some sort of "perfect" scenery. It is just normal to live in a place with lots of historical buildings. You yourself might have experienced this in other European countries, in Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal etc. Maybe Germany is different in some respect as no one would think of you as foreigners unless you start to speak. I wish you a very happy and safe stay in Germany and I sincerely hope that the not-so-nice people will stay away from you. Welcome in my country and have a wonderful time with lots of fun, especially for the girls ❤

Interesting question about perfection. As a designer and a fuji photographer I’ve never sought out perfection in my images. In fact I’ve collected vintage camera lenses like the Helios 44-2 in order to create character and imperfections. I’d agree think less about perfection and just capture the moment because that’s more memorable 😊❤

What is perfection? Something related to right composition, light, position, magazine smiles and poses? Something dictated by "the norm", by calculations, by social medias? Or something where you can be inspired by beautiful things and just express yourself, be the media between the real chaos that is life and the order of harmonious environment? My children taught me the last one is the one that sings true to me.

Much off Rothenburg was destroyed in WWII, much is rebuild, you see it, when you walk the wall around the city, there are little Plates, explaining who payed for the rebuild. Many houses look old, but are all Beton inside, only the front fits in the picture. Nördlingen or Dinkelsbühl are cities, which are as beautiful, not destroyed during the war.
