Is this ILLEGAL Motorcycle Law worth dying for? Episode 02. Lane splitting, where motorcyclists ride between lanes of slow-moving or stopped traffic, has both advocates and critics. Proponents argue it reduces traffic congestion by allowing motorcycles to move through gridlock, potentially decreasing overall commute times for all drivers. It can also enhance safety by reducing the risk of rear-end collisions in stop-and-go traffic, which is a common cause of accidents involving motorcycles. Moreover, lane splitting can lower emissions by preventing motorcycles from idling in traffic. However, opponents highlight the risks, citing potential for increased accidents due to limited visibility and the surprise factor for car drivers unaccustomed to sharing lanes. There's also concern that lane splitting could lead to reckless riding behavior if not properly regulated. The practice requires precise handling and heightened awareness, both from motorcyclists and car drivers, making it a contentious issue in traffic safety discussions.

Splitting in California has only recently been codified (2017). Before that, there was no law against it. I've been riding here for45+ years, and have always split or filtered as needed. Since the law was passed, drivers have slowly accepted bikes going past. Encounters with angry people have become the rare exception, rather than the rule. As Jes discovered in So-Cal, drivers pretty much ignore splitters, because bikes have split the freeways since the freeways were built. Same as up in the Bay Area. Every study, every research paper, have concluded that filtering and splitting are vastly safer for the rider. The most quoted study, was done by Cal State Berkeley (yes, THAT Berkeley, where fun and personal dreams go to die), who unequivocally found splitting to be safe. This study was the main basis for the legal arguments for the law. Sure, it's intimidating to work your way to the front of the line at a stop or light. Sure, if you've never gone between vehicles going 55, and your doing 65, it can be scary. But "scary" and "intimidating" do not reach the level of fear, pain, and loss that comes with a car smashing your ass into the bumper of the car ahead of you. Yes, too many abuse the privilege. Those same riders also abuse too many other riding rules, laws, and privileges. Click on my avatar, and check out one of my early videos, as I show you how to split legally, safely, and with confidence. Lane split laws are good tools for traffic, and rider safety. The CalTrans (state traffic safety and maintenance administration) numbers confirm the lowering of fatal collisions between cars and bikes. California has more licensed riders and registered bikes than ALL of Canada, and more than any other state, yet our biker fatality numbers have been dropping since 2017, showing that splitting is a good thing for riders and cars.

I was born and raised (and still live in) California. Moving over for motorcyclists is just what I'm used to doing! And while a car doesn't HAVE TO move over for a motorcycle to lane split, it is ILLEGAL for a car to impede a motorcycle's ability to lane split (riding on the line to keep a bike from splitting). I agree that there are definitely a lot of motorcyclists that abuse lane splitting (going too fast for the flow of traffic, for instance) but I do think it should be legal everywhere for pure safety reasons. I've also started telling my friends with kids to count motorcycle instead of slug bugs, I hope that becomes a norm!! It blows my mind that people's egos are so big that they don't want a motorcycle to pass them and will go out of their way to not let them pass.

I live in New York State, and lane splitting is illegal. Unfortunately, we live in a society where standing in line for services, etc. is part of everyday life. Many, if not most auto drivers here would consider lane splitting as cutting in line. Road rage incidents are on the rise, and I don't need anything to make motorcycling more dangerous for me than it is, especially now that half the public is carrying pistols. As a cyclist, it looks attractive, but "the juice may not be worth the squeeze."🤕👍🏾

Lane splitting is illegal here in Kansas. I agree filtering should be legal. My personal opinion is that motorcycle education should be part of driver's ED in all states. The written test to renew a driver's license should also include a couple of motorcycle questions. This would help raise motorcycle awareness.

Post Covid, Arizona did pass lane filtering at stop lights. Riding a Road Glide Special, filter can only be done on wider streets since not everyone is accustomed to bikes filtering at stoplights. Most of the time I filter to literally leave the aggressive lane changers stuck 5 or more cars back… it is sad to see how much getting a few cars ahead of those types of people just causes them to become more aggressive… but another comment made a reference to just in general how impatient all traffic has become since COVID. On average everyone seems to drive 10-15 over on all streets here in Tucson.

SoCal guy here. If traffic is at a standstill via city streets or highway/freeway, I'm fine with the Filtering to get yourself to the front of the pack. But if traffic is moving 20mph or more, filter/lane-splitting shouldn't be allowed. When on freeway/highway in a 65mph zone and traffic is doing 65-75mph, no need to lane split. Yet the idiots still do. Those riders misunderstand the lane splitting law. Or they just don't give a shit! Probably the latter.... You are more safer waiting in line at a stop light behind a car with a car approaching your 6 than your are lane splitting at speed on the highways!

Good to see Spite on your Vlog. Really enjoyed this series having recently purchased a 2024 Transalp and I live on the Central Coast of California. Lane splitting is a way of life riding in Ca. It can be hectic as I really have to stay focused but it is also safer and a lot better for the bike because you aren't constantly stopping and going. Bikes run cooler and save the clutch. When riding with my wife on the back it is also easier then the constant stop and go. I would really like to see all states give riders the option to lane split and filter.

Yes I absolutely agree filtering and lane splitting should be legal. It's definitely a safety issue, that's my number one concern on a motorcycle is getting rear-ended because there is very little you can do about it if you can't filter. And those who are concerned about lane splitting and driving up between cars, it is actually much easier for somebody in a car to see you in their side mirror when your lane splitting then it is for them to see you in the lane next to them because you're directly behind the mirror when lane splitting. From what I understand you are only supposed to Lane split in between the left two most Lanes. If highways are designed to give those two left most Lanes a touch more space... maybe even a double dashed line indicating that's where you're supposed to Lane split, that would help make it much safer for everybody.

Lane splitting SHOULD be legal! When I was stationed in San Diego (Navy), EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING (weekdays), the Coronado bay bridge was bumper-to-bumper traffic with everyone going to work on base. If you were a cager, you were always stuck in said traffic. However, for us motorcyclists, we could lane split and CAREFULLY scoot past everyone to get to the base gate MUCH faster, and safer, than if we had to share the bumper-to-bumper traffic. Now...are there idiots who have no business riding motorcycles? Hell yeah! But, should we ban lane-splitting because those morons can't control themselves? No. Or maybe, why not REVISE the law, so lane-splitting is ONLY LEGAL under a certain speed (e.g. if the overall traffic speed is slow, due to congestion). Also, make and ENFORCE laws that prevent cagers from willfully obstructing the lawful splitting of motorcycles (e.g. opening doors, maneuvering a car so close to another as to make splitting impossible) and allow motorcyclist camera footage in as evidence of wrongdoing, should no police officer be present (camera must also clearly show road name, mile marker, etc., to identify when and where offense occurred). Just a couple thoughts, as I'm sure people smarter than me can come up with an effective way to legalize lane-splitting, while minimizing risk to riders and cagers alike.

Sorry dahlin, I'm no young beginner. I'm an old fart that's been on two wheels for almost 53 years. I've not done a lot of riding in Cali so I didn't get used to lane splitting early on. That and the fact that most motorists here around Tennessee seem to take it as a challenge makes me lets say less confident about it. I've done lane filtering now and then if caught in traffic jams for accidents on the interstate and the number of people that will move to block you makes me hesitant to take advantage though I do at times.

The problem with the argument of "motorcyclists taking responsibility for their own actions" is that when things go wrong, the motorcyclist (or, for that matter, any driver in general, up to and including CDL drivers) will deny any responsibility for what went wrong, no matter whether or not they were in fact responsible. It's a level of selfishness that I've seen across the nation, and it ranks up there with what I call "Gandalf syndrome", where a driver will do anything they can to keep another driver from passing them, and ever-popular "Must Be In Front" attitude.

Here in Australia it's legal to lane split up to 18.6 miles per hour. But most motorcyclists lanesplit at high speeds regardless of max speed . Unfortunately this gives motorcyclists a bad reputation for riding dangerous. Some essentially create their own lane between the cars which exploits the lane splitting rule.

Perth, Western Australia. Our laws are pretty specific. You can't lane split over 30kph or next to a semi-trailer. Most people just let you move through. I personally won't filter to the lights on a double turn lane, I tend to pull up a car or two back from the lights. Our weather is like Southern California though and it is way too hot to sit still in traffic in gear. Cars have air conditioners and you can drive in a T-shirt. Just let the poor bastard on the motorbike through.

I started on 2 wheels in the 1960's. I rode in different states and thought that it was open season on bikers. The general public was blind to motorcycles at the time and no matter how alert or careful I was I still had to zig and zag and panic brake to stay alive. Now that there are idiots that feel that they can multitask on their cell phones and would drift in my lane or pull out in front of me I even had to install air horns on my truck. Until if and when there are stiff laws to protect bikers the only way that I would lane split, if it were legal, would be if traffic was stopped at a light and that would probably be potentially dangerous because some dummy would probably open a door or decide, for some reason, change lanes.

I did a little lane splitting while in Cali but one thing I noticed is the lanes are wider, people know what lane splitting is about and tended to give me room but I didn't feel comfortable doing it. In other states most drivers don't know about it. Here in Texas I have motor hiked between cars when stuck in stop and go traffic but had drivers pinch together to prevent me from doing so. I really don't think it would work in states that have narrow road lanes and super aggressive drives. Nationwide: filtering yes, lane splitting no.

Here in Tasmania, Australia, lane splitting is illegal, but we can lane filter in slow moving traffic up to a max traffic flow of 40km/hr. Although, to a lot of Tasmanians basic merging means getting raged at for "cutting me off", so lane filtering is an added risk of getting angry drivers. I've personally had a car see me filtering and swerved his car to block me from filtering and other cars would start rolling at the lights to try and push me out of "their spot" 🙃. I think cagers would find any excuse to rage at a motorcycle rider just for existing, but I reckon lane filtering at least should be legal everywhere.

So I am of two minds on this. I learned to ride while visiting China where lane filtering, lane splitting or just creating a lane where one doesn't exist, like say a sidewalk (they have incredibly large sidewalks most places, designed to have riders on them) works perfectly fine. Its an awesome system. But, most of the time I live in Tennessee where motorcyclists and cyclists are routinely and specifically targeted and run off the road or just run over on purpose. All of this gives me a somewhat unique pov. The reason this is not legal in the U.S. is because there are almost no motorcyclists (about 10 million mostly weekend riders) and there are massive resources for riders in China because they have 350 million daily riders. That means that car riders are all fully aware that riders are going to be there all the time. The other thing is in China, people ride bikes from birth, literally and they have an entire life of being on a bike prior to even learning how to ride. Many U.S. riders have far less experience. The typical grandma riding her two or three grand kids to school would be able to out ride the vast majority of riders in the U.S. I am not saying this to pit U.S. riders against Chinese riders, the fact is where lane splitting is the most heavily used, the riders have a lot of experience in doing it. What all this means is that in the U.S. we would have relatively inexperienced occasional riders legally lane splitting or filtering (most won't know the difference) through traffic that hates the fact that someone is passing them and will probably intentionally do things to hurt riders.

In the UK, it is "legal as long as you don't cause a problem", and you're not supposed to go very fast - I think it is no more than 30 mph. Not saying I haven't gone faster than that between two cars - I often prefer to pass between two cars rather than "undertaking" (going past on the wrong side) because there's less risk - they will crash into the other car if they try to change lane [UK drivers being sane enough that they don't generally intentionally crash into other road users]

When I moved to California ten years ago I was initially startled by filtering/splitting bikes riding past my cage. The first time I tried it myself was a bit sphincter-clentching, but I now view it much the same way Spite talks about here - it's an advantage motorcyclists have because they are disadvantaged in so many other ways, especially when it comes to safety. Once we run out of real estate to keep widening highways and roads, maybe more people will consider two wheels over four (?)

I definitely agree with filtering, however given the short riding season in Wisconsin, where we have to remind drivers to look twice for motorcycle riders, I don't believe lane splitting would be effective. And we have smaller cities, with less rush hour.

Here in Colorado, a law legalizing lane filtering goes into effect in sometime in August. I have been having conversations with friends who ride and friends who don't, both in person and on Facebook. Lane splitting is still technically illegal, but I have noticed a lot of smaller bikes splitting lanes recently. I don't know if I would filter even after I technically can. I drive a big truck for a living and there are people who don't see my daily driver that is 36 ft long, 13 ft high and 8 ft wide.

Filtering and splitting should be legal. But riders will also have to understand it will take a generation for it to be really "accepted" (like new drivers always experiencing it and perhaps taking advantage of it if they also ride). And until that generation passes it will be more dangerous for riders who are mixing with older drivers who have only known splitting/filtering to be "wrong" (and however they act against it). In the short/medium terms that could mean more riders killed in road-rage incidents, or inattentive lane-changes... than those saved from rear-end collisions. So making it legal could be a very literally painful change.

How many people actually take driver education classes? People are so distracted with their cell phones too. As a motorcyclist since 1975 and also spending 27 years driving a large straight truck, I would be reluctant to even think of lane splitting unless it was my only escape route. I totally understand the fear and discomfort of being stuck in traffic with any vehicle behind me.

Lifetime Cali rider here. Legalize lanesplitting nationwide but also add it to rider education as a training topic and also make sure it makes it into driver education for the 4-wheel community as well so there's an opportunity to train car drivers regarding appropriate response to a splitting rider.

Where I live in Australia , lane filtering is allowed under certain circumstances, basically outlined by Josh (Spite). I must admit at times it can be disconcerting to see a large motor cycle filtering or attempting to filter between, because sometimes the person riding the motorcycle , struggles with the bike at low speeds.

Splitting and filtering should legal. I used to not, but I’ve grown more confident in my ability to handle my Ninja in slow traffic. Now mind you, I try to keep it under 15mph faster than the traffic I’m passing. If drivers do look, it gives them more chance to see me and me more time to react if they don’t. I also won’t split at or above the speed limit. I’m just trying to get through slow traffic safely, not beat the Google eta.

It is illegal here in Massachusetts. Here in MA, cars are changing lanes all the time (back and forth) in stop and go traffic trying to get a few feet ahead of the next guy, so it is pretty dangerous for bikes splitting lanes here. (It is pretty tough for the air cooled bikes having to sit in traffic as they tend to overheat if they can't keep moving on hot days.)

100% filtering should be legal in all 50 states. Some places wouldn't really benefit from splitting. Like where I live in Idaho doesn't have enough people to really make lane splitting worth it, but filtering at lights would be beneficial for the increased safety for riders.

Yes it should be legal all over the USA. We are lucky and privileged to be able to do it in California, but it is important to do it safely and not just race through., have respect for other road users and understand it's a privilege of riding a motorcycle. Some riders act like it's a god given right and don't take into consideration if a driver sees you coming or not. This action is not for new riders and probably not for visitors out of state, you have to be very calculated and comfortable manoeuvring your bike quickly in potentially very tight situations that come up super quick, it's a skill that gets better with time. Like anything else, do you, don't worry what other people say, just be safe.

I got comfortable lane splitting and filtering at around 6 months after riding here in San Diego. I do it sometimes, but not all the time. Only when I feel it is safe and there is enough room for my bagger. I do shake my head at the squids continuing to split at speeds above 40 mph or so. It just makes the rest of us bare the disdain that is created from it. We are ALREADY getting ahead of everyone else, do we really need to egg them on even more?

We can split lanes in Victoria Australia, I ride a Pan Am, commuting everyday on the freeway 24km into the city from the suburbs, lane splitting is tolerated by most cars, only some idiots try to squeeze you, and their mirrors meet my barkbusters. I have been riding 45 years on the road, I have only been sideswiped by a car once and they regretted it because I was on my 1988 Lowrider, I just leaned into them, my highway pegs scratched the shit out of their panels, I didn't come off (then I have done a lot of vintage motorcross racing, where your bounce of each other a lot).

No to lane splitting. Filtering yes. Motorist Education at testing. Signage on roadways. Installing a lightweight highly effective Brake Free high lumen LED helmet light. Creates so much more rearward awareness. Not many are using this awesome reasonably priced safety device. Especially if you ride slim ADV, Sport or other and prefer bad ass black & browns. Last would be high lumen LED motorcycle lighting. Companies like Custom Dynamics and Ciro have made steps & design progress in it’s product offerings. All easy to install and help to be seen. As motorcyclist we can do much better for ourselves. Distracted cell phone and in-car tech cagers will forever be our arch enemies. Even at simple cross-walks, pedestrians still manage to get hit at high numbers as drivers blow late yellow and red lights. Totally unaware or regardless of flashing pedestrian signage. Awesome convo. Many Safe miles of smiles. Deuces!

In the UK I will always filter if it's safe to do so, most of the time car drivers will just move over and let you through to filter, it's encouraged here to stop you getting rear ended, ride steady and stay safe all.
@PTE1957
@PTE1957 4 месяца назад
The way I see filtering is that you can use the space between vehicles to progress through traffic at a speed that allows you to move. But any speed more than that is not safe. This is because people don’t expect it and at a faster speed you can’t make a stop quick enough to keep you safe. Some drivers never look when they change lanes, some see you and don’t want you to go by, so you need to keep your speed down to avoid the idiot that you find everywhere. So when traffic is congested, being able to pass between vehicles at a slow speed keeps you moving and keeps you safe.

My husband was hit from behind by a guy going at least 40 and never slowed down. He was at a red light. THANKFULLY, he was in his big work van. He said it sounded like an explosion and the first thing he thought was if he was on his motorcycle, he would be dead. We both watch every time we have to stop because of that accident. We sit in the middle of the lane instead of right behind a car. Safety first!!!

Filtering not only should be legal, but should actually be incentiveated because It's just safer. Lane splitting is a bit trickyer because I've seen many reckless motorcyclists hauling ass and ziggzagging around cars on slow/stopped traffic. On those circumstances changing lines is a very slow process that cuts off the spliting lanes. If a motorcyclist is going super fast or coming from behind cars due to ziggzagging, it's very easy for drivers to miss them and accidentally cut them off. I'm a motorcyclyst myself, but also a car and truck driver. I see bikers blaming cagers for their own irresponsibility a lot. I think that's the reason many countries and states don't make it legal, they simply don't trust us to be responsible about it because many aren't, and we all have to pay for it.

I live in NC and I'll settle for filtering at the very least. Splitting seems kinda nerve racking but if it becomes legal, I'll definitely give it a try. We need more riders on the roads if we want something to change. My commute is 30 mins each way and I'll only see 1 or 2 motorcycles if I'm lucky.

Lane filtering is done at Traffic lights ti move to the front to protect against being rear ended. Lane splitting is done during slow moving or stopped traffic most especially on HWYS. Splitting was done to help motorcyclist from over heating sitting in slow traffic or traffic jam.

I live in SoCal, originally from Texas. Honestly, filtering and lane splitting should be legal and encouraged, and drivers should be educated and aware of its benefits. Perhaps, we would see more people on bikes as a result. Either way, it saves me a ton of time, I have shaved off up to an hour and a half off of longer rides and the entire time, I was doing no more than 10mph over the speed of traffic. The benefit is great though, we can commute quicker, we are not creating traffic, and it is one less car on the road. Most cars only have one occupant, that is a lot of space and weight to move someone from point A to point B for many scenarios. I am a big fan of personal mobility and micro mobility and I feel that a change of attitude and an integrated approach would improve transportation throughout our cities, if not around the nation.

I live in NYC area and its illegal in NY to split/filter. I generally won't split when cars are traveling greater than say 15-20 mph or so. In dead stop and go traffic I'll split and really won't go above 15-20mph myself because I believe that gives me a bit of reaction time and gives cars an opportunity to see us coming up on them. Many guys on bikes will fly by and even I who is always looking for bikes have been caught off guard. In a practical sense, many roads, traffic lanes around here are too narrow to allow more safe splits. Roads are older and built to a different standards so there's a bit less room to squeeze through. Overall I'd like it legalized but at the same time create some sort of safety guidance for all (cars and MC's) to follow and understand.
@paulcho8949

It's illegal to lane-split in my state. But I've visited CA enough to form an opinion. I don't have a problem with the initial reason for it. It's hot, traffic is not moving, and I have an air-cooled motor. Also on super-elevated curves, it's hard to balance a full dress tour bike at crawl speeds. So when bikes lane-split at reasonable speeds, I think it works great. But after 35mph, there is no need for lane-splitting. I would also limit how much faster a bike is allowed to go than the prevailing speeds as the differential in speeds is what causes all sorts of confusion and risk.

Hey Jess! I just finished your video about lane splitting and can honestly say after doing what I have for the last twenty years, and seeing things I cannot unsee, I would say that lane splitting is THE worst thing you can do. Yes, it would be great to just zip up between cars that are completely stopped, however, you will always, and I do mean ALWAYS, have that one moron who thinks his poop don't stink get all bent out of shape because someone is going to make it home for supper. You also mentioned driver's ed courses at some point. Of course, you are anticipating that some teenager is actually paying attention, which they aren't. The lane filtering I do agree with. If you perceive that there will be an unhappy ending to a situation, get out of that situation. Sorry, doll, but that's my two cents. Oh, and tell Jordan hello from the bayous of Louisiana!! Bye now!
