1:32 Worth noting that speakers with bass reflex ports on the back and not front will suffer from being put right against a wall.

Good video. Well done. It is generally better in a small room to have the monitors in very nearfield position. This maximizes the amount of direct sound from the monitors compared to reflected sound.

Man you're making our lives so much easier thanks for the videos and for this chanel !!! By the way I always wonder while watching your videos: what are those monitors(screens) that you have ? Two 32inch stacked???
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity Год назад
Yes. They are 27” monitors. It helps me get a lot of screen space without completely blocking the sound from my studio monitors. Although, as another commenter mentioned, they still interfere with the sound somewhat. I like the stack because I can put the mix window on the bottom and the edit window on the top.

Great video! It should help a lot of people set up their home desks. My hardware is similar to your own. I'm using Tascam's Model 24 rather than the Model 12 though. I also chose the fantastic T7Vs as monitors (they deserve a discussion of their own) but I did add an HS8S sub with an easy toggle on/off switch for tracking/mixing the occasional really low frequency content. As mentioned in another comment, since the Adams are rear-ported I did pull mine away from the wall a little bit though to allow them to breathe. Thanks for all you do. You are making independent production better! * edited to correct typo

Great video. Can you please do a video regarding the benefits of using a subwoofer? There’s seems to be a grey area for their use when mixing. Some say they aren’t necessary while others swear by them. Most professional studios have them. Thanks
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity Год назад
Great suggestion! My understanding is that they of course extend the frequency range of the system, but may cause more problems than they are worth in small rooms.
@clicks59

@@AudioUniversity maybe do a mix comparison between something that was mixed with a sub in a large room vs a small room? It’s great to know what is actually going on in the frequencies that your near field monitors are not capable of reproducing. There may be artifacts that could be missed.
@MrVleker
@MrVleker Год назад
Theoretically, Studio monitors are supposed to be full range. This means that you don't need a subwoofer to display the lowend. In 5.1 or 7.1 systems they are used when mixing audio for movies, which is why they are in studios. Sound effects are often send to the sub for extra impact. In real life, smaller speakers usually go to 40-60hz so you miss a little bit of low end. You can compensate for this by checking in a room with larger monitors or by using headphones. You can also add a sub but it's not so common to use subwoofers for mixing.

How do the ISO stands not transmit vibrations themselves?
@walidabdelal
@walidabdelal Год назад
The idea is to dissipate the vibration energy by converting it to a potential energy through a spring action (elastic structure)
@jeffallen3382
@jeffallen3382 Год назад
@@walidabdelal I understand what the idea is. I'm wondering how these stands stop the vibrations themselves. They look to possibly be plastic? Won't that just transmit vibration? Even if they are of a different material?
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity Год назад
They are constructed with metal, rubber, and plastic from what I can tell. I believe the idea is to transfer the energy to and from different materials to allow it to dissipate more before being transferred to the desk or stand.

The metal rods only touch the inners, whose are made of mid-soft rubber*, and have a space in the above plate upward, and downward in the below, allowing the surface poked by rod to travel unobtrusively, thus dissipating the waves efficiently. The same principle as with microphone shock mounts.

Super Information, but in my mini-home-studio it’s not possible to place the speakers at the short side of the wall, because there is a door to a balcony on one side and the entrance to the room on the other side. Moreover the wall behind me is only about one meter away from where I sit. So it‘s a very narrow room. That‘s the reason, why I mainly mix with headphones …

I have been having a huge problem with setup. I’m not sure if it’s my interface or speakers. For some reason my left speaker is always louder than the right. I switch the speaker and the same thing goes on. My left side is always louder. Do you know of any solution of this @AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity
@AudioUniversity Год назад
Is there a sensitivity switch or volume knob on the speakers? Also check that the cable is not the problem.
@Vela_Isai
@Vela_Isai Год назад
@@AudioUniversity i appreciate your response. I have tried everything. Switched cables. Got newer ones. Even bought a pair of auratone speakers and the same thing happens. It could be the interface but the last time I contacted Universal Audio they said nothing was wrong because I sent them a stereo file of my LR outputs. I’ve given up for now but am always still looking for a way when possible.

@isaivelasquez3878 I have the same issue but on the other side, I think it has to do with room interaction given all the experimentation I've done already.
@teashea1
@teashea1 Год назад
Instead of using an adaptor it is better to purchase a cable with the right plugs on each end. TRS to SLR cables are readily available. Conectors cause trouble and degrade the sound.

Most people have too big speakers for the room and alot of phasing issues and bad acoustics. Thats asking for problems. Because it sounds loud will not say it sounds good. Its all in the midrange forget your subs 💯🎶

Program power is a doubling of the continuous power. It’s a quick spec for adhering to the guideline I shared in that video: “Choose an amp that can deliver about twice the continuous power rating of the speaker”.
