Genelec is a brand that I have turned to for speakers for decades! I have been using Genelec's 1032A's religiously since the 1990's, and have used them for most of my professional life.
Today, I am testing out Genelec's 8351B Speakers, and have the incredible Steffenee from Genelec joining me to help take me through the amazing features of these speakers, as well as show me how I can properly set them up in a studio.
With a upgraded high-frequency driver and more powerful integrated amplifiers, Genelec's 8351B is a noticeable improvement on the original 8351A model. These 3-way studio monitors combine dual 8" woofers with a 5" midrange speaker and a 1" high-frequency dome tweeter. Thanks to its ACW (Acoustically Concealed Woofer) design, the 8351B offers the kind of broad sweet spot engineers here at Sweetwater look for, while Genelec's unique DCW (Directivity Control Waveguide) delivers precision stereo imaging. On top of all of this, you also get the benefits of Genelec's SAM (Smart Active Monitor) technology, which lets you automatically calibrate your 8351B studio monitors to any control room or speaker configuration.
The 8351B's dual 8" woofers employ Genelec's innovative Acoustically Concealed Woofers (ACW) to extend their coaxial acoustical radiation concept to bass frequencies. Hidden inside the monitor's cabinet, these woofers use the entire front baffle as a giant Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) to control directivity over a very wide bandwidth, creating a massive sweet spot. It also provides phenomenal separation from the 8351B's Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) driver, which reproduces midrange and high frequencies. The result is incredibly accurate monitoring with unparalleled frequency separation, a wide dispersion pattern, and unbelievable imaging.
These days, it's not unusual for an engineer to work in a small, less-than-perfect acoustical environment. Genelec's Smart Active Monitor (SAM) technology takes this into account by allowing the 8351B to automatically calibrate its level, timing, and equalization to your room, ensuring that you hear the original nuances of your source accurately, without color or distortion. By using the highly-intuitive Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software, you can control an entire network of 8351B, giving you a highly-flexible computer-controlled system of monitors and subwoofers.
The 8351B features Genelec's Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) with rounded edges and a gently curved front and sides. This allows the 8351B to achieve a very smooth frequency response and superb imaging qualities with minimized cabinet edge diffraction.

I am really wondering: How did adding the sub got rid of that roommode? The Correction couldn't handle it before, but it seemed to be better after adding the sub? I mean, that is why you chose the crossover quite high, isn't it? Also: Where is the sub placed?

After you’ve had some time with them I’d love to hear how they compare to the Trio11s. In fairness you should apply tuning to the Trios as well (e.g. Sonarworks).

I've also been on the 1032As since they were new. This is a long time to work with a pair of monitors and I know them inside out, but I'm building a new, bigger room to work in and starting to think about upgrading. Thoughts on how you're getting on with them Warren, would be great. Is it subtle, or are they making you you do some things differently? Is there anything which stands out as missing from your old monitors? And that sort of stuff! Would be interested to know. Ta!

27:57 ...and this is one of the many reasons we love this channel so much. Historically, Warren's preference was to mix without a sub. "Now that (he's) heard with the sub, (he) doesn't think (he'll) mix without the sub." Always learning, always growing and always passing it along to us. So nice to see the constant pursuit of excellence and open-mindedness where audio perspectives are concerned on full display here. Thank you Warren (and Eric!) and Stephanie!

I mix on NS10's, I've owned Genelec and tried so many speaker's over the years... It's always exciting and I keep getting interested in new brands and technology... 20 years later, and I'm still on my NS 10's... It just didn't made that much of a difference. For recording sessions, with the musicians in the controlroom, it's nice to have big and loud speakers... For me personally, my greatest advance was when I stopped searching, for the perfect studio monitors and started trusting my ears instead. 😄

Thanks for another great video Warren. I know you'll love the Gennys more and more as you tune in to them. I've been using the 8361A speakers in my mastering studio for a few months now. My previous speakers were PMC IB1S (passive, driven by two Bryston 14B amps). As much as I loved the PMCs the Genelecs are IMHO a more accurate speaker, even before applying the Genelec room calibration. And the imaging of the Gennys....SUPERB! The Genelec room correction software is great. I LOVE being able to switch the stored listening positions! That way clients can hear the balance of the master more accurately from their sitting position. I was so impressed that I bought a pair of 8030C to use for on location recordings in halls and auditoriums so the artists can review a take if they need to. And also as an extra listening reference for me, in addition to headphones. Genelec...kiitos upeista kaiuttimista.

Dips around 100Hz and below are due to phase issues with the front wall. It's actually recommended to keep the monitors closer to the wall - that will result in a little base buildup (correctable by EQ) and the phase issues will be higher (medium acoustic treatment takes care of them). Low phase issues (caused by distance to the front wall) are very hard to treat with absorbers and are NOT correctable by EQ. The same situation is in Warren's room. Luckily, the sub saves the day but this monitors would've been enough in correct positioning. PS: GLM can't do nothing about dips since it only uses subtractive EQ - but even if it were using additive EQ, it could not correct them.

I must admit that I always disliked that "genelec sound". The sound of the 90ies Genelecs, just like the ones you had before, Warren. That being said I strolled around at an audio convention and waited next to the Genelec booth, because I wanted to listen to a panel which was about to start. Than a guy from Genelec approached me and I was actuallly looking for new monitors. I told him right away that I liked his kind attitude and the company, but I never liked their products. But I know that there are a lot of audio people who like them and it's all good. I am more a Klein & Hummel (now belongs to Neumann, but still basically the same team of engineers) or Geithain type of person, maybe also ATC or PSI. He told me he knows about this, ppl either loving or hating that "Genelec sound". But he invited me to just give that new series a try. I did just that and came over every single day, convention was 4 days, just to enjoy the Ones. Fantastic! I brought my own material, CDs I liked and such. I met Aki Mäkivirta, who is both very knowledgeable and kind, too. We ended up with two sets of two 8331 and a 7360 subwoofer, both were calibrated with the GLM system. I could not be happier! And not only is that series totally different compared to the older series' I always ran away from. Genelec is really a great company. The use green energy in their factory in Finland, they are happy people and not like some other pretty arrogant companies out there. One in particular; I like their products, but not their attitide. So I would not buy anything from them. Maybe from the used market, but not new. But, now Genelec blessed us with the Ones and I am not even looking for anything else. Great choice, Warren 😎 I think the GLM system should be a standard with the speakers, they should just include it and adjust the price. Our rooms were pretty flat already, but GLM also adjusts the link between the satellites (8331) and the subwoofer (7360). After those adjustments, the sub feels very "integrated", not a separate speaker, the whole system works perfectly like a unit. Soundwise, the system is pretty honest ;-) Shitty mixes sounds aweful, fine details can be heard easily and when you have a great production, those speakers deliver just that. Absolutely stunning. Really. Top notch.

Thanks guys, great video. Cheers from Canada. On my GLM set up I have left the calibration mic hanging over my head. That way when I click on GLM4 it shows me an SPL reading. I find that the Genelec's are so clean that they get loud before I notice really how loud they are. So this helps keep me in check for those times when I'm getting carried away. I realize that being several feet above my head the SPL reading isn't 100% accurate, but that's not the point - it's there to give me a quick ballpark check. Have fun with your new monitors!

The most insightful part of the video for me was from 12:30 to 13:30. There is so much more depth these days with everyone using limiting and multiband compression, and dynamic EQ's, todays music, every thing is more forward. So you need monitors that can provide this detail. After getting updated monitors, he wished he could remix some sessions he had as with new newer monitors as they are allowing him to hear things he did not hear with the other monitors. I found the same thing when I compared my Focal Twins to the ATC ACM 25a's. It would be nice to hear an update on how your getting along with the newer Genelec's and perhaps some of the many pros and maybe a con compared to your old monitors. If your using a Genelec subwoofer, does the 8351B's have any advantage over their smaller 8341's that also could use the subwoofer?

I think everybody will recognize this: When you buy new (better!) speakers, most of the time I think: "My old speakers sounded better". That is not because they WERE better, but because you have been listening to them for such a long time, that your ears have become used to the sound they produce. In general it takes time to get used to new (and better!) speakers.

Not sure what the solution here is because every room is different BUT I am so happy with the null gone.

I'm getting a set of the 8351B very soon. They will be replacing my little 8040B. Already have a Genelec sub and the GLM system. I've done a TON of research on monitors and I'm stoked to be getting the new Genelecs. It's difficult to go wrong with Genelec. I too have been using Genelec for about 20 years.

@@Vocalisto I did get them last September. The 8351B are as expected: Awesome. There is no doubt that they have a high price tag, but as with most things, you get what you pay for. The little 8040B are no slouches. They too have impressive clarity. Would I buy the 8351B again? Yes...without hesitation.

Wow, nice! I think you're going to love them. Monitor tech has come a long way since the 1990s (when my older Event TR-8 monitors were also made). I went for Neumann KH 120 A monitors here with the KH 750 subwoofer. MASSIVE difference new-to-old. Hope you manage to get used to them quickly enough. :) The room correction will flatten off that low-mid console bump, but the clarity of newer monitor tech will definitely compensate. It's literally night and day. Thanks for the video Warren. :) P.S. Do get a subwoofer! The newer sub technology is so much better. They're linearised across their full range using DSP, and are phase-compensated + time-aligned too. I'd never go back to my old subwoofer, which sounded like a wet cardboard box. The new one... It sounds so flat out-of-the-box, right down to 18Hz! Well worth the money. Makes mixing/mastering low lows a breeze. _EDIT: Oh, you did get one! :)_

@imbecile Aww, I'm so sorry! I've been there, mixing on computer speakers, then moving onto hifi speakers I found in a trash heap (connecting them to the outputs of the computer speakers), then some cheap 2nd hand 70s hifi speakers donated to me, then sooooo many more in between what I have now. It's always a constant upgrade path - that never seems to end, as technology keeps evolving!

Excellent, and amazing timing, since I just picked up my first ever pair of Genelec’s today. Admittedly more humble than the beasts you unveiled, but I really love my new 8010A’s (in white ). They sound amazing, and because of this I am indeed doing marvelously well ….🙂

Those dips at around 100Hz are phase issues from the front wall and are due to the position of the monitors. Cannot be corrected with EQ, only with thick heavy absorption on the front wall. The sub saved the day taking those frequencies out of the monitors.

This is some seriously cool software - and VERY user-friendly for such a high-end piece of hardware. One day my goal is to own a pair of the highest of The Ones: the 8361A studio monitors. They're about as perfect as you can get from the size of the speaker. Eventually, I would potentially build up enough of a collection to use them in a full Atmos surround setup. That would be absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

Your comment of these new speakers showing more mix problems is a good thing, I like it when speakers will reveal if there is too much biting 3-4k on electric gtrs which needs to be tamed, great review as always! I am hoping to hear these in my area where I live

It's both a blessing and a curse, since the amount of problems you may spot with good studio monitors is basically endless. You just get to a point where you find yourself running in circles and that's when you know your work is done. At least that's how it's been for me.

Although there's a huge difference in price, I'm very interested in how do you think about these vs the Kali IN series speakers. Considering They're both concentric design and Kali claims their speakers to be an acoustic point source while the Genelec is a real point source.

@Zack Darce depends on your budget. The first and most important thing is to setup your room´s acoustic treatment (bass traps, diffusers, absortion panels, etc) then and only then you can focus on your monitors. I currently have the LP6´s in my room and I´m really happy with them, but if you want a 3 way speaker for more detail and you have the budget for it, go for it. cheers
@hl321662
@hl321662 3 года назад
@Zack Darce If you’re worried about room size, you could also consider the IN-5, I’m currently using a pair and they’re really good. If your room is well-treated then the size of them IN-8 shouldn’t be a problem.

Years ago, when the Roland V-Piano was the hot thing out, I went by the Guitar Center here in Nashville. They had it ran through some Genelec's with a sub. It was the first time I'd ever heard of Genelec. I was so blown away. I never forgot the name and they were forever burned into my brain. I am now in the market to upgrade my monitors that I play my keyboard through. Any suggestion? Great video. The representative from Genelec was very knowledgeable. Thanks Warren!

Depending on monitor placement in your room, listening distance, + type of work you are doing, a sub may not be needed. A great aspect of GLM is that you can see the response of your monitors in your room & decide to reposition for a better response or add a sub later, if so desired. We work hard to supply all of our product demand in a timely manner & will work closely with your authorized Genelec reseller to get you your SAM sub when you're ready. Thanks for watching!
