This video is going to tell you all about one of the Jeep and Offroad world’s best kept secret. The Dana 300 transfer case. This little gem is cheap, available, has a bunch of aftermarket support and options. It will work with a number of different transmissions and work on both driver and passenger drop front axles. It has customizable gear ratios, it’s SUPER strong, AND you can have that twin stick option and do those fun front digs too.

The old gear drive transfer cases that can be twin sticked are no joke. The Dana 18, 20 and 300. The NP 205 is serious beef, but the low range isn't great. Doublers mate the low range box of one case to another; such as an NP203/205 doubler..... A Rubicrawler box replaces the transmissions tailshaft housing. This doesn't give seperate front and rear output on a JK, or any other Jeep with a 42rle transmission, it will give double low range or low range rear wheel drive..

For sure! The only downside to that though is usually the cost of buying two cases and the. Mating them together…and then having it be super heavy and big. But there are tons of options.

I have one of those in my garage waiting for me to get off my ass and get back to working on my YJ. It will be going behind a 5.3L and NV4500 trans and has a behemoth twin stick flip kit. These are getting hard to find now day and people who have them tend to want $1k+.

I like the majority of your vids but this one... kinda screams misinformation to me. I'm a CJ guy so I've had a fair share of D300s. 1 they're getting harder to find 2 they have not so strong input/output shafts. 3 unless they doubled in price this year, an atlas can be had for 2700 4 you don't mention the cost of an adapter or of the gearsets You're putting it in a CJ so it makes sense, probably came with it. For someone thinking they've found a new , cheaper tcase to have a secret edge... the cost of building one for anything other than a CJ, and including a CJ when you factor in you basically need to go aftermarket everything, except the case, is surpassing the cost of an atlas.

An atlas is $2,850 for the base…you can get a Dana 300 for $600 used or $2000 rebuilt instantly saving you almost 1k or more. Then, when you add the gears you want the price of the atlas instantly jumps up another $900 (gears are cheaper for the d300). Plus the cost of yokes and everything else like the shifters. So all in on a “built d300” you’ll be more than 1k cheaper than an atlas. And out of the box it is WAY stronger than factory options. All things have weaknesses at some point. Of course parts of this case could be stronger. And they do make parts to have them be even stronger. Yes I’m putting it in a CJ, but no, it didn’t come with it. And I didn’t put the cost of the gear sets because like I said in the video, im not regearing it…for now. But they are still cheaper even with the gears and a rebuilt d300 than an atlas. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So did some quick pricing...found nice flip kit...700, just rear output shaft...510, 4 to 1 gears...845...over 2k and didn't even buy the d300 yet. I know your happy with the idea but man that a lot of coin for what it is

They work great. Keep in mind that depending on what vehicle you are swapping it into it will add some cost. But it’s a great option.

Sorry but there is no planetary gear in the dana 300. It's just standard gears with an idler between them. You can also get a 4:1 gear sets for them. There are also kits that will make it a 3 speed tcase using the planetary set from a np231 tcase infront of the 300. Which makes the outputs about the same position as a stock np231. If you swap to just a d300 you need longer rear and shorter front driveline

Yea I called it the wrong thing…it happens. And as far as driveline goes…it just depends on what you are doing with axles and where you are putting them with your suspension set up. So many options…but the people that know that didn’t need to hear me talk about it.

It’s no harder to swap to a jk than it is to make it driver drop on a CJ. Anytime you swap to a non factory t case you need custom driveshafts, a transmission adapter, and in this case also a flip kit. They make those things for the jk in order to bolt in the d300 as well.

@WarPaintOffroad I understand what your trying to say however it is way different to put into a jk than a cj. Flip kit $950....rebuild kit...yokes...ect all add up. Makeing it work with all the modern electronics = $. It's the same argument as f250 axles to say a set of dynatracs. People know about the 300...most just pass on it do to total cost vs return

I was sitting here thinking "oh no, he is putting that in the JK, this should be a slow 6 episode train wreck". For the other rig, oh ok, sure i guess, many other better options but ok. In my area those never go for under than $1000 and they are next to impossible to find. Looked just now and not a single one, i had a CJ and it needed a 300, couldn't ever find one, people always wanted 1000$ if you could find one and they looked like they came out of a swamped Jeep.

Not where I am. And I’m surprised to hear you say there is a better choice tbh. You can’t get better than a Dana 300. Doesn’t sound like you are a fan. And that’s fine….makes the world go round. But there is a reason they have so much support. And you don’t seem to be able to find them and when you can they are expensive. People like them. But there are 3 currently for sale near me and not one for over $600 right now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@WarPaintOffroad never said I didn't like them... Said I couldn't find them. I'd take an Atlas over one in my JK and pricing compared the Atlas is a much better option for only a little more. Everything needed for the 300 and it won't be the right thing to put in a JK. Again I thought you were putting it in the JK, I have a JK. I sold the CJ years ago and haven't considered a 300 since. Again for your crawler the 300 will be 🤘👍

Not to mention they leak from the shifter rails when flipped and you have to plug factory vent and install your own

For sure. Just keep in mind that depending on how you build it…it will add some cost. So if you get a good used one and do the work yourself, there is a fair amount of savings.

Thanks for the great information Dan! Quick question, my 07 JKU Sahara transfer is in bad health, what would you recommend as a replacement, rebuild or something else? Have Adam's driveshafts, so direct fit is a must!

So if a direct for is a must, then you would have to either rebuild what you have or buy one that is already rebuolt. You can buy the non Rubi t cases for fairly cheap uses on marketplace. You CAN switch the d300 to a jk with some adapters and a flip kit. But it increases the cost, and considering you already have driveshafts and have to then have them modified…it’s probably not far off the low end of an atlas. So I’d replace what you have at that point.
