Max Mustard is an excellent VR game for kids and a good VR game for adults who want something close to Mario VR for their Quest headset, however it never quite reaches the heights of the games it's inspired by and existing VR games like Astro Bot have managed to pull off this genre of 3rd person VR platforming with slightly more style & a greater sense of identity.
Max Mustard is a brand new VR platformer for the Quest family of devices (also launching later this year for PSVR2 & PC VR) that aims to give players that VR Mario experience so many have been searching for! We currently have some amazing 3rd person VR platformers, games like Moss, Lucky's Tale, Astro Bot & Trover spring to mind, but Max Mustard is here to bring it's own spin on this genre with third and first person blended mechanics, a vibrant world spanning 40 unique levels, collectible creatures hidden in each level and 4 over the top boss fights, it might just be the closest thing to a VR Mario game that we currently have on the Quest... but how does it stack up against the greats of platform gaming. Well so far my Max Mustard first impressions / Max Mustard review is mostly positive, the game looks charming, controls nicely, performs solidly and does enough interesting things in each level to keep me entertained. However, adults looking for a more challenging VR platformer might find Max Mustard to be a little on the easy side and the music, at least for me, lacks a sense of identity that usually goes hand in hand with these kinds of games (I bet you can easily think of a handful of iconic platformer tunes right now!)
All Max Mustard VR gameplay / Max Mustard Quest 3 gameplay was captured natively on the Quest 3 from the most recent pre-release build of the game. Max Mustard launches on the 21st of March 2024.

Great to see you enjoying the gameplay! Our lead level designer, Rob examined your video and was like "this guys pro!". It was challenging tuning the difficulty as many testers think it's way too hard! We've made some notes on your constructive critique. Thank you.

I haven't found it to be easy lol, I am near 70 and am already having trouble on the thrid section of the first world and my young Grand children are also not flying through it and are also finding it more than challenging enough, sure maybe people that just sit and play all day every day and don't have a life other than gaming, may find it easy and good for them, I wouldn't want to be one of them and so don't make it more difficult or add a difficulty option for expert gamers ? I and my family are more than happy with the difficulty as it gives us something to brag about to each other as we progress :)

@@saturatedjuicestice4061 I have been playing games since before your parents were born and am very happy to not have gotten to the level that any new game that comes out, I can master in a few hours, I want a $100 game to last for weeks and months or years, like Asheron's Call did for my friends and I. Imagine being proud of being good at playing a game where you can sit on your ass all day and still be able to eat and drink, you must be so proud to master a skill like that, do your family members sit around cheering you on ? Games are to fill in at most an hour or two, unless it's raining and you are alone at home, how do you play a game if you have friends ? Friends or people you think are friends that play the same game as you, wouldn't know you from a bar of soap if you passed them on the street if you ever got out of the House.

You could just have a harder mode for people who want that, either as a choice at the start or maybe something that unlocks after they've completed the game on the regular difficulty. Question: Are there are any graphical/visual differences between the standalone Quest 3 and Steam/PC VR versions, and if so what are they? Just trying to decide which version to get here.

@@inceptionalPSVR2 and PC will have upgraded lighting, shaders, post processing, improved haptics. Few bonus things if we have time. Expect the PSVR2 and PC version out mid year.

This game is too charming. The animation is insane! Max is really cute also. I hope the game gets harder on later levels and I suspect it will.

Lucky Tales is one of my most favorite games in VR. Platformers is one of my favorite type's of games of all time. Cant wait to get my hands on this.

I've been gaming since the NES, this feels the most like a Mario game than any I've played in a long time. Most notably it's a great spiritual successor to Mario Sunshine

We debated for a while whether we should add the shop or not. So glad we did! Can't wait for speed runners to enjoy the meta game of deciding which coins to skip and which shop items to buy.

This one I'm definitely interested in trying. Based on what you're saying, it sounds like what the music needs is just more catchy and hummable melodies. The best and most iconic game music is absolutely immediately rememberable and hummable imo, especially platformer stuff. Not bothered about the easier difficulty at all. As these days I just like to enjoy the experience of going through [good] games rather than worry about dying constantly or whatever. So, yeah, this is sounding like it will be worth getting to me. :)

This looks amazing! I tried VEN VR wich has kind of a similar wibe but it kinda got stale because of the lack of variety. This looks 10X of that game. Moss is great aswell of course but thats very heavy on puzzles so its great to see a pure platformer, but made for VR and for a younger audience 😁

Level design, the jet boots, play style etc look very like Astrobot. Nice graphics, animation and draw distance. Shows that Mario could be done on the Quest easy as it’s all about the art style. Shame the difficulty seems so easy though.

It ramps up fairly good, it's not as crazy as some of the late stage Mario Odyssey stuff is where you're super jumping between tiny squares in the sky and stuff but fairly close to that towards the end of the game

100% agree with these first impressions. I have played about the same amount at this point, and my impression is that the character design is great, the level design is good and is overall a much needed platformer in VR at this time with no word on any sequel to Astro Bot or any other VR platformers on the horizon. Areas they could improve on is the music, like you said, and story. Regarding music, it has this overall ultra relaxed feel to it which honestly decreases the excitement a bit too much. I also agree with your comment on the lacking identity. With such strong character design and beautiful levels, it’s a bit unfortunate. Regarding story - while it is a platformer and I know I should not expect too much in the story department- I feel it is missing something. Like who is Max Mustard? Why is Max in this quest? Why am I getting letters? I honestly thought Max was male before you referring to Max as “she” - so I don’t know which is correct. Adding just a bit more background near the beginning of the game would help to get me more into the game. So, in summary, while the game looks great - it is missing some critical music and story elements which would enhance my emotional enjoyment of it more. Also, yes it seems a tad bit too easy for an experienced adult player, however it might be just right for someone first experiencing a VR platformer. I would probably suggest a young new player to try this first before suggesting Astro Bot - purely from the difficulty perspective. However I am only a quarter of the way in, so perhaps I’ll change my mind if it progressively get’s more challenging. Overall though it is a good platformer and I am amazed that this quality can come from a team without the massive backing of Sony. Also I believe that platformers in general are well suited to VR. Headsets are still not light enough so sitting and enjoying a platformer can be a much more comfortable experience.

I’m so excited for this game. It’s 100% a Lucky’s Tale clone looking at the gameplay, but I adore that game. Can’t wait for this to be on my headset.

Is it possible the difficulty ramps up much in the last 3/4 of the game? Has it got the 3 or 4 collectible items per level like Mario or Donkey Kong for an extra layer of difficulty/replayability? I hope at least one of these is the case - I love 3D platformers in VR and was looking forward to this, but I'll probably pass if it really is too easy.

Hi! It does ramp up. We tried to tune it to be similar difficulty to mario games. Some say it's too easy, some say it's too hard. Hoping to add some super hard levels in the future!

Watching this my main gripe is the amount of coins, way too many, I love to 100% things and getting all the coins just looks boring. I loved Lucky's tale and was looking forward to this but I'm just missing the point of this one.

The coins slow down a bit after the first few levels. Players become desperate for them since you need them to buy ability upgrades.

I always turn off the Music as I can listen to a radio or MP3 library if I want music ? Personally I find music in a game annoying.

Especially now that you can fire up the browser with Spotify or RU-vid or Pandora or whatever and just keep the music rocking in the background regardless of whenever immersive game you’re in.

We had to google what DEI meant. We'll assume you're talking about the hero being female? Every decision in this game is about gameplay. Gameplay felt better with a character with long hair. So it stuck.
