One of my best friends (b. 1955) grew up in Windsor Terrace and has great stories about kids running and playing in the streets because it was so guiet. You need to stop in Farrell's for a beer - enter through the side door as locals do.
I only knew Windsor Terrace because when I lived on St. Mark's Place in Park Slope, I used to walk to Greenwood Cemetery to walk, I love walking through cemeteries. Now I get to walk through Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester (one of the oldest Victorian cemeteries in the US). Burial sites of Susan B Anthony and Frederick Douglas.
I loved this video and I loved your guest. I really liked the tour of the Sean Casey Animal Rescue. I have followed them for years after seeing a story about a dog they saved from near death. I think the dogs name is Patrick. I am an animal rescuer so that was greatly appreciated. I am a vegetarian so I also like how you show case all kinds of food. Your videos are amazing.
I lived here around 2012, about two blocks from Brancaccio's! The sandwiches are so good! I love Thai Tony's on that block, with some of the best thai iced coffee I've ever had.
Used to hang out ar Farrell's bar once on a while. Oldest taps in Brooklyn. Was men only until Shirley Mc Clain raised hell. Serves beer in large to go cups upon request. Real unique and a strange mix of customers.
My uncle took me and my cousins there. We made a pit stop on our way home from visiting family. It was so cool. Always think about it when I drive in that neighborhood. Brooklyn has so much to offer.
Can‘t wait to come to NYC again and check out Brooklyn properly, so many great neighbourhoods to see. And you should get a cat soon, an animal makes a new apartment much more like a home.
The Prospect Expressway had a controversial history; lots of the neighborhood was displaced to make room; many residents still think it was unnecessary. You had some good opening shots of Farrells but didn't go in; they have been serving beer in Styrofoam for decades. Before Central and Prospect Parks were built there was Greenwood cemetery bordering Windsor terrace's south side - that was the original place to picnic in summers. Cannot believe you didn't stop into Terrace bagels.
Prospect Park was the best park in NYC by Olmsted because it was the park where he got to design exactly what he wanted, a place that let you escape from the city and enjoy nature. No programs or architecture icons was needed in it, it's just a place to go and do whatever you want to do in nature. As for the freeway, you can thank Robert Moses for that monstrosity that cuts through the neighborhood because Moses hated people and he hated the city. His ultimate plan was to cut all of NYC up, including Manhattan, with freeways.
Welcome to park slope! I know you have your favorite taco spots in queens but you should try el tenampa it's a deli store but in the back is a restaurant 706 4th ave between 21 and 22 street go check it out!
This neighborhood is Brooklyn’s best kept secret. Recently moved from here to Park Slope and we still walk over to this neighborhood frequently. If I can ever buy in NYC Windsor Terrace is where we are going back to. Town feel in the best borough, how could it get any better?!
That's what I love about NYC. We were stationed in Brooklyn right by the bridge and all the eateries knew us and welcomed us and that wasn't even in a small community part of Brooklyn. Liked it so much I moved from Colorado to Queens and definitely have the small community feel yet big city presence. I love it here.
Very late to this but i really enjoyed this, the mix of places and the winters feel with clouds hanging in the background made it very atmospheric. Great stuff
I grew up 1960-1969 on East 2nd St and Vanderbilt St. one block from McDonald Ave. bordering the Greenwood Cemetery. Your video basically showed only one "side of the bridge" of Windsor Terrace and the best residential place too!
What a cool neighborhood! I'm not really a city loving person that this seems like it wouldn't be a bad place to be. I'm stuck in a really crappy city on the West Coast so this place looks great to me.
@@goodi2shooz yeah from what I hear most western cities were designed around cars and single-family homes. Older cities like New York and most in other parts of the world still have that magic cause of how they were designed and the history that's still apparent in them. I hope you find what you're looking for. Plenty of smaller cities here on the northeast that are much more affordable than Brooklyn and still have that charm and neighborhood feel.
Before gentrification the Montreal neighbourhood Verdun was where things that could have a 2nd life were usually left at laundromats & corner stores. Still, today for books and usually kitchen items stretch of Park Avenue.
Windsor Terrace is a nice quaint little spot. Great in the summer time right next to the park and movie theater. Subway is right there...... The aged steak dumplings at East Wind are the bomb, the coffee at that Connecticut Muffin is really good.
I live very close to that Sandwich shop and have never tried it. But I am going to visit today for sure. Since before moving to the city from India over a year back, I have been watching Here Be Barr. I knew no one in the city and everything I learnt about the city was from Jon's videos, from how to use a subway to the Punjabi Deli in Manhattan. Thanks a ton man!
This is my first time watching this video. I’m marking this as one of my favorites. As many times as I been to NYC (my second home) I to never heard of this area. I just left there in June, hopefully I will be back before Christmas and when I return this area will definitely be one of my stops. I’m definitely going to the Italian shop
In my neighborhood in Providence Rhode Island, I’ll put things outside on the sidewalk all the time for people to take if I’m not going to use them anymore it’s a great way to get rid of things but also recycle. I really like this video, Michael seems like such a nice guy I really enjoyed him and of course I love your videos too LOL
Can't believe the guy still remember him as his first customer! By the way Jon, i've been watching your videos when your subs was under 100k and now it's going up to 180k. Wow that's really cool! Keep it up. You have a passion for this 🤘
Yay! Yes to adopting a cat. They bring so much joy to a home. Ive always got cats from family members who had kittens needing homes, but adopted my first senior cat last year. Best decision of 2019. So fun to see how much shes changed after spending 6 years in a cat rescue.
My brother in law/sister in law and their family live right in that neighborhood! (Vanderbilt Street, about a block from the cemetery)...A couple of new places to try the next time we visit home! Thanks, Jon!
Those dumplings look delicious and made me hungry. Question, when you tour with Cash or other You tuber's, do you test before for covid because your both not wearing masks and are close?
i dont know where you lived in lower manhattan but in the east village we have this leaving out things for neighbors or needy for decades already, from clothes to books to even still working air conditioners and all kinds of appliances. so yes, it has been going on since the 1970s when i moved into the Hood. you misspoke on that one, it doesnt happen in Brooklyn only. otherwise enjoy your shows. happy new year, R.
I LOVE this type of video! Love seeing the lesser-known, off the beaten path type neighborhoods and all of the cool spots they have to offer. That sandwich you had looks legit delicious! And the dumplings, too! Sigh...two MORE spots to add to the list, LOL! Happy New Year to you and Adriana and Ben and Michael!
The neighbourhood sounded familiar but only once heard Greenwood cemetery and Prospect Park I could remember... Pretty cool to see smaller less known areas! As for giant dumplings I think manti be a good challenger - some get pretty big. Reference is n case not heard of these en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manti_(food)
You couldn’t find someone who is actually from the neighborhood and not a transplant to give you a tour? You guys didn’t talk about Farrell’s when you were right across the street from it at the dumpling shop? You basically just highlighted everything a real estate agent would which is why this neighborhood has lost its real Brooklyn feel. Just a place for hipsters to settle down and drive up the cost of living now then leave when they get tired of it.
Small businesses run by locals are the entire focus of this video. I wonder what Joe Brancaccio's grandparents, who lived in WT, would think about your characterization of Joe's shop as "hipster" and lacking in Brooklyn feel? Or what Sean Casey, who was raised in the neighborhood, would think about your lack of satisfaction with his authenticity?
Great video, Jon. I will need 1 month next time I visit NYC, as I want to go to every place you show us...lol. Just a suggestion regarding adopting a cat: please, adopt 2 at the same time, and if they are siblings, more than better!! They can play together and will not destroy your furniture (but provide them with enough scratchers and toys all over the place, thou). They won´t be alone when you are away, please believe me, I am a cat person myself and know what I am talking about.
@@nancyparker8623 Well, for the record I'm the cat man(you can ask @Here Be Barr), but it's one thing to own the home with the basement, where you can keep the cats with litter boxes save, another to live in Brooklyn apartment on the second floor, with cats & litter boxes?
Just watched this and I am going to make a day of visiting this nice neighbourhood! Excited to try these vegan options as I’m trying to find vegan gems in Brooklyn. Thanks for sharing. :)
@@michael_harren I just moved to Brooklyn but if you’re willing to share places that would be amazing! Thanks for replying and I’m actually going to Windsor Terrace this week to check out the spots in this video.
@@rachael2916 there's a Vegans of New York (VoNY) facebook group that you should totally join for stuff like this. My all time favorite place in NYC is Modern Love - it's great! Also, Screamers for pizza, Champs for diner food, Dun-Well Donuts is outstanding. V-Spot in Park Slope is amazing as well.
@@michael_harren MoLo has already gotten a ton of my money from Seamless! I also tried VSpot yesterday, such good dang tacos!! I’m going to have to give Screamers a go! Thank you for all of this and I deleted my Facebook a while ago so I can’t join that group but appreciate this info!
I disagree thatProspect park is not "appreciated" or whatever. there are entrances to the park on 4 sides and it is not a small park! That gives access to 4 distinct neighborhoods on the perimeter. The Park is well used by Brooklynite and especially if you grew up here people have many stories about family outings, teenage adventures , getting married in the park and attending first rate concerts in the summer and hearing the Philharmonic perform complete with fireworks. You should do a whole video (or more ) on the park. Put a little effort to connect with some people , like you did here on this video to get history, experience and understanding about what a gem this oasis is to Brooklynites.
