365 days I crewed on sailboats from San Diego, USA all the way down to Panama, stopping in Mexico and Costa Rica. After Panama crossing the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand stopping at islands like the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, Tonga and Fiji
45 days I traveled through New Zealand from the Northernmost point to the Southernmost point, then
100 days I traveled by motorbike through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, then
365 days I traveled in my self-built campervan from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, then
365 days I traveled with this van through Iran and Pakistan, then
180 days I built an off-grid log cabin in the woods in Spain, then
180 days I restored an old sailboat in Guatemala, then
365 days I traveled with this sailboat from Guatemala to Honduras, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Grenada and more islands in the East Caribbean

There was a time when I would have agreed with you about botanical gardens being a botched man made effort, Huub. However, gardening in a beautiful natural space as I am fortunate to do has taught me to listen to nature and let it guide my efforts. It changes the balance to stunning like the one you just shared with us. Thank you.

I don't know if anybody mentioned it but that strange tree is called a Strangler Fig, and I was given a talk on it in on holiday from the UK in Brisbane, Aus., and enjoying a tour of the rain forest there. It is a scarily patient parasitic plant that drops a seed via a bird in a high-up 'crutch' of branches, then over the next two centuries and more it slowly sends long, tendril roots to the ground. As they grow, swell and become heavier they start to knit themselves around the trunk of the 'host', and then gradually swamp the poor victim, eventually excluding light and killing it. But by now the Strangler is a strong, sturdy column, albeit with a hollow centre where the now long-gone host was before it died and rotted away. Those mountainous ground roots, like dinosaurs' arched backs, lend it a rather sinister aura, quite deservedly so if you happen to be an innocent tree stood contentedly in a rain forest minding your own business.

The ferrys is most likely from Norway. When we were in the Caribbean this winter we found the ferry that was on my island in Norway 20-30 years ago. 😅

Robert I believe it is a Strangler Fig, which I've written about in these comments. Amazing plant, probably 2 to 3 centuries old.

My friends! there is an app called picture this. if you see a plant and take a picture it will identify it. that would be helpful for us not in the tropics.

I think we can safely assume that NO-ONE speaks Icelandic except Icelanders. It's also one of the oldest, if not the oldest, Germanic language around, if I am not mistaken. In other words, it's an almost impossible language to learn! Every Icelander I ever met (not many, I admit) seemed to be multilingual the way the Dutch are. In the meantime, I live in Townsville, North Queensland (Australia), and I am surprised how very similar the vegetation on Saint Vincent is compared to what you see here in the Australian tropics, including those big trees with the giant root systems.

Buttress roots on those trees indicates soil is quite poor so tree does not use taproots for support. All the goodness is in the surface layers.

It is not Gre nah dah, its Gree nay dah. Also Toh bay go and not Toh bag go. In Barbados do not eat the machineedle fruit, it is a tree that has a yellowish, green apple that grows mainly on the beach ,never eat it. It is poisonous and blisters your mouth. Also never eat the fruit from Jamaica called Ackee, the fruit will poison you. However ,Jamaicans let it open and some buds fall off that they cook.
