Did you rule out SiC (moissanite)? Silicon carbide has a density of 3.21g/cm3, so even closer to your reading and a thermal conductivity slightly lower than diamond, but higher than copper, and it's hardness is 9.5, which would also have scratched the ruby..
@MsHojat
@MsHojat 6 лет назад
C Lau, as far as I know Silicon carbide is very rare outside of synthetic production, and pieces like that might not even exist, let alone sell for 120$. I could be mistaken though. It might just be solid crystals of SiC that are rare (just like larger diamond crystals)
@clau2272
@clau2272 6 лет назад
Mshojat. Natural Moissanite crystal is very rare, but non-gem SiC is used extensively as an industrial abrasive, and also in steel making where a lot of it is recovered as slag: this could just be a raw chunk.. Diamond is pure carbon and quite conductive as is; SiC is a semiconductor and usually covered with oxide, so would be only slightly conductive or non-conductive, so this could be an easy test..
@TooHarshForYou
@TooHarshForYou 6 лет назад
C Lau maybe well I was thinking that too when I saw him do the conductivity and scratch tests didn't knew about the density though thanks for the info

the problem with waterjet is that the thing is a poly crystal, so it possible it was torn apart because connections between crystalls weren't good enough. Still interesting result. beyond press had a diamond for pressing, would be interesting to see if such a crystall can be defeated and put on wall of shame.

Cody, would you do a video on Carbon Monoxide? Perhaps demonstrate ways in which it can be formed and how to detect it. People still die from it every year. It would be cool to warn people of it's dangers. Especially since it's a colourless and odourless gas. Maybe you could take it in another direction and do something interesting with it :)
@patrichausammann
@patrichausammann 6 лет назад
Not a bad idea. But you could also buy a carbon monoxid detector on a PCB and get a suitable Micro Controller too🙄. This things are no more as expensive, as they were some years ago 🤗. But the carbon dioxyd detectores are much more expensive. I have some gas sensors working with a MCR, to get nealy all necessary informations about the air quality. If I am not totally wrong, the carbon dioxid sensors seem to work with some UV-LEDs and some kind of a color or light sensor. I think, I had a look at the scematics and the manual and remember from them. 🐵 🙊 🙉

That ruby looked like candy. At 9 on the Moh's scale, it would be hard candy in the finest sense.
@MGSLurmey
@MGSLurmey 6 лет назад
Remember that the Moh's scale rates a mineral's *hardness,* not *toughness.* Hardness is how resistant a material is to abrasion. Toughness is how resistant a material is to fracturing under stress. Diamond, for example, is very hard but not very tough. It is fairly brittle when compared to something like steel, but steel is not as hard as diamond. That corundum may be incredibly brittle, similar to rock candy, but also very hard, able to scratch steel.

I would have stopped after the scratch test. Also Cody, you should purchase a synthetic color change sapphire/corundum. I own a half boule of the stuff and this stuff is pretty amazing. It is a cheap alternative to buying alexandrite. In white light the gem will appear blue, and in yellow it will appear deep dark purplish pink. Also I own a green LASER pointer and out of curiosity I tried shining the beam through the gem. The beam turns bright red, as does the entire stone. Very interesting science behind it too. Thanks for the great videos, Cody.

I don't get the water displacement trick. Isn't it the same amount of water?
@tehwubbles
@tehwubbles 6 лет назад
yeah, but you're not finding the volume of the object, and you're not removing any water to find a difference in mass of water. Frankly I don't understand it either. Seems like the wire's normal force should be counteracting the stone's weight completely
@marcaxe
@marcaxe 6 лет назад
The stone will have some buoyancy when submerged, so the wire will only be supporting the weight of the stone minus the buoyant force, the buoyant force (being equal to the weight of water displaced) will have an equal and opposite reaction as measured by the scales.
@tehwubbles
@tehwubbles 6 лет назад
Ah, so the water is pushing down against the stone, which can't move. Makes sense. Thanks
@lelcat8414
@lelcat8414 6 лет назад
No, the water is pushing up against the stone, which means the water is pushing down against the scales with the same force (plus the total weight of the water). The wire provides just enough support to the stone to allow it to remain suspended in the water - equivalent to an object with equal density to the water being dropped in unsupported. If the wire pull up with more force, the stone "floats" up, less and the stone sinks. So the weight on the scales represents the mass the stone would have if the stone were the density of idle fish.

Hey Cody. Wikipedia says, that natural diamond has more than 5 times the thermal conductivity of copper - 2200 W/(K*m) vs ~401 W/(K*m) for copper. Monocrystalline isotopically pure diamond (99,9% C12) has thermal conductivity of 3320 W/(K*m). As far as I'm concerned, the latter value is higher than graphene, and highest known for a solid material at room temperature.

If it was 3?52 wouldn't it be a good buy..... like deal of the century....... It's polluted like crazy just on visual.......

once you calculate all uncertainties for the density of your diamond you'll probably find that 3.51 will fall within your range of uncertainty

What a great collab/crossover - both channels gain potential new audiences and both of them are kinda on the same side of the geeky/awesome spectrum. Always great to see such collabs!

I don't mind the collab but would prefer not to have to visit the other channel to see the result. Oh well, guess it'll just remain a mystery.

If it is a diamond it is not valuable. Why would you just buy a 120$ stone to play with...

From Wiki... Naturally occurring diamonds have a density ranging from 3.15 to 3.53 g/cm3, with pure diamond close to 3.52 g/cm3.

did that ruby come out of a laser? That looks like it use to be a pretty large cylinder.

That looks like a polycrystalline diamond... Meaning it's not a "diamond" but compressed diamond dust, with more impurities than a piece of mischmetal.

Is it me or Cody kinda diluted.. I enjoyed watching heavy water, making gunpowder, rockets and other stuff. Lately I'm not interested in videos from Cody..

I'm surprised that an industrial grade diamond, unsuitable as a gemstone, would be so expensive ($120.00 on eBay). Is that legit?

Diamond should burn. I don't think any of the oxides (silicon, aluminium, zirconium, chromium) will burn.
