What did you think of Ragnar Yacht? Do you like the working man's yacht or do you prefer the shiny paintwork?

Would love an Explorer yacht - no need for a chase boat filled with the toys, so many more stylish yachts only have a 'Touch n Go' pad as well! Been following this on David Seal's channel. Maybe the owner wants a stronger hull for thicker ice? Some of the rivers in Russia get ice over 1 metre thick! Do you think if she were to crash into a breakwater or harbour wall she would become........ Ragnarok?

@darthkek1953
@darthkek1953 3 года назад
Reconditioning is so expensive on the entire range of boating, from small dayboat to this scale, it's almost never worthwhile unless you have your own shop, experience, and are basically doing the hours for free.
@skiingfast1
@skiingfast1 3 года назад
I agree. I saw David Seal interview a ship maker and this question was posed to the shipbuilder. It saves a very small percent by reusing the material, almost insignificant. It saves a little time a few months out of a few years. I think the key here is they wanted this ice rating. So they got a used but specialized hull and it took as long as getting a new yacht with a standard hull. Also of note the for sale price is very comparable and smaller compared to similar but sized yachts. Possibly because it doesn't have an extra 3M in fairing on the hull. Or because the owner wants to sell it sooner than later.

Love Ragnar, if I were able to either buy or build I would have gone the same route as this owner did. Ragnar is truly an Icon in the yachting industry. (:
@nanoflower1
@nanoflower1 3 года назад
For me it would depend upon how much space I felt I needed. By using an existing vessel your maximum space is constrained. So if you need something bigger you could chop up the end and extend it or just have someone build you a vessel that's big enough for your needs. I would tend to go for the latter option if I needed that much extra space. That said Ragnar looks more than large enough for most people's needs.

Perhaps some day you could do a video where you tour such an explorer with the chief engineeer to let him point out all the technical features and some of the nitty gritty details that went into designing and specifying the myriad technical systems on such a masterpiece of a ship. That would make an extremely interesting video for the more technically inclined!

Without a doubt both Icon and RWD have transformed what was once a working support vessel into the remarkable 68 meter explorer yacht "Ragnar" both from the outside, all the way thru to the inside, complete with a gentleman’s lounge with a fireplace? It seems it's now owned by Gretel Packer (sister of James), won an award of some kind in 2015 for a super yacht most used by it's owner in the year (it went all over the place, as you would with a 17,000 Nautical mile range) and interestingly it's not available for charter, according to one site. It is very awesome, however. It still looks tug-ish, but is not. To my mind, it's the coolest of the super yachts. Esysman, you should do a video on Arctic P.

It's up here in Norway now, and being held by authorities, in the port of Narvik. The man who built it is one of Putin's men and he put it up for sale so he can sell it to a company concern that doesn't have his name on it, which is what he did. It seems to still be serving Russia's interest. They consider it still owned by former KGB officer Vladimir Strzhalkovsky. It wasn't a coincidence that it showed up off the shore of Norway's largest naval port in the north and went to harbour in Narvik where NATO will be holding exercises 'Cold Response 2022'. Russia was formally invited to observe the exercise, but declined. Perhaps to observe more clandestinely. Norwegian officials aren't sure if they are going to let the ship leave Narvik port while the exercise is going on.

By far your best video ever! I love the education, the beauty of the boat, and even the speculation why the owner is selling! He is selling probably because of money. Three possibilities: 1. If he's broke, he needs to cut debts and raise cash. 2. If his financial position has increased drastically, then maybe he wants a bigger and better boat. 3. My best guess is, the owner expected Ragnar to be in very high demand for Antarctic charters and it's just not. Not enough to pay a significant portion of the bills, at least. So, he took a gamble on a business that did not pan out, and now he's recouping his loss by selling off the boat. I would also bet the conversion was far, far more expensive than he expected, which crippled the charter biz right from the start. Next time, go straight to Damen and get the boat built custom for less.

I would only change the exterior color at a first glance. Would love to see the interior and technical side of the retrofit. It is an overland vehicle for the water, love it.

As always. Good work. I agree with the comment that says he would rather have a super yacht as i do. Money i not an issue so one can charter. As a full time vessel, not my cupa.
