Edwin B. Forsyth National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey is an expansive natural area consisting of miles of coastline, salt marsh, and forest. We got to explore the refuge in mid April to see what bird species we could find there. Take a look and see for yourself why Edwin B. Forsyth National Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place for birding!

If you return to NJ you might want to travel to the north end of Brigantine Island. There is a large bird sanctuary on that end of the island, which rarely has any visitors at all. You'll be able to see a huge variety of birds, and it's also a heavenly place to visit.

Wow what a great coincidence, I’m visiting New Jersey at the end of this month. I went last year and went to that exact same Wildlife Refuge so cool! Also as an avid birder and bird nerd, it’d be interested in seeing your checklists on these trips you post.

If you guys are ever back in the state, I recommend checking out Cattus Island County Park. I usually see Saltmarsh Sparrows every time I go in spring/summer!

Really enjoy your videos. Yes, in NJ the Brigantine Division of Forsythe NWR is a prime birding site. (Not so much in summer, only because the nasty biting Greenhead Flies will not cease their attack.) We birders call it "Brig". Living in southern coastal NJ, I visit there a lot, & I've gotten many of my Life Birds there. Also, I've been fortunate enough to see some of the NJ rarities that occasionally show up there, such as Garganey & Roseate Spoonbill. I agree with someone who mentioned Cattus Island County Park, a gem of a coastal park located on a bay in Toms River, NJ. Varied habitat, including two areas of expansive salt marsh, where you'd be more likely to find the sparrow you seek.

We were told they’re very tide dependent. That if the water is up high they’re easier to find by the road but otherwise they’re really rough to locate.

@BadgerlandBirding They're tough to find there. Next time, you have to try heading to the end of Gull Pond Rd. That means going straight instead of taking the right turn that takes you onto Wildlife Dr. (8 mile loop). EBF is also good for rarities. I've seen American White Pelicans, a Ruff, a Roseate Spoonbill, a Black-throated Gray, a Sage Thrasher and some others. I hope you guys get to come back at some point.

You have to go to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island in Newbury, Massachusetts!! Excellent view of numerous saltmarsh sparrows (and sometimes even seaside sparrows!) right along the road at close range in the summer...mostly between lots 1, 2, and 3 along the refuge road. Tons of great trails, overlooks, and beaches in the refuge as well. Hellcat boardwalk trail is excellent for warblers during migration, as is walking along the refuge road. You two will want at least 2 days there (I try to go at least a few times per month year round), as there are so many different habitats to see. Plus, there are many other birding hotspots in the area depending on what season you come. Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, MA is great for winter/ocean birding, for example.
@BadgerlandBirding
@BadgerlandBirding 26 дней назад
That does sound like a place we need to go! All in on saltmarsh sparrows!
@hollymate-luber3566
@hollymate-luber3566 26 дней назад
@@BadgerlandBirding yes absolutely! Let me know if you need any help planning the trip :) There are even more birding hotspots not too far from North Shore, MA including Great Meadows NWR in Concord MA, Great Bay NWR in NH, and Cape Cod National Seashore (in particular, Beech Forest and Race Point in Provincetown and Wellfleet Bay Audubon sanctuary in Wellfleet) if you’re up for a little drive! You could spend at least a whole week in the area, or make multiple shorter trips to try out different seasons. Cape Cod also has some salt marsh sparrows in the summer, and that’s also a great time to see shearwaters and jaegers from the shore (or by whale watch boat!) from Provincetown. Anyway there’s my little advertisement for MA birding, hope you make the trip!!
