Just got my my pair today to replace a broken ATH M40x. Right away I can tell you the K361 sounds very natural and crystal clear. Moreso than the M40x. The bass isn't as present in the 361 (still good) but the stereo separation is perceptibly better. They isolate better than the M40x with slightly better clamping force on the earpads. Tones are clearly separated with the 361 and I would definitely trust it for mixing. Despite being 32ohms to the 40x's 35, the 361 seem to need more sound to drive it. If you're used to the M40x, these are a good upgrade.
I didn't know the dragonfly thing was a thing. I'm learning. However, i have been playing around with the free audio apps for my laptop like the ''Ears audio toolkit''. Makes my cheap 20 dollar sony's sound like 30 dollar sony's.
Still rockin my AKG K141s from '85....These have an active central driver surrounded by 6 passive radiators. Needless to say, bass is very realistic. Always impressed with their sound. Good to know AKG is still making great products.
I really like my K361 but the build is horrible. The headband snapped when I try to put them on my head after 6 months of use. I am gluing them together now. So... I am pretty pissed.
I never buy audiophile batteries. I take my Duracells to my local hifi shop, and they optimize the alkaline levels, replace the tin contacts with silver and rebuild the suspension with a beryllium core. All for only $35 each. You won't believe the SQ I get from my portable transistor radio with 6 of those suckers in it!
The K361 does NOT need an amp! Its impedance is 32 ohms with a sensitivity of 114db!! You might need a dac if the file format is not supported by your device. It has a frequency response of 15 Hz to 28,000 kHz. The K361 is tuned to the old AKG response and tuning NOT the Harman curve. I have the K371 which is a step-up in both build and sound quality. The K371 is tuned within 1db of the Harman curve. It has a much, much better frequency response of 5 Hz to 40,000 kHz. Absolutely love it.
Dave Kermode ---- I just got to the point in this video where Randy says that Mark Harmon played for USC. Being from Los Angeles, born and raised, as well as being a typical SoCal beach kid playing baseball, football, skateboarding, surfing, volleyball, dirtbikes, road bikes, karate, water and snow skiing, and more, since I was five or six years old, I also love college football. I figured I would look for a comment in this section correcting Randy, that way I wouldn't be repeating what has already been said. Randy didn't realize how he could have started insane USC/UCLA fans into a frenzy, heads exploding, screaming, crying, blaming Trump. Hahahahahaha
I bought these headphones about 2 years ago at a guitar center. Haven't used them in a while. I'll have to give them a go again soon. First impressions of them: very responsive mids and highs and a natural low end bass response. Very revealing sounding headphone. Highly recommend 👌
Why haven't you used them in a while? There must be something you didn't like. I was going to ask if these are good for listening to voice recording to prevent post processing. Thanks
Very late reply but how do these compare to say, the AKG Y50s?`The bass in those are just the right amount. Like a little subwoofer but subtle. I have my eyes on the K371s aswell.
Great Vid Randy! We're always on the lookout for affordable closed backs. From your description, these seem to be a lot like the Shure SRH440s. From the vid the build seems similar, 3.5mm stereo connector, protein leather pads, but the Shures have a thick padded headband and very little clamping force to me. The 440s seem to be a "neutral" headphone but actually skew just a tiny bit to the sweet side. Nice detail from them but they are never harsh. The soundstage is just ok to my ears from these. At last look they retail for $99, right where the AKGs are. I don't think a person would be disappointed with either one.
I've looked at these and the bluetooth version too Thanks for the review. I'm not a fan of noise canceling I think it alters the headphone and glad these aren't possibly why it sound staged good.
Ugh you keep saying the deck, the deck, the deck stop using the deck just plug into your amp put a record on put up put on vinyl on plug into your amp and let’s hear it like that stop saying deck stop using the deck get rid of the deck
These sound really great. They feel very cheap, but they are. So I guess that’s fine. Problem for me though my ears were touching the driver/inner surface and I hate that feeling. I ended up returning and getting V-Moda M-100 Master.
Hey Randy!!! Good morning to you sir. Great job you are doing please keep doing what you are doing. I have a suggestion... All of your emphasis is on the hifi home gear which is great. Any chance of reviewing budget Bluetooth headphones? (over the ear would be my preference). Almost all of your subscribers use them at home or on the go and this one investment of $25 or maybe $100 is probably the most used "hifi" instrument that most of you viewers actually use in terms of total hours.
Just bought them now, In Bluetooth version. Thank you. A few months ago, the Sony SS CS5. Almost impossible to find in Europe, amazing sound with my rega planar one and Yamaha as301. You are my fav RU-vid by far. I really appreciate your non bs approach. My coffee intake has increased a lot since I follow you btw.
Hey Randy i’ve been using the Behringer HPX 2000 headphones for a few years now and i must admit they sound great for the low cost i personally was very surprised as Behringer isn’t known to be high end Equipment in the Music Industry perhaps low cost okay quality on a few things but these Studio Headphones they hit a home run i think my last pair from AmazonPrime was under 30 dollars
I tried a pair of the monoprice retros and they are pretty damn impressive for $50 Australian off Amazon. Good for a fun, bassy set you don't need to worry about breaking.
Good Sunday morning to you sir thank you so much for an awesome headphone review oh I like it a lot maybe you can do a small review about the camera adapter for the iPhone that you’re referring to and where to get the parts and pieces and stuff please have a most blessed awesome awesome day
There is no vegan leather. You just can't prevent cows from eating bugs and flies by accident. And even if you managed to do that: Baby cows probably don't like oat milk. Jokes aside: I just ordered those, along with DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms, Sennheiser HD 280, AKG, K-182 and some cheaper Superlux and t.bone cans to compare them. My main headphones and reference are the DT 880 Edition. I don't expect a closed-back to really compete with them, but I hope to find a pair that comes close in overall balance. They should arrive tomorrow, I'm really curious!
@@Kuolitee The K-182 was really disappointing. Really dull, wonky sound. The K-361 was very nice, I can understand why people like it. But it felt a bit cheap, and in comparison to the Beyerdynamic, I missed a bit of authority in its sound. The DT 770 Pro had more slam in the bass and more sparkle in the treble without sounding too hot or too V-shaped. It sounds more wide and open as well, pretty close to my DT 880 Edition. For me, it even sounded better than the DT 700 Pro X and the DT 770 Pro X LE. One thing that the K-361 did better for me than the DT 770 Pro is the timbre of the mids, which seemed to be a bit more consistent across different genres. Also, the K-361 is easier to drive and gets louder on weak outputs. Both are great, you should test them both to see which one fits your ears best. I kept the DT 770 Pro, and I'm really happy with it!
When I plug them right into my phone, do they work just fine or do I have to have an external DAC/AMP for them to sound good? I'm new here, so I could use a bit of help from the community. I usually listen to music from the phone using Spotify with the "very high" audio quality. Thx!
I’d you like the way they sound then you’re all good. I’ve always noticed an appreciable difference when using an external DAC. Most headphones don’t have dacs optimized for music. If you have the iPhone the lightening to 3.5mm adapter is actually a pretty good DAC for $10
I bought a $200 Schitt stack with my Sundaras, and its a night a day difference compared to directly into my android. My fiance used the dac/dongle INCLUDED with her I phone to run the sundaras, not as good... but I definitely questioned my purchase. The boost you get from the apple dac/dangle compared to a straight 3.5mm for $10 is the easiest recommendation in audio. Update - went back to the dongle because of this post after almost a year with the schiit stack. Its boring, drowned out, no separation. Really not even in the same league, as expected. However, i do remember being blown away from 3.5mm to a dongle which is only $10. There may be plenty of middle ground between the two i know nothing about.
@@cheapaudioman thx for the answer. I use an android phone with an USB c dangle thingy for wired headphones. Is there a good budget solution for that situation? I basically just want a cheap setup with a good listening experience.
@@metalbased9267 it should sound fine with what you are doing now. these are 32 ohm so the phone can power them plenty loud but the sound quality while ok won't be "audiophile."
#cheapaudioman If you want bass, and I mean deep, deep bass you need to listen to “Why So Serious?” from The Dark Knight movie soundtrack - 3:26 mins to 5:22 mins. DEEP BASS.
question to all my fellow music lovers ...anyone have a recommendation for a decent pair of over-the-ear "BLUETOOTH" & wireless closed back headphones that come in under or around 200 bucks? ...i currently have a pair of jbl's from crutchfield that are on-ear & have noise canceling that i got for a bargin price of 50 bucks that i use out in my garage workin on my project car & for out mowing the lawn, & to give a base-line for where my taste is at, these jbl's sound good to my ear... so what id really like is a good (decent?) & affordable ($100-$200?) pair of over-ears that i could use for listening to my tunes around the house? ...btw, im not an audiophile or a brand snob, just a very passionate music lover... & a music lover with a "reasonable" (ie, im married) budget ...thank u
If the magic in these headphones can make former UCLA quarterback Mark Harmon a USC alum, I'd have trouble trusting their ability to faithfully reproduce music as the artist intended. As for your channel, I like it very much. I LikE iT verY MuCh INdeeD! (I'm sorry, I'm just getting into equalization...)
Would have like to know along with listening from your little dac , how a cd through an amp (or receiver) sounded in comparison to DAC. Nice explanations though , just needing a closed-back set occasionally and looking at reviews :- )
What a difference a couple of months make, eh? I went on somewhat of a budget binge and picked up the HE R7DX at 79 dollars along with these AKGs and the Blon B60 during an open box sale. I really like the AKGs but when I A and B compared them with the R7Dx, through an ifi Zen Dac 2, the hifimans stole my heart. Using the bass boost with the R7Dx, it filled out the somewhat lighter bass and made them absolutely slay it. My daily drivers were the Airmotiv GR1s but the Hifimans are now my go to. I bought the R7Dx on your recommendation, so thank you for that.
Mark is also the son of famed football star Tom Harmon, but has just left NCIS, to be replaced by Gary Cole. I don't think it's going to survive without him after losing so many other main characters over the years
i will buy these eventually and return here to do the link when i do. need to fix the van first ;-) (jan 2022) so i bought the bluetooth version. first impressions vs. my akg k240 wired... more bass but still very linear. more revealing treble. when i use them wired with my tube headphone amp, the noise floor is now obvious which it wasn't with the k240s. overall the 361s are linear but with a lot more bass that goes deeper and more revealing overall. the k240s still pull ahead on tone/texture and more air but in fairness they are semi-open back. the build quality is good on the 261s. i like the padding. the clamp is a little tight but i'm sue it will loosen up with time. the soft touch volume is nice. the bluetooth has great connectivity. no breakup anywhere in my apartment. sadly, it's only sbc not aptx. overall, i'm very happy with the purchase.
With all due respect to a formative musical influence…Gingivitis? Hell, you’d smell the decaying flesh at 10’… Still have a few Cash albums (my parent’s) from the 60’s. RIP
I just got these and so far I love them. There is one classical movement that I test headphones with along with various songs from various genre's but when I got to Mozart I noticed the movement I use is Serenade for Winds, K. 361 3rd movement. Weird huh?
Sweet, thx Ron…er, Randy. Have you tried ATH-40s? Curious how these compare. Are they different enough, to be different, I guess? Lol. Or similar enough to not warrant the purchase? Warmer? Cooler? Bassy, trebley, etc…you get the drift.
Don't forget they do a bluetooth version what goes for £99 they do a closed back version of £75 A better headphone is the k701 but you probably need an amp if using off mobile device? being 62 ohns frequency response is 10Hz to 40 kHz they have double vocal coils flatwire they should reproduce the base you were talking about £120. Another good similar to that model you have shown is the K 371 is a better headphone and only £101 being Titanium coated drivers 5Hz to 40 kHz drives not 10Hz-40kHz as the361, get deeper into the base with control better than the k361 and may be cheaper over there as well yeah they definitely make some good headphones and reasonably priced see if you can get the k701 or the k702
I bought the K7xx from Massdrop a few years ago, and ended up giving them away. They were waaay too large for my head and it was impossible to get any kind of seal at all. I have a very tiny head, but the K7xx's were the first headphones I've owned that were so badly made that I could not fit them on my head. So now, I'm leery of any AKG products. Love the HD6xx's and the HE4xx's, so I can't complain too much. One dud out of three.
Top form with this one! The real sith audio message was all in the eyes 😂... And the Walken I'd say the one issue I've had with the k361 is the earpads with my bigger ear... yes single...the right one... (the left one is normal, so this could bother anyone with two big ears too or ear that stick out). The earpads feel soft and comfy at the start, but with long use the flatten a bit during the session. Enough to start putting pressure on the top of my ear. I've replaced the pads with Yaxi stpad2 as they are firmer and retain Most of the sound signature (maybe a tiny bit less bass) but no more comfort problem.
I had to go check out the Korn track as I ha e heard you mention it a few times. The intro is pretty interesting. Now I have to wonder what that 20hz spot is and how it would sound on legit headphones or a legit sound system
Love AKG headphones. Still have an old original K 240 Monitor 600 Ohms model that still works well after many, many years. But the headband is finally falling apart. Might have to check these AKG K361 out! Was thinking of a Beyerdynamic D990 but the AKG K361 might do the job just fine....for a very good price too!
I second the comparison with the M50Xs. I have both, and the AKG is more comfortable ergonomically and sonically. The M50Xs make my head and my ears fatigued in relatively short order, and the K361s don't do either. They don't quite reach "can wear indefinitely without discomfort" status for me like the Meze 99s, but they're a heck of a lot closer to that than the M50Xs are.
I have DT 770 and K 371 and like both. DT 770 have more (sibilant) highs and K 371 more sub bass. DT 770 have better soundstage but overall I like more K 371. K 361 have less sub bass and crispier highs and they are less detailed than K 371.
That’s true. Got sucked in for other reasons and once in the closed garden of Apple, an audiophile is desperate to find some way to get good audio out of it. However it taught me, once I bought a Hi Rez DAP, that I cannot distinguish quality differences of 192kHz versus Apple’s 96kHz anyway.
