This week our man in China, Elliot Richards is taking a break from the usual array of small, sensible affordable EVs to show us the latest and greatest creation from Xpeng: The new G9 flagship SUV. With an outrageous interior, Mercedes-level quality and a price tag that will likely undercut its western rivals, is this the moment China becomes the new king of luxury?

XPENG has fallen behind in the new electric car race. The G9 is perfectly sniped by the Li L9 & L8, although I don't think the latter two are perfect, but people like them more. Within less than 48h after the L8 announcement,, XPENG announced that it will lower the price of g9 and increase the configuration.

I don't know why you skipped the tech. Xpeng has the best voice controls and assisted driving tech in china. You didn't even show the screens head on. Not to mention the fully automated fold out bed...that to be fair wasn't offered on your vehicle...and xpeng does high end for better margins and so Europeans will buy it. For an xpeng owner such as you are, that was a crappy review. I'm suprised and disappointed. If they will build up a service network here in Europe and start importing, I don't see a chance for any other non Chinese manufacturer. I just ordered a South Korean EV and am impressed about their quality and the amount of sales they do even here in Germany, the formerly holy grail of quality cars which don't offer as much warranty as the Asians do. That doesn't really underline trust in their own German quality, which is one of the reasons I turned towards South Korean cars, because I simply like the car to be long term reliable, modern, safe and inexpensive! It is super interesting to see how far they are and we seem to be a point now were we have to copy from China and not the other way around. But even then we will never have this cheap labor and in order to stay an economically and humanitarian healthy country, we may have to rely on peoples national ideology and pay more for a car that gives you less just in order to maintain the survival of the local/countries economy. I wonder if the average Chinese gets wealthier and more spoiled from life they might run into the same laziness and luxury problems we have in the Western World. At some point it may even out and they will have raise prices and we will all be balanced again?!

@@jzvr5842 Good point, but Singapore is to me not equal to China, though China wants to see it that way. But I totally agree on the Chinese culture and that is exactly why the western world will run into problems. We are too busy getting our work/life balance straight and too much time is being spent on bullshit images from single people, to corporations to government to maintain something irrelevant that they can profit from in any other form. I am not saying everything is bad here, I am also happy human rights don't get breached on a systematic way, but I am worried about our future and I have to spend more time on selecting what is total and utter BS and what is real and worth focusing on. Here are some examples to what I call BS: -Consuming news about people we will never be in touch with - Celebrity News -Driving uncomfortable cars optimized for high speed in countries that have a speed limit -Driving huge and wasteful pick-up trucks on a daily basis when you never/rarely need to transport bulky stuff -Dress yourself according to the lastest fashion trends - just wear what feels and looks good to you and stick with less things in long term -Don't buy stuff you don't need just to impress others -Don't try to impress others in the private world, be yourself and focus on your health and care for your few real friends and be tolerant and helpful to others. I could go on but I have stuff to do, anyway just to give you and idea about 1st world problems, which might overlap with others.

It seems to me that the rationale for personal vehicles does not really exist for most people. The monthly cost compared to distance travelled seems ridiculous. The future will most likely have efficiently sized people moving vehicles. Capacity will be 7-10 people, and the vehicles will network with each other to form small trains that could easily handle rush hour loads and then go off somewhere to charge up. There will be surplus capacity for people to have quick responses for local errand running etc. This will obviously require a reconceptualization of how we move large numbers of people in short windows of time. It's great that the 'elites' are willing to be the beta testers for technology to be used in everyday vehicles!

Zhaoqing licence plates, does it mean there is now xPeng factory somewhere there or just that somebody who lives there bought that car?

With you all the way Elliot, we need some smaller more agile EVs, not just the MG4, but something smaller with more utility, less luxury.

The S for sport in SUV doesn't mean it's sporty. Almost none of them are. It's a vehicle that provides the utility for your sports. Such as towing a jetski... that's what an SUV is supposed to be. Not itself sporty.

There's a rule on the Internet. If a video title or article headline asks a question... then the answer is "no". (Because if the answer is "yes" then the title would just state it as a fact. So the question mark means "probably not" and, thus, "no".)

jmho I've seen other videos that show better just how awesome this car really is, especially the upscale interior and incredible sound system. Plus, I believe the rear wheel drive version only costs approx. $44,000...very cheap imho compared to most other evs that don't have near as nice interiors than this has.

It doesn’t matter how good an Xpeng is, a Range Rover driver wont have one.
@emperorbruce1551
@emperorbruce1551 Год назад
perhaps not but a Jaguar F-Pace driver might prefer one over a Land Rover because it offers EV performance, great range and it passes the "labrador-in-the-back" test and just because it's not a Land Rover, Audi or BMW.

Whilst I like it I’ll still be driving a Range Rover until they make the new fully electric one too expensive for me to have no choice

@@malcolmlane-ley2044 As opposed to the non expensive gas powered Range Rover? In the US the lowest trim Range Rover starts just above 100k USD. This G9 starts at like 45k, and tops out at 65k.

I worry we will of JLR don't come up with a proper full EV before either this or the US Rivian reach our shores.

Cool car but I want China to build smaller cars. Not those cheap ones. Car for the middle class, modern, high-tech, compact for the city, and as much range as you can possibly fit.

It is luxury, because they desperately need better profit margins. You can find that in the luxury segment. Also, with their scale this is an optimal choice. You can see this with Nio. They have better profit margins. Investors are now talking about whether XPeng can survive. I hope they can, but not sure.
