BlackFly's strange-looking, yet practical design arouses the curiosity and skepticism of many at first glance. This aircraft's particular design simplicity is the key to make it affordable, robust, safe, and convenient for mass adoption. In this video, I will explore the three characteristics, that in my opinion, make Opener's Black Fly design truly innovative and potentially disruptive.
I hope you enjoy it!

The design of e-VTOL aircraft is driven by five degrees of freedom. Payload, Speed, Range, Noise, and Simplicity. These degrees of freedom are strongly interlinked and the improvement of one parameter often disadvantages one or more of the others.
The three most common categories of e-VTOL are:
Multicopter architecture:
Lift and cruise architecture:
Tilt rotor architecture:
However, one of the big downsides of a Tilt-body architecture is the varying positioning of the operator, along with the aircraft, during the different stages of the flight.
The landing gear consists of a rub-strip on the bottom of an amphibious hull and a small rubber bumper on the rear of the fuselage. The lower edge of the winglets are skids that limit the vehicle's roll when parked.
A custom vehicle cart is provided with each BlackFly. The cart allows a single individual to easily move a BlackFly over unfinished surfaces.
A custom vehicle cart is provided with each BlackFly. The cart allows a single individual to easily move a BlackFly over unfinished surfaces.
In order for BlackFly to become mass adopted, I think, Opener will have to improve the noise emission of its aircraft. The high tip speed of the blades is the main generator of noise in eVTOL aircraft. The BlackFly features a Tilt-Body architecture, this gives Opener an extra degree of freedom when designing the propellers.

Seeing those test flight videos, he was a young man when he got it flying. It sucks being an inventor sometimes. After you get it working, takes forever sometimes to get it in the market. I have a software that's like that that makes VR webpages with touch and gestures, and I'm sure it will be another ten years before I can bring it to market. Not because of the technology, because fundraising is a bitch. I wish Blackfly luck, and hope they raise the capital they deserve.

I hate that the top speed was limited to 65mph in the US. I would want it to out put 150mph safely at least. That way this vehicle can be used for interstate travel.
@meadmaker4525
@meadmaker4525 2 года назад
Leng has said in multiple interviews that the Blackfly can go significantly faster, but has limited to low speed flight to make it accessible to those without pilot licenses. If successful, I imagine he'll make an "unlimited" version that people with pilot licenses can fly. Unfortunately, with a range of only 25 miles, it's never really going to be capable of interstate travel, regardless of speed, but it's a step in the right direction.

@@meadmaker4525 it seems quite spacious, perhaps a gas engine for cruise could be incorporated into later models. The tilting body architecture seems like their greatest contribution to the vtol concept.

The Blackfly needs viewing ports on the bottom and or cameras.. so the pilot can look through the bottom of the cockpit for better environment awareness. Maybe even a helmet with augmented reality display that would make the aircraft's structure to appear invisible.

Yeah it really doesn’t seem like a safe design. Powered glider ultralights are a mature technology tired and tested in real world use for decades. Safer, cheaper, better range. Modern paramotors have a range of 290 miles, and they can land safely without power. Intermittent refueling can practically provide effectively unlimited range. This thing has a range of 24 miles (40km). If you want to make it back, 12 miles, but with a reasonable safety buffer, optimistically 12 miles. Landing and takeoff certainly will use more fuel. So if you want to land at the destination and still make it home without recharging, safely, then what, like 3 miles maybe. It’s absurd. Hyped up, backwards, less for more, get you nowhere, overpriced, pie in the sky nonsense, that plays on the fact the ultralight vehicles are uncommon so many people don’t know much about them. Wowz! Flying! The fact is that vastly superior ultralight vehicles which don’t require licensing have been commercially available and affordably priced for decades.

@multi-mason
@multi-mason 2 года назад
Remember, you can go about 10 miles if you want to make it back. That’s right right, 40km range is only 24 miles. If we take the companies promo materials at face value, then you could only go 12 miles max and have juice to make it back. It would be unwise to cut so close though, and even 10 miles would be a little risky. Now I’m sure landing and take off use more juice than cruising too, so if you want to land at your destination, well no, you probably shouldn’t do that, unless you are either planning to recharge at the destination, or your only going a couple miles. How long does it take recharge? Paramotors have ranges as far as 290 miles. Landing every hundred miles or so to refuel I much longer trips is something which is done as well. Sorry, but this flying car, like the dozens that have come before, is absolute pie-in-the-sky bs. Less for more, get you nowhere novelty, that is more a likely than not vapor ware anyway. Meanwhile inexpensive ultralights have been around for decades, and getting better year after year.

For low noise take off, we could look too catapult and maglev railcar types of solutions. The crafts would transtion from stationary directly to cruise+climbing. Any forward velocity at take off also saves battery capacity. If glide landing or parachute landing are feasible, this also reduces noise at destination.

As far as the propulsion goes, small, ducted jets like Lilium's jet would probably take the Blackfly to the next level in terms of noise, performance, safety (from exposed blades), etc. A future iteration with such and a gimbaling cockpit, may make it the go-to design for such aircraft, due to its efficiency, simplicity & cost benefits. Battery hotswap capability would take the design even further. Maybe such an iteration could also have the potential to be twin-seat, if the ducted jets and battery energy density can meet the performance demands. I would envision multi-seat (>2) as being more in the realm of cyclo-rotor territory. All-in-all, very impressive.

A gimbaled cockpit would be a great usability enhancement, though it would add weight. Maybe some partial through-the-floor visibility, or a video monitor, could add some of this benefit. I’m no aero engineer, but I also wonder if the overall cruise efficiency would be better if the props were somewhere other than in front of the wings, which would seem to interfere with lift, due to prop turbulence. Regardless, if it’s really only a fraction of the price of other eVTOLs, it looks like it could be huge.

Blackfly would be much better looking with a deployable back wheel that makes its standing gait "upright". Of course that's weight. minimizing weight by using the front/back props to torque it forward and tilt it is good, but it's just that last moment where the ground contact doesn't match the vtol approach. hrm

There is a lot to like about the aircraft. The big issue for me is the lack of a landing gear which severely limits the use of the aircraft. If you fly somewhere else than your home aerodrome, then you cannot move the aircraft out of the way because you do not have the little cart with you. So it is not a practical aircraft. There are lots of places I can visit within the range of the aircraft but none of them are options because the aircraft cannot be moved after landing. Unfortunate.
@phamnuwen9442
@phamnuwen9442 2 года назад
Adding a couple of wheels seems like a relatively simple fix, should the consumers demand it. Two wheels somewhere at the CG could be enough since it's only 144Kg. You could then move it around sort of like a wheelbarrow. The option to just fly it to a parking space is always there too. It's VTOL, after all.

I think vehicles like this would benefit from the use of a bank of redundant micro generators as main power with batteries as backup. This push to use pure battery power because fossil fuels "are bad" is hindering this innovative niche of aircraft. The distance you can fly the blackfly is not impressive. Generators could push this over the 300 mile range which is practical for transportation. Hybrid automobiles were the first electric vehicles to be widely accepted. I think this would also work in the aircraft industry. Any thoughts?
@Captain7484
@Captain7484 2 года назад
The domino effect is at play here as adding fuel and excessive generators will increase A/C weight. Which will in turn increase the measure of thrust needed for VTOL operations; meaning the equipment configuration will be subject to change. All of this means that the A/C will be heavier, require a pilot's license to operate, and have an increased per unit cost (putting it out of the range of the general public). I have to imagine the solution to all of this is to find away to incorporate electric generators (solar or wind) to generate energy during cruise. This will increase the unit price but the improved model can be sold as a luxury model.

Their website (www.opener.aero) and youtube channel (ru-vid.comvideos) have a selection of videos, some of which show level cruise flight. This one (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UIbw3YueCjA.html&ab_channel=Opener) is a 360 degree video which shows an entire 4+ min flight from takeoff to landing from the cockpit perspective. You can pan the camera during the flight by clicking and dragging the video, or you can watch with a VR headset and look around. Regarding cruise flight stability/comfort, keep in mind that this is an autonomous flight flying a specific flight path and the control system has to counteract the wind to keep it on that path. A human controlled flight would be smoother.

This: 40km range (24 miles) Other cheaper ultralight vehicles: 290 miles. This: actual range is about 12 miles, because you need to make it back. You better give yourself a buffer though because battery performance is effected by many factors, so actual max range is optimistically 10 miles. Other cheaper ultralight vehicles: actual range effectively unlimited because you can land every couple hundred miles and refuel. People do it. This: described by company promo materials. Other cheaper ultralights: described by real world usage over decades. This: not actually the cost of an SUV, because you’ll have to pay for company mandated training in a monopoly market with zero competition. Other cheaper ultralights: you should probably get some training, but you’re not forced to, and you can choose your trainer within a competitive market. The competitive market actually makes it so that many sellers offer free ‘optional’ training with purchases of ultralights. This: empty promises for years and years. More mature, tried and tested, and less expensive ultralight technologies: You can buy a complete tandem paramotor trike setup for under 20k. This: vtol, but absurdly impractical. Other ultralights: vtol options have been around for over 25 years, but they are absurdly impractical. This: obligatory geo-fencing travel nanny big brother style, your stuff isn’t really your stuff and ultimately we control it tech-dystopia technology. Other cheaper ultralights: fly where you want when you want and face the consequences yourself because you are capable of being responsible for your own actions. This: backwards innovation that offers less for more and is powered by pure hype and will fail because it depends upon buyers being ignorant and cutting without even looking at the options out there. Other cheaper ultralight aircraft: absolutely awesome, inexpensive, and getting better and better year after year. I don’t know, but it sure seems like the people behind this company built a light vehicle that could fly and were blown away because they were simply ignorant about all the other light vehicles that fly that had existed for decades prior. Granted, ultralight vehicles remain somewhat uncommon, so it’s not surprising they didn’t know much about them. On the other hand, of your going to invest time and money in developing a product, you ought to do your research and find out what is already available. It’s not surprising that lots of average people are impressed with this, and they can be forgiving for not doing a lot B of research on something they are not invested in. I think most will do their research before investing in the purchase of such a vehicle though, and that will utterly ruin this company. Look into paramotors and other commercially available ultralight aircraft.

i dont wanna take the freedom of anything, but yeah, This vehicle flying around is for 1000s of People on the Ground "a threat" . Even if it is probably not an actual threat , it is always on your mind when something is flying above you. That is the downside, also with its blades. It basically reminds me of a Helicopter. I heard, it might get liser, but again, sharp spinning Blades , noise hovering above you and "everyday life" dont go together very well i think. And that for the fun of 1 person 1000s people potentially deal with this . People complain about Plain Noise,... in a city this thing is stress, im convinced. Anyway, i dont want to take away freedom, but i dont think this is what people imagine. This is just a Helicopter that needs no license, cause its selfflying, but in its body, its a loud vehicle fying over our heads. Lets see how it actually feels, but we will probably think over the Laws for this thing.

@@AG-vc2ee @A G i think, psychological its different. A car 400 meters away from you, and your brain signals its no danger. This 400 meters from you, its unforseeable if it can hit you. Your brain always plays trough many scenarios. Thats probably why when your at a steep cliff you get rubberlegs. You also dont say, lets build a House directly at a steep cliff, so close as possible, even its irational to fall out window. So you build a house acording your feelings you get at a cliff. Until either or both better battery tech or better electric motors ( lighter , higher energy storage capabilities and lighter more efficient motors).... this tech is NOT viable. These vehicles operate for MINUTES.... on a single battery charge... NOT HOURS.... therefore as their “ endurance “ is low.... so too is the range.... ..not hundreds of miles... but rather “ TENS” of miles at best

Exactly! Get-you-nowhere novelty that plays in people not knowing much about ultralights, and this being easily impressed by “personal flight.” This thing has an optimistic 40km range (24 miles). Based on company promo material. Add a reasonable safety buffer, and it can go what? About 18 miles? If you want to have enough juice to make it back, then you can go maybe 9 miles? Landing and takeoff probably use much more juice too, so if you want to land at the destination and make it back, safely, then you go maybe 2 or 3 miles, if even. You can recharge at the destination? So basically you can only practically fly this between recharge stations, and they can’t be far apart. How long to recharge it? Zip lines are a more practical form of transportation. Meanwhile paramotors can go a couple hundred miles on a a tank, and intermittent refueling to extend that range is actually feasible. Not theoretically either. People do it. Today you can buy a complete tandem trike paramotor setup for under 2k. It is a more mature, well proven, and safer technology that is practical, affordable, and commercially available. Mandatory (company policy not law) training? How much for that? Are there independent trainers, or is it a monopoly training scheme without the benefit it competitive pricing. Geo-fencing? Wow! Travel nanny track your movements big brother bs. Cheaper ultralights go farther and let you go where you want when you want and face the consequences yourself because you are capable of being responsible for your own actions. Yeah I’m absolutely floored by how totally absurd this stuff is. There have been companies promising these absurd flying cars based on ridiculously impractical technology for the past 40 years at least, and nothing has come of any of them. Meanwhile people have actually been flying around in inexpensive unregulated ultralight vehicles based on practical technology, the whole time. I guess the difference is that the flying car vapor ware tend to imply parking in your driveway and flying to work. While that’s probably not going to become practical for a very long time, paramotors don’t actually need much space to get airborne, nor to land. The problem is the large paraglider element and all the paracord which all become tangled hazards taking off and landing in urban/suburban locales. I can see near future technological advances addressing those issues though with things like modern materials and nanotechnology.

No pilot license required, only 2 day training course? Major safety risk, you cant tell me any of these pilots are going to be competent. Also, what is the purpose of this thing exactly? some people argue the purpose is like a Taxi, Im no fan , cause its stressy for people below to have even one, two Taxis flying over the head. People talk about this thing in the city, haha. Its basically a Helicopter, probably a bit "liser" than a helicopter. Major difference is that its selfflying. But i think people have a bit too much imagination, cause its in its body: a helicopter. A helicopter flying over our heads. And that in the city? hundrets? hundrets of basically helicopters in a city, the Sound echoing around like pingpong, yeah, hahah
@erewrw1906
@erewrw1906 2 года назад
Ah, on the land.. Yeah on the land you desperatly need to have tonns of electro-charchers for flying cars. Im not shure if this will be very practical. So, i dont think , even with longerlife batteries, that is as usable as a normal Car. Only if many people use is, so you have chargers everywhere. Will many people use it? I think it hasnt any storage space really, . You cant invite a college at home, pick him up unless he has an own Car/vehicle. So, it has more limitations, and is less usable in the way , what people actually need. Yeah, its probably cool to fly, thats it, now i got it, thats the plus side. It may be a bit faster in the city or uneven Countrysites. But in the city, the noise would be unbarable. So we can forget that probably. so, those are my thoughts
