In this fly tying tutorial Curtis Fry demonstrates how to tie Davie McPhail's CDC Olive Quill Dun. This adult mayfly pattern is one of our favorite styles of dry flies. It has a large, high floating CDC wing. Which leaves the question; Is this the best style of wing for a dry fly? Let us know what you think in the comments!

If you don’t wrap the dubbing between the wings, but use it to prop up the rear section of the CDC, and then trim on an angle so the two sections of CDC appear as one, this is called a Smhaen Style wing developed by the same fellow who developed the bobbin and new dubbing twister with the same name. I incorporate the Smhaen wing into the majority of my dry flies. The one you tied appears to be a hybrid version of Smhaen’s.

I need to try the filling mill stripped quills, seem more durable than strung quills.

Although I love tying with saddle hackle, a man can survive just using CDC. It really is the magic feather.

Great fly! It looks like when you cut off the excess CDC, there would be stems poking out the back of the fly. How did you make the cut so they the rear facing material is tidy?

Wicked fly, when aligning the CDC do you face feathers together or away from each other. Thanks for the video!

Do you use thin dop resin to split the wing?

Why push the wing together with thread and dubbing and then split it again with resin? The final product looks great but I'm confused 🤔
