What is the best thing about Sweden? Meatballs? Wild elk? Beautiful people? Or is it 'Allemansrätten?'
Take a look at The Swenglish Adventure! / @malinandtom
Allemansrätten ('Freedom to Roam' in English) is the law which allows people in Sweden to walk, hike, camp, cycle, pick berries and mushrooms, and generally spend time ANYWHERE in nature. There are very few trespassing laws when it comes to open land, and this could be the very best thing about this country, in my opinion.
In this video, I discuss this law, and explain why I think it makes Sweden the way it is. And what better time to do it, than when we're heading down to Öland to do some off-grid camping by the beach!
My name's Tom, and I'm exploring the real Sweden. Sure, Stockholm's great, and Gothenburg is lovely, but I'm interested in exploring the things and places that made me fall in love with this country.

1. Campervans and vehicles in general is not a part of Allemansrätten. They go under Terrängkörningslagen = you are never allowed to drive in nature without permission from the goverment. If you own the land you can only drive when you work at your land. (this rule is missunderstood by many swedes and probably all german camperturists.) 2. there are no law about 24 hour camping. It says enstaka dygn (occasional days). The law is not 100% clear at this. But normaly you leave after 1-3 days to a new area. (this do only aply to tents not campervans.) 3. there are exception to allemansrätten, private gardens, Cultivated land, military areas and protected areas (beach protection areas, National parks etc.) are not a part of allemansrätten fully or att all. Allways check what applies to your area. 4. Hunting and fishing is excluded accept fishing around the cost and in some larger lakes. 5. You can pick berries, flowers and mushrooms above the ground. Mushrooms like truffle is under ground and belongs to the landowner. (flowers can be protected by law check before you pick) 6. you can pick branches on the ground but you cant cut down anything from a tree/bush etc. your allowed to pick fossiles on the beach if they are loose. But you can never pick some loose from the bedrock. 7. Remember that starting a fire is highly regulated in your local area. Do not start an fire before you know your allowed to do it and were your allowed to start the fire. take only pictures (and maybe berries and mushrooms) and only leave your footprints. This is only a few rules around Allemansrätten. Lots of turist thinks anything is free and allowed and that is not the case. I think you did a great first explanation of allemansrätten, it would be great if everyone was as understanding as you. Keep up the good work.

@@TominSweden Thank you. I tried, I hope my english was understandable. :D There are alot of exeptions to this. its kind of complicated. 1 exampel is snowmobiles are allowed to drive in nature when its snow on the ground. But only if you do not do any dmg to the crops or trees. etc. Not easy to understand as a swede and even harder as a tourist or immigrant.

Be Careful in nature when it’s hunting season as well. Even tho a hunter owns the land he or she hunts on he can never chase people of the hunting ground due to allemansrätten. But some times bad things have happened in the hunting season where berry pickers have been hit by a bullet. So please respect Each other out in the swedish woods.

That was good information, I'm Swedish but I did not know all that. But I'm only guilty to one thing on the list, I have picked truffle :-/
@revanpavift
@revanpavift 3 года назад
@@legan8140 that part of the law is also very unclear, if a campers presence is interfering with the hunt the landowner technically has the right to ask the campers to leave, altough i think this only apply to the bear and moose hunts.

As far as I remember being taught in kindergarden, the reason for the 24-hour rule is so that you don't put unnecessary strain on the land you stay on. If you move your campsite to an adjacent space, keeping the intent of the rule in mind and using common sense, you should be fine. It's not just the tent or the caravan that can make a mark if left for too long, just walking back and forth through the same 15x15 meter space for long enough will start to trample the land much like a walked path. Since Allemansrätten even applies to privately owned land, though not property like your backyard, you can imagine the landowner wouldn't be too happy about finding patches of destroyed undergrowth. So rule is grounded in the 'inte störa, inte förstöra' principle.
@TominSweden
@TominSweden 3 года назад
That actually makes perfect sense, I hadn’t thought of it in terms of physically damaging the land in ways like killing the grass.

This is the best part of our country in my opinion. I can camp almost anywhere, pick mushrooms and berries but i can't cut down standing trees, only those already fallen i can use (at least where i live). Fishing i think requires you to buy a fishing card in almost all of the lakes, that is to preserve the population of fish in the lake and not overfish. If you love camping and freedom, Sweden is amazing.

Yeah, it´s drilled into us as children, a lot of us go to "Mulle" school when we´re about 5. Your parent pack a backpack with fruit, sandwiches and some hot chocolate in a thermos, and you go out in a group in in the forests and learn about nature, wildlife, the trees and such things. It has been going on since 1957, which mean that most people under the age of 70 has done this (and those who are older, were out in nature with their parents picking berries and muchrooms a lot anyway, so they also learnt this). I think that they in the 1957 perhaps felt that people were getting urbanized and feared that the new kids would lose this connection with nature, and started these things to prevent that. Almost every kindergarten (I haven´t heard of any that doesn´t) spend a lot of time outdoors, going on hikes in the forests. There are also some that specializes in this. "All man´s right." With rights also comes responsibility. Somebody leaving trash in the nature is really dispised by Swedes. It´s like...going home to someones grandma and throw garbage in her garden, it´s just unthinkable for most. You don´t do that, you always pick of everything, and leave the place like you found it. Even if we take it for granted, it´s something that we´re really proud of. It defines us in a way. Thanks for this video!

That’s what I love about the Swedish system! It’s taught from such a young age, that it’s just natural to Swedes. We don’t have much like that in the UK, so I think it’s really interesting to learn about here.

Good explanation of allemansrätten. But campervans and cars doesn't apply under allemansrätten. Or the freedom to roam as it's called in English. Sadly a lot of tourist think its a free for all when they come to Sweden. Allemansrätten isn't just a right. There's a lot of rules of what you're not allowed to do. Example you not allowed to harm living trees. And dead fallen trees are food for insects and not firewood. Dead branches you can make fire with.

REG. Nature in Sweden compared to UK. We have approx. 315000 sqkm of forest in Sweden. The total area of UK is 243000 sqkm. So our forest can cover UK and a bit more. Swedish forest can cover England 2,5 times. And we are fewer people here than what lives in London. Only 3% of sweden is land that has been built on. so yes, loads of nature in Sweden :)
@TominSweden

That’s crazy! I knew there was a lot of forest, but seeing it written down like that makes it feel even more massive.
@RobertClaeson

Not quite right. There's 10.45 million people in Sweden as of the most recent count. There's about 9.54 million people in London. So not more, but not far off either.
